Maybe it's just me, but I feel that you cannot visit Illinois and not stop for a hot dog. Hey, Chicago prides itself on their hot dogs and boasts that they are the hot dog capital of the world. I would say that is arguable (them being the best), but they still make a pretty incredible hot dog. I might have been a bit north of Chicago, but the hot dog culture here is still pretty solid. Old Chicago Red Hots has friendly service and the ambiance is kind of no-frills, but exactly what you would expect from a hot dog place. Go for a Chicago hot dog (to paraphrase the old quote, when in Rome, or north of Rome, do as the Romans do). I have always enjoyed a good Chicago hot dog and while I will always prefer a hot dog with chili, mustard, and onions, I was in Illinois and I do enjoy a Chicago hot dog. Absolutely amazing FOOD!! Cheese curds are awesome. Wisconsin may have run for their money. LOL. The original Philly cheesecake is delicious. And I am super picky. Fries are good as well. Soda was a tad off but that happens when you get it from the fountain. Service was great. They were really nice. The place itself was so cool, but then again I am Chicago Cubs fan so it was neat to see baseball stuff in it. We will be back again someday. Since we do live across the cheese curtain. read more

I've been to Old Chicago Red Hots a couple of times now and only had good experiences! The staff is always so friendly and great which makes for a really positive overall visit. They have some seats inside if you'd like to chill and eat but I've always just carried out. For true Chicago eats, wayyyyy out from the city, they do a great job of capturing the essence of our great city's sausages. I usually do the two hot dog combo (in the necessary poppy seed buns) which comes with fries and a drink. Love everything about it! We've also had the philly cheesesteak combo's which also did not disappoint. I have to try their burger next! Bonus points to them for the awesome bobblehead collection and bad ass rap memorabilia. Really excited about this spot! The decor gets a 5. The staff we're awesome and accommodating, they get a 5. The food was hit and miss, which brings the score down a bit. The angry burger was delicious but the patty itself was a little small, definitely didn't look like the pictures. Also the bun was a little stale, something that happens a lot around here. The fries are great, better than other local options for sure. The veggie combo is just onion rings and mushrooms, but well executed. The jumbo dog was cold, I'm thinking it was cooked like a regular dog and just didn't quite get done enough, but the bun and toppings were all on point. Overall pretty good, some minor execution errors but im hopeful they'll work it all out with time. I'll definitely be back soon to work my way through more of the menu. read more

Easy to miss this spot in the strip mall next to Starbucks, but glad I stopped in! Pretty good size menu, lots of options, classics. I will be back that's the test. Philly cheesesteak with the works on point. The meat is thicker cut compared to the real deal, but the flavor is perfect and tender. I'm already craving another one. Seasoned coated fries, better than most spots for sure. Chicago Dog no complaints there. I'd like to try other things on the menu but the Philly with the works will be a staple, plus not too many spots in the area even offering Philly so this will be on my go to local spots. P.S. wifey is all about the pizza puffs, usually gets them from Guys Grille in Wauconda, but Here you get the puff minus 1lb of grease. read more

Pretty solid Chicago style grill serving up all the local classics. Hot dogs and italian beef of course, but also gyros, pizza puffs and bosco sticks (if you know what those are your childhood was awesome). Nice decor inside too, including some cool MF Doom swag. My family and I recently came across this place and decided to check it out. On our first order, we got a mushroom cheesesteak, an Italian beef, Chicago dog, onion rings, fries and jalapeño munchers. The food was packed nicely for a to go order, the quantity was plenty. The beef was tender and just the right amount of saltiness, cheese was evenly distributed. It wasn't exactly like delassandro's in Philly but it was pretty darn close to it! The Chicago dog was exactly what we use to get from the Weiner Circle and most importantly, the people who ran the business were beyond friendly and polite. For us, that makes as much as an impression as the food because then, you don't mind spending money and giving them business! Great place! I've been going with my fiancé since they opened. Amazing fries, saw some people complaining about burger size but they do tell you how big of a patty you're getting and it says 1/4 lb on the menu. Overall great service, great decor and good food.
