Usually sit at the bar and Sharon is an excellent bartender, but all the staff here is very good. The hostess on Sunday is very unfriendly and makes you feel unwanted. We arrived early on one occasion and one of the servers did not let us forget how much we inconvenienced her. Our servers have been great. The food was sub par the last visit. Bacon was just short of being burnt. The waffles were way too sweet and the fries were overcooked. My parents like this place and it was close my wife and figured.. why not, give it chance on our anniversary. It was ok. Not great, not bad, just ok. Just think applebee's combined with an old italian lounge and you have poppies. This place is rather worn and tired and has that old lounge vibe. The staff was pretty friendly and stayed on top of things. Food was somewhat bland but not bad...just very forgettable. Pricing seemed a little high for the average quality, but at least portions were large. We had chicken parm, a bacon burger, and carrot cake. I stopped into another business in the strip mall and couldn't figure out why no parking spots. Then I saw the steady stream of people entering under the red awning. Made a mental note to try it soon. Well tonight was the night! My family didn't want to go out so I chose Poppies for take out! I picked our meals up we didn't use GH. When I entered my eyes had to adjust to a darker interior and the place was buzzing on a Friday night at 5:30pm. My order was ready and waiting on the bar! We ordered the 14oz Prime Rib med rare, the German Schnitzel, coconut ship dinner with rice pilaf and a half rack of ribs. The prime rib was fantastic. Easy to cut tender cooked to perfection. There was mashed potatoes with green beans and au jus. Only missing was a horseradish sauce. We'd definitely order it again. The Schnitzel was super yummy. Tender pork cutlet with mashed potatoes and red cabbage. The mushroom sauce was really good. I'd get more next I order. Great flavors. Coconut Shrimp was really good! Big size shrimps with broccoli and rice pilaf. We'd order it again. Finally the ribs were fall off the bone tender with fries and cole slaw. I'm more a skinny fry person but the ribs were also Good enough to order again. For take out, it was packed well and nicely warm to immediately plate and serve! I came in for a Saturday lunch. I orderd the chicken picatta. It was supurb. The wine sauce had the perfect amount of capers to add that touch of saltiness. The fresh vegetables that came with it were cooked and seasoned perfectly. Even the garlic toast was excellent with the right amount of crispyiness. Since the main meal was so good, I stayed to try dessert. I ordered the server recommended bread pudding. It came with a salty caramel glaze and a scoop of vanilla ice cream. It did not disappoint. I made reservations for Christmas Eve. We showed up early for our reservation and were told we had to wait to be seated. Our reservation was for 6:00 p.m.. We were finally seated at 6:20 pm. The wait staff did not come to our table until about 6:45 to get our drink order. She did not come back for our dinner order for another 15 minutes. It is now 7:00 pm. We received our meal. We were asked at 7:30 to please leave the restaurant as there were people waiting to be seated!!!!!This is unacceptable! We were not even done have our drinks or finishing our meal. Its menu is filled with a wide variety of delicious and generously sized appetizers, salads, main dishes, and drinks. I'd call it "eclectic American." Service is excellent -- fast and friendly. Our wait staff was, Laura, such an incredible individual with a big heart. She is perfect with checking back and fantastic service. Sopped in today for lunch. First time. Just happed to be driving by. From the front I didn't know this would be so large inside and such a great place. Super fast service affordable prices. I had the soup and sandwich combo. Salmon cake slider and cup of clam chowder. Both delicious. The chowder was exceptional. Was in there for dinner tonight and had a reservation we sat down 15 minutes later we were asked what we would like to drink put in drink order waited another 10 minutes for our drinks then she finally asked what we would like to eat took our order food was out in 5 minutes which was great some guy brought our food did not see our server for the rest of our dinner we had to ask another guy there to bring ketchup received no refills. I love the nostalgic ambience. I've had great meals here. I think it depends on which chef is in the kitchen the night you go. I have been less impressed on other nights. The chicken wings are amazing, very consistent and delicious. I order them without the sauce, with ranch on the side. Took my friend here for her birthday, mentioned to the waitress that it was her birthday, we ordered dessert and was charged for it. She never offered any complimentary birthday dessert. Imagine my surprise when I called later to verify their policy..... free ice cream sundae for birthdays, which she never told us about. Waitress wasn't attentive, never even refilled our waters. Seems poppies survives in spite of being a mediocre re restaurant. I do not understand how anyone would rate them 5 stars. and one has to wonder about a restaurant that has as many one and two stars as five stars. Yesterday three of us were looking for a place to eat outside, heated. one person was there recently and said the patio was heated and very comfortable, although service was not very good (a common thread with poorer reviews.) We called to see if we needed reservations and asked if the patio was open and heated. Well, the airhead that answered the phone, as she was an airhead, said they do not turn on the heaters during the day. We even asked if they could turn on one of the heaters for us. She said no. She simply restated they do not turn them on during the day. I guess it is ok to freeze in the day trying to eat but not at nite. Needless to say, we did not eat there. I just do not understand, when restaurants are being killed by the pandemic, why someone would simply refuse to even attempt to accommodate customer. As one previous reviewer wrote, "service is so rude and atrocious that you simply can't enjoy a meal there." That has been my experience in the past and why I no longer go there (but we have few choices for the time being). Instead we ended up at Jimmy's Jersey Street Café, on 9th and Jersey. They have an outside seating area surrounded by sheeting. We were greeted by a friendly, smiling hostess who also was out server. She welcomed us in and said we could sit wherever we wanted. We said we wanted to be warm as possible, so she said not to worry and once we were seated, she moved some of the portable propane heaters and focused them on us. Needless to say we were warm and toasty and it was a thoroughly enjoyable experience. When you walk into this place you'll be surprised - it's really big inside. As many have stated the decor is a bit dated, but that's kind of it's charm. We were promptly greeted and seated with a pleasant hostess. All of the help for the most part are adults. Our server seemed a little off. Part pushy, part annoyed, and maybe just tired after what appeared to be a busy Sunday brunch. Our server suggested they were known for their ribs. I got a 1/2 rack and it seemed a little small. She said they first boil them in beer and then cook them. I didn't taste the beer, but could tell it was boiled. The meat was rather tasteless. The sauce was sweet and uncomplicated. The coleslaw was pretty good. The baked beans weren't your typical beans from a can. I'm undecided whether I liked them or not. My wife got an omelet and she liked it pretty well. Her Bloody Mary wasn't very good. It may have been an off day. You may love the food. I thought it was okay. I give it a three star review because nothing was terrible, but nothing was remarkable. Staff was friendly and prompt with my takeout order. I got the Mediterranean pasta salad with shrimp as an add on and it was good for the price. There was a lot of food as well for the cost. The atmosphere was super busy but that's because it's in a popular area and was also on a holiday weekend so I will have to check back at a later date to give a true feel.
