When him and his assistant first walked in, Daisy growled a little, unsure of what was happening. But within minutes, she completely relaxed around him and wanted all of his attention. My nervous system picked up on it immediately, and clearly Daisy's did too. He showed up with humanity, presence, with the quiet Veteran-to-Veteran understanding that doesn't need to be spoken. This told us everything we needed to know about the kind of person he is. Dr. John explained every detail of the process with clarity and patience. He told us what to expect, answered every question, and made sure we felt supported through every step. His presence reminded me so much of my brother -- the way he knew exactly when to be serious and when to bring a little light into the room. That familiar warmth meant more than I can put into words. When Daisy took her last breath at 9:28pm, he honored us by giving us private time with her. They both stepped outside into the freezing cold -- during a polar vortex with sub‑zero wind chills -- just so we could have those sacred final moments in peace. That level of respect and empathy is something I will never forget. What touched us even more was his integrity. He knew we had already spent nearly $3,000 on emergency vet visits earlier in the month and still came without expecting ANYTHING in return. We were only able to borrow $250 last minute for her cremation, and even then he tried to refuse it because he knew we were struggling. His compassion was genuine, not transactional. I had been syringe‑feeding and hydrating Daisy since December 30th, monitoring every breath, every symptom, to keep her comfortable and strong, never thinking such an experience would be necessary. I was living to keep her alive so trying to rewire my system to get back to reality has been ugly and incredibly painful. However, I am deeply grateful that her final moments were filled with love, dignity, and the gentle care of someone who truly understands the weight of saying goodbye. Dr. John gave us -- and Daisy Mae -- a gift we will carry for the rest of our lives.

The receptionist refused to ask the veterinarian for me. In fact, in response to me asking her if she could just ask him, she laughed sarcastically and said "what, do you not believe me?". I understand that this practice does not cater to aquatic animals but the absolute disdain and callousness of the receptionist in the face of my grief and desperation was heart breaking. Do not take your loved ones here if you expect an empathetic welcome from the suppor staff. You'll be laughed at, belittled, and disregarded. The ER vet…read morediagnosed our cat with intermediate cell lymphoma, administered chemo and told us that additional testing was not needed. Dr. Carter got the test results and was not convinced it was lymphoma. She had us get different meds and order more testing. Within 48 hours of taking the non-lymphoma meds our cat was acting livelier than she had in months. Additional testing is still not 100% conclusive that we're out of the woods yet, but it is much more likely that our cat DOES NOT have cancer. Our family cannot thank Dr. Carter enough for her care and attention devoted to our lil' baby. We cannot imagine the route we would have taken had Dr. Carter not went the extra mile and treated our cat as if it was her own. We will be Dr. Carter patients for life!

We have found her and her staff to be extremely caring at all times. They treat their animal patients as if they were family. They took care of my old man in the best way they could and even showed me the costs upfront and were not afraid to suggest that if I needed to go elsewhere for price concerns, that they understood. My reason for a 4 star is simply that they're not labeled as an Urgent Care, nor was that said to me when they were recommended via another popular vets office in Ferndale...and its also just not in plain sight. Still, Dominque as well as the rest of the staff we encountered, were the kindest, most gentle people to talk to throughout an anxious ordeal for a furry-loved one. Again, well worth the wait. They are accommodating, fair, and compassionate. I love the parking lot which is rare in Birmingham. The walk to the door is a few feet from your car. It's quiet inside (unless there is another verbal kitty patient). The techs and doctor sit on the cat's level (the floor). They really make them feel comfortable. More than one pet parent can be in the room which is important to us. You can even hold your kitty and take them back to get blood drawn or nails clipped. We never feel rushed or like a number here.
