My first time at Potbelly! My husband loves this place, so I was excited to finally try it... but honestly, it didn't quite live up to my expectations (and I definitely think I ordered wrong). He got the Italian Toasty Sandwich, and I decided to try a wrap. I saw an ad saying you can make any sandwich into a wrap, so I went with the BLTA and added ranch, cheese, and pickles. Unfortunately, mine turned out to be a sloppy mess. I didn't realize they toast the entire wrap. I was expecting fresh, cold veggies with ranch and just the bacon warm. Potbelly Sandwich Shop and I have a long 10 year history. It all dates back to my days of living in California. It was around 2005 when I mentioned to one of my students that I was soon leaving California for the cold grey wasteland of Michigan. His eyes light up. Curious I asked him what's so special about Michigan? He says "Potbelly Sandwiches" and I laughed it off. He wouldn't let up though, he kept pushing the point. He made quite a bit of fuss about this place. Enough that I kept it stored in my memory bank. Life went on and I moved to Michigan, settling in Fenton Township. During my odyssey in Michigan I finally found my way 45 miles due south in Ann Arbor Michigan. Home of the University of Michigan; GO BLUE! They also had, you guessed it, the Potbelly Sandwich Shop. Instantly I said "WE HAVE TO EAT HERE." The sandwiches were pretty mind blowing. As in the greatest sandwich I've ever had in my life (up to that point). Keep in mind this was 2005, and Potbelly had only recently expanded to Michigan in 2003. They are based out of Chicago and back then they were slowly spreading out. They've since expanded like a house on fire. Maybe in those early years their sandwiches were better? I only say that because I read a Yelp review that stated they would prefer a Firehouse Sub? That's easily the second most absurd statement uttered by a living human being. (For those curious, first place will always belong to U.S. representative Todd Akin) All you need to know is that sandwich in Michigan was MAGICAL. Unicorns, glitter, smoke, flash bangs, balloons raining down, laser show, fireworks kind of magical. SO DARN GOOD. I never went back to Ann Arbor. My next chance at Potbelly was in 2006 inside the Chicago Midway Airport. I saw the shop and ran to get in line. Just like before; MAGICAL. I left Michigan in 2006 and settled in Virginia. I didn't get my Potbelly fix for another 2 years until I traveled northward to Laurel, MD (the shop on Baltimore Avenue). It wasn't as magical as I remembered but it was still excellent. After Maryland I waited an agonizing 5 years before I got my fix again. April 2013 was my most recent Potbelly fix. I was in Chicago for training and ate lunch at this Potbelly location 3 days in a row! Again, not that same magic but still an excellent sandwich. The support for Potbelly is absolutely terrible. I ordered online for delivery and after submitting my order, it changed to pick up. I called the store and told the manager what happened, he told me that was strange since they were getting other delivery orders. And so he told me he would process the refund and told me to order again. I ordered again and the same thing happened, I called and asked if there was a way they could just deliver it since I didn't have a car to pick up, he told me no and he will process the refund. After waiting a couple weeks I didn't see a refund. I submitted a support claim online and they deferred me to the store. So I called the store, the manager remembered me and sounded surprised I didn't get it yet. He claimed to have processed it again, but after a few more weeks still no refund for the two orders that totaled almost $100. So I again contacted support online and nothing. I finally was able to go to the store to talk to the manager in person, the assistant manager was there and gave me the email of upper management and assured me this person would take care of my refund. I emailed them, waited a few weeks, sent a follow up email, still no response and no refund. I sent multiple claims online and no response and no refund. The management at the store level was nice and seemed willing to help, but there has been no action taken and no support by upper management or their online support to help. It's been more than a year and I'm still so shocked at the nonresponse and lack of care to refund a customer because of the company's online ordering error. read more

Ordered a Farmhouse Salad and when you spend more time picking out salad so disgustingly rotten it would make you sick than eating the salad, definitely not a good thing. The lettuce was lot just wilted and old, it was black and clearly rotten. Unfortunately it was buried in the salad (not visible from the top) and I got the salad to go or I would have definitely returned it. They come in three sizes, Original, Big (30% larger) and Skinny, with less meat and cheese on thin cut bread. We ordered a Big Roast Beef with provolone cheese on soft multigrain wheat bread. Sandwich was tasty with a good amount of roast beef. This location has good amount of seating inside with tables in front of the restaurant. Free wife is available, but sit closer to entrance area for a strong connection. Potbelly's has tasty sandwiches and is hands down better than that "S" chain. read more

