1.10.26 - I like to pick nice restaurants for the Hub's birthday, and try places we haven't been to, so was excited to go to Portofino. It's not much to look at from the outside - in small strip mall off Fall Creek about 2 miles north of 96th, but the inside is both luxe and comfortably cozy. At just 12 tables, you get your table for the night, so there is no rush and your evening can be as long as you want to make it. They also have a gorgeous little side wine room that you can rent for parties of 6-8 for dinner. And there's a little bar area that seats maybe 4-6. We had reservations for 6pm, so there were only 2 or 3 other tables occupied when we got there, but they filled throughout the night (& we left close to 8pm). Our server Shaunda was delightful, and the owner Dan came around and checked on all the tables a few times as well. We were presented with a cous cous amuse bouche, a nice refreshing bite to start the evening. Hubs had an Italian Old Fashioned and I asked our server to pair wine for me, so it was a Decoy Sauv Blanc with our first course - the mussels. We asked for extra crostinis in order to soak up more of the delicious sauce they came in. Next was the beet arugula salad, so good! For entrees, hubs had the pappardelle bolognaise and got an iced T, and I had the short ribs with risotto, paired with a glass of cab franc. Dessert was coffee (americano) for each of us, and we split the tiramisu (see all my pics). We ate and enjoyed everything! Total with tax was right at 200 before gratuity. So this is more of a splurge place for us, (of course would be less without the beverages we did) but we will be back. Wow. I must start there. Talk about an experience, this place is what 5 stars is. Located in Fishers, in a spot that has been a couple other restaurants prior I wasn't really sure what to expect. Once parked (plenty of parking right outside their door), walking in it is a very intimate, maybe no more than 12 tables or so. We did have reservations, I would suggest making them to be on the safe side since it is so small. As soon as we sat down, our server came right over and explained how the menu is laid out and how the courses are brought out. I will say, this is not a place to go when you are rush. It is meant to be slow, so you can settle in and enjoy your food, enjoy the company and just be in the moment. We were probably there just over 2 hours for just the two of us. Chef Dan came out many times to chat with us and really made us feel welcome. Telling us different stories, walking us through what we were eating, and just made us feel like we were special. While everything was amazing, a few standout things I would like to mention: The Mussels were amazing, such good flavor so if you are fan, make sure you order them. The caesar salad comes disassembled, and the anchovies are sold separately, (I didn't realize it when I ordered it), we ordered a few desserts and they were all amazing. I visited this restaurant for the first time this fall. I've been back two more times. It's now my favorite Italian place. The place is not large( seats about 40) so it's quaint. Great place for a date. The owners and the staff are incredibly friendly. I've tried different appetizers and desserts, all have been yummy. The baked fontina was amazing. While it's an appetizer it could also serve as a dessert. I like the wine I have tried. My favorite dish is the capellini, it's so good I won't try anything else. read more

Absolutely amazing 5 star experience! This place is close to home and seemed like the perfect place to enjoy my husband's birthday. First of all, I love the intimate setting of this place. There were maybe 2-3 other couples dining while we were there and we had a personal card waiting for us on our table. The chef was amazing and kept coming back to check on us and fill us in on his background and the food. Our waiter was also great! I appreciated being able to try several courses to get the full experience. We started with the baked fontina - not only did it look beautiful but it was delicious. Then I had the Quattro formaggio, basically a cheesy fettuccini - I wanted more but saved room for more courses. We went for things we had never tried before for our next course - Osso Bucco and wild boar cacciatore. Omg... from the presentation to the taste, what an excellent meal! Just when you thought things couldn't get better.... I had a Friday evening to myself. I had errands I needed to run, BUT they weren't urgent. So, as my car got to the end of my driveway, I had a decision to make. Left to the errands, or right to "what the hell, why not?" have a bang up dinner by myself. RIGHT TURN IT WAS! Walking into Portofino on a Friday night without a reservation isn't ideal. I knew they had a small bar area and have mentioned that we can stop in without reservations and grab a seat. I've enjoyed Portofino since they opened and their staff has been consistent. What does that say about how a restaurant operates? I was welcomed at the bar by Summer, the co-owner. I did my typical "what are we having tonight?" and went with her unannounced surprises. I mentioned what I DIDN'T want (and that's just because I've had it before and wanted to try something new) and it's like we were in Vulcan mindmeld- she knew exactly what I would enjoy. I wanted a true multi-course experience- enjoying an item from each of the 5 courses with 3 different wine pairings + a pre-dinner cocktail. Let's just say it was a REALLY good night. Starting with the diver scallop appetizer. (Venetian Scallops) Just do it and thank me later. 