Finding a delicious bakery is like finding a hidden gem. They are precious and close to your heart. This weekend, I got to visit La Bohemia Bakery. It has been 9 years since my last review. But, this bakery has only gotten better with age. It looks like a little French bistro with the red brick walls and counters full of breads and baked goods. Service was great. The gentleman who waited on us was very nice. I bought a chocolate croissant. It was rich and buttery filled with delicious layers of chocolate. I also ordered an apple turnover. The crust was melt in your mouth delicious. And, the apple filling was superb. Lastly, I ordered a cannell. It was rich and sweet and so delicious. So, each of my three desserts were amazing. The prices were reasonable. It is tucked back on the right side of the street. You can use Chef Tony's as a reference point. I guarantee I will be going back soon. read more

Finally visited again after 5 years and they're just as incredible as I remember. The staff was so kind and attentive. I snagged the last honey cake slices (my absolute favorite), caneles, pain au chocolat, beef and chicken triangles (puff pastries), and a proper pear tart. Everything was delicious. A higher power drew us here. The bloke at the register was kind, jovial, and welcoming. I unassuming ordered a sandwich. I didn't know my life was about to change. The warm comforting aroma of fresh baked baguette enveloped us in its cozy embrace. We were kindly given 3 canelles free of charge, something that is rare in the hustle bustle of typical cafes. Absolutely awful experience. Left the turkey off my sandwich and didn't refund charge for that. Didn't read the special instructions and put mayo on when explicitly asked for it off. Went back because he forgot one of the sandwiches and I showed him the receipt and he fought me hard and yelled at me that he didn't forget one when it was on my order which one he left off. Best Medovik (honey cake) in the DMV. Runs out fast and only made once a week. Call before you go to make sure they have it. This is a bakery not a coffee shop, don't go expecting gourmet coffee they're a no frills authentic bakery they' not trying to impress you with fancy looking tarts- they push out traditionally made baked goods. read more

Came by on a Sunday and this place was deserted. I picked up a dozen on the mini caneles and some of the regular sized. The mini caneles were good, but the regular sized ones were over cooked. They are supposed to be a little custardy in the middle. This was cooked through. read more

I really wanted to love this place, especially since it's a small business. We ordered a ham and Brie sandwich, almond croissant, and a napoleon. We were going to order coffee but it comes from a keurig machine and felt like skipping today. The ham and Brie sandwich was quite disappointing. The mustard was too much and the bread was stale. We couldn't finish it and thought, wow, how can a sandwich be this messed up? The almond croissant was over baked. It lacked the crispy flakes that a croissant needs. It also was a bit burnt on the bottom. The napolean was probably the best choice of the 3. It was flaky and has just the right amount of custard. It was good. I wish he hadn't tossed a cake into a paper bag. A cake ought to come in a structured container to preserve its shape. I came here after reading all the good reviews. Perhaps the reviews are outdated. Unfortunately, we won't be coming back for a Saturday lunch. read more

The pictures and the hopes of finding a rose among the thorns of neighboring retail space and drab surroundings drew me to this bakery. My first occasion, I was greeted by a lone customer dining at the window table. She said I'd need to shout my presence because the staff were in the back baking. Grateful for the chance to check out the wares in peace, I nodded my thanks to her and silently perused the pastries. What I saw looked ok but perhaps dried out from sitting on the counter uncovered for who knows how long. Nothing looked so inviting, and the staff never emerged. So, I grabbed a meal elsewhere. The second time I visited, a gentleman was waiting on customers. I ordered a sandwich, which was tasty enough, and two pastries. My request for one of the advertised coffee beverages was shot down gruffly with a grunt, and a head shake (a la "no cappuccino for you") but without explanation. I get why people feel like the service is atrocious. They're not wrong, if the charmer who prepared and rang up my food is any indication. The bad service isn't redeemed by the food. read more

