I recently had my McIntosh Mac 4100 receiver serviced and I could not be happier. One channel was not producing sound and a number of the buttons were sticky. It took several months for service, about which I was in informed up front. The unit now functions perfectly, and the price to repair was surprisingly reasonable. Got the call from Mike that my Pioneer SX-1280 was ready for pickup. I purchased it from a guy who said it had been serviced several years ago. It worked fine however I wanted the pros at Inner Sound to take a look and give it a tune up and I am glad I did!! They diagnosed an issue on one of the two output boards that the other guy had missed and that could have caused bigger problems down the road. They fixed the problem, put it on the test bench and brought everything up to factory spec. I especially like the fact that they give you back the faulty parts they replace!! This is the third vintage receiver of mine they have worked on and they have hit a home run every time. I sleep better knowing that it's going to give me and one day my children many years of listening pleasure. Again....be patient. I recently got my Sansui 7070 back from being serviced at Inner Sound and I'm very happy with the results. I had them replace the main filter caps, change out a broken speaker selector switch, replace bulbs, and fix an issue on the power supply board. Lead time was long, but they were up front about this when I first called. Everyone was friendly and approachable. It wasn't exactly cheap, but this is a specialty service and I'm happy to pay to keep my amp running for many more years. The shop's website goes into excruciating detail about prices and lead time. Maybe I was less unhappy than some reviewers because I was entirely unsurprised about the cost, etc. I dropped off a solid state guitar amp that was functioning (very) intermittently. The staff was extremely clear with me that the unit was no longer actively supported by the manufacturer, and if a proprietary piece was the cause of the malfunction, I might be out of luck. The shop called back LONG before I was expecting, telling me that they had been able to to use a different part to restore functionality. The amp, which I was otherwise going to discard, looks a little different, but works perfectly. I felt like the shop did exactly the work I requested, charged a fair price, and couldn't have been more transparent (in person and on their website) about what I could expect re: fees and timeline. read more

Not happy with the service nor the price. I took a vintage Sony ES CD player in last year as it was having issues reading the disc. There service and skills are terrible! 1) It took months longer for them to get around to than they estimated! 2) I told them not to mess with the tray belt drive and just look at the electrical issue. Well, they did - they removed a custom belt tensioner that I had installed, did not return it to me, and put in belts that are the wrong size and slipped - the exact reason I installed the mod as the proper size ones are not available! 3) They then told me the laser was bad/weak (not true) and that parts are not available. 4) They charged me $95 and gave me back a player which is worse off than when i took it in!!! The player went home in its original factory box along with the factory service manual I had supplied to them and sat for a year before I decided to get back to it. I took the cover off and found they had taken the custom belt tensioner. In that year, I came across a different model player that shared a common optical block. I swapped the optical blocks and the supposed bad one worked fine in the other unit without adjustment so there is absolutely nothing wrong with it and the fault lies elsewhere (which they failed to identify). I moved it back to unit I wanted fixed and have resumed work on it. Regrettably the alternate unit is a cd changer and therefore does not meet my needs. Brought in an old Technics SA-818 silver-faced receiver that was always a solid performer and I really appreciate its sound. The left channel quit working and I brought it in to Inner Sound to make it sound good again. The sign at the front desk says they'll have the until for up to 16 weeks before they'll call me about what they found. They required a $125 deposit and then I waited. Eventually Lloyd from Inner Sound called to say they cleaned the unit up good and the deposit covers the cost of the cleaning...its ready to be picked up, except that I see you also wanted a quote on replacing the speaker connectors with some gold-plated five way binding posts. "Yeah I'd like to know what that would cost"...Lloyd took a moment and then told me it would be an additional $125 to which 'I say 'ok' , 'I would like the flexibility of the upgraded speakers connectors. Weeks later I received a call from Mike who said they quoted the wrong terminals and it would be an additional $40 to upgrade speakers connectors. So I said yeah, go ahead I guess. A weeek shy of 5 months of working on the Technics I received another call from Mike who said the speaker terminals are in and look great, but that the amp needs another fix to the amp to sound and perform correct, and if I give him the go-ahead right now he can have it ready to pick up and take home later today. I questioned the call from Lloyd that said it was working perfectly with a good cleaning but Mike was confused and thought he made that call to me....but it probably doesn't matter because the call from Lloyd said it was performing excellent and was ready to take home, unless I wanted the speaker terminals upgraded, which I did. Ultimately the stereo got the treatment I wanted but it was $170 over the quote. So while the work was terrific, I experienced something less than what was communicated. read more

