a variety of pastries on display

Two people in the bakery with a line out the door! This bakery is not a hidden secret. The word is out! Abiding by Covid guidelines La Bohemia has great sandwiches and the pastries are authentic! If it wasn't so far from me I would be here a few times a week. That Atlantic sandwich is the real deal!

I went on a Saturday afternoon. No line. I was greeted promptly. After two minutes, a women runs out of the kitchen in a panic because they were out of salmon and ham. I guess that's a very good problem. The sandwiches was very good - ordered the ham and brie and the dry sausage. Cakes are very tasty, and there was enough for two people. The older gentleman serving me was cheerful and helpful, and I felt very safe with everything cleaned and adapted to allow social distancing. Lovely French food and would certainly reccomend it!!

Plenty for 7! Including this for current pricing (Dec 2020).

La Bohemia is one of those local gems that you kinda forget is there because of the location. But I've been a fan of their pastries for years (self proclaimed bakery snob over here), though I don't go often (see first sentence). Last week, I was helping to plan my company's holiday breakfast (just a small group of us). I suggested La Bohemia because their items are tasty, and they are located very close to where I live. And it doesn't hurt to support a local small business! Plus, the traditional bagels, muffins, etc. just wasn't appealing to me. We eat those all the time, but to have french pastries is something special. So I went in on Tuesday morning and placed my order for Friday morning. The gentleman was very patient, but I was a little worried they took my order down on a sticky note, haha. I grabbed a couple pastries on my way out and hoped for the best! Come Friday morning, I call them to ensure they had my order, and they did! Phew! When I stopped in, my order was organized neatly in a large pastry box, but I was nervous I didn't order enough. That, plus pure hunger led me to adding more items to the order. Good thing I did because everything was a success! The savory items were soooo flavorful and tasty. The Cheese Envelope had a soft mild cheese inside. The Kloubasnek (sauce roll/pastry) was my favorite!!! The outer crust was croissant-dough and so flaky and cheesy. Overall, I think the value at La Bohemia can't be beat. The prices are lower than most small bakeries, and it's not like they sacrifice flavors, textures, etc. The croissant dough is soooo flaky and has tons of layers! At $2.25 it's a steal. And the Chocolate Almond croissant....another favorite. The only item I thought was priced high is the Coconut Macaroon (listed as Coconut Rock) for $2.99. It is quite a hefty lil thing, but for what's it's made of, I'd expect a price of $1.95-$2.25, but that's fine. The french baguette is good too. So good that you don't need to slather butter to eat it by itself; but if you did, OMG, even better! Lastly, they don't have signs in front of everything, so it helps to ask what things are. Including my receipt for current pricing.

Apple turnover (meh), Meat triangle (yay!)

I placed a takeout order in the shop during the height of the pandemic. Business seemed to be going well on this rainy Sunday afternoon as 2 others were waiting for their orders. While I waited in line, I noticed the cashier place pastries in a bag, then take a credit card, touch the payment machine then touch other pastries without changing gloves. I was grossed out. I placed my order (5 items) and was not pleased to see my pastries being placed into a bag, then removed from the bag to ring up the order. The same gloved hand then touched the register, money, and moved on to the next person's order. I went home and placed everything in the oven for a while to be safe. The apple turnover was light and flaky but could use more cinammon or other spices. The mini cannelles were only ok. Nothing exciting. The plain croissant was also ok. It had lost its crispy flakiness and was pretty soft. It was raining that day, so maybe the humidity is to blame? The winner of the day was the savory meat pie with beef onion and pumpkin. The pastry was crispy on the outside with ultra flavorful filling. I'll return when I'm less skittish about COVID.

It was slightly busy but the line moved fairly quickly. The restaurant has a good amount of seating and a lot of people dining in were simply enjoying their weekend. Unfortunately I had to work so everything was to go for me. I would love to have the opportunity to just dine in one day. I also want to try their Virginia location since that recently opened as well. I'm also still waiting on their rainbow/chantilly filled croissant because it had to be the best pastry I've ever eaten. Would happily return here. Wish they had a punch card for their regular customers.

The Blackberry Pistachio Croissant was flaky and full of a sweet-tart house made blackberry compote and rich pistachio frangipane. For the hot tea, I got Island Mango just on the description - sweet bits of mango, pineapple, orange, safflower & hibiscus. It was served as decaf. Once I let it cool, it had a citrus taste, but not sweet. I am still glad to have tried it and did not have to wait long for the order. Within a block of leaving the business, while holding the hot cup with one hand (the sleeve only helped a little), some of the hot tea spilled on me suddenly (I now have a burned scar on my knuckle). I don't know if the cover was on right, or if my movements made the top come off. I couldn't blame anyone. I did go back and had them replace the top since the other fell on the ground outside. When they say "hot" tea, they are not lying. Moving forward, no more hot drinks for me.

When we visited the first time it was very busy - on a Wednesday afternoon. No one is working and everyone is out drinking coffee? LOL! All the pastries are in the middle cases, mostly sweet ones on one side and savoy on the other. The price was very reasonable, unless you get the few selective croissants with special ingredients, such as the pistachio one we tried. The highlight is the latte. These days when you go to a cafe they give you a paper cup regardless if you are dining in with no latte art. We got the cute cup with lovely art. This along deserves 4.5 stars. The pastry were just OK if you ask me. You are able to heat it up yourself with the little toaster by the counter, but you feel rushed as there are others standing around waiting to heat up theirs, or want to get water which is right next to the toaster. overall it was a cute little place, I think it was owned by Korean as it give me a very korean cafe vibe.. LOL. If we ever go back to Maryland and stay near by we would re-visit.

Some seatings were comfy (the ones in the back) and the others was a bit hard. Most of the pastries are in the middle with sweet ones on one side and savoys on the other. The price was really reasonable. I saw so many savoy ones I would love to try if I ever visit at BF time. I saw they have Cronut (Croissant and Donut in one). I had had Cronut in Vegas (at the Paris Hotel), but the ones here looked a little different so I wanted to try. Mistake. It was extremely greasy. The oil soaked through the paper plate and I had to squeeze the pieces I cut with napkins to get as much oil out as possible. I would give it a 2 star, it would have been good if not so oily. The egg tarts on the other hand deserved a 5 star. Love it. The latte tasted fine, but it took them a while to make it (almost 10 mins) and served in the normal paper cup, I was hoping for a nice latte art since it took so long. Overall it is a wonderful place to sit around and enjoy some quiet time, just don't get the cronut unless they cut down on the oil...