2nd course- and arugula and roasted beet salad with blue cheese. As soon as it was served, I loaded a forkful of arugula and both the red and golden beets, took a bite and then announced that I hated beets BUT I LOVED THE SALAD. Poor Summer, I think I made her heart skip a beat. Lesson learned- try things and give it a chance. You may be pleasantly surprised. 3rd- an artichoke pasta. (Capellini Carciofi) Full house prepped choke with just the right amount of extras, butter, and cheese. At this point I asked if I should save half since more was coming. They graciously removed it, and boxed it up and held it in the kitchen until the end. 4th- Heaven on a plate. Otherwise known as the braised shortrib on a bed of mushroom risotto. The short rib was fork tender, and delish- complemented by the rich and savory risotto. I actually dreamed of it last night. :) 5th- I've gotten this far, why not? Again, I left the decision to Summer and I have to say it was DELIGHTFUL! What is typically an appetizer offering, I was served a warm, luscious plate of baked Fontina cheese with berry compote. Add a small glass of Port, and you've put a bow on the gift of a great meal. Lest I forget the opening cocktail, can't for the life of me remember the name of it except that Cherry is in the name and M is the start of the 2nd word. This is a repeat for me, haven't found it anywhere else & it's a treat. Portofino is an experience- treat it as such. Do yourself a favor, take a friend, order from each course, share, savor, and enjoy. Having said that, don't EVER hesitate taking yourself on a date and treating yourself. Well worth it. Wrapping up, I wanted to note that as I sat at the bar I was privvy to the dynamic of the staff. They were all EXTREMELY pleasant, happy to be there, and moved mountains for their customers. Actually, some of the requests that I heard made me laugh and wonder WHY on earth would someone order something and then deconstruct it. BUT- the staff made it work. A very intimate space with only a few tables. This isn't a quick dining experience, so enjoy your time there. The bruschetta and risotto were outstanding. Strongly recommend. The Quattro Formagio was honestly disappointing. The pasta and sauce are clearly homemade, but it felt under seasoned. The osso bucco was also way more tough than expected. This place is a really bad "Italian" restaurant. The atmosphere reminded me of a converted strip mall jewelry store. The owner talked and chatted with tables when he should have been in the kitchen. As a personal touch, the owner/dinning room cheerleader personally served an amuse-bouche that tasted like hot cat food. It was truly rancid. One of the worst things a person has ever offered me while pretending it was food. The courses lacked any direction or authenticity. The drinks were very late in service and sugary. The suggested "signature" dishes were lackluster and absent of flavor. Nothing was memorable and the pastas were obviously dried and from a box. NOTHING tasted fresh or unique. We paid a premium price for REALLY bad food! I ordered the Osso Buco and was met with basically a fatty pot roast- It was truly horrible. I tried to enjoy a local favorite with friends, but was met with massive dissatisfaction. I wouldn't tell my worst enemy about this place! It's an enormously overpriced, has poor food quality/flavor, and the service is vacant. This is a place you send people you hate. read more

Dinner at Portofino is not just a good night out but this is a true dining experience. My wife and I came here to celebrate my birthday and it made for such a memorable way to celebrate the occasion. The level of service was second to none and felt like we were treated as long time friends and not like customers. Portofino is an amazing intimate friendly dining atmosphere very idyllic for a date night. We went on our third date and were greeted by friendly staff and promptly sat for an 8pm reservation. I arrived before my date and my server immediately joked with me that if I needed a getaway excuse she had my back :). The drinks are amazing but if you want wine you must buy by the bottle. The food is simply to die for starting with the appetizers, salad, pasta and main meal. Plan to be here for 2 hours as you savor each scrumptious dish. I got sos stuffed I did not have room for desert. The highlight of the dinner was the chef coming out to genuinely greets us and chat with us twice. We talked about how he had been to Gladys night concerts and where I grew up and where he grew up. I mean he was so welcoming. The idea is to order all the courses - which we attempted but failed. I will order dessert next time! I'm already thinking which course I'd trade out for dessert - not an easy thing to do! We had the fried cheese appetizer- which we shared... oh my - the blueberry/raspberry combo with the cheese ... come on! Then I ordered the Caesar salad - it was not what I expected but was several levels above any Caesar salad I've ever had! The presentation - fabulous! The ingredient ratios - spot on! I won't spoil it for you - you must order it! My pasta