I took in my Nakamichi BX-1 tape deck in for a tune-up (belts, idler tire, etc.) and was concerned about the condition of the tape head. They took a look at it and were able to completely replace the tape head with another genuine Nakamichi head. It sounds fantastic, certainly better than it did and it runs perfectly. Great customer service and communication as well. We're lucky to have such knowledgeable people in our area who can fix this stuff, particularly the tape decks. Look up and down the west coast, you won't find too many repair shops like this left or even people with the arcane knowledge to properly do it. Sadly I won't be returning to Inner Sound. It was a complete shambles from beginning to end. I dropped off my Denon DJ MC6000MK2 mixer on 11/1/2022. It was fully functional except for some moderate humming/feedback whenever I plugged it into my powered speakers. I tried several speakers, same result. After the season ended I thought it was time to get it in for repair hopefully to pick it up in Jan/Feb. I paid my $125 diagnostic fee and dropped off my system. Got a call in January telling me it was ready, picked it up took it home plugged it in same result, still feedback, nothing had changed.? Returned it to Inner Sound again. A week later got another call, it's ready. Went in again, this time before I left I asked to plug it into a speaker. We put it on the counter same result..nothing had changed. Still feedback. Not sure why I kept getting called to pick up my equipment.? Maybe check the equipment before calling..? After many phone calls over almost 18 months decided this repair was going nowhere. Apparently they were unable to find the required part. I picked it up on 2/2/2024. Obviously I had to buy a new system over this time and decided I could use my MC6000MK2 mixer as a back up. Got it home plugged it in and it didn't power up ..nothing. Called them spoke to Lloyd. Wasted 5 minutes on the phone and realised I wouldn't be getting any compensation. Thought the least they could do was return my equipment in the condition it was left. I started with a system that worked (not properly) and ended with a piece of garbage and $125 less in my wallet. In the past year I had used Inner Sound to replace cones in several of my speakers and, although more expensive than other places I've used, the repairs were adequate. I then had a VU meter that was pegging wildly on it's own on my Technics cassette deck. I've had this unit 50 years and it has performed reliably the entire time. I'm a musician and rely heavily on my audio products. I decided I would give them a chance to repair something more complicated. I brought it in to Mike at Inner Sound on Jan.14th, paid the deposit for the estimate and was told they had a 4 week turnaround for repairs. 6 weeks later, Mike called and said they would need to replace all of the moving rubber parts (belts, rollers etc.). I asked him, "What about the reason I brought it in?...the pegging VU meter?" "Oh...er, yes, we would fix that too." I explained I didn't want to have the entire machine worked over. I just wanted to have the problem that I brought it in for, fixed. He then launched into the next 10-12 minutes of diatribe insulting me and 'educating' me about why this overbuilt, piece of equipment deserved to have the 'full' treatment and brought to 'optimum' condition. "I LOVE cassettes! I'm a cassette guy!", he said. "If you went to the doctor, they wouldn't just want to remove part of the cancer!", he said. "When we're done with it, your tape deck will SING!", he said. In short, he went on and on with every used car salesman trick in the book to get me to pay for the 'full' (non-necessary) repair. (I had NEVER had any problems with these things previously. The only problem that affected the machine at the time was the meter). I then explained that I was a musician and that due to Covid, I hadn't been able to work in over 2 years so I had to be very careful with my money. His response? "I don't care!", he said. I capitulated and had them do his recommended repair. When I picked up the deck in April and paid the remaining bill after they called and said it was ready, I was in the middle of a lot of projects so I wasn't able to test it out for about 2 weeks. When I did I found that my 'repaired' deck didn't play at all now. I brought it back again on April 15th, explained the problem and Lloyd said my machine would go to the 'front of the line' since it was supposed to be repaired by now. I suggested that it would be a good idea to test it before returning it to the customer and he said, "We always bench test our repairs in the back and then in the front before returning them". I agreed and yet wondered why it supposedly worked for them but not for me when I tested it. I also noticed that their sign now said repairs would be a 6 week turnaround. I picked up the unit again on April 25th after being told it was repaired and tested it right away. Now my unit had a very loud hum and now the other channel had a pegging VU meter! At this point, I started believing the many one star and 2 star reviews I had now read on yelp...there's a reason that some businesses have this low of a rating. Since it had been in their shop off and on for over 3 months my credit card bill with their overpriced charge was now due. I STILL did not have a working unit back from them so called my credit card company to reverse the charges temporarily so that they would have a chance to repair my unit properly and of course, then apply the charge when it was returned to me in working order...easy enough to do with a phone call. I brought the unit back after my testing it and explained that after 3 and a half months, it STILL wasn't working and they wrote up another work order. The next day, Mike left me a message that the problem was in the circuit board and since they didn't make that circuit board anymore it couldn't be repaired. No mention of a refund, no compensation for their failed attempt at a repair...nothing. My best guess is that they were tired of dealing with a machine they didn't have the competency to repair and since I cancelled the charge, they probably thought I wouldn't pay even if they, by some miracle, repaired it. (Their sign now stated repairs were an 8 week turnaround). I picked up my unit, noticed new scratches and chips on the wood grain on my deck and took it to Doug at Audio Specialties and he knew right away what the problem was. (At this point I wasn't taking it back to Inner Sound to fix the damage they caused). He repaired the circuit board in my unit in 2 weeks time and charged me less than the cost of Inner Sound's deposit before the repair! In my 50 years of being in business, I've NEVER been treated this way. They are either incompetent, can't tell the truth, or both! It is also possible that they have lost competent technicians this year. In any case, this business needs new ownership and attitude if they are going to stay in business. If not, they'll be out of business soon enough. read more

