I went in there a couple weeks ago, and while I was ordering I saw one cockroach walk across the area where they cut bread and another walk across their menu. Disgusting! Ordered sandwiches thru the APP for pickup. Ordering process was pretty easy on the app, pick up and accuracy of the order have a little bit of issue: 1. both of the sandwiches were missing hot peppers, mayo and mustard 2. the order was supposed to be placed on the pickup shelf in the store but I think the store was so busy and maybe understaffed the employees didn't have time to put out the ready pickup orders to the shelf. Had to wait a while there's a break before the staff can bring out my order. It was stressful because I had to watch that my car is ok, it was idling outside on an unofficial spot Overall, sandwiches are pretty good and order is easy. The employees definitely need better training here. On more than one occasion, I've seen the employees loudly engaging in horseplay, chasing each other around the place, and having loud personal conversations. Today a black male employee with dreadlocks and wearing glasses got my order wrong TWICE. I politely asked him to remake the sandwich, and somehow he still got it wrong the second time. After the second time, I didn't bother to ask him to remake it because he had a nasty attitude. I also believe he overcharged me. Because my small sandwich, small soup & drink costed $19, which I thought was ridiculous. Also, the place is always filthy and smells awful. This Potbelly location at Ballston is ghetto and sloppy. It's located in rear of the building located at 4250 Fairfax Drive - with a large "Qwest" on the front of the building. Ordered the regular turkey on wheat with cheese and everything, including hot peppers, and a bottle of water. We ate outside, nice and cool out today. Sandwich was excellent! I'd already emailed this store to brag on some employees a year or two ago. My family of four showed up right before closing (by accident...we're not monsters), and the two people working were extremely cool about it. Didn't feel like they were annoyed or that we were being rushed. I worked at a restaurant in college and never handled it that well when people came in close to closing. Living directly across the courtyard from Potbelly, it was my suggestion when our house guest, and friend, Yosi, wanted to treat us to a quick dinner. Type of cuisine: A limited selection of handmade, specialty sandwiches. Salads. Soup, Chili. Chips, a whole pickle. Freshly baked cookie, Dream Bar, Ice Cream Sandwich. Shakes, malts & smoothies. Canned, bottled and fountain drinks. Simple. Ambiance: From the moment you enter Potbelly, a smile immediately forms across your face. Live music plays loudly during the lunch rush, while light, lively and fun music plays overhead at other hours. Floor to ceiling windows give views of the courtyard and extensive patio seating outside; inside, wooden walls and pillars are reminiscent of a 1950s home, complete with porch-style seating under a fading, pale blue painted wooden awning. Colors, detail - like the colorful submarine overhead, where painted industrial-sized pipes meet and extend off into another direction - black & white, hand-drawn and illustrated signage and random, mismatched artwork find their home in Potbelly. Exactly the way Chris likes it. At the register, I could not take my eyes, nor my mind off of the Brownie Chocolate Chip Cookie ($1.15) I saw, individually wrapped and soft to the touch. We got one to share. What I loved: I loved that Chris and I split both sandwiches (which were already cut in half) so that I could sample both! The recommended Chicken & Cheddar sandwich satisfied by way of flavor and package. The creamy ranch with the salty bacon and perfectly moist, grilled chicken melted in my mouth. The Italian, also tasty, was just a big bite of meat. The cookie was a perfect, soft, moist, melt-in-your-mouth, sweet treat to end the meal. A Huge rip-off and an utter failure to deliver. A few years ago my wife and I were in NTC visiting Rockefeller Center and hadn't eaten in a long time and happened to find this Sandwich Shop Potbelly's and it was amazing. So today I ran out of my new job for lunch and took the metro to get down to the local-ish Potbelly's expecting an amazing sandwich. It started going wrong right from the beginning. They didn't have a sign that said order here and when I tried to order, mistakenly from where you ask for toppings the staff was pretty rude. That continued when I actually got to order. The menu in the restaurant does not match the menu on the web site which I had checked before going in. I wanted the clubby sandwich but it wasn't on the menu there, and the nearest thing was a club salad of some type. I told the guy taking my order that I wanted the club sandwich and he said the don't have a "club sandwich". He obviously understood what I was asking for but played dumb until I finally remembered it was called a clubby. When my sandwich went through the cooker the bacon came out a little burnt and I asked if they could fix it and their attitude was take it or leave it. So I took it. I went back to my office to eat and looked at the sandwich and it had 1 small pathetic piece of ham and 2 pieces of