I went on a Saturday afternoon. No line. I was greeted promptly. After two minutes, a women runs out of the kitchen in a panic because they were out of salmon and ham. I guess that's a very good problem. The sandwiches was very good - ordered the ham and brie and the dry sausage. Cakes are very tasty, and there was enough for two people. The older gentleman serving me was cheerful and helpful, and I felt very safe with everything cleaned and adapted to allow social distancing. Average pastry accompanied by worse-than-indifferent service. Stopped by around 8am in hopes of fresh treats for a small social event, but as soon as I saw the cases, my heart sank: just a few stragglers here and there. I let the counter person know I'd be asking for several things, and proceeded to begin ordering. As I made my selections they were chucked into one small bag, then another, and after each, the person moved toward the register to get me to finish up. I politely asked when they did their baking, and they silently jerked a thumb toward the back, which I understood to mean "We're working on our delicious creations right now, thank you for asking!" Checkout was abrupt, somewhat messy, and accompanied by a sullen stare when no tip was provided. This would all be all right, ish, if the pastry were exceptional. It isn't. Smaller pieces like the minis feature light, buttery pastry, but larger ones, such as the croissants and larger turnovers, are heavy and bland. No pastry filling is better than average quantity or taste. In all, you'll find a better and friendlier experience at your local big brand grocery. My friend and I went here after seeing how varied the review were. I can confidently confirm that the 1-2-3 star reviews have it right, this is not a place worth your time nor money. There's no transparent pricing here, there are no labels or price tags. This wouldn't be as big of a problem if employees were willing to converse with you- they aren't. Employees are cold and frankly look annoyed around you regardless of your intentions, creating an awkward, isolating, feeling. We got three pastries. One was stale and tasteless. One was burnt. And the other was alright-ish, about the quality you'd get at a grocery store, but not worth the $7-8 it'll cost ya. La Bohemia is one of those local gems that you kinda forget is there because of the location. But I've been a fan of their pastries for years (self proclaimed bakery snob over here), though I don't go often (see first sentence). Last week, I was helping to plan my company's holiday breakfast (just a small group of us). I suggested La Bohemia because their items are tasty, and they are located very close to where I live. And it doesn't hurt to support a local small business! Plus, the traditional bagels, muffins, etc. just wasn't appealing to me. We eat those all the time, but to have french pastries is something special. So I went in on Tuesday morning and placed my order for Friday morning. The gentleman was very patient, but I was a little worried they took my order down on a sticky note, haha. I grabbed a couple pastries on my way out and hoped for the best! Come Friday morning, I call them to ensure they had my order, and they did! Phew! When I stopped in, my order was organized neatly in a large pastry box, but I was nervous I didn't order enough. That, plus pure hunger led me to adding more items to the order. Good thing I did because everything was a success! The savory items were soooo flavorful and tasty. The Cheese Envelope had a soft mild cheese inside. The Kloubasnek (sauce roll/pastry) was my favorite!!! The outer crust was croissant-dough and so flaky and cheesy. Overall, I think the value at La Bohemia can't be beat. The prices are lower than most small bakeries, and it's not like they sacrifice flavors, textures, etc. The croissant dough is soooo flaky and has tons of layers! At $2.25 it's a steal. And the Chocolate Almond croissant....another favorite. The only item I thought was priced high is the Coconut Macaroon (listed as Coconut Rock) for $2.99. It is quite a hefty lil thing, but for what's it's made of, I'd expect a price of $1.95-$2.25, but that's fine. The french baguette is good too. So good that you don't need to slather butter to eat it by itself; but if you did, OMG, even better! Lastly, they don't have signs in front of everything, so it helps to ask what things are. I placed a takeout order in the shop during the height of the pandemic. Business seemed to be going well on this rainy Sunday afternoon as 2 others were waiting for their orders. While I waited in line, I noticed the cashier place pastries in a bag, then take a credit card, touch the payment machine then touch other pastries without changing gloves. I was grossed out. I placed my order (5 items) and was not pleased to see my pastries being placed into a bag, then removed from the bag to ring up the order. The same gloved hand then touched the register, money, and moved on to the next person's order. I went home and placed everything in the oven for a while to be safe. The apple turnover was light and flaky but could use more cinammon or other spices. The mini cannelles were only ok. Nothing exciting. The plain croissant was also ok. It had lost its crispy flakiness and was pretty soft. It was raining that day, so maybe the humidity is to blame? The winner of the day was the savory meat pie with beef onion and pumpkin. The pastry was crispy on the outside with ultra flavorful filling. I'll return when I'm less skittish about COVID. read more