I brought in a turntable to get a little tune-up, some new bulbs and setup correctly. The turntable is worth about $150 or $200. I paid $80 for it originally. $326?!?!?! INNER SOUND charged me $75 just to look at it and I figured that the rest of the cost couldnt be much more than that. They charge me $326 in labor and parts! And it took 3 1/2 months!! Completely unacceptable. DO NOT use these guys unless it's your ultimate last resort. Stupid decisions were made all over the place. For example: new bulbs. Everyone knows you can get new bulbs from Ebay in 3 days for about $10. Well they ordered theirs from Norway and said they were stuck in customs for a month?? I call bull on that and then those special Norway bulbs were the wrong bulbs!! What is going on in this place I'll never know. I thought about just leaving my table with them and not paying the outrageous labor charges but itd been so long since I'd listen to records that I just decided to get my table and go home. I was dealing with an ongoing issue with a CD-Transport and finally took it into Inner Sound as recommended by the manufacturer. I paid the express service as I really wanted the unit to be repaired as soon as possible and I'm so glad I did because they worked directly with the manufacturer to troubleshoot the root cause and replaced a bad drive unit - all within three weeks. Do NOT trust this "authorized Roland repair center". I should have known something was up when the owner Mike was so happy to recognize a very common Roland part I mentioned needing replacement. "Hey, I know what that is!" He should. As an authorized Roland repair center - as the owner - he should know very well the most common part of an electronic drum, the cone sensor. Anyhow, that's nothing. Read on. After seven weeks of waiting for any information on my PD120 drum - just that they were waiting to hear from Roland (not that they have ever sent to my drum there) on estimates- I called again and asked more questions. I was then informed by the supervisor Lloyd that they had actually detected nothing wrong with the drum - he confirmed multiple times that it worked perfectly - but they were waiting on cost estimates from Roland for parts. (!) AND they were waiting on labor estimates from someone (?? - he couldn't tell me who over the phone. He said that when I showed up in person to pick up the drum - and give up my $85 deposit - he would then tell me. Wtf?). So, as supervisor he had no way of knowing what parts or what labor was being looked into?! Now get this: I asked him what sort of musician/person would want to pay hundreds of needless dollars to replace the main inner components of a perfectly functioning...anything?? His answer: "Ha ha. You'd be surprised." He was quite jolly the whole time with several "ha ha"s...which I guess makes it easier for him to speak dishonest nonsense in an effort to justify it, all to make money. I took my vintage Pioneer receiver to inner sound because it needed a tune up and I thought the left channel was bad. It took about a month and a half for them to put it on the bench (as expected, because they told me so), and then it was 1 day and it was done. I don't really think there are a lot of places to fix some types of equipment, and my issue was when I brought in a Motion Amp, which in itself is a task to find someone in the Portland/Vancouver Area to take on the task of fixing it. I have to say in the beginning I was frustrated with dealing with Motion Amp and Inner Sound, but I will say the end result is they were very fair, and helped in getting the difficulty of Inner Sound dealing with the Motion Amp distributor. Both companies seemed like they wanted to resolve the issue, but the communication between the two for getting the right part seemed a little astray---end result my Amp was fixed, and Inner Sound came through for me. And actually the end result is Motion Amp came through for me, and I am back in action on stage with my Motion Amp. (by the way, my Motion Keyboard Amp sounds much better than my backup Roland Keyboard Amp). A sidenote---it was easy to discuss the issue with my Motion Amp with the techs at Inner Sound...so yes, I would recommend them. read more

