This is the second time this season we've tried Port O Call...and both times, it absolutely sucked. I got the perch dinner, which I've posted a picture for you below. Not only did it look like shit, it also tasted like shit. Burnt. Charred. Shit. The potatoes were definitely cooked a few days ago and reheated today. My friend got the spicy chicken nachos. Just as shitty. The chicken was dry and bland, not at all spicy, like they claim. Old onions and peppers. I think the cherry on the sundae on this terrible dinner for me was the guac. Are you kidding me? Brown guac. Another picture for your viewing pleasure. It's a gorgeous day and the harbor restaurant isn't even remotely busy at 6:20. Watered down drinks and garbage food. Now I know why.

Po boy sandwich no bigger than my fork

After seeing chef Bobby on the news making all this great looking food that looked amazing and talking about his new restaurant Port O Call in Algonac my wife and I had to go there and try it, so we did. What a joke. I ordered the po boy sandwich and it had 3 really small pieces of shrimp and the bun I think was just a hot dog bun, and it was $14.00. My wife ordered the bbq shrimp appetizer that said it was suppose to be jumbo shrimp but they were no bigger than the shrimp that was on my po boy sandwich, and it was $16.00. Said to say we were very disappointed and we will never go back

We love the food and atmosphere here. My favorite is the Pesto Chicken sandwich. It is very tasty. You can enjoy sitting outdoors and be a part of the energy surrounding you. Lots of drink choices too. Entertainment on certain nights indoors and outdoors. If you have never been here before, check it out.

Michigan salad is my favorite!! Fun atmosphere, friendly staff, and amazing food! Everything is made fresh! The bartender, Julie, makes amazing drinks.

Service can be erratic and clannish. The seasoned wait staff usually go straight to the regulars or larger parties. The inexperienced wait staff get everyone else. They try hard. It can get loud in here as the open bar spills straight into the restaurant. Decor is Gar Wood nautical. Crowd is full of boaters and haggard Algonac locals...think deep wrinkles, blotchy skin, cigarette coughs, and the exchanging of muskrat recipes.

That's how I'd describe Catch 22. This does not look like a cutting edge restaurant. It looks like the kind of restaurant your parents ate at in the 80s (and the kind I ate at in the 80s). That's not totally fair, because it does have a nautical charm that represents the community. But, of course, the food is what matters most. It starts right away with freshly baked bread (how many places since the 80s do that anymore?). It was served with a sweet butter, but they have no problem providing a regular butter. We were told the mushroom soup was good, but the waitress undersold it. It was rich and savory and flavorful, the kind of soup that makes you wish you were at home so you could lick the bowl. My wife was territorial about sharing her salmon, with good reason. This is a fishing community that prides itself on the quality of its seafood. I loved the flawless preparation of the sliver of salmon she reluctantly shared with me. I didn't mind because the ahi tuna was magical. I offered her some, but she was happy with her salmon. Her loss. I ordered it medium rare; I enjoy my tuna steak the way I enjoy my beef steak. And, this was a beautiful cut of tuna. It was encrusted in peppercorns and sesame seeds, giving it a little bite. Take that, Gordon Ramsay! I got it with a side of perfectly lumpy mashed potatoes, with robust dark gravy on the side. Combined with the tuna, it was a lot of food, but there was never any doubt I was going to eat every bit of it. I ordered a local brew, Anchor Bay Noble Mutt red ale. Not as malty as a typical red, which I enjoyed. It didn't interfere with the meal. The service was also very quick, and cheerfully rendered by our server. It's not cheap, but there's no way something that good should ever be cheap. We're already trying to figure out the next time we can come back here.

I got the perch dinner 1/2 pound and it was large enough to bring home half as leftovers. I had the choice of soup, salad or coleslaw. I got the salad which was probably a mistake. The salad was lettuce, some of which was brown, with a couple cherry tomatoes and a few slices of onions. I asked if they had balsamic vinaigrette dressing and the waitress brought me vinegar for dressing. Oh well. Then I had the choice of fries, mashed or redskin potatoes. I got the redskin and they were pretty good. My friend got the black and blue burger which comes with potato chips but he upgraded to fries. He really enjoyed his burger. If I was in the mood for perch again I would go and eat there again.

For a small place, there's a good selection of drinks. But, we were hungry, and we definitely came to the right place. I ordered the Fair Haven Po Boy, which was billed as a beef brisket, but seems a lot more like a roast beef sandwich. Fortunately, it was good, and there was a lot of of it. The onion rings were robustly battered, and cooked properly so there was a nice crunch to every bite. There were only two servers at that time, but they were able to keep up with everybody, and the food came out quickly. Definitely worth a return visit if I'm in the area.
