Communication is essential. When a company doesn't bother to contact you before any work is done, good luck in reaching them after the work is completed. We had been needing to get our air ducts cleaned and had looked far and wide for a reputable company. Every year we get a booklet called the "Best Pick Reports" for our county. This is where I found Potomac Services, and chose them because their prices were competitive and they also did chimney cleanings. I had the "triple play" done which included the air ducts, dryer vents and chimney cleaning. I had to have them come out twice to actually finish the job I paid for. The first time they sent Keith, who called to say he'd be there 30 minutes late but showed up 50 minutes late instead. He was very kind and had good bedside manners. He taped up some vents with blue tape, though he didn't do them all claiming it wasn't necessary. We had some things to get done at home so we left him to do his work. Near the end, we noticed he had missed some return vents and we asked him to do them, which he did. I found this unprofessional but thought it was a simple mistake and didn't think anything of it. Due to his great manners, we gave him a nice tip and he was on his way after we paid the fee. After Keith left, I noticed he had failed to take down the blue tape he had set over the vents in the house. I had to manually do this after he left, and noticed where he failed to tape over the whole vent, lots of debris had come out and scattered on the floor or on our furniture. Upon further inspection, I noticed he didn't even do the dryer vent cleaning. The chimney cleaning was done well which was the only upside of that day's cleaning. I called the company to complain. I had to call 5 times and leave 4 voicemails but no one called me back. Finally, after a few days of calling, someone picked up. I set up another appointment asking them to redo the job, as well as do the dryer vent cleaning. The next time, Orlando and Damian were sent to our house. Damian didn't speak at all, and Orlando barely spoke English. It was very hard to understand him, especially when he called to see if he could come early at 2 pm instead of 3 pm. I had to repeat myself 10 times before it was understood that I could not do 2 pm, only 3 pm. I raced home from work to my dismay they had shown up at 2:30 without notifying me. They completed the tasks I had asked but had done it in a sloppy way. When they left, there was still tape everywhere and they had no blocked off the vents so that dirt didn't come in from them. They also came in an unmarked car. I found this company from the Fairfax "Best Pick Reports" and now I wonder if you can pay to get into this. The customer service was awful, the job was done poorly both times. They have a guarantee but that clearly can't be honored if no one picks up the phone and are virtually unreachable. Will go with another company next time. Unsure why my experience is so vastly different from all the other 4 and 5 star reviews. read more

Casey came out to my house today, right on time. The appointment had been confirmed yesterday as well. Throughout the process he explained what he was doing. He wore booties and took care in my house as if it were his own. He was professional yet personable. I had requested cleaning of the ducts and the dryer. He cleaned all the ducts but explained he couldn't complete the dryer vents because the outside one would require the 40ft ladder. My final cost was discounted to reflect that. I was extremely pleased with the service and will call them again in the recommended 2-4 years. It is not cheap but you get what you pay for. read more

Potomac Services was contacted to preform a chimney inspection and cleaning. When the gentleman arrived, he stated that he did not have a ladder tall enough for our townhouse, and would have to reschedule. After a week of not hearing back, I called to reschedule with them. I am assuming that the person that I spoke with was the owner because no regular employee would have been as rude, condescending, and degrading as this man was, and be able to keep their job. When you are contracted to preform a service, bring the correct equipment. When you are supposed to reschedule an appointment, reschedule it. I'm not exactly sure where the miscommunication came into place, but he was under the assumption that his worker was being told how to do their job, by a woman, and was offended by that. If this is how they treat customers, I am baffled as to how they have any type of rating over a 2.0 here. read more

