We stopped in here to grab some lunch on our way to Port Angeles. We got the "Pig and Pimento" (ham with pimento cheese-spicy!) and the "Horse and Cow" (pastrami, cheddar, horseradish dijonnaise). I went to the a very cool high school. They used to take us on extended field trips around the state. For the longest time, I had this store in my memory, yet couldn't recall where it was. I suspected it was here, and as soon as I walked in, I recognized the grand wooden staircase in the center. Nowadays, the store features high end specialized grocery items, clothing, and decorative kitchen decor. There is a free bathroom and a cafe in the back with a few tables for seating next to very sunny windows. The only reason I am not giving five stars is that the cafe staff was a bit brusque, no smiles, although they surely served us efficiently. read more

Very cute general store with lots to do. Tons of unique fun items you couldn't find anywhere else. Stuff like home decor, gifts, candy, clothing, novelty items, souvenirs, etc etc. Had an aesthetic theme throughout, great for taking pictures. The grand staircase is quite a view to first walk into. I didn't get a chance to visit the museum but the site is historical as well. The coffee shop around the back has delicious food with beautiful art on the walls to compliment your food. The seating area was a fairly romantic setting and the staff were always super friendly. I was quite disappointed in my experience, specifically in regard to customer service. I gather that Port Gamble General Store has been in operation for a while and was well regarded. It seems that something has changed and it is now relying on that reputation while doing nothing to uphold it. Unfortunately this happens to many businesses when management or ownership changes over time, In my opinion, this one is past its prime. Even the best reputation will tarnish without continued polishing. This place is amazing. I love the old time feel of the building. The selection was great - whoever the buyer is for their merchandise is experienced and it shows. Prices were on the high end so I didn't buy as much as I would have liked . The cafe in the back of the store was really great. We all loved our coffee, lunch, and dessert. So many tasty choices!! I wouldn't recommend a special trip to Port Gamble, but there are a few things to spend a few hours or half a day doing. Most of the shops are overpriced yawners, but the general store is very different. It has a cafe, coffee shop, and general shopping. Don't sleep on the second floor seashell museum. read more

Oh boy...this is a big one! When your small town shop is big enough to house a café AND a museum, you know there's some history here! The Port Gamble general store seems to be of a community cornerstone, where locals and tourists alike stop in to pick up snacks, sundries and souvenirs. Regionally-themed apparel and accessories take up most of an entire wall of this multi-story edifice, with home décor items filling out most of the remaining interior space on the first floor. Around the corner at the back right of the room, you'll find the aforementioned café, which comes well stocked with locally baked pies and pastries, salads, sandwiches, snacks, ice cream, and a coffee/espresso bar, with attached dining space. In the upstairs balcony, you'll find a museum dedicated to sea life, both local and international, wrapping around the edges of the shop and filled to bursting with the shells and skeletons of myriad sea creatures, which is a fascinating diversion and adds a nice touch to this sleepy, seaside community shop. The stairs continue upward to a third level, which was cordoned off, likely used for administrative purposes. The staff were welcoming and friendly, approaching to greet us warmly (encouraged, I suspect, by the handsome Pomeranian strapped to my chest in a harness...but I digress!) and inform us about various upcoming events in the area, including a haunted tour of some of the historical homes along this storied strip of land. While it's a bit of a drive for us, coming from Portland, I took a picture of their calendar of events, just in case! Despite its diminutive size, Port Gamble was a highly-anticipated stop on my Puget Sound tourism to-do list. This picture-perfect Pleasantville, ostensibly little more than some gorgeous houses situated around an elbow-bend in the road, has a lot more to it than is apparent on the surface, just like the General Store in its prominent position at the heart of this tiny community. Such a cute shop! There's a beautiful shellfish museum on the top floor, some delicious goodies, soups, and sandwiches at the cafe, and all sorts of Washington themed souvenirs and fun knickknacks. My loudest laugh was a social distancing award t-shirt that featured an ape winning it for multiple years starting in the 1300s. There are some cute winter accessories such as scarves, hats and gloves, as well as comfy looking clothing, lavender products, honey, kitchenware, coffee, chocolate, cheese, and all the usual souvenir items like magnets, postcards, mugs, and snow globes. For any review, there needs to be a history with the type of establishment that you are reviewing. For instance, reviews of restaurants are really only worthwhile when you've been to a number of different restaurants. It makes a lot of sense, but for circumstances like this, it's no longer the 1940s and has such trips to general stores are likely limited. I bet we've been to three or four general stores in the past decade, but this one stands out for a number of reasons. First, they have an aquatic life and shell museum upstairs. Never seen that before! Next, they have a great beer and wine section, as well as a lovely selection of old-time candy, along with a Delightful café and lots of other trinkets! The folks working here are super friendly and very helpful! The place is located at the end of the main Drive in Port Gamble and there's a spot we have heard from many people that we should stop by. I'm glad we finally got through! Aside from grabbing any number of snacks or beverages, we and our kids are like loved the shell museum on the top floor! I think most of the stuff you may have actually been from the treasure trove that Ariel from the little mermaid kept. There are some amazing shells and VERY large crab exoskeletons, many of which are from a long time ago.... Like 1800s long ago. The place has got a great nostalgic americana type of feel and is the sort of place that you should definitely stop by if you're in the area. You can spend a couple minutes in here or a couple hours, totally depending on what you're after. It's a super cute store and cafe that everyone should check out. It's clean, the staff is mostly friendly and given the options it's a good choice if your in the area. I was in the area for work and needed something for lunch. Being a vegetarian, my options are limited but I thought I might be in luck here. Sadly, there was one option. I ordered the avo-veggie sandwich (because, again lack of options) and was told it was a 25-30 minute wait. Not ideal, but they were busy so I get it. About 30 minutes later they realized I was still standing there and asked me what I'd ordered. Points to them - they quickly made my order and I was on my way. The sandwich itself had potential but it was impossible to eat. The avocado was yummy, the chive spread was legit, bread was ok (not the amazing thing I had pictured when I thought of rosemary bread) but the overloaded, thickly sliced tomato and cucumber just slid right out of the sandwich when I tried to pick it up. Overall, for almost $20 for a sandwich and an iced americano I probably would have waited till it got to Panera in silverdale for better bang for my buck. read more

