It's a big fast casual Chicago inspired restaurant with a drive thru. Inside is decorated with vintage Chicago inspired items. The cheese burger is delicious, plenty of topping and condiments, you're going to need more napkins than you think. Chicago dog is fabulous. We tried some of the new sauces; ranch, comeback, and bbq this time, and we like all three. These package of sauces are very generous. The chocolate cake shake is AMAZINGLY good! Since this was a yelp lunch I went to the staff to place my order There are a number of things I love at Portillo's. Chicago beef, chopped salad and Chicago dogs The objective of this lunch was to try a new sauce. I tried smoked bbq on a hot chicken breast. The sauce tastes of smoke and a touch of vinegar. It was a nice flavor. The chicken breast was awful. It was like one of the frozen breast you do in an air fryer. It was full of gristle and was not the least bit spicy. The new bbq sauce made it edible They ask if you want the sauce on one or both sides of the bun. I just love a good Chicago dog and Portillo's is the king of dogs. This location in Fishers is just off the highway and convenient to meet friends. We found a table that would accommodate our group of eight easily. The menu is broad for all diets from Italian beef sandwiches to salads. I ordered the Chicago dog with fries. The $5 dog is perfect with fresh poppy seed bun, giant pickle and neon green relish. The natural casing dog is delicious. The crinkle cut fries are good, but not as crispy as I like. My table mates enjoyed different salads, which were huge. My granddaughter had the Italian beef sandwich, which is juicy and delicious. The dining rooms are decorated with fun and interesting memorabilia. I found myself staring at the walls instead of listening to the table conversation. An old car hangs from the ceiling. The staff is friendly and engaging and keeps the tables clean. I wish they had a kids menu, but you can buy a couple al-a-cart items such as hot dog or chicken tenders. The place fills up for lunch, but service is still fast. A drive thru is available for travelers that don't want to stop. I've been to Portillo's twice in the last week so let's just say I'm sort of a pro now! ha I love the "throwback diner" vibes you get when you walk in... If the diner had super convenient order screens to speed up ordering I mean... :) The first time, I went classic with a burger, fries, and a chocolate cake shake. Everything hit the spot, but that shake? Next level. Thick, rich, and packed with flavor. Honestly, it's one of the best I've had anywhere. Round two was a little more adventurous. I got the Italian beef with sweet peppers, gravy on the side, cheese fries, a drink, and split a strawberry lemon cake shake with my wife. Once again, everything was delicious. The beef was flavorful and juicy, though I might try a milder pepper next time just to get a little more balance and pop. The cheese fries were messy in the best way, and that strawberry lemon cake shake? Unreal. These shakes seriously rival anything you'd get at a local ice cream shop. Service both times was 10/10! Fast, friendly, and super organized. Right up there with Chick-fil-A in terms of efficiency. (Special shoutout to Rebecca, who helped us navigate the menu when we were completely undecided. I purchased the Chicago hot dog with everything on it, it was delicious and hit the spot at that time. I also purchased the spice cake that was being offered for the season, I honestly wished I would have gotten the chocolate cake. The spice cake was just ok, I felt like there was a bit of an aftertaste and heavy on the spice flavors. I could barely taste the caramel, I'd definitely say the cake was moist though. First time traveling to the Midwest and we were told that this is one of those chains we should probably try. Since my boyfriend loves hotdogs we decided to brave the snow and walk over and try it. Absolutely loved the charming retro interiors, very cute, very inviting but was very disappointed at the actual food. We ordered a little bit of everything (that we could stomach after traveling for 8 hrs). My boyfriend got the hot dogs of course and said that aside from the toppings, it really didn't taste like much. I also had the same to say about my Italian beef. It tasted like they soaked the meat in a brine of just salt water and no other flavor. The gravy they soaked my sandwich in just honestly made it soggy with no flavor added, just sog. The fries were underdone and stale :/ the cheese sauce was nothing special just processed nacho cheese, even though they keep encouraging you to get it when you order on their kiosk. The only saving grace was the onion rings and chili really. Maybe we should've tried the chocolate cake which is what I know they're known for but all the cakes are all prepackaged and shelf stable so I highly doubt it can really be that good, or good for me, more importantly. Sad but we'll keep finding some more midwestern gems eventually! read more

This is one of the worst experiences I've had and it makes me sad. I've always loved Portillos but this experience was awful. It took over 20 minutes to get a hot dog and fries. Numerous orders came out before ours that were ordered after. We asked an associate and she disappeared and never came back with an answer. Always have had Portillo's hot dogs when in and around Chicago area. Never been in a 4Wall joint of theirs. Very cool insides. The staff are all welcoming as well. The restaurant was clean and the staff very cordial. The food however was sub-par. I had the "Jumbo" Chicago beef sandwich. Arby's puts more beef in their French Dip than what was in my "Jumbo" and no where near the picture on the menu board. And the beef was dry and close to being tasteless. The restaurant was almost empty at 2:30 in the afternoon and it took over 20 minutes to get our food. Nothing in our order had to be cooked. I ordered my beef sandwich "dipped" but it wasn't; had to ask for a container of au jus. Not the Portillo's that I ate at last year in Fishers and definitely not up to the standards of the Chicago located restaurants. Most likely my last time. Next time I crave a Chicago Beef sandwich, it will be at Bronko's in Cicero. They make a fantastic Chicago Beef sandwhich. read more

