Relaxing with a very fine lager and view at Portlatch Brewing Company!

Despite having a Shelton address when you Google the address for Potlatch Brewing Company it's actually north in Hoodsport. I imagine all the towns along the way aren't incorporated hence the Shelton address so you won't find this brewery close to Shelton's city center or in a very close proximity to the town so that is something to be aware of. It was actually a very pleasant drive to Hoodsport and Potlatch Brewing and realized I haven't been up this way before and I admired the view as I approached the Hoodsport. I had three beers from this brewery, all in which were enjoyable. I had the Lilliwaup Lager to start with and really enjoyed it. It was very refreshing and had a good flavor profile. Love the Helles style flavor! After that I had a buckwheat beer. The past points out from previous experiences with buckwheat and a buckwheat beer that it's a pleasant one for me. And there was no exception to this as I had the Buckwild and Bramble Free. The maltiness was a nice added plus! But I think my favorite out of all three was a saison I bought a bottle of and took home from Potlatch. It was a pear and black tea saison. I love saisons and this version was very good! Love pears and black tea so the combination along with this beer style was a real pleasure to drink with Steve over supper one night! Good brewery and one worth making a stop at if ever in the area!

I drove by for almost a year, not knowing they changed this sign, thinking it was just "off". It's just so hard to see from the road. Prices are steep, like seven dollars a pint? At the brew house source? The chairs are hard and are all pretty high off the ground. I have a messed up upper spine, and the back gets sore after a while. I can almost never afford the place. I think their hot dogs went up in price too. Don't even get me started on the food truck prices I've seen there, lol. But I tell you what, it can be a nice change from the other grungy bars in town. One time a performer was pretending to be very kind to me. He had got me all excited about going up on stage to sing a song with him, and then said I couldn't, and humiliated me in front of everyone. It was super weird. He seemed like such a humble guy at first. What a creep! Needless to say, with the price, chairs and everything, I rarely stop in. And I always make sure it's before any performers arrive if I do. More into their beer garden events and involvement in the community.

We walked in around 3pm on a Saturday and it wasn't busy but the crowd quickly followed behind us! I think what I really loved most about this place was the friendly atmosphere. Several guests in the bar made friendly conversation and recommendations for us. We ended up just having one drink each, the juicy bine and I think the other was called the bent bine. Both were great and would have loved to try another but that will have to wait for another day!

Luckily, Top Rung was at the top of the list. Top Rung is located in an industrial area in a quiet part of town. Food Top Rung had quite a few beers on tap and offered some pizza options that they made behind the bar. I went with the HDR Hazy Sabro-Tooth Tiger IPA. The beer was served in my favorite type of drinking glasses, which are shaped like beer cans. The beer itself was very cold and tasty. 5/5 Service The bar wasn't too busy, but the staff were still friendly and knowledgeable. I only ordered one drink due to time, but still inquired about buying a glass, which they were sadly out of. 4/5 Ambiance The bar has a fire department theme and is decorated as such. They have ample inside and outside seating and even some board games. Very good vibes. 5/5 Top Rung seems like a brewery on the rise. They have all the ingredients to be very successful. If you are in the area, check them out.

My wife and I had been looking forward to trying Hoh River Brewery since we moved to the area a few months ago. The South Sound's brewery game is *weak,* and Hoh seemed promising. So on a rainy day, we loaded up the family and some card games and headed to Tumwater for some beer and good times. We walked in at 2:00 pm on the dot on a Saturday. Literally no one else was patronizing the place at the time. As it happened, neither would we. We were immediately informed that the place is 21 and over only. Look, 21+ establishments are fine. Whether it's for compliance reasons or just because the owners want a spot free from kids for adults to relax in a quiet atmosphere, I get it. I don't think it's a smart business decision if you can avoid it, but I get it. My *problem* isn't with the policy. My problem is their lack of transparency about it. It should be on their website front and center, not under the "when to find us" tab with their hours. They should also, at the *very* least, have a sign on the door like a normal 21+ establishment so you don't even walk in with kids. We didn't see a sign before or after entering, and if there just had been some warning, I wouldn't be writing this. As an example, here is the text from an event on Facebook: "Heads up, Tumwater and Olympia -- we're heading your way! Mark your calendars for 12/10 and join us for our pre-order pick-up event where we bring the best of our bakery to you! Swing by to pick up your order and indulge in a wide selection of refreshing lagers, delightfully smooth sours, and more from our friends at Hoh River Brewery " (This was I believe written by a guest vendor, but just an example of when mentioning age restrictions wouldn't hurt.) Here is from their FB page header: "Craft brewery in Tumwater with Hoh River connections. Combined taproom with a distillery." On their business website, there is no mention of age restrictions until you get to the "when to find us" page. There are plenty of family-friendly breweries/taprooms in the area (we went to Triceratops Brewing after being rejected here), so it isn't weird for us to expect that here. And again, I'd be fine with them being 21+ only IF THEY WERE UP FRONT ABOUT IT SO I DIDN'T DRIVE 20 MINUTES TO GET THERE! This review is a heads up to readers, and a plea to the owners to be more up front about the restrictions on Facebook and their website. It's naive at best and rude and idiotic at worst.
