I'd consider this one of the best spots in the city for tamales. In my opinion, they serve some of the best tamales around. I've tried the chicken, spinach & cheese, and jalapeño & cheese tamales, and the flavor and quality have been consistently excellent every time. Each tamale is well-seasoned, full of flavor, and perfectly cooked. It's one of those places I find myself coming back to regularly whenever I'm craving tamales. I went again on Sunday Aug 2 2026,thought I would give them a second chance, never again,they were horrible! Dry,and no flavor. I was so damn mad. 15.00 for crap.you have been warned. I'm visiting family in Houston for the holidays and family decided to get tamales for Christmas. Sister in law said this is the best tamales around. We got there at 8am and the line wasn't too long. We heard normally the line is out the door. The restaurant has vibrant decor. Everything is made fresh including their tortillas. We got 2'dozens each of the beef and chicken tamales, some pastries, and 2 bean burritos which technically it's a chimichanga here. I was expecting bean, cheese wrapped in flour tortilla. Not fried. It was decent, although the size is small. The tamales were decent as well. They weren't the best I've had, could use some more seasoning. The sauces were bland I'm afraid. We have been getting tamales from Alamo for years but this year was a HUGE disappointment. We bought 12 dz but I took back 7 dozens of Regular Spicy Pork because they were so dry. They happily gave me freshly made ones the next morning but Guess What... they were dry too.. not as bad as first ones but not good. The masa is just dry!! I can't believe I waited this long to post a review for Alamo! We used to live around the corner from here, and then we moved out of state and I totally forgot to post a review. In a nutshell, this is your place for excellent quality (and very affordable) tamales north of the 610 in Houston. Yes, everything here is clean and good, but I really only come for the spicy pork and the cheese and jalapeño tamales. Whenever I come back in town I pick up a couple dozen. The first dozen I eat fresh, then rest get frozen and I bring them home to share with family and friends. It's a great value. 5 dozen will run you about $80. They throw in lots of their homemade salsas (green and red) with each dozen. One "complaint" that I've heard from lots of people is that the tamales are small. My response is "well yeah...but the flavor is on point and for the price...you can't beat it". Here's the dilemma...homemade tamales are about 1-2 times larger...but each one is made by hand. Here...you have your option of hand made and machine made. In a blind taste test, I wouldn't be able to tell them apart. Usually, when I see people selling los tamales de mi tía out of their house, yes they're larger but they usually charge $25/dozen...just over $2/ea (if you're lucky). Here, you're spending like $1.35/each...and you can honestly fill up on 5 tamales. That means a delicious lunch cost you only $9. Last thing...every employee I've ever interacted with was super nice...big smiles...and made me feel like my supporting the business was appreciated. It is self seating once you pay and this can be a bit tricky. Some people are saving tables while their family members are in line and this makes it a bit unfair. The food makes up for it all though! I was craving some tamales and I'd never been to Alamo Tamale & Taco, so I decided to give it a try and ended up meeting a friend there. I have heard a lot about this place, and truthfully the reviews were mixed. We ended up going close to closing time because I didn't know that they closed earlier than most restaurants. So, take note of that if you're planning on going. In my opinion, the tamales where very good. I ordered the cheese and jalapeno, the bean and the pork. I liked all of them but my favorite was the cheese and jalapeno, and I don't usually like cheesy things. But these had just the right amount of cheese and spice. I'd order them again for sure. The pork were also good, but I think on the next trip I'll try the beef tamales. The bean wasn't awful... it just wasn't my favorite. So, next trip, I'll most likely skip the bean all together. I am hoping to return soon because writing this review has made me crave some good tamales! read more

Alamo tamales use to make good quality tamales but sadly the masa has been substandard, doesn't have the same flavor and are smaller than the original homemade yeas ago. I've been a loyal customer of Alamo Tamales for over 20 years, back when it was just a small shack across the street. Unfortunately, not too far after the recent renovations, things have started to decline. When I visited this month (November 2024), I was shocked by the portion sizes--they were disappointingly small and downright ridiculous. I called to voice my concerns and was informed there's been a change in ownership. Alamo Tacos used to be *the* place for homemade tacos, loaded with generous fillings and wrapped in the softest tortillas. Sadly, that's no longer the case. I've been here in the past for tamales but never for lunch. Today was my first lunch trip. Line was not long at all. Ladies serving plates spoke both English and Spanish. They had a nice range of options from stuffed peppers, Enchiladas, tacos, mole and so much more. You enter and walk up like a Cafeteria line, grab a red tray to hold your stuff and just tell them what you want. Your asked if it's dine in or to go. Which means plate or box. The ladies working in the cafeteria area are so sweet and try so hard to get your order right despite the occasional language barrier.