This little haven of pastries is nestled in an industrial area and knocking out some amazing baked goods. The epi baguette was crisp and chewy. The sausage in the kolache is unique and aromatic. There is perhaps no other bakery in the area which offers such superior European baked goods at budget prices. Their plain croissant sells for $1.95. It's delicate and flaky and merveilleux. No other vendor that I know of can come close to this quality AND low price point--and I've been buying croissants for over 25 years in the DMV. I've never been to their bakery store in Rockville actually, but am a regular customer at the Montgomery Farm Women's Cooperative in Bethesda. La Bohemia has a prime spot inside the Farm Women's Cooperative building, located on Wisconsin Avenue, and usually has a varied selection of items for sale. But don't arrive too late in the day or you may be disappointed at what is not available.The Farm Women's Cooperative is open 3 days a week, from 8 to 4. From savory to sweet, you cannot go wrong with La Bohemia Bakery. I love their baguettes and Miche breads, both of which have excellent texture and flavor. No one can beat their Honey Cake and Almond Cakes, you can taste the love and care they put into each of the several layers and in their custom cream fillings. Service is prompt and courteous - the staff and owners are all highly-personable and attentive to their customers. The shop itself is cute as well! I almost forgot to mention they have great sandwiches as well, with some pretty awesome deals! Definitely worth checking this bakery out! Wow. Where do I begin? My mom and I just finished lunch this afternoon and saw this place has great reviews and headed over. We entered and a gentleman came from the back and just put on gloves, didn't greet us. We said hello and asked about a couple of items. To which he seemed annoyed/incoherent; couldn't quite tell which one. My mom said she would take one of the items in the right hand case, but we still hadn't gotten a clear answer on what that item was. He had to pry the cake looking item from the other pieces and the parchment it was on. So it looked super stale. (Spoiler alert: it was stale) also we never got a clear answer on what it was? I asked for a mini canelé and he just said yea and didn't put the canelé with the order. At that point I was so off put and had lost my interest in buying anything from the place. I really wanted to try a variety of some mini pastries, but when I asked about them (because they appeared out of order from their labels) I was met with blank stares and silence or an incoherent response. My mom still purchased her item. It was stale, and the attitude of the worker put it over the edge which made it a bad experience. I'd love to give it another try but I'm so confused by and disinterested in the service that I don't know that I'd give it another go. Disappointing. read more

The triangle pie with meat and pumpkin was truly 5 star snack. I had some great Uzbek food with pumpkins but this was better. I did not care if pumpkins season is Fall or not. Sweets were very good. You can tell they come from a small batch. The honey-cake was good but I wished they had more Czech cakes. I had my hope for Pavlova but they only do special orders on Pavlova. Everything was SO DELICIOUS! We came by on a Monday at 12:30pm. They had lots of canelés left, but what remained of the non-plain croissants were crumbs (after we were finished oops!). The honey cake was very dense and rich, and the honey flavour was fantastic. We ate this along with a couple of lattes for a quick snack. Canelés weren't too sweet, and nice and chewy. I took the chocolate croissants home and after a quick toast in the oven, they were amazing - so flaky and the chocolate was all gooey. They also had fruit pies which looked really good, although we didn't try. The woman (owner?) was super friendly as well! I still love their baked goods but unfortunately the service has become very slow. I'm not sure what's going on but they are usually in the back not in the front, I would have to shout to make myself known after standing in the front for 5 mins without anyone coming out. I visited the actual bakery plus have seen this one at a farmers market. I prefer them at the farmers market than their actual store. When I visited, it seemed a little disorderly and flies were all over the pastries. It took longer than expected just to order a few items; the staff seemed all over the place. I also noticed for some odd reason the sweets tasted substantially better at the farmers market probably because they were freshly made for the event. I don't know how long the sweets were sitting out in person. But, my favorite pastry by far is their Apricot Tart; that is something special (though again, big freshness difference compared to when I had at shop versus at farmers market). My family enjoys their chocolate almond croissants, but I am a strict fan for that apricot wonder. I've tried their chocolate almond croissant and a few other items, but I'm just into their apricot. Try everything! I recommend the "Heaven cake" with a thick layer of blueberry and cream in the middle just perfectly sweet! Nothing you eat here will make you feel heavy. This little bakery have very limited menu which means you're eating fresh backed goodies every time you visit here. This little gem was difficult to find, hidden way back in an industrial area. The lady who served us had some trouble with the coffee machine, she was so apologetic she offered us almost $10 worth of baked goodies till she got our coffee. This bakery is the epitome of Hidden Gems. It is in a commercial cul-de-sac off a back street off a side street, and even managed to confuse Waze. Now, I have to disclose that I have had a better baguette. It was in France, and my timing was lucky enough that it had just completed its legally required 20 minute rest after leaving the oven. So if I ever have a better one than that it will be delivered by a cherub as I recline upon a cloud between harp lessons. That being said, Las Bohemia's baguette was totally legit, the latte was very good and half the price of *$$, and the croissant was beautifully flaky. Where shall I start? I know a Court is described as a short street that ends as a cul-de-sac, but it is still a street. This nice bakery is located on Wilkins Court, but it is not a street per say, but more of a driveway lot (that is the best way I can describe it). This lot is located next to an Animal Hospital. Now, there is a sign at the bottom of this lot that does say Wilkins Court, but if you notice (and you may not), that street sign is so low as in height, it seems like the person who put it up didn't really want to, knowing that it was not really on a street. With that said, you should never get lost anymore in trying to find this place. I came across this place partaking in a challenge and I am so glad I did. It is a quaint little shop located among what looks like mechanic shops, a cosmetic shop, and some other mini businesses, that if you don't see their sign hanging from the building, you will never know that they are located there. I had read a few reviews before arriving, to get an idea on what to order and so on the day I went, they had one Honey Cake left. I was told by one of the ladies there that it has several layers and that each is made separately. It was hard to cut when I got it the first time, but it was so delicious. I wanted to try so many other items in their store that I got probably it little more than I had anticipated in purchasing. I got a Mini Cannelé (this was very hard so I could only eat a tiny piece - the lady there said it is made that way - hard, but I have had it at two other bakeries before and it was never that hard), Almond Chocolate Croissant (very tasty and the chocolate inside was not too much), Coconut Rock Macaroon (hard to break, but I could taste the coconut and loved this pastry) and a Mini Chocolate Croissant (very good and the chocolate is very light on the inside). I got to taste the La Bohemia Cake that my friend got - it is described as a Meringue Cake with Cashew nuts and it was very good and yummy (we tried to cut it in half - it was difficult but not impossible). I also got a sandwich as well called Paname - butter, ham, brie cheese and mustard. I got it without the mustard and the brie cheese pieces are big. It is served on a big french roll (I am guessing that it is french) and it is not toasted - they said they didn't toast it so as not to compromise the items on it. I enjoyed some of the items on my first visit there and went back a few days later and made some more purchases - the Honey Cake was calling my name and I couldn't resist. I am sure I will visit them again and try something new, but it is nice to know they are there. Parking can be tricky, but depending on the time you go, you may or may not find a space in their lot (so far I have had luck). I do see there is street parking (metered and it is 2 hours from 7am to 7pm). read more