I brought my ADCOM stereo amp for repair to these guys due to a blown channel. They charged me a $65 non-refundable diagnostic fee to diagnose the problem and give me an estimate. After 2 weeks, Inner Sound contacted me to let me know they had found some failed components that needed to be replaced in order for them to find out if there were more repairs needed. Bottom line: Inner Sound wanted to charge me approx. $275 to make repairs which would allow them to determine if -- or not -- the problem was fixed, and then charge me for any additional repairs needed. I don't think this an above board way of doing business, and, well, scam-like. Inner Sound charges a $65, non-refundable, diagnostic fee. Then, they tell me I have to pay $275 for them to fully diagnose the problem. I tried to get the manager (Mike) to do the right thing and fully diagnose the problem for his non-refundable diagnostic fee, or refund me. He would do neither, and said this is the way his business works. I'm eating the $65 and picking up my amp. Bummer. read more

Nice enough people but 'nice' doesn't fix broken amps or receivers. Found them on Pioneer's website as an authorized service center and I took my SC-68 to them. This is the third repair shop I've taken it to for a very hard to identify intermittent static/noise in the front right channel. It's so intermittent it only shows itself once every couple days/weeks. I described the problem in detail, its history and my personal testing (including trying different speakers). Knowing all that Inner Sound only gave my receiver a basic on/off test and as such weren't able to reproduce the problem. All they did was run it in their shop and with that they wouldn't tell me for how long or how often but for certain they never did the one thing I asked them to do and that was open the chassis and give the circuit board a visual inspection. They even lied to me about that on a phone call. Now the receiver is back at home with the same problem and the owner at Inner Sound wants my speakers to test with even though I told them the unit exhibits the same problem with different speakers (this is after I asked for a refund). Inner Sound won't acknowledge they dropped the ball by shorting me a visual inspection. I'd think twice about taking your amp or receiver to Inner Sound and for certain only do so if it has a constant problem (not intermittent). Also don't expect a refund if they can't fix your amp or receiver. read more

Replaced an idler wheel for a Nakamichi tape deck twice. Not ready when promised. The first time, the idler wheel stopped functioning shortly after the 90 day warranty expired. Had it repaired again and charged again for the repair ($95/repair). When I mentioned the cost seemed high, they said replacement of the wheel was labor intensive. The second replacement by Inner Sound stopped working after 7 months of light use. The last repair occurred a couple of years ago or more, so if there's new management since then, maybe they've improved their policies. The experience has always just rankled and I haven't been back. I subsequently found that the part can be ordered online (http://www.eslabs.com/...) and installed by someone with no experience in doing so in 15-20 minutes. I replaced the wheel myself for the cost of the part ($9.95). It comes with a five year warranty. read more

