Honestly, not a fan of the cupcakes. I bought 5 different flavors and none of them tasted good. The cake part was super thick and kinda dry. The vanilla with sprinkles was like chewing into an over done brownie texture. And it was bland. My husband didn't mind the lemon one. But didn't like it enough to finish it. And the marble ones frosting gave a weird aftertaste. Unfortunately, I don't recommend this place for the cupcakes at all. read more

Nice neighborhood bakery - all kinds of freshly baked desserts. I saw pies (milk chocolate pecan pie, pecan pie, pumpkin pie, apple pie, etc), all kinds of cookies, also cakes, cupcakes, etc. We got the red velvet cake ($27) which turned out to be very good. Interesting design of macarons around the side - they didn't taste like macarons though ... maybe melted? They have quite a selection here - great gift ideas to celebrate someone. read more

There's a wall--yes, an actual wall--of lovingly packaged Potomac Sweets cookies that looks like a cookie-themed episode of "Hoarders," but in a good way. This is definitely one of the top bakeries in the DC metro area. They have an incredible selection of cookies, croissants, pastries, pies, cakes, etc. For the packaged cookies my favorite are the Raspberry Linzer cookies, wedding cookies, and biscotti. For pastries, I like the blueberry and cream filled pastry and the apple fritter. The pecan pie and German Dutch Chocolate cake are superb. Many ingredients are from Europe. In the summer they even have amazing ice cream cakes. It is a wonderful, warm atmosphere inside the shop in Kensington. read more

I had a fun brief visit here recently while visiting family in the DC area. The shop is rather cozy and quaint and have a nostalgic old timey (mom and pops) feel versus the bare and crisp vibe that you get from a lot of newer bakeries. I was impressed by the dozens, upon dozens of sweet offerings they were serving up. Everything from pastries and cupcakes to pies in Petit fours, we ended up leaving with kouigan aman croissants, one of my personal favorites, and a cupcake for the kiddo. The kougan aman pastries were delicious, and I would definitely visit again for these. I forgot to mention that they also have donuts and a variety of holiday cookies available. I would easily say that that they offer over 50 different creations at a given time which is wild to believe. The staff was friendly and kept the orders moving. This place doesn't allow for you to linger long. read more

Stumbled upon this pastry shop while driving around the neighborhood. I was immediately excited ! Love to support local shops and I do love desserts! I bought a variety if things because I wanted to tru as much as possible in hopes of loving it and returning for more. We bought: -cupcakes (vanilla and red velvet) -macarons (pistachio, vanilla and chocolate) -lemon shortbread cookies -small cake like pastries (can't remember the name) but we got raspberry, vanilla and chocolate -Cinnamon pull apart buns The good- the small cake like pastries were tasty. Small and sweet. The macarons were also tasty Cupcakes were ok. You can tell they're made from scratch despite the fact that they seemed to have been in the fridge a bit too long. The bad - The shortbread cookies had a rancid (sorry this is the only way I can describe this) smell. We couldn't eat them because that smell was so overpowering. Sticky cinnamon rolls. We were so excited to try these. Except they were rock hard and dry. Overall, our experience wasn't very good. Maybe it was the day we visited ? Or the time? I love this bakery so much! They have an unbelievably huge variety of delicious pastries. While I was waiting in line once I counted, and from my count there were over two hundred different varieties of pastries, cookies, cakes, pies, tarts, breads, cupcakes, macaron, biscotti, nougat, etc! The pastries are very high quality French style patisserie, the filled croissants are some of the best I've had. They make extremely beautiful and surprisingly affordable cakes and tarts, including incredibly yummy looking holiday options you can order ahead. The most surprising thing to me is the price, most pastries are only $3.50, whereas a pastry of the same quality elsewhere in town is almost double that price. They have fast, friendly service. I've tried probably twenty pastries from here, and the two of particular note are the chocolate croissant and pistachio croissant, which is like an almond croissant with pistachio paste inside. The filling is very flavorful, the pastry *extremely* crunchy (I get it toasted), and the sweetness just right. Their chocolate croissant is also by far and away the best I've had anywhere in Rockville, and I've had one from over two dozen gourmet bakeries in the area. They do not offer coffee or espresso drinks, which would be a lovely addition, but they have very limited space, so it's probably not practical. I appreciate they don't serve coffee if they don't think they could serve good coffee. Maybe just a hot water tap with fancy tea bags would be nice though. Very limited parking and floorspace inside the shop, so I recommend going during a less busy time of day. Plenty of parking around the corner. No cafe seating area or restroom, but there's a bench or two out front where you can sit on a nice day. It's a pretty quiet and nice place to sit. I would love if they could put even one tiny table with two chairs out front, but the space is very limited, so it may not be allowed by code. If code allowed, it would actually be cool if they converted the 3-4 parking spots into an outdoor seating area with tables with umbrellas, and did away with the parking there all together. I personally would walk from around the corner, then sit at a table outdoors to enjoy my pastry while it's still hot from the toaster oven. read more

