After 12 hours on the road trip back home finding BBQ express was the best choice for dinner! we needed a quick stop before making it home, saw the reviews and said, lets get some BBQ. The owners were so inviting and sweet before we even walked in, haha. Driving through Marshall, needed a quick bite. Saw the reviews and set this place as our destination. As soon as we pulled up we knew we chose well. I had the chopped beef sandwich, hubs had two meat (boudin and rib). Those ribs tho.... Literally the best rib I've ever had. Fall off the bone tender. Rich smoky flavor. Mmm. Locals there were all raving about the special of the day which was a porkchop. I wish we lived closer so we could try more. This was a quaint little restaurant that when you walked in, you could smell the barbecue. They do have tables in there if you like to dine in.I was greeted by a find gentleman that owned the restaurant. I wanted to try the three meat selection. I got the brisket, the ribs, and the sausage. The brisket had just the right amount of fat on it to make it taste so good. The ribs have plenty of meat on them and were just as tender. Good stuff! Had the chopped beef sandwich with mild bbq sauce and a side of greens. Prob the best greens I've ever had. The sandwich was a good size, plenty of meat, sauce, and soft bun. The mild bbq sauce was sweet and peppery. I didn't catch their names but the two guys working there were very nice. My husband, the native Texan, says Marshall, Tx is known for its bbq. East Texas bbq is usually hickory smoked and west Texas is mesquite smoked. I can't verify all that but I can tell you this hidden gem was worth going off our road trip route for lunch. read more

It's off the beaten path and when we pulled up the smoke was going hard- it smelled great! The staff was very friendly and the servings were huge! We tried the brisket, ribs and sausage - it was all fabulous. The brisket was extra fatty and super tender, which is amazing, but in big doses can be heavy. Maybe I'm hard to please because I'm a foodie and travel a bit. Really nice owner but the food was a miss for me. We got here right as it opened so you think it would just be getting off the pit. But actually the food was borderline cold! Brisket sliced was tough and should never be tough but smoke flavor was decent. The ribs were slightly tender but also cold and seemed like the old reheated ribs you do later on. Really disappointed definitely not Texas bbq I was expecting. The sauce I think was the right amount at least. Turnip greens was ok not very flavorful to me. Guess we are not far enough in Texas yet. If this is the best in town I'm sorry for the locals. I was on a road trip and happened to find this place on Yelp. I never would have found it otherwise as it is about a half mile off of the main road. I am so glad I did! The gentleman working there took his time and explained all the food they had. There was a lot to choose from, and I settled on a brisket and sausage plate. I was told the sausage was fresh that morning and it was juicy and very tasty. The brisket was some of the best I have ever had. Herb's skills with hickory smoking put him up there with the best of Texas' current pitmasters. I'm talking Lockhart Smokehouse, Pecan Lodge, Kreuze's Market, Salt Lick. I walked in at 11 on a Saturday morning and was treated to a sample of a smoked chopped pork patty he'd just pulled off the smoker. It was outstanding. Came back at 1230 for brisket & ribs. Brisket was fantastic. Not dry or flaky. I got a nice fatty piece with some burnt ends. Pork ribs were also excellent. Deep, solid hickory flavor. I've said in the past that bad sides can ruin a good meat experience, but there was no danger of that here...I ordered beans & greens and there was a little spark of the divine in both. If you're passing through Marshall on a day that Herb has awoken at 2am to take his briskets out of the smoker, you need to get here. Arrive at about 1145 to noon. This is a great hidden gem in the city of Marshall since it's not on the main roads. It's definitely a hole-in-the-wall type of place. I ordered a beef brisket sandwich. Honestly, I wasn't really expecting much since I'm used to eating great BBQ from Franklin's, Killen's, Black's, etc. To my surprise, their brisket sandwich went way over my expectations. There were 4 tender, moist, and friendly-sized briskets, drizzled with just enough of their tasty, sweet BBQ sauce between 2 buns all for only ~$6. Talk about getting as good as a deal as you can get. The service was fast and smooth. As they were preparing my brisket sandwich, the owner gave me a hearty slice of juicy brisket just to give me a taste of what BBQ Express was all about. And right as I finished my last bite of the sample, my brisket sandwich was ready. We have been coming here since 3/2011. We have a review from the past on Zomato since we are relatively new to Yelp. The food here is standout. I will list from memory all we have had here and there. All the entrees are exceptional. The burger is our favorite in Marshall...better than a Bubba Burger and Jucy's and Porky's. Try this one. The catfish is also 2nd to none...better that Porky's. The breading is the key= exceptional. Our favorite along side Golden Chick catfish. The barbeque is good, the boudain is good and really all the entrees. You can't go wrong here. The sides whether it be fries to vegetables like the greens are all good too. Our take home lesson from this place though is the burger and the catfish! The atmosphere is neat as well. It is off the beaten path and you can smell it when you get out of your car= it would be hard to live around there. The inside is old fashioned and quaint. This is a nice hole in the wall. TV's are mounted in the rooms. We got to watch an episode of "the Bold and the Beautiful" and I think one of the blond guys on there is that punk kid from Karate Kid 3.....anyway, rough neighborhood but cool place. The price is right here for the food. The drinks are the only shortcoming here. They do have Diet Dr Pepper but only in those slim skinny plastic bottles that Dr Pepper still charges us the same price for but slides us less drink like Reese's and Hostess also try to pull off with their items.... We stopped here while passing through Marshall on our way back to Texas. The business is located a little of the beaten path so we where worried at first but we found it. My hubby ordered the rib sandwich and I had the rib plate with a side of beans and greens. The ribs tasted excellent however the sides where cold and lacked seasoning. Like others, my wife and I decided to try BBQ Express based on all the good Yelp reviews. We were visiting from out of town and had family in Marshall that recommended Bodacious, but we thought we'd try something different and boy were we glad we did. Herbert, the owner, seems to treat every person who walks in the door like they're not just his customer but his family. We were trying to make up our minds what to order when he just started bringing out samples to help us make up our minds. Several times he would stop, think for a second, and then say "Hold on, I've got something special I want you to try" and out would come a juicy piece of brisket or homemade sausage or whatever else he was working on. The man is proud of his BBQ (for good reason) and wants to share it with you. As for the food, we had brisket, ribs, and homemade sausage along with the usual sides. The sides were OK, and the sausage was pretty good, but the brisket and ribs were out of this world. To be fair, we did try Bodacious before we left town and their ribs and brisket were both quite good but, when you can have great food served by a man who loves his work and is proud to share it with you or you can have good food served by surly teenagers who just want to get done with their shift, it's an easy choice. It's a little off the beaten path, but you'll find it on Elysian Fields Road between Highway 59 and Garrett Street. He offers a daily lunch special for $5.99, which includes two sides and hot water cornbread (yum!). On "Soul Food Wednesdays," the daily special is, as you might guess, soul food like chicken fried steak, chicken spaghetti, and meat loaf. For those looking to have a lighter lunch, you can get a Linkster (a Pittsburgh Hot Link sandwich) or a Sloppy Joe (chopped meat in barbecue sauce) for under $2!