**PLEASE READ ENTIRE REVIEW TO UNDERSTAND MY RATING** Ok, so look. This isn't an entirely bad company. Is their service better than some momo with a shop vac coming to clean your air vents? Why yes, yes it is. This company does an outstanding job with cleaning your air vents. They cleaned mine out and I saw all the yucky shit come out the vents. HOWEVER... they are destructive to your property so I warn you that if you choose to use a company like this (that brings an entire vacuum truck to suck out your vents) proceed with this cautionary advice. 1) when they removed the vents from the walls, they were very rough. In 3 of our vents, there is substantial dry wall damage. If we weren't planning on having our home re-painted in the next few months, I would be furious. But even so, we still need to now pay our painter a bit extra to secure up the holes next to the air vents. To be fair, the morons who owned the home before us had painted on the vent covers which made extraction a bit more difficult but you can be a bit more suave with your removals. 2) Communication barriers. The people they send to clean the ducts don't speak English very well so you have no idea what's going on and it's extremely difficult to communicate. I don't mind immigrant workers, but I really need to be able to communicate with the people you are sending to my home. If not, have a manager be available by phone when I call your office 3) They saw (as in take an actual saw) these huge holes in your exposed air ducts. The. FUCK. No one told me this when I called and schedule. Yes, they patch up the holes with tape, but even so, did a piss poor job of that, too. I had to have my electrician (who has experience with duct work) re-attach the missing pieces that they sawed up. Again, had I been able to communicate with the workers, or someone at the main office answered the phone, this could have been avoided. I'm so confused why they stuck a large hose to the ducts because I saw what it looked like after they disconnected the hose and there was still a bunch of debris left in the vents. They come back around with another vac to suck up the last pieces. I'm just really, really really annoyed that they did this without it being communicated and worse, the close up of said holes wasn't don't very well 4) The chimney inspection was good. The people they sent were on time and professional albeit I never saw the photos of the inside of the chimney. Do I need to? Not really, who cares, it's just if you're charging me so much and making mention of that's why it costs so much, show me the damn pics 5) Scheduling was very easy and the front office team was nice. No problem. The company accepts credit cards, they showed up on time, and in the end, the vents are super cleaned out and the chimney is inspected and cleaned as well. I would recommend them to people with the above caveat as I know there aren't many hard core duct cleaning companies out there. I've had vents cleaned before by other companies and did a really terrible job and didn't clean much out, there was just less person property damage. Take from this review what you will. read more

First I am going to say that you get what you pay for, and at $450 for Duct and dryer cleaning on my townhome it was well worth the price. He showed up on time after making an appointment today, because of a cancellation . David, the technician, even called with an ETA. He explained everything that he was doing and how they do things different from most companies, and there is a lot. I searched and searched online. They do not use some small vacuum, but a truck with a powerful vacuum! He started at the top floor going from vent to vent blowing the dust loose from each vent so that it could be sucked from the vacuum, and worked his way to the basement. Of course each vent was closed to create a better vacuum within the vent system. The upstairs he couldn't go too deep into the vents because they were tubes that were easy to puncture. These vents shouldn't have too much dust in it anyways. On the main floor and basement he used his snake attachment to go deep into those aluminum vents. Now is the the return vents, in which I took before and after pictures of the 2 return vents, and the main return area. Wholly crap, that was a lot of dust buildup. These vents should have a lot because this is where the air is sucked into the system. Cleaning this art alone was worth the price. I could expect this much, but he showed me where the wasn't a good seal around the filter area and duct tape sealed it. Now unfiltered dirty air will not be going into the system. I was going to replace the filter after the service anyways, but damn it was filthy. He even cleaned up the heater system. Now the dryer vent was all backed up. As soon as he opened the outside vent all kinds of lint came out, and as he snaked it, oh my all kinds of dust and lint flew out. He had to go and put a mask on. I'm probably leaving some stuff out, but I would most def use them again and I'd recommend them to people I know. I used another company in San Diego, and it was half the price, but did half the work. I don't always leave 5 star reviews, but this company deserves it... I just don't see how a company can charge $100 or less. The amount of work, and power used from their truck. Unless those companies plug their systems into your home, or add extra costs. I heard of many scams out there and I believe it... They don't sanitize, but being in healthcare, that is worthless, unless you had mold in your vents, but that is rare. Bacteria is everywhere, it may be sanitized now, but soon enough bacteria will be back. Don't buy into that crap. Dust and debris is all that it needed to get sucked out. Make sure you buy a good filter, but get a mid grade. Even though those good filters are 90 day, replace at 60. I have always done that and David recommended that too. They can filter too good and the filter will actually block air after being filled with dust and make your AC work harder. Plus dirty air will try and force itself around the filter. IF you choose to buy a cheap monthly filter, change it every 2-3 weeks, but definitely don't go over a month. For your health, and to make your AC unit last longer. read more