So before work I decided to try an Italian beef sandwich. I ordered a reg sandwich with a side of fries and cheese. Ordering was simple using the kiosks which kind of kills any interaction with anyone that works there so that just seemed to put me off a little. No friendly faces, no greeting, no "how can I help you?" I waited for my food. It came fairly quickly. Right off the bat as soon as I grabbed the fries, they were cold and hard. They definitely were sitting there a while. I went to ask for fresh ones. Thankfully the young lady was nice and apologetic about it. But then she didn't communicate to the others that this is why I was standing there so her supervisor I guess sent her to do drive through so thankfully another young lady was paying attention otherwise I would have just been standing there. Got fresh hot fries and they were definitely better. The sandwich was decent but nothing to be exited for. I don't think I'll be back but at least I got fresh fries and I feel like it was definitely justified...the meal was $17. Pretty pricey. For a few dollars more I could go to longhorn and order a kids steak meal with loaded bake potato and drink for $20. I don't know what the hype is but ehh it's overpriced and overrated in my opinion. We have a newer Portillos in Fort Wayne but have never gone there because we have our staples. Over New Years Eve weekend, we stayed in Fishers and later New Year's Eve, we decided to give it a try given it was close and not too expensive. Each Portillos has its own decor and theme. The one in Fort Wayne looks like a diner. The Fishers' location has a gangster hideout kind of feel to it. Even tho we are always on the lookout for burgers, we had plans for New Year's Day to eat at a burger restaurant, so we decided to go the hot dog route. We each chose a chili cheese dog with a small fry and we split a chocolate cake milkshake. The girl at the register was very kind and answered questions honestly. It did not take long for our number to be called and we sat down to give it a try. I love a good chili cheese dog. A real good one. While this had plenty of chili on it and some cheese, the chili was at least reminiscent of Hornel's Chili with Beans. I know the taste quite well given I worked in a snack shop at a youth camp for many years and that's what was used there. Portillos seems to be known for its dogs. One would think the chili wouldn't come out of a can. But... that's what it seemed to be. Now the fries? The small portion was anything but small. Fresh, piping hot, and oh so tasty! We each ordered a side of cheese to dip the fries in, but that was not needed. The Chocolate Cake Shake has pieces of cake in chocolate ice cream. It was tasty. Rich, but tasty. If I were to go back again, I'd try a burger. I feel $6.00 and some change for a dog is a bit much. Especially if it's as I suspect and the chili is canned. Either way, I'm more inclined to go to Coney Island in Fort Wayne for my coney dog fix. I think it could be a great place if they made their own sauce. All in all, we now know what Portillos is about, and while it won't be a priority to return, if the mood strikes, we will give it another try. read more

I have been a customer of Portillo for years in and around the Chicago area. My wife is from the region and we wanted some great Italian beef. So Of course we settled on going to our local Portillo's. The line was non existent when we arrived about 7pm on a Saturday evening. We ordered the Italian beef combo one in a bun and one in a bowl. An order if onion rings and a chocolate cake shake. Then the wait began. It bitterly took over twenty minutes to get our order and then only after asking the manager to check on it. She was cordial and did offer a piece of cake as a piece offering. Now that being said the food was fresh and very tasty and what we expect. The chocolate cake shake was superlative. If not for the extreme wait and condition of the restrooms I'd probably have e rated it 4.5. They don't seem under staffed but maybe it was just an off night. The first time we went to Portillo's was in Chicago last year. That place was really good. While in the Indy area we decided to try this restaurant since we were going to be in the area. The restaurant was clean and the staff was pretty friendly. The hot dogs were good but not as good as the ones we got in Chicago. The hotdogs that we were served were not really hot more like warm and the buns seemed to have been to steamed. They were still ok but not up to what we had before in Chicago - so hence the 3 Star Rating. read more

We Showed up for dinner and as we asked up we noticed the permanent signage that said "Amazing Ribs". Then we came inside to order and saw 4 more permanent signs that say "award winning ribs". The king of Italian Beef! I usually order the combo: Italian beef with Italian sausage with sweet peppers and mozzarella cheese double dipped in their au-jus gravy. Whenever I get this to go it's very soggy and the bread falls apart by the time I get home. Today I ordered the au-jus gravy on the side and slathered it on I got home. The sweet peppers, cheese and gravy was gob of ooey-gooey goodness. This sandwich is comfort food on steroids. I am also ordered the strawberry shortcake for dessert. I lived in Chicago for 16 years and visited Portillos up there hundreds of times so I'm familiar with what the chain has to offer and what it's like when it's good. I've also been to several of the satellite locations in the Midwest and LA and find them usually lacking in comparison. I have to say that this location is the exception. It is the best Portillos I've been to outside of Chicago and just as good as the ones up there (although with more limited menu). Compare it to the one in Greenwood and it's not even close.
