This is a very cool spot for happy hour or drinks in general. Porter Kitchen strikes me as a low-key kind of place, however, I can imagine it has a different vibe during the day. The staff seem to be very attentive and extremely observant. There was a businessman who, with a group of colleagues, dropped his Porter or Stout pint beer. The busboy noticed and, get this, sprinted to get a broom to clean up the spill. The busboy didn't sashay across the restaurant, he sprinted with purpose. My friend and I stopped mid-sentence to watch his hustle. We were both impressed. The seating areas of the restaurant are spaced out well, making it very comfortable so that you are not sitting right next to another party. And while there were quite a few patrons in attendance, the noise level wasn't off-putting. I love that! The filet (steak) sliders were tender, JUICY, and seasoned well. For drinks, I ordered an Old-Fashioned neat which was spot on and my friend had the red wine offered during happy hour. We both ordered another round not only for the price but for the quality of the cocktail and wine. When the waitress asked if we wanted dessert I perked up because it never crossed my mind that they served dessert so I ordered the pumpkin cake. The shape of the cake was round as a small ramekin and tall like a shooter. The cake was delicious. Moist with bits of walnuts on top of a buttercream frosting and sprinkled on the middle buttercream frosting layer as well. Porter is only open M-F. I must say, I've traveled the world, but this was one of the best Salmon and Steak dinners I've ever had! I was on a date and all I remember was thinking wow, this is some of the best food I've yet to have in Chicago, maybe my entire life. Let's just start right there! Items: Salmon* $29 Lemon, olive oil, charred broccoli -- It was absolutely PHENOMENAL. It was very easy to cut and it literally tasted like heaven. I will say, that close to the end, I did need to squeeze the lemon on to bring back some flavor. Maybe it should marinate longer. Steak Frites* $31 Beef fat fries, garlic aioli, herb butter -- Another PHENOMENAL dish. I was in love with how easy it was to cut. I member spending over $90 on a steak at STK Steakhouse (no shade to them) and it was not half as good as this. It was actually very chewy and hard to swallow. Porter's steak was pure meat, done medium well. It was amazing! -- Now, I love potatoes and I eat fries very often. No, these were not the best fries I've ever had, but they were still good. It came with garlic aioli which has an acquired taste. I didn't necessarily like it myself. I'll put you guys on to something. Try mayo next time. They sell street fries as such in Poland and they're delicious. Maybe it was for the steak. If so, I'll try it on there next time. Crispy Brick Chicken $23 Fried rosemary, roasted garlic, Yukon gold potatoes, arugula-parmesan salad, chicken jus -- It was beautifully presented, but I'm sorry this chicken was just not it. I would reevaluate the seasoning. It was pretty bland for my liking. I saved it for my dogs. It has high reviews on the website, so clearly it's worth a try regardless of my experience. -- I loved everything else that came with it though. Balsamic is my favorite dressing! I never thought to try it with potatoes. Loose Goose $13 Grey goose, combier blackberry, lemon, agave, sparkling water -- I like sweet alcohol so this was perfect for my liking. I had another drink that I cannot remember the name of. It had a strawberry and mint in it. It was okay. Complaints: No military discounts. I'll be emailing the General Manager to attempt to establish one. -- You have to hike to the bathroom. (exaggeration) Can we start getting some hot towels? -- I did not like my water being poured before I arrived, but again, I was on a date so he may have possibly done so. -- Please tell the guy who brings out the food that foodies may arrive and they'd like to record. I understand this may be inappropriate to some, but it's free advertising and it's apart of our experience. He seemed annoyed or at a loss of what to do.. It's okay. Overall: The vibes were great. -- The waitresses were really nice. You could tell that their team has a great bond! -- The scenery was beautiful! The walk there was beautiful as well. Happy hour here exceeded my expectations. I had been meaning to come here and finally bit the bullet today. It took me a bit to get my bearings as I was not familiar with the office building in which Porter Kitchen & Deck is located, but the payoff was an excellent glass of Sauvignon Blanc (half price from 3:30-5:00 pm for happy hour) and a delicious tuna tartare. The service was attentive. There was a buzz at the bar but it was not raucous. It was fun looking out the floor-to-ceiling windows at the watercraft on the river. The &Deck part of the equation is not as large as at some other nearby outdoor drinking and dining spots but there is a decent amount of table seating. The beer list is written on a chalkboard and offers a variety of local selection (Ours) and other sourced offerings (Close By). There is even a coconut porter from Maui brewing. Another, larger chalkboard features the various iterations of Martinis in a handy-dandy list, including a rundown of available garnishes. The patron next to me ordered a filthy Martini. I look forward to returning in the near future to sample one of the perfect Martinis with blue-cheese stuffed olives. The bar itself is also worth a look as it is covered in distressed leather. I found this to be a thoughtful and memorable touch. The atmosphere is relaxed and refined. There were people at the bar dressed in shorts, and others in business casual. Everyone felt welcome. Great service, beautiful atmosphere overlooking the water. Our server brought out dessert because we were there for a bachelorette party.