So, a small burning piece of wood flew out of the fireplace. I thought it was extinguished so I decided to suck it up with the vacuum cleaner since I was cleaning anyway. When I lit my vacuum cleaner on fire from the inside out, I drew a crowd when I threw the smoking/smoldering canister out on my patio. I hid behind my curtains super annoyed, "Jeez, haven't you nosy people seen a vacuum canister on fire before?!" When the crowd dissipated, I thought, "maybe I should get the ol' chimney cleaned." Potomac Services was on their way in a few days. Jarod showed up 1 hour early. I was neither thrilled or annoyed by this, but still thought it was sort of rude. He didn't take his shoes off, just walked his way to the fireplace and prepared the work area while I chatted with my cousin about "Cleanhouse" which was running a marathon of shows that day. He placed a large cloth on the floor, then suddenly turned around to start chatting with us about Australia and Neicy Nash from Cleanhouse. He professed his love for her, and he was instantly my new chimney sweeping friend. At this time,. my husband made a face of annoyance at me and I realized that Jarod was on his shit list, since I'd been watching Cleanhouse the entire day so far. Jarod, eventually remembered that he was there to do his job. He asked me why there was a checkbook, a cell phone box, bank statements and old insurance plans in the fireplace. In short, he was finished in less than 7 minutes, but was there for about 45 minutes. He was clean, didn't leave a mess and liked Cleanhouse. He gets a 5 star rating because of his chatworthiness, and that he was clean and professional while he was actually doing his job. read more

My husband and I just purchased our first home, knowing that it needed a serious internal cleaning (dryer vents, ducts, fireplace....). After finding Potomac Services on Yelp, we called and spoke with Jason who clearly explained his pricing and availability. We were able to schedule an appointment for the following Sunday, so we didn't have to take time off work just to hang around. While it's certainly not cheap to have this work done, we found the pricing comparable to other companies in the area, and since Jason could do it all at once himself, this seemed like the perfect package deal. Everything seems to be in perfect working thus far, and we've had no issues. The 1-star deduction is simply to encourage others to read through the Yelp filtered reviews here. The folks who came out were professional and very nice. I had both an air dict cleaning and a chimney inspection/cleaning. They were on time and patient with my puppy who kept wanting to play with them. The only reason I can't give them 5 stars is when I scheduled it, while they went over the whole process in quite a detailed fashion it was never mentioned that my front door would need to remain open the entire time this was going on (several hours). This wouldn't be an issue but I have a dog so I at the last minute I was trying to hold on to the dog and call friends to see if I could sit with the dog at their home while all of this was going on. It would have been nice to know that upfront so I could have made arrangements beforehand. Otherwise, great job guys! read more

I have no experience with any other dryer-vent-cleaners to which I can compare Potomac, but they did a great job as far as I can tell. Showed up on time, did a clean and efficient job. Would certainly recommend them. Where ddo I begin. - called to schedule an appointment, set it up, day of appt. comes, and no show. - called again a month later. Set up appt. and was told it would be a 5 day job (mid April) - over the next 3 weeks, the old fireplace is removed, a new one is installed, wood trim for exterior around chimney dropped off (4 visits) - during these 3 weeks, waiting on "inspection" (air quotes, because it was never scheduled, nor was a permit ever pulled, no phone calls from the office to tell me anything - 5 weeks in and I call on a Thursday stating that this is a joke. The owner apologizes (wrong fireplace ordered, outside vent cover still waiting to be delivered) and says they'll be out on Monday to finish inside and out and the inspector will be out on Tuesday (both of the next week).... oh, and my bill will be reduced by $500.00 - Monday (day that all will be completed, and no one shows, even though the weather is ideal). - Tuesday they call on the one day that I have gone in to the office in 2 months stating that they need me to sign some papers and vaguely indicating that the inspector is there with them at my home - I say (to the above point) that this is ridiculous and that I am done with this folly. Never do I hear another word from them. - 2 months since the project started and nothing has, nor will it ever be completed by these people. - (mid June) I contact the Loudoun County home inspection office and they state that no inspection was ever scheduled and that another office notes that no permit was ever pulled. Take this for what it is, but I can assure you that it is all true. Pathetic! read more

