Love this place. Pick up made super easy or dine in the casual, rustic setting. Picked up a burger to go. I was starving so I thought I'd have one bite before driving home. Burger didn't make it out of the parking lot. Wow, yum. Ordered burger, soup and desert all for $14. Hard to beat! This is my third visit to Portobello's. However, my first time having breakfast. The servers were nice and friendly, but the service was slow. We waited 20 min for our mimosas. The pancakes were tough and dry. We waited additional 20 minutes for our to go boxes (never came ). We wasted our morning. Tucked into and sharing space with Zeph's wine bar and liquor store. FOOD: Deli and hot. Ate at noontime and we had the artichoke quiche, hero sandwich, split pea soup and two cold Sierra Nevadas. Hero was excellent and the artichoke quiche the 2nd best I've ever had (the first being from a small little restaurant in Berlin, FRG) which came with diced potatos on the side. The split pea soup was fresh and not canned - well made. Overall nice selections and lighter fare when you're tired of the heavy pub food in the area. Wine was very pricey - 9.00-12.00 per glass. Stick to the beers - 4.00 a bottle. SERVICE: Excellent, swift, and attentive - somewhat confusing mix of servers given there was a large church lady b-day party starting on the patio. Good entertainment though. ENVIRONMENT: Patio was a bit noisy today, but otherwise well set up with couch seating and tables, as well as umbrellas (a must in the hot inland sun), and a view of the mountains. The owners of Portobello's are very kind. I've had the pleasure of working with them for catering needs regarding business meals. My personal visits to their restaurant have been minimal but always great experiences. Food choices seem to be healthier and definitely tasty. I've never had breakfast at Portobello's until yesterday. And I have to say it was the best breakfast I have had this year. I ordered a simple cheese on it and it came with potatoes and baguette toast all cooked perfectly. I'm writing this review the next day and it's 1:17 in the afternoon. And all I can think of is I wish I had another one of those omelets and was at Portobello's eating hummm... I wonder when they stop serving breakfast. Anyway can't wait to get back and partake in more tasty bites. I highly recommend stopping at Portobello's getting a good meal walking distance from all the great shops in old Town and the Maya movie theater is just across the street. read more

Twice on separate occasions our server forgot to put in order. And 90% of the time we are always forgotten about. They basically get your order drop half of it off and will ditch you for the rest of your visit. I always want to give this place the benefit of the doubt but they seems to always fail me. We frequent Portobellos every Friday and have truly enjoyed First Friday Art Walk - a live band, great service, good food and exemplary service between the host/greeter Evan, our fabulous waitress, Vanessa and Max who provided a very nice cocktail, wine and beer. I used to come here frequently during the 2012 fall semester because they served breakfast right after I got out of class and the food was always good, however the service is always below average. These girls that work her seem to have no idea what they are doing when it comes to taking care of their customers. At first I ignored this since I really liked their food, but the fact that they can't be bothered to let customers know they can take a seat, and they will be will ignore you after making eye contact on several occasions during one visit. My last visit I sat down and waited for one of the many waitresses to at least come by and say something to me. I finally approached one at the register, and asked her if they were still serving breakfast since everything was still out. I was informed they weren't and I would have to come to the counter to order my food afterwards she completely ignored me. I walked back to my boyfriend and told him, and we were so fed up with their shoddy treatment that we walked across to Ginos where the owners have given proper training to the wait staff. I also want to say I gave these servers a tip every time I came to eat even if they hadn't earned it, so they have no reason to hold a grudge against me. Final Judgment: Owners take some reasonability and train and supervise your employees. Employees if you dislike your job go get a different one don't inflict your shortcoming on your customers. I will never come back to this place due the employees and how rude they are. read more

I recommend the 222 breakfast with two eggs, your choice of two pancakes or two french toast, and two bacon strips or sausage links. The breakfast burrito is amazing too. Don't forget the "specials" board with cool stuff popping up all the time. If you come, ask to sit in Izzy's area and be wowed by some of the best serving in the area! This was our first time here. They charged for men to get in first of all. We came on a Friday night and a bartender and the bar overcharged us on purpose. She was a very young lady, I'm sure she thought we drank to much which we didn't. And tried to charge us $40 for two simple drinks. We could see clearly on the computer that she charged us for TWO $20 SALADS when the drinks we ordered cost $10 each when we confronted her and asked for a receipt she completely denied it and kept arguing that the computer said $20 when the total at the bottom of the screen clearly said $40 and she said she was unable to print anything until other bartenders got involved.. we finally argued our case that she clearly overcharged us and she finally gave us $20 cash back and said she accidentally overcharged us but still denied she could print a receipt. Horrible service.... not to mention since it moved to the new location, the bathroom situation is horrendous!!!! One line! Men and woman and ONE bathroom for the entire place! We spent half our night in line to use the restroom and the other half arguing with the bartender for overcharging! read more

This is one of my absolute favorite spots in Salinas for lunch - as it seems to be for many other too - you've been warned, lunch time can get busy, but they're usually pretty quick still. My favorite is the portobello mushroom sandwich and I can hardly bring myself to try anything else. They always have a great selection of house-made salads, pasta dishes, etc. to accompany your sandwich and everything I've tried has been tasty. I saw a few reviews complaining about the friendliness, or lack thereof, of the staff, which I found interesting because the staff has always been very friendly to me. They get busy, so don't expect them to sit and chat, but if you're nice to them, they'll be nice to you. I feel like it's maybe a tad more expensive than an average deli lunch, but since everything is homemade and so yummy, I feel that it's well worth it. read more

So I was surprised to see all the reviews bashing their service - that was not the Portobello's I remember. My friend and I went there for dinner last night, and they couldn't have been nicer, and the food couldn't have been better. We stood in line at the food, like I've always done at lunch, and the waitress/hostess/everything else told us to sit down, and she'd bring us menus. By then we'd already decided on our meal, but she still encouraged us to sit down, and we had "table service" for the rest of the evening. It was pretty full for the evening, but I noticed she handled all the tables efficiently and with a smile. Our food came quickly, and was as delicious as I remembered it. I had one of their quiches, and my friend had a tuna melt. We had to have bread pudding for dessert - there's is the best! Don't write off Portobello's because of a few negative reviews. I could see where they might not have as much time for each table at lunch time, since they get so busy, but their hearts (and their food) are still in the right place! read more

I work in Salinas, where there are few good places to eat. I love this place. They have a great menu. I have many favorites including the skirt steak sandwich, the quiche, and the 3 salad combo. My husband loves the tri tip sandwich. They get busy around noon so if you can get there early I suggest it. Outdoor seating is nice if the weather permits. I went to the Friday "night scene" and it was very fun and the food service was good and the dj was playing some good music and they also brought in a live performance. back in my day, the scruffy old men, big rain, and i used to play music here on memorial day or labor day. we kept forgetting which, so it doesn't matter any more. they used to let us play, anyway. my excellent wife likes the variety of salads and vegetarian (ish) selections, superb service, and the wine. she does not like the noisy large crowds after church or on wine tasting extravaganza days, so she doesn't go any more. she does send me to hunt & gather, which the fine folks at zephs/portobello's respond perfectly to. there's a guy there who can pack containers almost as fast as i can point out the dish. he's always nice to me, and it never costs me an arm or a leg, which is good, because i must return home in one piece. i like the clam chowder, tri tip, cookies, pesto, and even some of the veggies. we love the rock star treatment. read more

The woman taking orders at the counter said they didn't have it anymore and that it was just the sandwiches, salads, and soups listed on the menu board.
