I'd never been -- the station is only three years old -- so I stopped by Sunday to (pardon the expression) 'case the joint out.' Good thing! I entered at Grand Central Station, followed signs and walked. Then walked some more. Took escalators, maybe an elevator. Finally ended up at ticketing. I don't think I would have allotted enough time if I hadn't known the layout beforehand. It was off hour. Not many people there. The customer service rep, a wonderful woman named Heather, wanted to make sure I knew what I was doing. She actually left her post to show me the tracks and helped me get my bearings. (Guess what! Heather was there Monday morning when I returned. I felt like I was seeing an old friend!) Here's a tip for everyone: If you don't want to deal with the underground labyrinth, look for the elevator on Madison off 47th Street. It'll take you directly down to ticketing and the waiting area. And specifically for older folks: To reap the senior discount, purchase your tickets the day of your trip, not before. There's no upcharge to buy tickets on the train. If I heard correctly, senior fares are the same for peak and off-peak -- but don't quote me on that! This station is light, bright, much quieter than Penn. Bathrooms are infinitely better. Now that I know what I'm doing, this may become my station of choice.

There are escalators and elevators to get you down and there are some vendors on the concourse level as well. Bathrooms too and it does connect with the "main" part of Grand Central. GC Madison mainly serves the LIRR.

When I go to the train station is usually clean and is now very updated compared to the one I use in Babylon. It's kind of behind sunrise across from Mulcahy's and the spoon. On that side, where you can go in to talk to an employee to get tickets for the train, there is a screen on the outside of the building with a list of trains that are going to stations and it tells you if they're on time or not, which is nice. And also tells you what time they're coming in so that way you're not running and guessing when you get there. I like the fact that they have it on the outside because now you don't have to run in the building to see if they're on time or late.

Reload your OMNY card at the station before heading to the turnstyle or pay with your credit card - tap and go. The message boards display when the next trains are arriving which is helping to know how far along the trains are especially if one misses the train and has to wait. Depending on which entrance one goes down, it can be a trek to get down to the subway if one is going uptown or downtown...trial and error until one knows their way around.

Honestly, it seems more reliable than the E train, especially in the morning and I can always get on an Astoria bound N train. Sometimes I have to wait for 2-3 Queens bound E trains until I can squeeze on. The N Train deserves more respect from me instead of just sitting there, waiting for me to take it while the E train gets my attention, but as the saying goes people only take advantage of you if you let them. So you just sit there and wait, N Train, and I'll call you when I feel like it. Until then, we don't know each other and so help me if you say anything to the E train, it might get ugly.