Casey was sent to my condo to fix my dryer duct, which was disconnected. He was able to strategically diagnose and make the right cuts into the wall/ceiling to minimize the repair damage and find the break in the duct in the wall. Kept the dust to a minimum, and got the job done within 2 hours. I would use them again for any issues that come up with the dryer system. Cleaned dryer vent in a recently purchased house. Casey and partner were great and had to do extra work to get to the outside vent (under the deck) and unclog it. Moved from a home where a 'flyer company' cleaned the duct work and a/c - my animals and myself were hit hard with severe allergic reactions to the mold and other allergins. It forced us to move. But by that point we were so 'sensitive' I decided to spare no cost for proper vent cleaning. I am thoroughly impressed with the job Potomac did. They explained everything they were doing through out the cleaning. They took their time. They did it right. For this type of cleaning they were cheaper than 3 other companies. They are also a set price. They do not come in and say 'oh, you have more than 15 vents so we need to charge more'. The technican was very kind and professional. Even when I can be that nosey customer asking a zillion questions. He had no problem repeating, explaining etc. I highly recommend this company to everyone. Tim came out and while pleasant and appeared to know what he was talking about, the people they sent to do the work were not comparable. Tim is part of the A team, spokesperson, salesman and the workers are part of the B team. They were terrible! We would not use them again based on the workers. When talking with their staff on the phone, they provided excellent guidance on the problem itself and on how to prepare for their service visit. Their pricing was in line with competitors, but I felt that they were the most responsive and knowledgable company I spoke with, and I felt that they made customer service their highest priority. The technician who performed the service called in advance of the appointment time and offered to come early if that worked with our schedule. He arrived exactly when he said he would and was extremely professional, knowledgable and friendly and talked in detail with us about how he would take care of the problem in our vent. We recently moved into a new (but old) house and wanted to get the chimney looked at and cleaned so we could build a fire one of the first nights. Jason scheduled the appointment and called to confirm on New Year's Day that he would be out around 11:30AM the next day. Not only was he right on time (even a few minutes early) he was extremely thorough and answered a host of questions. He provided great tips on maintaining the fireplace, types of paint to use and brushes to use to clean some smoke damage that was on the brick. He also gave us tips on ventilation since it's an old fireplace (i.e. 1930s) and a lot of history on how they were built back in the day. We also have a dog (who likes to bark) and he was completely unfazed by the extra noise. All in all, Potomac Services for chimney inspection/sweep was impeccable - timely, courteous and thorough. We will definitely use them again if needed and highly recommend Jason. read more

Anyone one who is considering using this company for duct cleaning should be aware of the experience I had with them. On May 28th they came to clean my ducts. After the cleaning, the weather was mild for the next few days; by the following weekend I realized that my air conditioner was not working. Upon checking the system, I discovered that the system's air filter was severely clogged with dust. There were also clumps of dust inside the unit. During the cleaning the technician forgot to remove the air filter in the main unit. The clogged filter cut off the air supply to the HVAC compressor, apparently resulting in the compressor being destroyed. Upon notifying the company of the problem, they did nothing to help me. No company representative ever to see the damage or assist me in any way. It was not until July 3rd, after repeated requests, that the company finally sent out two technicians with strict orders to only clean inside the main unit that was filled with dust. Their mistake cost me $1,346 to repair the HVAC system. And I had to hire another duct cleaning company to do the duct cleaning again. I recommend that anyone who decides to use this company, make sure that they watch as the cleaning is done. If a mistake is made, based on my experience, don't expect this company to assist you in any way. You will be on your own. read more