burnt bacon. The sandwich was also supposed to have turkey on it but they didn't put any on it. For almost $9 this is really one of the most pathetic sandwiches I have ever seen. I've gone to this location often in the past, but have not been here for a while. I've had good experiences in the past and prices have always been reasonable. This review is about my recent experience at this location on 10/15. I came in for lunch and realized all the food prices had increased, quite a bit. Even being the only one in there ordering food, the process was slow. Once I got back to eat my sandwich, the contents were falling out everywhere (the back of the sandwich had been cut through) and the bottom half of the sandwich wasn't cut through at all. Based on the new prices and this experience, I'm unlikely to return. I have eaten at Potbelly shops occasionally. They are okay for sandwiches once in a while. I like the way they toast the bread. It has a sort of char-grilled taste to it. The downside is there are not a lot of options to customize to make it more healthy. It makes you think of the name itself - potbelly. Yes, that will be you if you eat here often. This is true for all the chains though, so not much they can do about that I suppose... Last time I went to this location (Ballston) I tried the pulled pork and it had a lot of fat, so once I removed the fat my sandwich was mainly just the bread. So, they could improve that aspect. Get to the checkout to pay and am told I cant have the chicken salad sandwich unless I order some "pick a pair" thing to go with it. But the menu clearly showed the Classic sandwiches can be ordered Original, Big, or Half by themselves. The girl said there was no way to ring my half sandwich up. So it just got thrown away cause they had no way to honor what the menu offers and I didnt want a "pick a pair".She also says this issue happens ALL THE TIME. Totally bad experience!!!!! Since I spent a lot of time working for the company, I wasn't too excited about my visit to this store. First of all I LOVE Potbelly, the company itself is why this review gets 3 stars. A lot of co-workers at my new job had only experienced this Potbelly and none of them seemed to excited. The staff was not very excited for a group of Potbelly people. It took a long time to get waited on and another long amount of time to get my salad. :( The managers were not into the customers at all. The new salads are great. They are much more full than they used to be when they were testing them and they have a great fat free vinaigrette that is pretty sweet. Potbelly only serves 11 types of sandwiches on two types of bread. All of the sandwiches are hot and made to order. They have great cookies they bake daily and the new salads are delicious. Potbelly is definitely worth your time. However, the Ballston local is falling behind the rest of the company. read more

Let me preface this review by saying that I love potbelly. The sandwiches (especially turkey, in my opinion) are delicious. Also, going to Potbelly to eat in or take away food is usually a positive experience (friendly staff, vibrant atmosphere, etc.). I am giving this review one star, however, because of uncharacteristically bad (for Potbelly as a whole) service that I received yesterday (8-3-08) at this Fairfax Drive location. The manager (I believe she was the mgr) was extremely rushed, and was actually quite rude (apparently they were in the process of preparing a catering order). I ended up paying for two potato salads that I never received. I wont be returning to this location. Management needs to improve its attitude and customer service skills. I agree with Anna and Jeff (who also reference the staff in their reviews) and hope that this location sorts out it's service issues before it results in damaging the company's reputation. read more

Okay, I am a HUGE fan of Potbelly...in fact, ridiculously so...especially the Fair Oaks location. However, I am not a fan of this one located in Ballston at all which is unfortunate because I live right across from it! Why? 1. They close at 7pm. This I guess is really not their fault as more so is the entire Ballston community fault - every sandwich/lunch time type of shop closes sometime between 3pm-7pm. The one in Fairoaks sometimes opens up til as late as 11pm! 2. We decided to try it out and my boyfriend was excited to get a shake because the weather was perfect...it was out. NO MORE SHAKES?? 3. it's true, they have a very hard time remembering what I order. The lady behind the counter asked me if I wanted provolone on my sandwich at least 3 times...yes, I want a wreck on wheat with provolone..PROVOLONE...PROVOLONE...nottttttt swiss! 4. they just don't have enough manpower here! The girl that finished making my sandwich (also asking what sandwich I got multiple times) handed it to us...but then she had to move onto the next person and yet she was also man-ing the register. We waited a good 5 minutes before she rung our order up...awkwardly standing around..waiting..oh, and while we were waiting a manager just walked right past the register - I thought he was going to see us and ring our order up...nope! 5. Pro is that the cookies were still fresh and soft (the miniature ones and the big ones both were). This is going to sound ULTRA picky and crazy, but I don't care! The mini oatmeal chocolate chip cookies were bigger than I normally like them. I buy them because I want them MINI. I guess it was just that batch, but it was much bigger than any of the mini cookies I usually get at other Potbelly locations. 