The experience I just had rubbed me the wrong way... I go to PB often as I live next door to the one in Andersonville. I used to work at PB for years back in my college days (before the chain went national) so I have more than a basic idea of how things work. Although this location is two blocks from my firm, I tend to avoid it. The staff here have a sense of arrogance about them that I think might trickle down from the supervisor staff. This isn't the first time. It was at the end of lunch rush when I arrived, and there was a guy taking pre orders in line. Although he was a bit abrasive in tone, I gave him my order without incident. When I got my sandwich it had none of the extras I asked for - including the type of cheese I asked for. I don't know where the miscommunication was, but I was patient while the line zoomed past me. I mentioned something to the supervisor on duty who was working the cash register, and he shrugged me off like "whatever" without saying anything. I felt like an idiot for letting him know that his team messed up... Although my PB years are FAR behind me, I know that this is not the busiest location so they have no excuse to not be friendly or get orders right. I can't believe I have yet to review my trusty old friend Potbelly! This location in particular can be found in one of Chicago's pedway systems, which means you won't see it on the street - you'll have to enter one of the buildings off the 200 block of N. Michigan, Upper Wacker Dr., or Lake street to find it. There's a trove of other stores and restaurants inside, but this a great spot for a quick, tasty lunch. I usually get the Italian with everything on it or the vegetarian. The hot peppers pack a punch but you can cool that down with an Oreo shake - super yummy! My friend swears by the ice cream sandwich. As far as service, the staff is friendly and efficient especially considering how busy it can get! They have seating inside, but you can also order online and just skip the line to pick up your meal and go. Overall price and portion sizes are pretty good for the standards around Chicago. From Michigan (where I had my first potbelly experience) to Chicago, this is a consistently good franchise. read more

Ordered from this location for my office on Halloween. The online ordering system was a piece of cake. This place charges a $3.50 delivery fee, no matter how big your order is. I love how Potbelly arranges their catering orders: Sandwiches come with lettuce and tomato, and they pack you side containers of mayo, mustard, giardinara, pickles, and onions. No trying to figure out the hellishly-specific orders of your officemates! Our Box O' Sandwiches was 100% accurate, and they even wrote the location of each specific sandwich on the inside of the box. Along with a super cute little Halloween drawing. (Photo attached.) My heart, it melts! They also tossed in a couple bonus cookies. There is nothing better than bonus cookies. Use to eat here weekly (working in the building) and have the chili, soup, toasted bread, and an occasional sandwich which was always prepared very well and the staff were usually very nice to deal with. Good service and when the line would get really long, they would take your order in advance in line with an iPad which in turn would transmit it directly to the sandwich makers before you made it to the ordering section. The salads were always spot on with fresh ingredients and good dressing to go along with it. Adding croutons and other additions usually no charge. Keeps me coming back. read more

Definitely quantity over quality at Potbelly... For $5ish you get a decent sandwich with anything you want on it (This reflects a price increase fairly recently due to the cost of meats and everything else going up--thanks E85)... I like "the Wreck" and Italian... Their sandwiches aren't anything too gourmet (for that go 100 feet over to Hannah's), but for the price are pretty good. Pretty much all of the other sandwich shops in the same building complex are $7-8 for a sandwich minimum. I really really like their breakfast sandwich--the one with egg, cheese, MUSHROOMS, and bacon... and it's $3ish, hard to beat. They try to make money off of selling you all of their sides... It's $1 for a can of coke here for example, the small thing of mediocre potato salad is $1. etc etc.. Then they nickel and dime you wherever you can... when you order chili they ask if you want cheese and onions, but there's no indication given that they're also about to charge you 50 cents for it... (50 cents for chopped onions when it's free on sandwiches??) The line here can be long at pretty much any time, so expect to wait a good 10 or 15 minutes in and out MINIMUM at lunch time... There's a sign that says "8 minutes beyond this point" ...which occasionally is correct and occasionally isn't accurate. I hate how when the line is 30 people long they greet you at the very end of the line and write down your order before you are even close enough to read the menu. It's not as if the menu ever changes, but still I always read it! Maybe that makes me the crazy one, I don't know. It's pretty cheap, especially for these buildings - but I agree with other reviews, it can add up if you don't watch what you're doing. The Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Cookies are TO DIE FOR. The salad had a ton of wilted and brown lettuce. If that isn't enough to turn you away from their salads, the chicken in the salad was not only veiny and extra chewy but also half frozen still like they hadn't warmed it up properly.
