This is our local Portillo's and the food is always tasty, fresh and comes out quickly. The inside is your typical Portillo's and sometimes the line gets long and wraps around and blocks the area. It's a small space for a busy location but they do their best. Sometimes the trash overflows due to the business and most likely low staff, like most establishments. In Chicago, hubby has to get his Chicago dog from Portillo's, the dogs can be better if they grilled them. Chop salad with grilled chicken was good, needs an Italian dressing. Restaurant is large with different stations from grill or another where you pick up the salads, or another station where you pick up your beverages. Service was very slow, but there looked like a manager training a person, so they were probably short staffed. What can anyone say about this long time Chicago classic...Portillos is one of the must-have experiences for anyone visiting Chicago and also for me who only gets to come back a couple times a year. The decor, the workers, the fun little call outs when your food is ready is all a part of the charm. I tend to stick to the Jumbo Hot Dog with everything on it and a side of fries. Sometimes, I'll add a shake if I literally don't want to eat for the rest of the day, but that's besides the point. They're food is always cooked perfectly and consistently. I don't have to worry about variety when I order something here because I know it will come out just like I remember it from the last time. You really can't go wrong with your choice. They offer catering, some beer and wine, and a host of different food options. I would recommend this fast food joint to anyone visiting. Just give it a try, you won't be disappointed! read more

First of all, this place has the best chocolate cake and eclair cakes! You can buy them by the slice and I believe a whole cake can be purchased as well! The ambiance is great here, with a lot of decor to fit the theme of the restaurant! This is a little pricier than fast food chains but since this is a sit down restaurant and the food quality is better, this is to be expected! I got together there with some family that I hadn't seen in a long time so it was nice to eat some great food and have some great company as well! My kids ordered a cheeseburger while I had the beef with extra sauce on the bun / sandwich. It was very delicious and the fries were very good too! On another occasion, my daughter had a friend visiting her so I took them all for lunch there and it was a nice treat! The food was prepared quickly and the cashiers were helpful with the menu as well! When I used to take a class in Chicago, I occasionally would go through the drive thru for a cheeseburger, fries, and coke for my ride home and it was always very tasty! This is the first Portillo that I have not been very happy going to. When you walk into what appears to be a very large restaurant, you realize how deceiving it is. There is a giant square in the middle of the restaurant which has some high top seats but no one ever appears to sit there. I do see a person or two cleaning tables but they can't keep up with the tables and filling the condiment section. The condiment section severely needed some attention to both cleaning and filling the ketchup containers. Now for the thing that bothered me the most. I ordered a regular beef sandwich double dipped with au jus on the side and sweet peppers on the side. There is a charge for the peppers but not the juice. When I received my meal we sat down and I took out the beef, the fries ((only about half of them were actually in the fry container) and one small container which had the juice. Immediately it was obvious that they forgot the peppers so I grabbed the receipt and the beef sandwich and up to the counter I went. There was actually no one waiting at the counter (very unusual) and after standing there for over a minute I became a bit impatient. I raised my voice over the noise and said "excuse me????" I saw both the manager and the man who seemed to be working look my way a few times but they virtually ignored me. Finally I said to the manager excuse me, I need some help. He then stood looking at me so I said they did not put my sweet peppers on the side. I showed him the sandwich in case he might say they are on the sandwich. Instead he said to me, are you sure, I said yes I am positive. He walked away shaking his head and handed me the peppers. The entire exchange irked me, did he think I was actually lying about it. Grrrrrrrrrr. I get back to my seat, opened my sandwich and realize that not only is my sandwich not double dipped but it wasn't even dipped once. Well I decided I wasn't going back up there and I would not endure that look again so I kept the Sandwich the way it was. Although the flavor was very good, I was not happy how dry it was. Other than the fact that I was there with people I am crazy about, the food and service did not measure up to other Portillo I have been to. Most likely a 4.5 out of 5 at least, but the service was excellent; the food had outstanding quality though the wait time had taken a bit it was due to the amount that I had ordered. From the delicious aroma of the burger and hot dogs to the taste of chicken tenders and not to miss out on the cheese fries, the food quality never disappoints at Portillo's The great atmosphere and grub make me rate this place so high, and while this eatery can be quite the wait at times, I just so happened to come here at a slow point which may have aided the rating. My wife, child and I are visiting the area and we stopped in for a bite to eat. The place was crowded but the line went quick. I ordered the double cheeseburger. It came out perfect and according to my specifications. The prices are kinda high here but the food quality and service is good. I recommend this location. Also the general manager was talking to tables and making sure the guests were happy. As of 3/28/25 this place is running great and under good leadership and it showed with the good customer experience. 2 stars are just for the food. Good as always. However, waiting over 10 minutes for a curbside order is unacceptable. It would have been faster to not order ahead. Also, get signs that actually stay put. Your damn sign fell on my car as I was waiting far too long for my order. When I select a time for my order to be brought to me and I don't get it until 15 minutes later, that is terrible terrible service. Avoid avoid avoid curbside. Came to this location today with my family on our first Chicago trip. I will say the food here is very good. All of us really enjoyed our food. The Chicago dog is awesome! Now to the negative. I am not sure if this is something they can help or not, but I was told only groups of 4 can sit together. Now it was my wife and I and our 3 little girls. All under the age of 5. So my wife and our girls sat together at a table and I stood 6 feet from them and ate by myself. My family stopped at this Portillo's location on the way home from Chicago. It's located right next to Gurnee Mills mall and is pretty big inside. Once you walk in you can order your food at the main registers which features hot dogs, beef sandwiches and other sandwiches or at the side registers which features mainly salads. It is kind of confusing since both registers have different pick up spots. On this visit I decided to go with the Grilled Tuna Sandwich and a side of cheese fries. The order taker wasn't very helpful in providing much details about the different fish sandwiches like if they were fried or not and what came on them. The whole pick up process didn't go very well either. Originally my order was served without the fries and when I went up to ask for the missing fries I got a very rude, "They were in the bag." I mean obviously if they were actually in there then I wouldn't be asking.. but whatever. We ended up getting them anyways and the food tasted mainly. Overall I wasn't very impressed with the service. The food was alright which is the only reason I'd give them a 3 over a 2, but there's definitely some things they need to improve on. read more

For the longest time Portillos has been my favorite place for salad or Italian combo but, they are reducing their quality by a lot. And not only that, the amount of meet has been reduced about 20%. I completely stop going to Al's italian beef for the same reason. Now Portillos is doing the something!