6. Chips here were $1 a pack...unless they changed all the prices for all Potbelly locations, the Fairfax Corner location has them for $.80. Not that I even eat chips, but I totally noticed the price difference and pointed that out to my boyfriend. Small Potbelly location for huge Arlington rent prices are affecting our chip prices I guess? Overall, the sandwich was still tasty (if it wasn't, I would've died..are they using different meats and breads here too?!) and at least they have outside seating so it was nice..but there are plenty of better sandwich shops around the area that are walking distance from me so Potbelly will not be on my list of go-to sandwich shops in Ballston! Ordered online through their website, and went to the store at the time they said my sandwich would be ready. First, the cashier had trouble finding my order. Then, I had to wait 10 minutes to get my sandwich. I put in the order 30+ minutes prior. I watched entire lines of people order theirs in person, get their sandwiches, pay, and leave before the workers wondered why I was still standing there. While the sandwich may be good, I am not going to waste my time with this store any more. Shame, because I love online ordering systems... due primarily to its efficiency. This place is casual and is clean, but The Husband recommends arriving early if you are going during lunch hour since this location is quite small. Every time we go here I have the same thing, but The Husband is far more courageous about trying new things than I am. It was hard to find at first. It's across from the mtero station behind Cosi. When you see Cosi on Fairfax Dr. take a right and find some meter parking. I had gone out looking for some Chocolate oatmeal cookies for a bet with my manager. Pot Belly's had them and I was able to get a healthy sandwich at the same time. Win-Win situation. I got a little tuna because I am a little tuna. It fit in my stomach with glorified satisfaction. Only issue, they are having a tomato shortage currently so no tomatoes. The one star indicates poor customer service. The food was great, I got a tuna salad & all the ingredients were as promised, fresh. First off, the associates were yelling across the room to one another about their personal business. I went during lunch time & they were pretty packed, & the associate taking the orders was yelling & cursing to other associates. As I'm moving across the line, the associates who were adding toppings to the sandwiches were just as bad. I had to repeat myself three times because they were too busy talking to each other about things that were not professional...at a all. Finally, as I get up to the register to pay, all the associates are hovered in the front with their faces in a phone watching a video. I wanted to walk out that very moment, but I was too hungry & had waited long enough for my sandwich. I was really hoping to like this Potbelly since it's so close to my apt building but unfortunately that is not going to happen. I decided to order a sandwich through their online ordering website. The website is easy to use and my sandwich was ready within their given time window. When I walked into the store it was a little confusing knowing where to go to pick up my order and the person working at the register game me a strange look when I asked about it. As I was waiting I looked around the restaurant and was immediately disgusted. I have NEVER in my life seen a place where people eat so run down and unclean. One of the cabinets was hanging half off the wall, the knobs on the cabinets were filled with dirt and grime and there was dust/ garbage all over the floor. If I had walked to the store prior to ordering there would be NO way I would have ordered. I would have turned right around. Once I got my sandwich I ran out of the store and headed home. Once home I looked over my sandwich It was drenched in mayo, minimal meat, two barely noticeable insanely thin pickles and three barely noticeable hot peppers. The bread was crusty and tasted old. After observing the Italian sandwich I took a few bites of it, one of which produced a carrot chunk. In case you have never eaten an Italian sandwich before carrots don't belong on them. I'm completely shocked at the lack of cleanliness and quality control in this location and highly recommend that someone from corporate visit this store asap. I would not recommend this store to anyone. Edit: I gave them one more star for the extremely fast reply from customer service. After writing this Yelp review yesterday night I also sent them a message via their website. I woke up this morning to a response and a free sub coupon. I had never experienced Potbelly's before moving to Arlington and all I can say is ... ROAST BEEF HEAVEN. Seriously, folks, for the cheapy price, the flavor is outstanding. Throw in the ridiculous shakes and you got yourself one helluva quick sandwich experience that won't leave you feeling unsatisfied.
