This place rocks for catering! I was pleasantly surprised by how well put together the dishes were. Quality- the fresh seafood and pork belly is amazing here. The smoked sturgeon, seasoned jumbo shrimp, and minced pork belly were the top dishes here. Sturgeon isn't as common around here and stood out because of the smoky taste and freshness. I didn't eat at the bait shop but I did eat at D's Meats next door and I unfortunately can't find their page to leave a review. I think the bait shop and D's are affiliated so im going to leave my review here. I don't say this about a lot of places I eat, but these people KNOW what they're doing and they do it WELL!! we ordered 2 sandwiches the egg salad and chicken salad and at first found them a little pricey, but when we received our food it was 4 croissants each PACKED FULL. The picture speaks for itself. They let us sit outside on the bait shop patio because they don't have any space for dine in and we didn't mind at all! They even turned music on for us while we were out there. The girl who helped us was so pleasant and nice. The sandwiches were delicious and sooo full of unique flavor, and the sweet potato salad was absolutely incredible! I can't wait to come back. Soon I'll have to try the bait shop as well! There a few places in Valparaiso to get a fantastic, creative meal. We went to celebrate our anniversary and we were not disappointed. The name and the looks of the place from the outside are deceiving. However, the vibe and the food are wonderful! First off, make reservations. The place is small and I'm not sure if there were any walk-ins because all the tables were full. I had the ono and my wife had the filet. The ono was fantastic - served on a bed of pureed carrots and then cauliflower and Serrano peppers, it was fantastic! The creativity in the ingredients and presentation were noticeable. My wife's filet was outstanding! Cooked to medium rare perfection, you really could have cut it with just a fork. Then to top it off we had the carrot cake for dessert. Keep in mind, it's not inexpensive. However, for a fun or nice evening out it's probably one of three places in the city that serves a trendy, gourmet meal. Enjoy! read more

I can't really say enough about this place. The food and drink are not only of very high quality but are prepared in creative ways. The portion size is very nice as well so you won't leave hungry. They add new dishes from time to time as well so id suggest following their instagram. The staff is friendly and attentive and make you feel welcome. This small place off calumet, or old 49, depending on how you remember Valpo, is a gem. It's really small, so make reservations. The size also means it gets a little loud when it fills up, which it will. The menu is limited, changes weekly, and is delicious. I had a tasty salad and my wife kicked off with a soup she really liked (I can't remember what she had). Then the main course came. I should point out that they have a butcher shop where you can Wagyu steak by the ounce, but it was $24 an ounce. Unless I could actually speak to the Wagyu cow and discuss Japanese Bovine American relations, it was just too steep for that evening. I did get the non-Wagyu filet, and it was cooked to perfection. The potatoes were good too. My bride got the Mahi Mahi, not usually a fish person, and she loved it. We will be going back. I should mention that the service was great. There is Joi Di Vie amongst the staff and it makes The Bait Shop a fun place to go. read more

What a totally fantastic place to eat! A small team (3 people) in a small out of the way location putting out some incredible food. The word is getting out there so no longer possible to "pop" in and snag a table so get a reservation (not online so need to call) and enjoy. One of NWI 's best kept secrets! These meals could only be found in world class cities around the world (this is not an exaggeration). Chef Scott (owner/operator) meals are highly inventive, yet approachable and will generate conversation for hours. Who puts homemade ice cream in the middle of Panko Shrimp (Chef Scott does, and it works). Don't be shy. Each meal is individually thought out, has a story to it, and taste damn good! I grew up in Gary, live in Chicago & have been blessed to have traveled about 1 million miles. I've enjoyed world class dining. Believe me "this Chef is likely the best Chef in the region." Don't take my word for it, check it out! It's worth the trip (again, not an exaggeration or publicity stunt). He's the real deal. Here is one warning: make a reservation. It's a small (yet comfortable) dining room. Don't expect snooty servers wearing bow-ties. You can expect friendly folks who "deservingly" serve proudly. I travel for work and am always on the lookout for a gem like this. I can only imagine how many people drive by this place and don't give it a second thought. I first visited The Bait Shop two months ago when I arrived to the area and have visited many times since. The menu changes almost daily. The owner uses fresh ingredients from local farmers and growers and seasonal pairings. The inside is small but refined. From Foie Gras stuffed French toast to filet mignon to huitlacoche; every creation is a festival in your mouth. I always let the bartender choose my evening cocktail and have never been disappointed. They have high-end spirits and micro brews you cannot find at most places. If you are looking for the perfect place to bring a date or a place to relax and have a great meal I highly recommend not passing this place by. After having had carry out a few times, we finally got to stop in and have dinner in the restaurant and we were so happy we did. Husband and I got two different dinners, both which were delicious. I had the fried chicken which came with greens, mashed potatoes and a waffle and it was some of the best fried chicken I've ever had- and definitely the best waffle I've ever had. The portion was huge so I couldn't finish, but I definitely wanted to! The service was also wonderful, friendly and quick and the kitchen sent us out an amazing surprise fried rice! I wasn't sure what to expect my first time at The Bait Shop, mostly because I couldn't quite figure out how the name fit in. I found out that the building used to be an actual bait shop. My girlfriends and I met up there for dinner and I immediately loved then look and feel of the place. The space is warm, modern, cozy, and intimate. The restaurant is not very big, probably seats around 30 total. We started our evening off with cocktails at the bar. The bartender Josh was a pleasure, fun to speak with and knowledgeable about recommendations. They have a great selection of beer from local breweries as well as a wine list of around 5 whites and 5 reds; all from sustainable vineyards. The menu offerings change every week with selections like duck wings, duck heart tartar, veal brains, and escargot; you don't find offerings like this in the area frequently. We ordered the cheese plate and mussels for starters. Both were exceptional! As a matter of fact the sauce the mussels were served in was so good, after we ran out of bread to soak it up we pulled out our spoons to just scoop it out. My finger may or may not have been used to get the last bit . Yep, I did that at a fine dining establishment, it was that good. For dinner we order braised pork shoulder with gnocchi made in house, Italian antipasto salad, classic burger, duck wings, and lobster bisque. My favorites among those were: 1. Duck wings: they had the perfect crisp and the chipotle buffalo sauce and blueberry blue cheese were on point! 2. Braised Pork shoulder: the pork was tender and had a nice crisp on the outside without being dry. The gnocchi texture was just the way I like. Cooked just right. 3. Italian Antipasto salad: let me just say that I killed this salad. The flavor explosion in my mouth was delightful! I don't like beets and they were throughout the salad. They were delicious and memorable. I've never had beets this good. I'd eat them everyday. The burger was also tasty. The lobster bisque was my least favorite. It just didn't taste like lobster bisque to me. When you order cocktails, beer, and half the menu and only one thing doesn't agree with your taste, the place is tops!
