Porras has been a go-to taco shop for my family for decades. There is something so nostalgic about this place, it brings back some really good memories of my childhood. Even when my family moved a to a different part of Houston, we still made the drive to Porras. My top two tacos are the Carne Guisada and the potato and egg. The carne Guisada has this rich gravy covering all the meat. It is so flavorful and honestly, the best Carne Guisada in Houston. The tortilla is homemade and super fresh. It is the perfect vessel for the carne Guisada, it doesn't fall apart at all, it is truly the best bite here at Porras. My second favorite, the potato and egg tacos are just a classic for me. Both the potatoes and the eggs are cooked so well. The salsa they provide for the tacos just ties everything together so wonderfully. Everyone is so friendly at Porras also, I'm glad to see this Houston staple is still in business. read more

It's hard to admit that something has been under your nose the whole time yet you were completely oblivious. Such is my story with Porras Prontito. Born and raise in the East side, working near the Loop and getting my haircut literally 1 mile down the street from here for over 7 years at least. Of course though, as soon as I posted a picture on social media of the sign, everyone and they mama started hitting me up stating how much they loved that place. Thanks for holding out on me, everyone. Lol Having lived in SA for a few years, I've become a big fan of carne guisada. Sure, it was a staple at Hispanic parties and events such as birthdays, weddings, etc but that's all it ever was to me: a quick, easy and cheap option when you've spent all your money on the other things for the event/party. But my mind was changed in SA and I realized it too late to enjoy it to the fullest in the Alamo city. Fast forward to a year after I moved back to Houston and I discovered this place (years after everyone else did, apparently). You couldn't make it up if you wanted to: a small, hole in the wall spot with a rich history, acclaimed by the community and without having to drive across town?! This place is great and a much needed option aside from the regular fast food in the area. The flour tortillas are big and flaky, the rice is full of flavor, the beans are nice and mushy and their guisada is tender and delicious. Add a few slices of veggies and the green fold of avocados just add a shiny bow to this plate. If you're a breakfast taco person, which we all are, then you NEED to try their Henry taco. Unless of course you don't like a runny egg in the middle of every other breakfast ingredient (bean, cheese, potato, etc)which in that case, grow up. read more

(Salvating) I was in town in December and you know I stopped in at Porras... twice hehe. I ate there and I also ordered like 6 burritos to bring back to Fort Worth for myself and my brother. Can I just say that they are still as good as they were when I was growing up. The freshly made tortillas, the mexican music playing in the background. Bliss. Along with my usual bacon, egg, potato, and cheese I had fajita and mayo. Can I just say, dayuuuum. How had I not had this before? I was so glad to have taken my brothers advise. With that being said I also got to taste the barbacoa and yaaaas, it was SO GOOD, and the tamales? Yummm, I got a dozen of those togo also! So even with the 5 hour drive back to Fort Worth the food was still delicious, with the help of the microwave of course. The best breakfast burritos in the entire world in my humble opinion. Everyone was so friendly and the food came out very quickly. They have a homemade salsa that is tangy and kicks those burritos up to maximum flavor. Every time I am in town, I have to hit this place up. 5th Ward has a lot of great Mexican food dives. Burritos here are on the smaller side, but fairly priced at around only $3 each on average. There are a few photos on Yelp that say they're photos of tacos but they look exactly like each of the half-dozen burritos I ordered. The carne guisada is tasty like others have mentioned. Chicharron con chile was good too and not at all tough like others have experienced. But I liked the Barbacoa more. Burritos don't come with beans or rice, which exactly how I like it. They'll each come with a small container of green hot sauce. If you buy anything from the store side just check the expiration date (milk on all but two bottles was 2 days expired). Plenty of parking across the street and a 15 min parking space right next to the store if you're in and out. Very friendly staff. Lots of pastries which I didn't try yet. Toilets are not in the main dining area. read more

This place IS open for business despite what it looks like on the outside. All you have to do is peak in to verify that... People are packed in waiting to get their breakfast fix. And I am glad I was one of them despite how out of place my rodeo boot wearin self looked! The tortillas are definitely in house and not that thick bfast crap the other places rely on to keep the goods from falling out. Chorizo egg and cheese - out of this world. Did not need salsa. Potato egg and cheese eaten later cold because the size of these things are ridic, still amazing but amazing with salsa which only enhanced the taste - not covered up the original flavor. I teach in the area and I've been coming for their breakfast tacos for years. They are huge in my opinion. I have never tried any other dish on their menu but the breakfast tacos. They are always a hit with me. I typically call my order in right as I'm passing the George R Brown. I like to get in and get out. I always grab a small apple juice to enjoy with my taco. If you're local or you grew up near the area you probably get this place. I can't stress that enough. There's a plethora of taco ridden restaurants & trucks on the east side. Many are good. I try them all. I work pretty close and tried it a few years ago and like many places they usually have a go to item. This instance is their carne guisada burritos. Can't go wrong with those. Don't be turned off by the decor, just try the damn place. If you know a little about the establishment and the owners you'll understand why. Pretty good tacos, we had potato and egg with bean burritos. The burritos are tacos. Good size for the price. With the few tacos we had we were content and not full. Obviously a hole in the wall- but worth the try. They will take cards with a $5 minimum, tables were available- don't judge a book buy its cover-you are there for the food not the look of the place. read more