I got a few things, but the Boston cream croissant and the Boston cream donut were just to die for. So many choices, only one stomach. This bakery's predecessor was great, but Potomac Sweets is divine intervention. Currently in this COVID world they are only allowing three customers in at a time. There are so many sweets to peruse. I wanted everything. My first impulse was to buy a box of beignets, but did I really need four? I reminded myself about my one stomach, and stepped away. I bought a scone (I think it was cinnamon bun flavored). It had large chunks of pecans in it. Perfect compliment to my afternoon tea. I also bought a tried and true favorite - almond croissant. I had it for breakfast the next morning while it was not as flaky as some I've bought at other bakeries, it was packed with almond paste. I approve! I'm a kouign aman snob and have to give a 5/5 for the kouign amann here. It's perfectly crispy, well balanced between sweet, savory, and overall scrumptious. It was a touch dry, but def one of the best I've had in the area. I also got the pistachio croissant, but the filling had too much frangipane for my liking as I'm not a fan of almonds. The place has got a run down, family owned small business vibe. It's is so small, just a counter to order and display case with goodies, you're only meant to pick up your order and go off on your merry way. There are a few parking spots right in front. Kudos to Potomac Sweets! For Father's Day I wanted to give my husband his favorite pie -- Strawberry Rhubarb Pie. I simply couldn't find a pastry shop in the DC-Maryland area that sold this pie, and I was getting pretty anxious. I talked to Potomac Sweets about my dilemma. The owner wanted to help, but that pie was not in demand and he doesn't make it. I was disheartened. A couple of days later, the owner from Potomac Sweets called back to say that he found rhubarb in the grocery store, and that he would make it. I couldn't believe it. I visited the shop yesterday to support a local business. A neighbor was there and she suggested that I try the chocolate croissants. I bought a round pre-prepared container of cinnamon buns, chocolate croissants, cheese danish, and some Boston cream style desserts. The cheese danish were delicious but the other pastries were on the dry side. I spent $40 and I left without hearing a " thank you for shopping with us". I would like to suggest a more welcoming vibe for those of us who are choosing not to shop at the Safeway across the street. Delicious pastries, great variety, super friendly staff, this place is such a gem. Stopped in today on a walk and grabbed a coffee, pistachio croissant, and Boston cream pie pastry. My partner in crime reports that the Boston cream pastry and coffee were great. The pistachio croissant was *chef's kiss*. There were so many crunchy pistachios on top and the perfect amount of filling, generous but not overwhelming. Honestly one of the best I've ever had The staff were also so friendly, and the customer in the shop before me was a fellow local who loves the place. Highly recommend supporting this great new addition to the area. I am a sweets fiend and my mom's nickname for me is the "Cookie Monster." I ended up throwing away my cupcake - something I do maybe once a decade. Among the many mouth watering treats they have on display was maybe 15 different types of cupcakes, all of which looked scrumptious. Once I got outside and ready to dig in, I realized the frosting was rock hard. Now if anyone remembers the once-mighty Cake Love chain, you'll know that some frostings, like Italian merengue, have to come to room temperature before they are smooth and creamy. So I let my cupcake sit at room temperature for 30 minutes, and low and behold, the frosting was still hard as a rock. I gave the cupcake a go and it was a mess. The frosting broke off into big clumps, the cake was oily, and nothing tasted like vanilla - kind of important for a vanilla cupcake. These cupcakes don't work for me. On the plus side, I picked up a bag of orange shortbread cookies and those were the bomb. They have at least 10 shortbread varieties and I want to try all of them. My advice: go for anything but the cupcakes. read more

While I stand by my original review that the pastries at this place are amazing (you have not lived till you try their Kouign Amann!), having tried a few of their other offerings since then, I would like to add that their cupcakes are mediocre (the carrot cake was dry and the icing tasted like something you'd get at Giant bakery, no cream cheese used as far as I could tell), and the holiday cookies that come on a platter aren't that great either. In fact, last year I found a small piece of wood(!) in one of the cookies. I emailed the store to let them know and never heard anything back. Also, the person who waited on me the other day was not particularly friendly. Maybe they weren't having a great day, but I went out of my way to be cheerful and was met with a blank look. Didn't feel particularly welcomed (in stark contrast to the JennyCakes folks that used to be in that space). But again, go for the pastries - that is their forte and makes it well-worth the visit! read more

Really disappointing to go into a local bakery and hear the owner berating his employees. I was stunned at how unprofessional, rude and unkind this man was to one of his female employees. He was yelling at her "a 5 year old could do a better job than you!" amongst other terrible things. I told him I would never patronize his bakery ever again for this reason. I hope others think twice before doing so as well. I realize it's a difficult time in this industry and people are stressed. But we shouldn't be too stressed to be kind and professional. The product was terrific and ready at exactly the time I ordered. However, and this is a BIG however, I observed the owner being really rude and mean to his staff--and to a woman delivering flour. Honestly, if he hadn't man-spained to the obviously capable delivery woman, there wouldn't have been a big puddle of flour melting in the rain on the sidewalk. I chatted with another customer in the bakery at the same time, and she said that she swears she'll never return again because of his behavior, but that she succumbs to the excellent baked goods. Delicious! I had a Fruit tart from them and it was so good! I normally don't enjoy fruit or healthy things, but surround it with custard and you have a winner.
