I was pleasantly surprised with my first encounter with Potbelly. The ordering steps are a little confusing, but once I let the employee know it was my first time in, she was friendly and helpful. I ordered the sandwich and soup Pick-your-pair. I opted for the veggie melt sandwich and the broccoli cheese soup. Online, this soup is indicated as vegetarian. Sadly, and thankfully, the employee quickly let me know that it contains chicken stock. Not sure why it is described differently online and I had my heart set on it. I went with the Garden Vegetable soup, instead. Walking down the line, another employee was making the sandwich and asked if I wanted other toppings on it. Loved this, because I basically got a salad on bread! Be sure to add their spicy peppers (think Giardiniera, delicious!) Service was quick and we were sitting down quickly with our food. I am in the store along with seven other customers waiting for their orders placed via the app. There are zero customers in line and zero urgency by the staff. Waiting 20 minutes so far. I come here a few times a week and the last month or so the service has fallen off a cliff. Get your act together. What's the point of ordering through the app? Update: now 40 minutes and one customer has their food, fifteen others standing around looking at their phones and not happy. Several customers have walked in, looked at us and walked out. Update 2: I got my order, well half of my order. I went back to the counter to point out the missing part of the order and the young man said I was being rude and refused to fill the rest of the order. I literally just said there was only one sandwich and I ordered two. That's it. This place is always packed and the line moves fairly fast. I grabbed my water and a bag of Zapp's chips while waiting. Placed my order for a Wreak on wheat. The person on the other side of the oven places the condiments on when the food pops out. Pretty amazing since they do all this and prepare take out with only 3 employees. This is one well oiled machine. These guys got it going on! The fella that made my sandwich ran over to get it out of the oven on the other side. This place is always super busy during the lunch rush, but the line moves very fast. Be aware that parking is always a hassle, and you'll be near-missing cars that turn in any random corner. I suggest meditating before spending your lunch hour here. You don't want to catch yourself in "parking" rage. Too many cars in the way! I always order their Farmhouse Salad. It contains just about everything I love in a salad - chicken, egg, bacon, cheese, red onions, and cucumbers. I always go for extra egg and tomato. I normally don't like bleu cheese at all, but I think Potbelly helped me associate this bitter cheese to the rest of the lovely-tasting salad, which in turn, made me love bleu cheese. Goodness, don't you love psychology? The employees here are very nice and energetic. The one downside about this place is how the food is executed. I ordered my salad, and someone a few customers back ordered the same thing, except his was standard and mine was with the extra egg and tomato (this cost extra). I stood by the registers for a long while and a man called out "Farmhouse Salad!" and the man behind me took it. After a few more minutes they called out another Farmhouse Salad, which was handed to me -- This was the standard without my modification because it didn't have extra egg or tomato. Oh well. Not a big deal, but I think if they had a naming system, it be better. A guy just got a salad with extra inclusions without having to pay for it. And this doesn't pertain to Potbelly itself, but they do sell Zapp's BBQ Ranch chips. I always order it with my salad. It's unfortunate that convenience stores don't even sell this particular flavor, but Potbelly, so far, is the only place I know that sells them...unless I contact Zapp's myself and have them ship me a large supply of these! I debated on whether it was worthwhile to review a restaurant that is arguably a chain at this point, but when living close to Potbelly's was a high priority factor in our recent move, I think that answers my question. I literally LOVE everything about this place, from the live music during lunch to the peanut butter and jelly sandwich. We used to go so often that everyone knew us by name. The management even rigged the monthly sandwich drawing so that we would win (hopefully they don't get in trouble for me posting that). Where to begin ... I think my favorite things about this place are the perfectly toasted bread, the hot peppers and the fantastic flavor of the meats. Even the spicy mustard is worth mentioning. If you're a first timer definitely go with either the Italian or the Wreck, but feel free to branch out after your first visit since everything on the menu is great. I like to shake things up every now and then with a smoked ham and my wife is a big fan of the roast beef with mushrooms. Now, if you're the type that doesn't mind consuming 1000+ calories in a few bites, the ice cream sandwich with fresh baked oatmeal chocolate chip cookies is right up your alley. Real legit!) and save your payment information. Online order pickup is separate from the eat in line so you are in and out in a flash! Parking is a little difficult because of the popularity of this chain for lunch, along with nearby lunch spots. I love coming to potbelly Sandwich shop when I am in the mood for chicken salad. I always get the chicken salad on the wheat bread, with provolone cheese and grapes. If it seems like a weird combination, it probably is. But they definitely don't judge me for it. I can't really say I have any complaints, because they are definitely in the price range of the area. I have been wronged by too many foot-longs in my day. And a bad foot long (even when it's only 5 dollars) can do a lot of damage. With disturbing memories of that fat guy, Jared, stuffing himself with a ham and swiss and dried-out, over toasted Quizno's sandwiches racing through my poor head, I vowed to never return to the chain sandwich shop. Then Potbelly comes along. It is likely that I would have never eaten here were it not for Jeremy D's recommend. I mean the guy moved to Valley Ranch just so that he could live next to Potbelly and he buys gift cards there in 100 dollar intervals... for himself. However, my first experience left a lot to be desired with this little sub. There was nothing special about it in my opinion and it seemed to fade in with the rest of the mediocre sludge of sandwich shops dotting the streets of MacArthur. But after some words of advice and encouragement from the Sultan of Sandwich himself, I am happy to report that each of my return visits have been pretty remarkable. These are actually some mighty fine sandwiches. My recent experience was borderline 5 star material even, but I will hold off for now on that last star to ensure that there are no more consistency issues. Here are some pointers that have helped propel this place into greatness in my book: 1. Get a hot sandwich, like "The Wreck" 2. You MUST get the hot peppers. They are not like straight-up jalepenos which can often overpower a decent sandwich. Just trust me. 3. Get extra mayo and seasoning dressing.