We had a reservation for a midweek lunch and were seated within minutes. However, it took a long while for our server to come by and offer us some waters and then come back around to take our order. In her defense, it looked like she was one of only two servers for the whole dining room which was a bit surprising since it seems like Porter Kitchen & Deck is a pretty popular lunch spot. Meanwhile, there were five or six ladies crowding around the hostess stand. The restaurant is well-located and offers indoor and outdoor seating right on the river. The decor is chic and sophisticated, and very fitting for the classy lunch crowd. When our food finally arrived (about 45 minutes after we were first seated), it was okay. The chicken cobb salad was colorful but lacked flavor and my co-worker said her poke bowl was mediocre. We expected just a little more for the price. Porter Kitchen & Deck is a great location for a lunch meeting if you have time to spend and don't need to rush back. But I personally was not impressed and probably won't be back. read more

Not absolute perfection, but delicious given that there's really not much else in this part of Chicago. My wife had the pappardelle with short ribs. The dish was well-constructed, even though the burrata was a little cooled off from being placed cold on the plate, but it was still very good. I had the Italian beef sandwich, which was very good, but could have been constructed with a little less hesitancy by not putting everything on the side and just building the sandwich the way it need it to be. I took my team and our leadership here to celebrate one of my associate's 20th work anniversary. The place is LOVELY. It a beautiful space overlooking the river, and I will definitely be back for an after work snack and drink once we have nice weather back in what will feel like a thousand months (yay, Chicago winter!). They had their Christmas decor up as well, which served to make it a cozier, warmer environment as well. The food was pretty good. I had the grain salad, which I LOVED. It's hearty and flavorful, though when butternut squash is the second ingredient, there should be more than 3 potato-chip-sized pieces. It was more of a garnish than an ingredient. Otherwise, I loved it. Five of the group got the award-winning burger. They all thought it was tasty, though not an $18 burger. It was quality and they enjoyed it, but no one seemed to think there was anything special enough to warrant to price. The chicken sandwich and fish tacos also had good feedback. This place has great views of the river. It's a pretty fancy restaurant located in the big round glass bldg. It has a small menu. I just got truffle fries and my friend got the sliders with a side of truffle fries. Sliders were ok- the truffle aioli sauce was good. The fries were ok. They were pretty crunchy and not super flavorful. I would just go for views of the river and overpriced drinks. :) read more

Let me start by saying I love the staff, they were friendly, attentive and had excellent customer service. But I think management dropped the ball big time. We decided to go to Porter due to the great reviews on Yelp. We arrived and at first we were worried my X-Man T-shirt and jeans would not be up to snuff for such a luxurious location but we were assured it would not be a issue and were seated at a very lovely spot by the water. The waitress was very nice and I think any restaurant would be lucky to have her. I ordered the Lobster Roll and my wife a Mac and Cheese with lobster. I thought my roll was excellent but once my wife began to eat her meal we had a problem. She noticed a green substance on it that did not seem normal. We pointed it out and the waitress immediately went to the chef who said it was "probably" chives that got mixed in with the Mac and Cheese. My wife disagreed as the green substance was neon green and did not look like any chives we have seen. The waitress was very understanding and took the Mac & Cheese back to show the chef. She came back and said that the chef did not know what the substance was. I'm sorry, what?! I mean that is not the answer anyone would want to hear from the person cooking your meal. But they promised to make us a new one. What you have to understand about us is that we are very forgiving and don't like to make a scene. So we accepted the new food with the assumption that we would get a free desert or a discount on the bill at the end of the night. We did not expect a comp meal. My wife ate the new dish and she said it was ok so we moved on to dessert. I had the vanilla chocolate chip sorbet and my wife had the s'mores cake. My wife said that frosting and marshmallow were the only good thing about it. The cake was dry and rather bland. I had issues with my desert when I took a bite and realized something was off. It did not taste sweet but rather a alcohol like taste. I asked the waitress about it, she went to the pastry chef who yes confirmed it did indeed have alcohol in it but that it was a very minuscule amount. My tastebuds disagreed. I would have liked to have known that before I ordered it. My waitress apologized and offered to get me a different desert but there were not a lot of options, it was either the cake (which my wife confirmed was not very good) another flavor of sorbet or cheese cake. I'm from New York so a cheese cake from other cities just doesn't cut it. So I decided well it's probably going to be taken off the bill, so meh whatever. I ate it, reluctantly but I did anyway. The check came and we'll we were pretty disappointed with management. They did not comp any desert or give us a discount. We left and I had no recourse but to share my experience on yelp. We are in Chicago for a few days more. We have had a wonderful time in this city but I'm sad to say this was not one of them. read more