You're walking back into time when you walk into the Port Gamble General Store, which was still a general store back in its day. The building is in the center of this small, historic town, so it cannot be missed once you visit Port Gamble. We came here to check out what was in the general store, not really needing or wanting anything. We just love historic buildings and wanted to see what it looked like inside. Plus, they allow dogs! The general store is three-stories, with its shop on the first floor and the second story serves as a seashell museum! How cool is that? The highest story is for employees only. The shop on the first floor had nice, eclectic items and gifts. Nothing too cheesy, and everything was well-organized for how many gift items were here. In one section, they sold food and drinks, which were all locally-made. There was also a cafe towards the back area where you can get coffee, pastries and ice cream. The seashell museum on the second story is why you should visit the Port Gamble General Store. The entire floor was decked out with cases and displays of different seashells and pictures of marine life. From what we read, a man who lives in southeast Asia started the collection, and the staff at the store kindly manage the museum while he's out traveling. It was cool to see the different shells from different parts of the world, which cannot be found locally. A little slice of history and marine life are found at the Port Gamble General Store. Parking right out front on the street is easy to find and is the center of the town, so is easy to access and check out while visiting Port Gamble. We weren't expecting all that much when we visited this store, but left pleasantly surprised by all that's found here. read more

The candy and local foods section is a perfect place to choose a gift to remind you of your stay in Kitsap or, perhaps, to thank your host for introducing you to such a lovely place. The restaurant is in the back of this charming general store. The coffees and sandwiches we had here were worth the stop. Veggie sandwich and salmon sandwich were favorites. One in our party went back for ice cream, too, as they serve from a local creamery and have intriguing flavors, like key lime pie. We went here today, ate at the cafe and were pleasantly surprised. This actually wasn't like one of those places that people seem to go to only because it's "local" and "not a chain," and the food is still garbage. I ordered a horse and cow sandwich and my wife ordered a plain bagel with herbed cream cheese, tomato, shaved red onions, and capers. The pastrami on the horse and cow sandwich was very juicy and tender and was one of the better pastrami sandwiches I've had in a while. The cream cheese on the bagel was quite delicious and fresh tasting with the herbs and didn't taste like store bought cream cheese. If you like cream cheese, this will definitely satisfy your fill. The bread on my sandwich and on the bagel were lightly toasted and pleasant. I took off 2 stars because the red onion was cut a little clumsy. Instead of a few rings on my sandwich I had a whole slab and my wife had the same issue. We love red onions, but we definitely had a bite or two where we had tears (and not from happy tears). I came here for the first time with my mom. It was a beautiful overcast day, with clear views overlooking the water at the streetside tables. The Mango Curry Sandwich and Maple Dijon Vinaigrette Salad were really quite good.
