While visiting family in Olympia, we wanted to check out the local beer. We have kids, so we ran a search on Yelp for family friendly breweries, which didn't turn up many. Luckily, Top Rung was at the top of the list. Top Rung is located in an industrial area in a quiet part of town. Food Top Rung had quite a few beers on tap and offered some pizza options that they made behind the bar. I went with the HDR Hazy Sabro-Tooth Tiger IPA. The beer was served in my favorite type of drinking glasses, which are shaped like beer cans. The beer itself was very cold and tasty. 5/5 Service The bar wasn't too busy, but the staff were still friendly and knowledgeable. I only ordered one drink due to time, but still inquired about buying a glass, which they were sadly out of. 4/5 Ambiance The bar has a fire department theme and is decorated as such. They have ample inside and outside seating and even some board games. Very good vibes. 5/5 Top Rung seems like a brewery on the rise. They have all the ingredients to be very successful. Week 52/52 (in 2021!) in my endeavor to try one new (to me) local spot per week. I DID IT, Y'ALL! 52 spots in 2021! Anyways, I digress. Checked out Top Rung on New Year's Eve and am a huge fan! It's located in the back of an unassuming parking lot, but you can spot it by their white tent that's up. Outdoor, covered seating with fire pits! The inside is really cute. String lights, and lots of fire department themed decor, as this brewery is owned by two friends who happen to be firefighters! Super cool story that everyone should read about on their website. :) Staff was really nice and we got our beers quickly. I went with a hazy (can't remember the name) and it was delicious! They also have bar snacks here, like pretzels with cheese, but not a full menu. Be sure to eat before you come! Dog-friendly and kid-friendly. Full changing table available in the bathroom as well! Top Rung was a fun place to visit. The wooded decor and firefighter themed design made for a cozy space. I met Madeleine, who was working the taps. She gave a nice overview of the beers, and I opted for a flight. For $9, you selected 5 beers that were 4 ounce pours. I lean towards lagers and ales. So, I picked the lager, festbier, pilsner, red amber, and stout. My favorite ended up being the pilsner, which surprised me. It was smooth like a lager, had no bitter after taste, and had a little bit of a honey overtone... very enjoyable! They don't serve food. But, they do have a small binder with local places that do takeout or delivery. You can also order Uber Eats and or bring your own food. Nice and chill brewery in Lacey. I really enjoyed the Lacey Lager and the Newport. Great flavors to enjoy and to relax either inside with their huge TV or outside when the weather is nice. Good service and family friendly. It was considerate of the owners to offer a baby changing area in both restrooms and it was fairly clean. They allow outside food in their establishment. They do have Wicked Pies Pizza served on 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month. Also, every Thursday and Saturday from 4pm-8pm. Didn't get a chance to try the pizza, maybe next time. I like how they decorated the place and how they're patriotic. Definitely coming back to hangout and enjoy more of their craft beers. read more

They are located around the right side of the building, and we saw their tented seating area to know we were headed in the right direction. They had 11 beers on tap during our visit and a feeble appetizers available. Unfortunately they were out of the pretzels, which is what we would have ordered. I ordered STX IPA, which was pretty good but had an aftertaste I didn't care for. My husband had the rye IPA which he said was different but he really liked. This is a fun spot to visit and it's really a hidden gem. Off the beaten path is a this wonderful taproom with a great atmosphere and beautiful setting. The food truck that is frequently parked outside (Thursdays and Fridays) is fantastic and the staff in the truck are very friendly and not pushy. They would stop in and greet people, leaving a menu behind to peruse. The beers at Top Rung are fantastic! I was pleasantly surprised by the Lacey Lager, which is typically a little lighter beer than I usually gravitate towards. It was amazing! With fun fire service names, all of the beers we tried were a big hit. I highly recommend this spot. Food is not served in the tap room, but you can bring your own (or snag some great BBQ from the food truck when they're there). Kids are welcome, too! read more

Sorry Top Rung - time to bring you down a notch. Of all the craft brew in the local area, this is some of the worst I have had. Top Rung is an out of the way brewery located in a business park in a strange part of Lacey. There is nothing nearby and parking was difficult. The place serves no food, but has strange food trucks come by each night and serve whatever's cooking. The night we went it was lousy Cajun food. We got our beers - the blonde came in a strange glass and tasted like the bottom of a keg of Miller from college. The IPA was only slightly better. The place was poorly decorated, too bright, and the music was never at the right volume. Lacey - stop trying to be cool. Just make the drive to Tacoma and Olympia. read more

My husband had his birthday here and we went today to watch the game. This is and will continue to be our favorite spot! Its just so comfy like your chilling at home. Any place where you can hang out, have a bite of food plus a great glass of bear while your kids are having fun playing the board games is a winner for us! There are to many nice hang out spots that allow your children to come with you so I love this place. It will also be our date night getaway spot too. My husband is a firefighter so him and his friends love it here. We only live about 2 mins away which makes it even better for us. #1 favorite part is you can bring in your own food too. My kids are picky so being able to bring food for them is awesome. Me and my husband really love it here and there aren't to many places we both agree on lol ... This is a fantastic local brewery and tap room. I'm thrilled they're within walking or bike riding distance! The beer is excellent, the IPAs are hopped to perfection without using weird varieties that ruin them, the wheat beers are fantastic (even the raspberry wheat, and I'm not usually a fan of fruity beers). The staff is fantastic, too. They have live music sometimes, snacks, and often a food truck outside on busy days. I stopped by yesterday after a bike ride with my son, who took a spill and skinned his elbow. One of the bartenders let me clean him up in the bathroom and even gave me a band-aid for him. This young brewery will soon outgrow their current footprint. We love going for drinks after work and enjoy their IPA selection (disclosure- we typically only drink IPAs and can not vouch for the other types). Long picnic style tables running the width of the pub is great for large groups or just for a community feel while drinking. Beer making on site and sometimes the rich brew aromas fill the air. Patrons live street parking but parking will soon shift to the back parking lot when the City of Lacey puts in bike lanes. There are tons of parking spots in the back. Mel: I go for the beer and company. It's easy to access by bike or walking if in the Hawks Prairie area. Food available by food truck Wednesday through Saturday. This place is cool. I have tried/seen these guys at multiple beerfests around Western Wa. This is the first time I have been to the brewery. I really like the location. It is a huge spot with ton of seating. I will definitely be back here again, though it is a bit out of our way. The Beer: We bought a flight that included an ipa, a stout, a seasonal raspberry wheat, cascadian dark ale, and something else I am blanking on. The beer was amazing from top to bottom. I was really looking forward to this place. My friend and I wanted to go enjoy some beers and was surprised that Lacey had a brewery. First off, the beers here were great. That should be what it's judged on, but w/the recent influx of microbrews and places to consume them, it's hard to not compare standards of the overall experience. It's in the middle of nowhere. When you walk in, you get the standard brewery/tap room essentials: tall ceilings, big barrels and big fermentation tanks. Once you take a closer look the place is a bit odd. They could've taken advantage of their space better. The set-up for the tables didn't feel comfortable. They have huge picnic style tables and it felt more like a cafeteria. There are barcalounger style leather seats that seemed out of place. The lighting, music and vibe clashed with the experience. The food truck outside served expensive slices of pizza that were neither bad nor good. The ambiance was probably the oddest factor. It just seemed like a place where parents went with their children. Not babies; children. It felt more like a local restaurant chain, like red robin/applebees, than a chill spot to enjoy a flight of beers. I'm all for having an inclusive environment, but this one seemed to cater more to those type of customers. Maybe that's what they're going for and I'm not the target demographic for it.