As others have noted, the deck atmosphere was terrific. Food was very good and fairly-priced (not cheap, but you're paying for the view over the river). My only complaints were the 3% "surcharge" that they continue to tack onto the bill as part of the COVID response (it's now just another way to nickel-and-dime you and makes me think less of the restaurant) as well as the fact that the service--which was pleasant enough--was too focused on turning over tables even though the place was not full. The couple next to us was finishing and got the bill as we arrived. The waitress probably passed by every 3-5 minutes to ask if they'd like anything else. We thought it was a bit unseemly as they were just trying to enjoy and evening out. We got a similar treatment--my wife was still finishing her entree when the waitress asked if we were thinking about dessert (we said "not at the moment"). We actually would have had dessert but that turned us off and when my wife finished we were quickly brought the bill we paid and promptly left. Another quick (and minor point) was that when we made the reservation they asked if it was a special occasion. I said it was my wife's birthday. When the confirmation of reservation came earlier that day it asked you to check if it was a special occasion--I checked "birthday." There was no acknowledgement of her birthday--not even the waitress saying "happy birthday" (I'm sure she would have had she known). That's fine, but why do they ask? read more

My boyfriend and I went here on a whim after I saw a review for this restaurant on TickTok. I'm so glad that we decided to try it out! This was the best meal we have had in months! The service was amazing all of the staff were attentive to us and I felt like they went the extra mile. We were seated outside overlooking the river which was a beautiful view. Porter and Deck also had great music playing all evening, which made the experience even better! My boyfriend had a chicken sandwich which he absolutely loved.! Went here with some colleagues for dinner while visiting for the week. Started with a bunch of apps and sides including the Brussels sprouts, octopus, and shrimp. These were the standouts of the whole meal! The sprouts were perfectly charred; the shrimp was flavorful. Absolutely would do a happy hour here and eat nothing but apps. They lost a star for the entrees, which were good but essentially just high end comfort food. I had the lobster roll. Where to begin!? Porter Kitchen & Deck really exceeded our expectations for our wedding welcome event. Two months out from our wedding, our original restaurant venue cancelled our booking because they decided they no longer wanted to sacrifice their entire outdoor space for a private event (a bit of a nightmare situation). This sent us scrambling to find a new outdoor venue to host a Covid-19 friendly cocktail event for 35-40 guests. In the 11th hour, we came across Porter Kitchen with its spacious patio/deck along the Chicago River, which provided a lovely view and breeze for our event in a centralized downtown location. Our guests could not stop talking about the food! Plus the staff (from hosts and servers to management) was unbelievably professional, kind and fun! They even let our guests occupy the space a little longer beyond our reserved time with no pressure to clear everyone out. It was a magical night thanks to Porter Kitchen! The space is gorgeous!! Beautiful scene etc... the sercice NOT SO MUCH. We asked if there was someone who comes to the table to serve and bartender says no that she was the only one serving, mind you apparently she doesn't see the man who is standing on other side of bar pouring a drink. ‍ I ask if they have Effen Vodka she gave me two choices but I could only have the regular Effen because she doesn't have a button on her register for it???? Came here for a group dinner. My colleague needed last minute reservations and they were able to fit the 12 of us, so good for that. We ordered a bunch of appetizers to share, including vegetable tacos, hummus, brussels sprouts, and charred squid. All these were devoured. Entrée wise, we did a mix of lobster roll, chicken, cheeseburger, and steak. The food was fine. No one was raving as sometimes is the case with us. I personally got the lobster roll and enjoyed the good portions of meat. The fries were thin and fine. At least four of us got the lobster roll and I got the least amount of fries. It was odd. Not fret, don't need to overboard it. The drink menu is average. They have several rotating drafts. Our waitress could have told us all what they were than having to repeat 8 times. This made ordering a bit longer. Tips: 1) Avoid a table by the deck door. It was humid when we went and the door by the deck wouldn't close when some opened it.