choice was Paglia E Fieno - the flavor combination of the prosciutto, baby peas and Parmesan was clear & crisp! When the Osso Bucco arrived our server pointed out that knife was placed to get the marrow out- it was like butter on the toasted bread! Incredible! The shank was fall apart tender! Zabagleone Brûlée would have been my dessert choice, just hoping to finish the meal the way I started with the same berry combination?? Fingers crossed! Large sign is lit up at night so you can't miss it. We were there for almost 3 hours. Courses came out leisurely so if you want to be done in 45 minutes, don't go here. 5 course menu but you can pick and choose. Everything was really good. Favorites were the quatro formaggio which was the most flavorful and tender pasta I've ever had, the wild boar cacciatore and the fire roasted chicken. The chicken and mushrooms had this wonderful smokey flavor, it was delicious. The Chef made his way to our table at least 3 times to talk and we learned a little about hard cheese! We got the scallops and bruschetta for appetizers. Both delicious. Especially the scallops. We got the Caesar salad and the Caprese salad. Both great! For the next course we got two risottos, the pesto and the mushroom. And we got two pastas. The Bolognese and the one with prosciutto and peas. The risottos were divine! Highly recommend them. The pastas were lack luster. The noodles were overcooked and under salted. The sauces lacked flavor. For the protein course we got the short rib and risotto, the salmon, and the chicken. All were amazing! For dessert we got the donuts and the tiramisu. The donuts we couldn't even cut through with a fork and were very chewy and dense. The tiramisu was a 6/10. We thoroughly enjoyed our first dining experience at Portofino! Chef Dan greeted us when we arrived for our 5:30 pm reservation. We also enjoyed visits he made to our table throughout the meal to not only check in, but to also share interesting and comical stories -- such a likeable guy! As we perused the menu, we took in the warm ambiance and tasteful décor which were enhanced by the holiday decorations. For our Antipasti course, we shared the Caprese as well as the Baked Fontina. As other yelpers have mentioned, the Baked Fontina is a must try. For our Primi course, we shared the Ragu Blanco and all I can saw is "Wow!" For our Secondi course, we shared the Osso Bucco as well as the Crab and Salmon Roulade, both of which were plated beautifully and tasted so flavorful! We couldn't finish them, but gladly took home our leftovers. Hubby ordered a Cannoli to go because well, that's what he does, and he absolutely loved it! Beautiful place and ran by a wonderful staff. Attentive and engaging. The chef often even comes out to explain dishes and check in (when they aren't too busy in the kitchen). They pace the food well. My wife and I have gone ~10 times and it is literally our favorite restaurant we have ever been to. We haven't had anything come out wrong or disliked a single item. One of our favorite items is the Mussels. The broth is exquisite and they are always cooked to perfection. Very happy to have such a lovely place so close by. This is a very small, intimate restaurant. It has a quiet and romantic ambience. It's reservation only with a course style menu, so it will take up some time. I went for my birthday with a friend and spent about 3 hours there with just two of us. Upon being seated, I was a little worried because we were right beside the kitchen. However, it was SO quiet; I would never have known, if I couldn't see it. The way the dining room is set up, everyone can see it, though. Although, the menu is course style, you don't have to order every course. Our waitress advised that many couples share the antipasti and primi courses, so we did and had the baked fontina and capellini carciofi which were so insanely delicious. The baked fontina is a perfect balance of sweet, creamy, and savory. The cheese isn't overbearing and pairs so well with the semi-sweet berry compote. The almonds add a nice crunch to balance out the soft texture while the basil adds a hint of freshness in between bites. Absolutely delightful -- next time, I will not be sharing lol. The capellini carciofi was so flavorful. It's an angel hair pasta with white whine butter pan sauce but the star of the dish are the tomatoes and artichokes! They added these bright bursts of flavor and tasted so well together. The basil and pine nuts only added to this! The secondi is where things were not so great. We both ordered the crab and salmon roulade (which is what sold us on this restaurant to begin with). The salmon was VERY fishy (for lack of a better word) while the crab was almost pungent. I don't eat crab, too, often so I'm not the best judge for it, but it was definitely not what I was expecting. Next time I'll probably forego this course as I don't prefer to eat meat and there aren't any vegetarian options (for the secondi course, specifically). For the dolci course, I had the tiramisu. A perfect way to end the night. Sweet and bitter, creamy and soft! Heavenly! They have a small cocktail list, as well. I tried the Italian Margarita. It was a little strong, but the blood orange liqueur was yummy. Definitely recommend! Chef Daniel also came out periodically to speak to everyone! He was very charming and