Best thing I can say is the food was not terrible. Ordered a steak because I figured it was hard to mess up. It was bland and improperly cooked, the side was tasteless. Delicious lake perch! It exceeded my expectations. The crab cake appetizer was very good also! It's served on a bed of greens which I found impressive. This restaurant is on a golf course (Briar Leaf) and has nice views of the course, which adds to the ambience. A great place for an affordable and above average meal! I couldn't decide if the place is supposed to be casual or sorta upscale. It has facets of both! At dinner, the tables had white cloths, although I could picture the dining room with a more casual look for lunch. Ah, I just looked at the owner's comments- they list it as "casual fine dining". I nailed it! The menu includes a variety of meats, seafood and pasta. There are quite a few appetizers as well. The bar is quaint and nicely decorated. 8/2 Had an early reservation for dinner. We were seated at a table, had our waters poured then we were asked to move to another table because a couple was coming in and they like to sit at that table. (No RESERVED sign on the table) After a bit of the server's explanation and our puzzled WTH faces she then said "It's OK go ahead and sit here we'll seat them somewhere else." She talked personally about the patron and that she is a nurse and quite particular. Just over 90 minutes of appetizers, wine, our main courses, dessert (a to-go order) and while finishing our coffees, we were asked to get up and leave the table because they needed that table for a large party. It was suggested if we wanted to finish, we could go to the bar. Shocked and really put off to say the least we had no desire to finish our coffees and we got up and left. Never in my life have I ever experienced this. RUDE! We will not be going back. [[HIGHLIGHT]]There were many noticeable things, ice and water being poured from a pitcher water and ice falling onto the carpet.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] No fresh bread was brought to the table, a rotten tomato found on a salad and asked for a new one and the snarky comment from the server upon delivery "I hope these are more suitable for you" one ordered clam chowder and showed us the bowl that had no signs of potatoes or chunks of clam and it was rather white and watery. I had overcooked beans and carrots and so much glaze was put over my salmon all I tasted was glaze. I phoned in and spoke to Mary the manager and explained the situation and she stated "yeah I'm aware that was ME" she came up with many excuses and said on a New Year's Eve they tend to have a 90 minute limit. This was a Saturday afternoon at 4:30 and when we left, there were no less than a half dozen available tables that could have been pushed together to accommodate the party. She did give me a snarky question, "What do you want me to do about it?" We won't be going back! There are nicer places I'll visit that are close and credible. I have been going to this restaurant for years at it was always a great experience. Tonight I was very disappointed by the lukewarm to cold prime rib and baked potato. My husband didn't complain about his meal but I could tell it wasn't the best he has had there. The drinks, bread and service were good. For the price I paid I would expect better. Understatedly upscale, with a nogistalic charm that is the way to describe Portofino Grill. While in the area I browsed for a nice place to eat and found this place. I was pretty impressed, yet unsure I had the right location as I was driving in because of the landscape and surroundings. I thought "Is this the right place?", because I was in a residential area? Although the landscape, winding roads were beautiful, especially on a sunny winter's day the website I browsed, had me under the impression this was your typical stand alone restraunt located around downtown LaPorte. In addition to the restarant's location I also did not know that Portofino Grill is in connection to their golfers club for this residential area. Nice!! But with that said, for me these aspects just gives Portofino Grill a perceived sense of exclusivity, with more charm to the restarant's portrail. When I entered I was greeted very warmly, and liked the cozy semi-upscale ambiance. Before I was seated, prior to looking at their menu, I already knew what I wanted to order. One featured entree that I was interested in was their duck. On the menu I happened to see, including their duck entrée was their duck spring mix salad, as well as crab cakes that were appealing. What I liked about their menu opitons was that although their food is more standard American style, as I was reading I noted the parings and preparation of their food. In which they feature semi-upscale takes on convential recipes and dishes. However as of late unfortunately due to the change in supply and availability with Covid, Portofino's menu has been slightly revised, and they no longer offer duck "regularly". Bummer! But luckily that day I visited they had some so I got lucky. So for starters I ordered their crabcakes, with duck salad, and salmon penne pasta as my main course, but being a seafood lover I was especially looking forward to my crab cakes. When my crab cakes came out after my first bite, I wanted to cry. I said to myself "Why! Oh why, oh why"?! I was sad because seafood (especially in the Midwest) is considered a delicacy, and pricier than in other areas in the country. Yet regardless of region when preparing seafood (especailly certain types), must be prepped with the utmost care in techiques as well as their pairings with other foods, and sauces . Not just to be slathered with any sauce etc like you would fries or add any old random accompaniment. But unfortunately this was the case. My crab cakes were topped with a mango like chutney. In theory and for presentaion sake this sounded good, but this paring RUINED, RUINED, RUINED, the crab cakes. Knowing that the absence of the chutney would have given them a 180° in taste. Then as far as my salad unlike the crab, was executed much better. Moist tender duck, delicious housmade dressing, and garlic bread. Delish,delish! Yet what topped that dish for me was suprisingly not the salad as a whole or the duck on the salad....it was Portofino's garlic bread. OMGosh!!! That was not only fantastic garlic bread, I enjoyed it more than my I did my overall salad. This was I think in all my years on the this earth the top three of the best garlic bread's I have ever eaten!!! WOW! I asked my watiress their secret, which I will not share, but it gives this bread a very flavorful and unique taste. Lastly as for my salmon penne, it was "just" good. Not mindblowing but pretty good or decent. I think because it was a tad too mild in seasoning and flavor, but when I added a little salt and pepper the flavor went up a notch. The good points on this dish was the tender, flakey salmon, and creamy smoothness of the sauce. But take note I sustituted the original honey mustard suace served with the dish with alfredo instead. Then pertaining to the weightiness of this dish, the salmon penne was filling enough to satisfy me untill the next day, yet light enough not to weigh me down, feeling full and tired. So overall I enjoyed my meal, but find humor that of everything I ate..... their garlicbread stole the show. For the most part Portofino Grill is a nice place to dine. Great hospitality, cozy envoironment, I just recommned veering from the crab cakes, unless served without the chutney, but either way you should enjoy your visit. read more

