Wow, an honest chimney sweep? Yes!!! I asked Charlie for help with an apparently broken dampener. He came out promptly and verified that dampeners were old but functional. We asked him for a price to upgrade them and he gave us a reasonable estimate rather than the pipe dream that some of the other guys were peddling. He promptly ordered the parts and even made a special trip to get everything done on the day after Christmas. On top of all that, he installed the new glass and tried to refuse payment. We received a recommendation for Charlie through NextDoor. We had received a quote of thousands of dollars to repair our defective chimney. So we needed a second opinion. Charlie did an assessment and said that our chimney did not need any repairs or even cleaning. We saved thousands by using a technician who could independently tell us what needed to be done (or not, in our case.) My only regret is that we did not call him sooner. Update: I told him I was leaving next day for a couple of weeks & so was only at the house for new carpet install and chimney cleaning. He left my damper OPEN a bird got in and crapped all over the house and new carpet. This guy is unethical and caused damage due to incompetence. CHARLIE called and left me voicemail telling me to stop 'bashing him' well Charlie stick to one price and do the job you agreed to do. The fact you left my damper open for a bird to fly in crap everywhere and die while I was out of town is unacceptable. I told you I never used it before and to make sure it stayed closed! I have 2 stars because he seemed really nice and fit me in. Yelp states he gives free estimates, I asked him about cleaning/inspecting my chimney and he said $159 without cleaning for a video inspection and $259 flat rate for all. When he came he said oh it's a pre-fan fire place not masonry so it will be cheaper (which I appreciated and was relieved) he then looked up it and said it doesn't need cleaning (again relieved). There was some used debris in fire place but he said to leave it there as a base (I viewed it as needing to be vacuumed out). He then chatted for a few mins I offered a drink thanked him again and he said I'll get you a receipt...I asked what for? And he said the service call $125! We never discussed a service call charge and it's not on the website. I understand he drove over here, but again most contractors give estimates and it's what it said. So I told him to at least vacuum the area!! I mean $125 he didn't charge that to another yelp reviewer? I guess I learnt my lesson with workers in this area. People shouldn't have to pay this $ without being told prior there's a call out charge regardless of service or not. His paperwork he left is attached it states for at least an inspection he is supposed to look at the chimney inside and out. He did not do that. He said for $84 more I could've got the cleaning after he left! He keeps changing the price and I have all the yelp msgs. read more

I've worked with Charlie at Phoenix Chimney twice now at two separate houses and will always be a return customer. He does not try to up-sell you and is 100% honest. The last video inspection he did for me, he installed the three chimney caps I already purchased for free while he was inspecting the exterior of the fireplace. We had our fireplace and wood stove inspected last year and were told we needed to replace the interior bricks of the fireplace. My husband paid $200 and we were told the bricks would be dropped off. We never got them. Every time we try to contact them the voicemail is full and no one answers the phone. The one time we did get in contact with the owner he told us his secretary left during covid and he lost our info but that he would get them to us ASAP. My husband even sent him the picture of our receipt and still nothing was done. It's been over a year since our inspection and we still do not have them. I reached out to Donnie after receiving a quote from another contractor, for over $2200 in chimney work. The company recommended new liners, smoke chamber rehab, crowns, replacement bricks on the outside - the list went on. I decided instead to ask for second opinions. Donnie took the time to call me on Thanksgiving eve, after hours, to respond to my message. He told me that the labor and materials which I was quoted were fair market price, but based on the photos and report I provided him, they likely weren't necessary! He also advised that the brick and mortar work shouldn't be done in the dead of winter, because the materials can't set properly in such cold temperatures. What a concept. His technician came out promptly the following week for a free inspection. He provided a full report and advised that I needed some bricks replaced and a crown, but that I should wait until spring and in the meantime, my fireplace was safe to use. Most importantly, much of the work originally recommended is not necessary at all. Quote: $775 Thank you for your honesty and professionalism. What great customer service. I was remiss in not posting a review after their first work at our house - but I'm glad that I can provide an up-to-date review that highlights their incredible customer service. Like a previous reviewer, we had an issue with the smell of smoke coming from our upstairs fireplace when we lit a fire downstairs, and Phoenix blocked the upstairs chimney in order to properly diagnose the problem at NO CHARGE. It was our decision whether to move forward with what ended up being a not-too-costly repair or leaving the cap in place, since we do not use our upstairs fireplace. Was incredibly impressed with their honesty and professionalism, and we chose to have the repair done (new cap on the upstairs chimney). Fast forward one month....the ice storm earlier this brought down a fair number of limbs from our extremely large pine trees...including one large branch by our chimney. Didn't see any clear damage, but we went to light a fire the weekend before Christmas, only to have VERY strong smoke smell again upstairs. (This after heavy use for the previous month with NO problems.) I called Phoenix first thing Monday morning to get on their schedule to come take a look, with no expectation that we could get it fixed in time for Christmas. Imagine my shock when they offered to come out Christmas Eve! The guys arrived mid-day, quickly diagnosed the problem (the limb had indeed damaged the cap), and replaced the damaged piece quickly and for an incredibly reasonable price. I moved into my place a year ago and had another company inspect and clean the two chimneys in my townhouse. They found some issues that needed repair, but never called me back with estimates for the additional work. My new neighbor recommended Phoenix. The team at Phoenix was great. They arrived right on time for the appointment and laid out drop cloths everywhere. One guy went onto the roof to inspect the caps while another ran a camera up both. They confirmed that I needed to have the liners replaced and were upfront that the work was more complex than they usually do. Charlie at Phoenix recommended another company who specializes in liner replacement. He initially refused any payment for the 30 minute appointment, but I insisted. I would definitely hire them again for my yearly inspection and cleaning. read more

From reading articles and documents online, I was fully convinced that I needed to retrofit a special chimney flue liner for the safety from potential fire. I cannot say enough good things about Phoenix Chimney. We had estimates from other companies for upwards of $7000 worth of work on our chimney and called Phoenix to get another estimate. They used a camera system and showed us we did not need any of the expensive repairs the others tried to sell us. We have been enjoying our perfectly functional fireplace since with a periodic cleaning by these guys. It is unusual in this day and age to find an honest company that won't take advantage of people.