funny! Hubs and I have had a hard time deciding where to go for dinner, so we created a dinner box and a dinner duck. We wrote the names of restaurants we love or wanted to try on little pieces of paper and put them in the box or the duck. The box contains everyday spots that don't require reservations, the duck is gets the "fancy" spots. We pulled Portofino from the duck for my birthday this year, made the reservation, and away we went. This restaurant has maybe ten-twelve tables, it's quite intimate. Our server was attentive but not obnoxious about it. We had browsed the menu ahead of time, so we knew what we wanted, which made it a bit easy for us. We had the caprese for the first course, and it was amazing. We shared the caesar salad, also amazing. The third course was pretty much my favorite. We got a risotto and the quattro formaggio, both were really good, but I'm pretty sure I could eat the quattro formaggio every day for the rest of my life. I got the peppercorn crusted filet for my main, Hubs got the wild boar cacciatore. The filet was cooked perfectly and whatever all was on it was amazingly good. Awesome place. The food is very reasonably priced for being Michelin star level. $15-35 for an entree. However, the menu is built in a way to design your own 5 course meal. You can pick as many or as little courses as you like. But be careful, each course is generously portioned. Appetizer, entree, and desert will probably be around $50 all together and another $15 if you want two more courses (around $7/ea). My wife and I each got 5 courses and total 4 drinks. Bill was $180 after tip. That's pretty dang good for all the food and drinks we got.... Service was not rushed at all..... this is a place to sit down and spend 4 hours with friends and family if you want. The Chef also spent time talking with us about the menu, his experience and inspirations. A lot of fun! "Portofino" is going to become really popular. No wonder why it's reservations only! A lot of fun getting that level of service and food for such a good price. There were Lamborghinis and Ferraris there, so clearly people who like Italian products approve of this restaurant! I've been wanting to try Portofino since I first learned about it a year ago, and it managed to live up to the hype. This place is not trying to turn tables, they want you to take your time and enjoy your courses. Easily a 2-hour meal, but I imagine with a group or dessert you could be closer to 2.5 or even 3. It was just two of us and we had 4 of the 5 courses (too full for dessert!) and we were there about an hour and 50 min. It's small, quiet, very relaxed atmosphere. Service was great. Has a cute wine room with a larger table for 8 or 10 people that you can reserve. The experience felt very authentically Italian. I ordered the smoked salmon rosette, served with an herbed cheese, crostini, caramelized onion and dressed arugula. Fantastic flavor; I shared one crostini and ate the rest like a salad. My husband ordered the Cesar salad. Very simple, dressing was delicious and grilled romaine was a nice touch. We ordered two pasta dishes which were two of my favorite pastas I've had anywhere. The ragu is absolute pasta perfection with the addition of cream to the traditional sauce. The paglia e fieno was like a carbonara. It was pretty heavy on the peas which was a huge plus for me. I would happily eat both again tomorrow. My husband finished his meal with the sirloin which was cooked perfectly and I had the mussels from the appetizer section. Sauce was thick, lots of flavor, lots of garlic. I only managed to get a photo of the rosette but I'm anxious to return and try more of the menu, though I can't possibly visit without having that ragu again. read more

Excellent food- the muscles were amazing - the sauce was so good. Our server Amy was excellent. The atmosphere was perfect.

I did have high expectations but this was an incredibly mediocre Italian experience. Nothing tasted very fresh and most of the food was not very well seasoned or prepared. A lot of stuff was bland. Some dishes were way over salted. All the portions were tiny and high priced. We did like the baked fontina and the smoked salmon. The tuna tartar was mediocre. The beet salad was decent but tiny and not enough beets. For primi, we tried 4 different pasta dishes and all were bad. There's no way the pasta was fresh. Two of the four tasted mainly of salt. The risotto was undercooked and watery. The pancetta had no flavor. For secondi we tried the osso bucco and the wild boar ragout. The osso bucco was salty and otherwise unflavorful but greasy. The wild boar ragout tasted like tomato paste and seemed to have no mushrooms at all. The dessert was also bad. The tiramisu was made with clear coffee liqueur instead of espresso which was strange. The Italian donuts had no flavor. The custard with them was very good though. The creme brulee was okay but strange. It was served over cold fruit. The sever was very nice and friendly. I have a new favorite restaurant in Indiana! Chef Dan Stackpoole was already my favorite chef thanks to Madison's St8 Street Bistro in Pendleton and Osteria32 in Muncie. But Chef Dan and business and life Summer Hellis have taken it to another level to open Portofino of Geist. Trust me... make a reservation now and thank me later. So, so good! read more