Stopped in for drinks. No dinner. Eight or so chairs at the bar and a well-stocked whiskey and bourbon selection. Several varieties of scotch and some good vodka too. Competent bartenders mixing drinks is a plus. Adequate beer selection. read more

Love this place. It's warm and welcoming and just beautiful. I meant the manager who is very sweet. When my son Gabe came in with his boyfriend no judgmental looks were thrown his way and he felt safe. One of the best meals here is the coconut shrimp, even though all the meals here are very good and leave me waddling home with a food baby this one hits the best. I would like to give this place a chefs kiss, and the manager Mary one too. She makes the best desserts and takes pride in her work which is clearly shown. I feel like I'm her family with how she treats her staff and her costumers. If anyone is in the area I would recommend coming here :) read more

Our family has been coming to Portofinos for as long as I can remember (probably at least 15 years). The owner, Mary is very sweet and always very accommodating to our often large groups (we routinely have between 6-15 people with us). Most recently, we had 10 of us go during my family bachelorette party. We were in the back room and had it to ourselves. Everything was great, food, service, and of course the drinks! This was the first visit we discovered how amazing the Lemon martinis are. Definitely a must try! Some of my personal favorite items on the menu are the french onion soup, Cesar salad with bowtie pasta (get it with the steak), chicken carbonara, and the filet. I don't eat fish, but several family members rave about the perch as well. Definitely my favorite restaurant in LaPorte! read more

We were on our way back home from Chicago and we got hungry in the way. I spoted this place on yelp and we were not dissapointed! Their prices ate great for the quantity and quality of food. We ate there and took with us to go 2 more meals. I had the Crepes with chicken and my husband had the Alfredo pasta. I could choose between multiple sides (rice, veggies, patatoes and maybe one more thing i m not sure) i had the side of the veggies they were si tasty and crunchy! The meal cane with a side salad too (could also choose soup Deffinately stop by at this place, it's worth it. It is situated inside a Golf Club, it might be hard to find the entrance at first glimos but i m going to post a picture maybe it will help :) Service, interior, everything nice and cozy. read more

The food is incredible! Where to start? LOVE the different soups - from roasted red pepper tomato bisque to split pea and ham, there is so much variety for the frequent patron. The Prime Rib is to die for. Also love the variety of the entre specials. Specifically the sous vide basil lemon butter halibut. Mouthwatering. The staff is extremely fast, helpful and friendly. Literally the best meal that I have ever had. Ever. Less than one mile away from the Hampton Inn where I stayed, this is a little sample of what I ordered; Appetizer: Italian stuffed mushrooms with goat cheese. Free bread (2 slices of some special kind of white bread and a rye bread with oats sprinkled on crust with some kind of fruit baked in and finally I slathered all of it in butter), and a bowl of incredible French onion soup (see picture comment for more details). 1st Libation: 6 degrees Pinot Noir Entree: Veal Capellini: sautéed veal cutlets served over angel hair pasta with capers and shallots in a white wine butter sauce Final libation(s): Back Roads microbrew dark and creamy stout. We had our 60th Wedding anniversary party in the downstairs part of the restaurant, which was private. We couldn't be more pleased with the venue! Mary the restaurant manager was so helpful guiding us to a florist, musical group, along with explaining our options as to service. We opted for an open bar and allowed our guests to order from the menu. Food came in a timely manner and all guests were delighted with their selections. Excellent beef of all kinds (the prime rib especially), the best liquor and wine selection in La Porte, top notch service, convenient and free off-street parking, all add up to one of the best dining experiences in town. I had a ribeye steak. It was cut a little thin and was a bit grizzled. It came with a single side dish. I had the rice. It was a bit dry. The New England clam chowder was good. The price of the meal was too high for the lack of quality. The service was fine, but the meal was basic. The next day I had a ribeye at a Texas Longhorn and the difference was obvious. read more

It is located on a golf course and I guess I was expecting a little classier atmosphere. the decor really gave it no personality, although it was neat and clean and well kept up. Went here for lunch on a Saturday afternoon. It was at 2:00 pm so I was expecting the lunch rush to be mostly gone. There were only about five tables filled which was less than I expected. Our server was friendly and remained attentive to us. I ordered the patty melt with a side of cole slaw. It was a decent sandwich but it did not stand out in any way. My family has been going here for over 30 years. I'm so glad that this place has stood the test of time. We had my bridal shower here, my sister's wedding... both the restaurant and banquet services are fantastic. Lake Perch, all pasta dishes are great. The soup is always wonderful. But the Amaretto Mousse... OMG there is nothing like it in the entire world. I dream about it. When I come home to visit family, it's the first thing I want. I have traveled all over the Western Hemisphere and have never come across another thing like it. The food is very fresh, and always current with the seasons. Decent prices as well. read more
