We found serendipity last night at this Resturant. From a great waitress Yvette Marie , whose jaws must hurt from smiling so much to the best fried fish I've ever had with blistered tomatoes served on cheddar grits to the peach cobbler we shared for dessert. Closed early on a saturday night due to no customers. I get closing early for lack of business but they closed at like 7:45. At least wait till an hour before closing???? I plan to try this place when theyre OPEN, if the food is as good as I expect it to be then I'll change my review. Great food made from scratch. I had fried chicken mashed potatoes and cabbage. My husband had the smothered pork chop mashed potatoes and fried green tomatoes. The food takes a while to come out of the kitchen as you would expect with scratch made. Our waiter, Jackson, was nice. The owner helped out with delivering food to tables when the lunch rush started. The ambiance was nice. What you would expect in a nice country restaurant. For Juneteenth we were looking for authentic soul food. Found it! Even had cherry Kool aid! Fried whitefish filet with black eyed peas, light airy cornbread and greens were spot on. I am 100% black girl, well Ancestry.com might dispute that, but soul food is my jam. Recently, I was in Corpus Christi for work and I got to check out this local, soul food restaurant. This is a husband and wife duo with military roots who are cooking it up Southern-style at Portis Kountry Kitchen LLC. My colleagues and I ordered a number of dishes, but the standouts for me were the side-dishes. I absolutely loved the greens!!!! I ordered the fried chicken, macaroni & cheese, green beans, candied yams and peach cobbler. Personally, I enjoyed the sides more than the entree. Overall, we enjoyed the meal. At lunchtime, the restaurant was packed with locals. The service was just a tad slow, but the wait staff were friendly and accommodating. Next time you're hanging out in Corpus and you want to try something different, check out Porto's Kountry Kitchen. Y'all know how we do, you better go get you some. read more

This restaurant is located in the basement of the Wells Fargo tower. I parked in the parking garage which has free parking for WF customers for 1 hour. Otherwise its street parking which requires use of the cc parking app. Once you walk down the auto ramp back down to street level (since the entrance to the building is closed to visitors from the 2nd floor open air lot) you find the bank entrance along the south end of building. Pass by the tellers and curve around to the right, past escalators (which are also out of service) to the tower area. I enter the elevators and went down to B, for basement. After exiting the elevator, look left and you see the sign for the restaurant. The restrooms are also located adjacent to elevator. On my visit, they had fried chicken, baked chicken, turkey, and pork chops. I chose the turkey since it looked the best. I added green beans, mashed potatoes, dressing, and a roll. I believe they also had sweet potatoes and corn, but I didn't order those. The turkey was excellent, just watch for bones. Beans were probably from a can, potatoes instant. Roll was store bought. And dressing was good and dense, maybe homemade. The pound cake had a swirl in it and was decent too. They offer various desserts like cobbler and cakes and cookies. So I chose the pound cake. I'm not sure they make them here and may be made by a local company. The decor of the dining room is 80s and dark carpet. There is a back wall with a foil like wallpaper with white elite class from the 1920s, kind of ironic for this restaurant, which is likely black-owned. Music is from a speaker in the gift shop area and plays jazz/gospel. There is also music from the kitchen at times playing different music. In addition to soul food/country cooking, this is also a gift shop that sells ladies shoes, jewelry, purses and decor. Although the restaurant is unique, I can't really give it more than 3 stars, since it is hard to find and not much was homemade....and the overall taste of the food didn't thrill me. read more

Soul Good II! Once again folks of Corpus Christi a change of culture is in the air with great cuisine. As a Veteran-owned business formerly Portis Kountry Kitchen the upscale southern food PKK serves iconic southern dishes that please the palate. Recently, we had guests from across the world visit and they wanted to try southern dishes that they have tried once before but have not had it for some time. The bell rang in my head instantly, and recommended PKK for dinner. I explained the cuisine and even had my son speak of his experience dining at PKK. To our surprise it was live jazz night with Joe Holland Quartet playing. We ordered everything they had since no one could make up their minds. Fried pork chops smothered with gravy, Fried Fish, Fried Chicken, collard greens, cornbread, five-cheese mac and cheese, green beans, and many slices of their sweet cornbread. We even saved room for dessert! Damn it was Good! Everything was delicious and worth the extra calories. But what made our experience so memorable was the service and the ambience. I emphasis Service because our waitress was friendly and knowledgeable. She read our vibe and stoked the fire. Amazing woman! As true foodies that we are, and one who travels here and abroad it is really nice to have a restaurant that offers good food and good service consistently. As a first-time visitor, we did what most do, to find a place we've never been. Our direction ended and we were surrounded by tall buildings and no additional directions. We called and it turns out, we were in the right place, parked on the street (.25 cents for 30 mins) went inside the building. We were directed to the elevator that took us to the basement, and THERE was this eatery with signs saying "PKK" pointing us to the entrance. We get in and to our left is the display of the wonderful food ready to be enjoyed. The owners were so personable, that they asked, "Were you the folks that just called?" Well, my wife got the turkey and dressing, while I got the fried chicken. They had an array of veggies and everything was hot and ready. Sitting there and about to eat, I was prepared for yet an underwhelming attempt at soul food! I WAS WRONG! I was looking for my Mom, Grandmother, and Aunts to come around the corner from the kitchen!
