I've always been more of a fan of the other local bbq joints, but I agreed to go here because that's where everyone else wanted to go. When visiting home: I love this place. My elderly parents and I love the whole catfish. Now the whole catfish you can't order by phone. You have to go there to get it freshly cooked. Drove from Longview to get lunch here. Ordered two corn dogs, fried okra, 3 piece fish plate with double fries instead of Coleslaw and meat pies. Once home I looked through my bag and there was no okra or double fries but I had coleslaw that wasn't wanted....even though I PAID for it. I called Porkys back and a young guy answered the phone once I started telling him what I wanted..in the middle of my sentence he switched me to someone else. Once I realized I was switched to someone else I stated that that was rude and the lady couldn't care less. I told her why I was calling regarding my order. She told me that I could come back on Saturday or today to get my order replaced. I told her that I was not from Marshall and would not be able to come back today or Saturday due to the holidays and I was met with "Well...the OWNER Will Not allow us to give you a replacement order if it's not in the same week". So therefore if I cannot come back in the same week of thanksgiving I lose my money and I do not get a replacement order. No consideration for out of towners. The catfish at Porky's is the only kind worth driving over for in the Marshall area. The staff is friendly, and the decor is country rustic, but don't expect a quick meal. Well folks here it goes. After anticipating the meal all day, it was a bit of a disappointment! My wife ordered the one sandwich that they claim to be the home of .... the Porky Pig... which is a pulled pork sandwich, she said it was " alright".... she had a side of potato salad, that was spicy?!?! What?!?! I ordered the two meat plate with chopped beef and sausage, the sausage was excellent, the chopped beef... not so much, all I could taste or feel rather was gristle. The beans well can you say canned???? The potato salad again....spicy!!! The Cole slaw was good after you put some pepper in it. They have two options for barbecue sauce one which I think they have 75% sugar in, and the other which tasted like a cayenne pepper soaked in vinegar. Not very tasty ..... either one of them. We were with my wife's family for her grand-mothers mothers day meal. Everyone that got fish said it was excellent. They even have what they call a fish biscuit...weird...but they said it was very tasty. I give them three stars for the simple fact that the family loved the fish. Day 2 of BBQ challenge. So I saw smokehouse and decided to go here for some brisket and read the the sausage was good. However, I ordered the 2 meat combo and got the chopped brisket and sausage: brisket came out room temperature to cold (which doesn't say much for Texas brisket) and sausage was definitely store bought. Beans were mediocre at best and their sauce shouldn't be mentioned since there wasn't much to it besides a simple basic mixture. I was just very upset about how the brisket came out. I mean, did any one not care to just if the food was warm. That's crazy. Won't be returning. Was pretty much disappointed especially after smelling the smoker when we park the car. The wife and I were on our way back from Caddo lake and stopped here for lunch. She got fried catfish and she liked it a lot. Very crisp, fresh, and not greasy. The sides were good too. I got a dinner plate (2 meats with 2 sides) for $7.25. The sliced brisket was disgraceful. It was cold, hard, and dry. They should be ashamed to serve such subpar food. Coming through Marshall, TX on a Saturday night was a bit of a letdown. All of the local places downtown had closed. The wife and I were on our road trip across the South, after meeting up with our son walking across America. We met him in Sweetwater, TX, spent some time seeing the sites in the Lone Star State, and were planning to retrace his walk on US 80 back to Tybee Island, where he began (thebaumer.com). We checked in at The La Quinta on US 59. The staff person at the desk recommended Porky's when we asked about barbecue. Being from the Northeast, you just can't pass up a chance for good Texas barbecue when you have the opportunity, because the stuff up in Maine is quite pathetic and basically not the real deal. We learned quickly that Porky's wasn't, either. My pulled pork (a barbecue fave of mine) was disappointing. Not very tender, lacking in flavor and the choices of sauces (from vinegar-based to hot) did little to bring the meat up to an acceptable taste level. My wife's fried catfish was also a downer. Greasy, and not much for taste. Not sure if the owners were religious types, but no alcohol was served, which was a disappointment given our 300 mile drive from Austin, and being a Saturday night. Plus, a Lone Star just might have taken off some of the edge on our dining disappointment. read more

I was told the catfish was good but after eating my whole chicken I was pretty full. I've not had anything yet that I didn't like. My favorite is the chef salad add smoked chicken. Their house ranch is to die for. Word of caution: the baked potatoes sell out early. As with any small, local establishment, they prep this stuff at the beginning of the day so when it's gone, it's gone. Now I know considering the Texas heat, food, and door open in closed I know gnats are bound to happen! So I called two days later since they were closed and being very understanding I explained my issue to lady who answered.