On a Saturday afternoon my fireplace caught fire in the flue. After I put the fire out with an extinguisher. I called Potomac Services and asked if they could come out and inspect for damages. They arrived quickly and inspected and gave me a fair evaluation. Knowing we had to replace our outdated fireplace we relied on their expertise to acquire and install a new gas fireplace.They did so quickly and efficiently. Damien and Riley were terrific! They were so polite to walk me through what they were going to do, how things should look and sound and what my options are for a chimney/damper check. Cell phone pictures showed me what they were talking about at the top of the chimney and they took a few extra minutes to make an adjustment to the damper chain in an effort to cut the draft coming into the house. As my damper is in good working condition, they didn't charge me anything!! Thoughtful, courteous, timely and professional. From one military family to another, we are grateful! I contacted them for gas fireplace repair. I asked if they do gas fireplace repair. They said yes. They came over and cleaned the fireplace and said they fixed the problem, they said. It came on one time, then never again. The came back after several attempts to get them to return. They said they had to order a part. Weeks went by. I tried to email them (they don't answer), left a message, texted the guy. No answers. Missed having my fireplace for almost the entire winter. They finally came with the wrong part, etc. Finally called Shanahan's. They fixed it easily for half the price I paid for the people who did not fix it. read more

The Potomac Service technicians were a breath of fresh air! In the past 3 months we have had a series of contractors in and out of the house. The Potomac Service technicians were the first to extend their curtsey to my young daughter and her schedule. The Potomac Service technicians arrived 30 minutes early which normally would be fantastic but my daughter was still sleeping. They were kind enough to whisper and tiptoe as they checked out the dryer and then waited until the appointment time so that my daughter could finish her nap. The Potomac Service technicians continued with the outstanding service finding a fix for a strange issue that my dryer duct had and they were done very quickly. Best of all is that there is no evidence that they were ever here! I am so pleased with the service I received. I will recommend Potomac Services to anyone and will continue to use them myself for as long as we stay in the area. read more

Potomac Services came out and cleaned the duct work and dryer vent at my home a few months ago. The service technician was on time and courteous, and explained everything he was doing. Did a great job on the duct work. On the dryer vent, however, we ran into some problems. He indicated that the dryer vent inside was "not to code" He removed a considerable amount of lint from the outside (working towards the inside) -- most of which he dumped (and left) squarely on my herb garden. He was, however, unable to reach from the exterior vent outside all the way to the interior dryer stack due the length and configuration of our dryer vent. So at that point, he stopped his work, said he could not guarantee the dryer vent cleaning, and left. Of course, before he left, he first offered to come back and check the vent configuration for an additional cost (except he wouldn't repair the drywall he would destroy in the process). But he never even attempted to clean the dryer vent from the interior (dryer) side. In doing some more research, I discovered that our dryer vent IS within code. So my husband and I spent $25 on materials and about 2 hours and were able to clean the dryer vent ourselves (from the interior). From the inside, we removed a loaf of bread-sized chunk of matted lint from our vent, and our vent now works beautifully. For the amount of money we spent to have the entire cleaning performed, the least this technician could have done was to try to complete the job by working from the inside out (when outside-in didn't work). He could have also not destroyed my herb garden by suggesting that we cover the plants before he shot dryer lint all over it. I don't think that we'll be using a vent cleaning service again now that we know how to do it ourselves -- but regardless, we certainly won't use Potomac Services again. read more

The employee was knowledgeable and conscientious. He removed the old dryer vent, which had many kinks and patches. He determined that a new exit hole was required and cut through the wall appropriately; he sealed the old hole up. The new vent looks good and works fine. read more

Our dryer vent runs up and over the laundry room, over the bathroom and out the front wall of our house. I never felt any air or heard the dryer from there. We opened up the wall at the base of the dryer and it was full of lint, so we knew we needed help. Casey from Potomac Services came out, climbed into the wall, figured it all out and had it fixed inside of an hour. He did need to make a hole in the drywall in the bathroom ceiling, but it was a very neat square, easy to replace and fix. He also cleaned our chimney while he was here. And cleaned up all of the mess made by the work. He just left, and other than the neat hole in the bathroom ceiling, and the working dryer vent you can't tell he was even here. And now my dryer vent is flapping in the breeze from my dryer and I can't tell you how much safer I feel. Potomac Services gets my highest recommendation. They're fast, clean and professional. read more