Their web site is somewhat misleading as to the cost to repair things. I shipped my speakers to them, and waited 2 weeks for an estimate (too long). The estimate was much more expensive than expected when compared to other shops. Then it took another 3 weeks to repair apparently because they do not stock parts and had to order and wait for parts. Not cheap, not fast, but they do a good job. There's something to be said for doing it right the first time. If you have professional-grade or home sound equipment that needs repair, I'd recommend them in a heart-beat, with the following caveats: 1) It's a pain to find. They're buried at the back of a business office park with absolutely no signage. Go to the rear corner nearest I-205 and you'll see a small neon sign saying "Open". Congratulations, you've made it! 2) Payment is up front. Expect to pay $60-$100 up front just to look at the equipment, and more up front a week later when they order your parts. When you do pick up your equipment, expect to pay still more for labor. 3) Hours aren't what you're used to from a retail storefront. Most weekdays, they close at 1PM. (The Yelp hours are wrong) While they are open later on Tuesday, you're probably going to have to wait until Saturday morning to pick-up or drop-off your equipment. Expect a lot of phone tag if you work days and need to discuss repair options. read more

I've probably done a good 3-4 dozen transactions with them and have been happy with every single repair and interaction. I have always found them to be very friendly, reasonable in pricing, and high in quality of work. What more can I say? Well, I guess I'll say that I'd send any friend there. This shop is hard to find, but worth the hassle. They took in my ailing M&K subwoofer and returned it to me like new. The sub is once again a beast! Good job Inner Sound. Now the bad news, it did take a while to get the sub back. I dropped it off in September and didn't get it back until the middle of November. It took two weeks before it was even worked on by a technician. Inner Sound did clearly state that there was a two week wait. Unfortunately, I didn't get any updates. It would have been nice to get at least one phone call to let me know what was going on. All in all, I would recommend Inner Sound to anyone needing electronic repair. read more

Found these guys searching for an authorized repair center for an old Velodyne F1500 subwoofer. A brief phone call confirmed that they would be able to diagnose and potentially repair the subwoofer so I took it in. They completed the diagnostics work within the timeframe promised and provided a complete recommendation on the work needed to refurbish the unit. This involved a rebuild of the electronics and replacement of failed capacitors along with other components. It was a fairly costly repair due to the amount of work needed but worthwhile as the sub was otherwise in great condition. They were very objective and helpful, providing good information and answers to my many questions. The repair work was completed on schedule and I am very happy with the result. The subwoofer is back to fully functional condition and sounds great. Based on my experience, I would definitely use them again. Highly recommended. read more

I took a one year old Onkyo A/V receiver in for warranty repair. The CBL/SAT HDMI channel was only sending a partial signal to my TV resulting in a picture which was shades of yellow and magenta. The sound signal was also missing. After having the receiver for over two weeks Mike called me a told me to come pick it up, they said they had tested it and there was nothing wrong... I picked it up, brought it home, plugged it in and had the same result, this time with an annoying flicker also. I then did the same thing as I had done before the visit to Inner Sound. I moved the CBL/SAT HDMI cable to the GAME port. Result? A perfect TV picture with sound although on the wrong port. In other words, they couldn't bother themselves to do the simplest debug to try and reproduce the problem, but relied on factory tests that didn't do a thing to isolate the customer reported issue. A big FAIL for both Inner Sound and Onkyo. Never again. read more

Scammers! Don't bring your products here. Our Yamaha Receiver went out on us and Yamaha referred us to them as a partner. It was under warranty and they were to fix the issue. I dropped off my receiver and the man told me 1 week unless they needed to order parts from Yamaha which would only take a couple of days. After not hearing from them I called 10days after I dropped it off. The man on the phone told me they had to order the parts and they would have it ready for pick up on Friday. No problem I thought he told me the mother board or whatever board (not tech savvy) went out and needed to be replaced. I never heard from them so mid-day Friday I called and the man told me it was ready to be picked up. My husband went to pick it up and the man told him there was nothing wrong with it. He told my husband he never told me about ordering parts. He continued to argue and be rude to my husband about what he said. Told my husband that I was losing about what he said! Why would I lie about that? I just want my box fixed. Then he tried to sell him one of there used and fixed products! I think they ordered parts and kept them for their other products they try to sell. This guy and this business is a scam. I reported them to Yamaha. I would not trust them and would not recommend taking your products here. Yamaha apologize and replaced our box directly with them. read more

