The port of Hilo is used by the Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) when Hilo is on the itinerary. Good place to disembark- covered warehouse to walk through after leaving the cruise ship to visit Hilo. Security at the port of Hilo speak English well unlike the Maui port Security in my opinion. The Hilo Internacional Airport is nearby. My places to eat and shop nearby.

Good company to dive with out of "A" Bay, but I am not fond of the dive sites north of Waikoloa…read more My family and I were staying up at the Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel and the 10 mile drive down south to hop on the Lani Kai was really convenient. I booked the trip through Ocean Sports that has a shack on the beach at "A Bay" also known as Anaeho'omalu Bay. My sister has lived on the Big Island for a few decades and I visit quite often, but I still give up on pronouncing most of the Hawaiian names. DIRECTIONS TO A BAY: If you are heading south from Hapuna Beach turn right at the second light which is Waikoloa Beach Drive. Go past Marriott and make a left when you see Kolea Resort. There is a gate, but look to the left and you will see the public parking lot. Park and walk down the path through the lava field and you'll see the Ocean Sports Beach Shack. Check in there and you'll see the Lani Kai sitting in the water. See my photos. WEBSITE: http://www.waikoloacoastdivers.com PHONE: (808) 895-8387 MY TRIP DETAILS: Date: Thursday, August 23, 2012 Time: 8:00 a.m. to noon COST: $177.00 for two tank dive, including the gear. Walked out into the water and boarded the Lani Kai. Met James and Brooke and we headed north to our first dive site near Puako. All the wet suits, tanks and BC's are provided. James Bach was our captain for the day and Brooke Landt was the Dive Master. Captain James headed north toward our first dive site. On the way there we saw a huge pod of dolphins and we all headed to the bow to take photos. Our first dive site was near Puako. It wasn't my favorite place, but we went through some lava tubes. I don't recall seeing any memorable sea life while down below. James and Brooke caught two big Ono on our way to the second dive site near the Hilton Waikoloa. We saw a blacktip reef shark and some Horned Helmet Snails which were cool during our second dive. I think the next time I go diving on the Big Island I will concentrate on sites south of Kailua-Kona because I think the sites are much better. The Lani Kai was convenient for our hotel though, so we didn't have to drive an hour or more to board one of the vessels down south.

My friend recommended this trip as it was the highlight of her Hawaii cruise. I was so happy to…read morehave been able to book this excursion as not many sights were available on Christmas day. This is right on the cruise terminal port and quite easy to walk to. The check in area is in a hotel called Courtyard King Kamehameha's Kona Beach Hotel. I would recommend to check in early as 15 minutes before your tour departs, they guide you to the water shuttle. Once you get on the water shuttle, it takes you to the submarine. You need to be able to climb a ladder to get into the submarine. The space is a little on the tight side and there are no backs to the seats so work on your abs before the trip! The air inside was cool and constantly recirculating so it did not feel stuffy. Everyone gets their own porthole to look into the ocean and there are fish identification cards in front of you. The submarine can get to 100 ft pretty quickly and I was surprised that my ears did not get plugged up. We saw lots of fish that day. Some get really close to the submarine. We even saw a school of fish! My only disappointment is color. At those depths, everything has a blue tinge so sometimes it was hard to identify the fish. The operators and tour guides were so nice and informative. This was one of the best tours I've had on this trip. Thanks again for a great excursion!

We went down over 100 feet, and we saw so many different types of fish as well as two shipwrecks! Our guide, Eden, was full of helpful information about the sea life and local culture and history, and she was unendingly patient with one of my kids who had a million questions for her. She didn't mention tips, but at the end, she got a lot of cash from all of us because she absolutely crushed the tour. My only nits were 1) finding the meeting place was not obvious because it's inside the neighboring hotel-- not sure if we missed those instructions somewhere. And 2) we donked our heads twice when looking out the viewports when we were looking at some fish-- not because the submarine was moving too fast, we just got excited looking at fish hah. Anyway, some padding would have gone far. Anyway, I know it seems touristy, but this one is actually worth it-- so much that we've done it twice over a couple decades!

I'm telling you I have been fishing out of Kona 4 times and have done a little catching but it mostly turns out to be a nice boat ride. Expecting another nice boat ride.... I was super impressed when Captain and his deck hand. Started our adventure with almost towing in a boat on fire. Right there I thought it showed great character in them. Then we went out off the shore a ways and they fished for live bait. We then tried for Ono but one got away. After that we headed out for big fish. The captain kept in contact with other boats to see what was happening. He did not give up and sure enough we caught a Marlin. What a great day! They didn't even blink an eye when I cracked a beer at 9am lol. Great captain & crew I will be back and use the

The captains admitted they were unaware of the shift, which significantly impacted our experience. While I understand that fishing is unpredictable, we caught nothing in an 8 hour day, fishing in the wrong location for half the day did not help. For $1400 the captains should have a better understanding of where the fish are, especially since their website advertises their expertise in finding the best spots.

If you're even thinking about booking a charter in Hawaii, stop looking and book with Captain Brett…read moreand Noah at Humdinger Sportfishing. Yesterday was hands down one of the most unforgettable experiences I've ever had on the water. They absolutely blew the day out of the water in every way possible. I went into this trip with zero expectations. Honestly, I was just excited to be out on the ocean, enjoy the scenery, and soak up the experience. If we caught something, great -- if not, I was still going to be happy. But Captain Brett and Noah had other plans because they put us on SIX fish!!! From the very start, you could tell you were in the hands of true professionals. Captain Brett knows these waters like the back of his hand. He was constantly reading conditions, adjusting, and putting us in the right spots. It never felt random -- it felt strategic. You could see the experience at work. And Noah was absolutely incredible on deck. This was my first time ever fighting a fish in the chair, and I couldn't have asked for a better teacher. Fighting big game fish is intense, and Noah was calm, patient, and clear the entire time. He coached me through every step -- when to reel, when to breathe, how to stay steady -- all while keeping the energy positive and focused. Never rushed, never frustrated -- just steady encouragement and guidance. That made all the difference. Beyond the fishing itself, the vibe was just right. Professional but fun. Focused but relaxed. They made us feel comfortable, confident, and genuinely excited the entire trip. You can tell they love what they do, and that passion shows in the results. If you're looking to spend a day on the water that you'll be talking about for years, Humdinger is it. Captain Brett and Noah don't just take you fishing -- they deliver an experience. We will 100% be booking again.
