I don't go places twice on vacation, but after having a less than ideal experience at a nearby competitor, I decided to come back for the drinks and the Grouper sandwich! Courtney was my waitress, and even when slammed, she never forgot me. She was professional and did an outstanding job both times I ate with her. As for the food, it was the best I had in Clearwater. I prefer Diner and Dive local eats compared to overpriced and pretentious restaurants. I had the seafood platter and the Grouper sandwich, and both were outstanding and grilled to perfection. I enjoyed my seafood scallops and grouper with green beans on the platter, but I LOVED my sandwich and fries! This was also my FIRST stop on the Cocktail Challenge (four stops for four signature drinks at four locations), and I enjoyed my drink on a humid day and, if I'm being honest, loved my Dockside Lemonade the best of all the drinks on the challenge. I had the Banana Hammock and, of course, the Rum Runner, which was outstanding, but this Dockside Lemonade was cool and refreshing and welcomed. Little sweet as a heads up, but really a nice summer drink! At the end of the day, this was a great way to start my challenge and Clearwater vacation. Great prices and solid food. I recently read a book about how most grouper isn't actually grouper. The book called out that Frenchy's grouper is the real deal because they fish for it themselves. That was enough to make me want to try this restaurant. I'm glad they have this location, because it was two minutes from Opal sol where we were staying. We were here at about 1130 on a Saturday and there was tons of seats available. It doesn't seem that big, but being that it's pretty far south from a lot of other places I think the size fits the demand. You can sit outside on the first floor or upstairs. Upstairs, there were only about eight tables, but it was air-conditioned and we had a nice view of the beach. All the drinks are so inexpensive. We are talking less than $10 each. I got a butter, pecan old-fashioned and my husband got a margarita and we both enjoyed our drinks. For our entrées, I got a super grouper grilled sandwich with coleslaw, my younger son got a pretzel that was in the shape of Fish, my older son got a chicken tender basket, and the two of them shared, and my husband got a peel and eat shrimp. This was the perfect amount of food for all of us, we ate it all. The pretzel was a huge hit, it comes with queso, and the kids demolished it. The grouper sandwich tasted a little dry, but again I love the fact that it is real grouper so I would definitely try again. Service was pretty quick and music was old school (think Price). We stopped in to Frenchys South Beach Cafe for a quick lunch. Don't be confused by the ramp next to the hotel ... the host stand is actually in the parking lot. There is plenty of shade covering at this restaurant, which I can appreciate. My husband and I decided to order a bunch of appetizers to split. We went with a chicken quesadilla, mozzarella sticks & grouper nuggets. Everything arrived hot fresh from the kitchen. The mozzarella sticks were actually nugget size but still good. We enjoyed the tartar sauce that came with the grouper nuggets. It was the perfect amount of food for us to split. My husband is a sucker for a souvenir cup... so he ordered the Classic Rita to get a color changing cup. Stacey was our server. Honestly we always love coming to Frenchys when we are in Clearwater however I would say this year just wasn't the best experience. We sat outside and it was rather hot as well as the prices were more pricey than other restaurants nearby. Menu has a lot of options just felt as if there could've been better prices and everything is an upcharge. I had my service animal and was questioned before walking in which is completely fine and appropriate however just felt a little uncomfortable as we were sitting outside and everyone was staring at us after that initial conversation. We got recommended this by the folks at Sea Screamer and they were not wrong. We arrived and were seated outside in a covered area with a nice breeze. The waiter was very enthusiastic and knowledgeable. He went over the menu and got us our drinks and the our order and son we had our food. And everything was incredible. The French fries are great something that a restaurant can many times not pay attention to but there were crispy and flavorful. Was a bit disappointed with my visit. This was a surprise based on other reviews. Generally the food was good, but not very good or great by any means. The visit was also dampened by the existence of small flies everywhere. I'm assuming this is a rare occurrence and we were just unlucky that day. Now the detailed review: This Frenchy's location is small with primarily outdoor seating. We liked the outdoor seating (if not for the flies and some seagulls attacking other patrons). The server was considerate and friendly. The drinks were very good and hit the spot. We ordered the Famous Grouper Sandwich and a Lobster Roll. The Grouper was ok with good flavor but soft and a bit mushy. The cheese and roll it was served on was good though. Kettle chips were also very good. The Lobster Roll was much better. Tender and flavorful lobster with seasoning that was not overpowering. Served on Texas toast. Wasn't a big fan of the coleslaw either which was a bit bland and watery. First, I have to give a big shoutout to our waiter, Ryan! He was friendly, funny, and super attentive. Even though we came in close to closing time, he made us feel completely welcome--no rush at all. He was also great about splitting our check and making sure our meals came out quickly. The buffalo mac and cheese was a delicious surprise--packed with flavor and way more filling than it looked! I even ended up taking some back to the hotel. My son loved his half-peeled shrimp and Shirley Temple, and I have to say, the piña colada with Fruit Loops was such a fun and tasty twist. First time here. As locals we usually go to Saltwater's, but we were staying a few nights only a small walk away. Sat outside. Our server was fantastic. We had questions that he answered without hesitation. His recommendations were the bomb! Cocktails didn't have much alcohol but the price was decent for what we got. Highly recommend the grilled grouper platter, black beans and rice, and garlic green beans. That meal was so good, I returned and had it again the next night. Wish I had returned our third night instead of going next door where our experience was the total opposite. Frenchy's is a local highlight in Clearwater Beach, and all locations offer different items among the favorites. You'll never go wrong, and if you happen to have an issue, they will make it right. Plenty of umbrellas for shade. When I think of Frenchys this is the one I think of. With multiple levels each one provides a different vibe. The wrap around bar on the main level is perfect for finding a drink and maybe a quick bite. Of course you can get any of their drinks but the frozen house drink is sooo yummy. I highly recommend. The location can't be beat, except for the lack of parking. The service was prompt and friendly. The food was amazing with the exception of the Key Lime pie which was frozen (I mean it came to the table hard as a rock) and didn't have that "pucker" factor that key lime should have.