I brought my Pioneer 1080 in since the channels were going out in stereo. I paid the minimum $100 fee and was told it was fixed. I picked it up and brought it home with the same issue. I brought it back for no charge and had the exact same thing happen. Just a bummer. I brought in my Marantz Turntable because of the auto return was not reliable and am not sure they did anything. I took my old synth in for repair approximately two years ago, a Kawai SX-240. I should have known when the guy behind the counter said "Cool! We don't see many of these." that it might not be a good indication but they are listed by Kawai as a place certified to fix their equipment. Around a week later I get a call and I was told that these are old synths, there are a lot of things that could be wrong with it but that they weren't able to figure it out with the time allotted for the $100 initial checkout. The guy said if I was willing to pay "...what could be the equivalent of a used car" they could keep working on it but there was no estimate. He suggested I part it out since it is a fairly uncommon synth and the parts could be useful to other people. I picked it up and didn't have the heart to part it out, it was in really good shape physically and it turned on, it just didn't work right. It sat in my studio until recently when I decided to get one more opinion. I took it to a shop that was right down the street from their old location. The guy didn't charge me a thing to look at it. I get a call later that it was fixed and ready to pick up. The total bill was less than Inner Sound charged me just to tell me they couldn't find the problem. I asked the repair guy what the problem was. He said that the power supply wasn't giving a proper 5V to the rails. He rebuilt the power supply and changed out the battery and it worked perfectly. I don't know how a repair shop couldn't have seen an issue as simple as what the power supply is putting out. I'm giving them a bonus star because they are polite and they run a clean shop but I will not be taking any more gear to them. read more

These guys are great! Took my 40 something year old Dual turntable in for repair. Came back in perfect condition and working like new! I've also purchased equipment there and very satisfied. I took a guitar amp there for a warranty repair. I explained the symptoms and told them exactly what the electronic problem likely was. After a few days, I had to return to demonstrate the problem for them. While there, I offered to show them how to find the problem on the bench. They wouldn't do that because they claimed that they weren't paid enough warranty money to actually troubleshoot the problem. Instead, they wanted the manufacturer to send them all new guts instead of simply replacing a capacitor. My amp was there for nearly two months and not repaired. Finally I retrieved it and sent it back to the manufacturer, who verified that my initial diagnosis was correct and fixed the amp. read more

So I dropped off a Pioneer Spec 2 amp after spending 15 minutes on the phone discussing the problem (very intermittent) and what had been done thus far by another tech (who did find a problem but could not find the ultimate solution and admitted it, refunded my money and suggested Inner Sound) and asked if they could take this on, knowing the above. After a week and a half of crickets, I called and was told the amp had been burning in for a few days and no one had heard any issue (scratchiness in the left channel that came and went but when it came you KNEW it). I asked if they had opened it up and inspected the internals, checked the solder joints, anything.............nope. I'm sorry, I had a plan with the fellow on the phone who said he took my info down (where I explained all that had been done and suggested he call my other tech if need be) to implement, not listening to CD's for a few days. How could they not even open it up and look for cold solder problems? Nice folks but this cost me $50 to allow them the pleasure of hearing a vintage amp play CD's. Won't be returning. Audio Specialties will get all my business from now on. read more

BEWARE: There is no doubt in my mind that any positive reviews on this page were written by Inner Sound friends and family to contrast the terrible reviews that appear elsewhere. They not only didn't repair my speakers, but when I asked that they be returned, they returned one torn and one literally in pieces. They were indifferent, smug and frankly knew very little about what it is they actually do. And, they had the nerve to keep my estimate charge. If this review stops even one person from using Inner Sound, I did my job. read more

They brought my Tascam cassette recorder back to life, sourcing parts from the manufacturer and third-parties. It was a process. I can understand why the shop charges (what I believe to be) a minimum fee to compensate them for their time. If there are parts available and the gear is fixable, I am very confident in this shop's competency to diagnose and repair the issues. I believe the shop offers other services as well; my review is solely referring to my experience, which was bringing them a ~20 year old piece of malfunctioning cassette, audio-recording gear for repair.