If you in Rockville, MD don't forget to visit La Bohemia Bakery. They have a great coffee, bread, cake etc. I mean, they have pretty much everything related to any top cafeteria. My visit was good, the place was clean, coffee tasted good, the tartar was perfect, the only thing I didn't like it much, was the cashier actitud, she seems little off, like forced to be or stand there. (Here's my tip. Come on, it's a customer service, be happy, greet customers, show them your business, your most selling items, give them your recommendations, put your store name into the game people can remember and come back.) Sad to say this place has gone way downhill. Prices are not posted and we were shocked to see that 3 small pastries added up to $17. Two pastries were $7 each!! Very little variety- even getting my there around 10 am I would think there were be some items left but it was scarce. It made me wonder if they were even made this morning. The man only comes out to the front (from the back room) when he hears someone come in the door. Very little description when we asked what things were because there were labels. No baguettes- they said they weren't ready yet- who knows how long one would need to wait. This place needs a sign out front that isn't faded to the point that it can no longer be read anymore and they need better customer service in addition to just all around better pastries and prices. It's so disappointing because we used to love this hidden gem and they even catered the desserts at my wedding but I don't think I will be back again. read more

Au revoir Saint Michel, and a huge bienvenu to La Bohemia Bakery! Although many of their offerings are traditionally French, the new owners are from the Czech Republic and add a personal touch by offering a muti-layered Honey Cake. So sad they were sold out when I got here at noon on a Saturday. As were most of their pastries. I bought a plain croissant, and when the guy said the chocolate and almond ones were in the oven, I almost drooled. Oui oui, I want those too! I raced to Harris Teeter and did my after vacation grocery shopping, and raced back. Can you believe they were almost sold out again? However, I was one lucky lady. When one can't decide what to get the only option is to buy it all! I bought a chocolate croissant and an almond croissant. The nice lady threw in a Canelés de Bordeaux for me to try. Each item was délicieux! I think a tear just fell from my eye. Canelés, where have you been all my life?! These little fluted cakes have a tender custardy center with a glassy, caramelized crusty shell. I've read about the ones the owner of Dominique Ansel Bakery (home of the Cronut) in New York makes, and now here they are in Rockville, Maryland in a fabulous new bakery on a nondescript street. Bestest part: They are $1.10 or $0.55 depending on your indulgence. Buy six, or better yet, a dozen. They are unique. The new owners have remodeled, but while bringing back the French pastries we knew and loved from Saint Michel's incarnation, la Bohemia has made a name for itself. One that you will remember. I've visited the bakery twice--once on a weekday morning shortly after 7 AM and once on a Saturday morning around 9:30 AM. The bakery is tucked away near an animal hospital and a few other small shops. Both times I visited, I had no trouble finding parking in the shared parking lot. The 1st time I visited, I specifically came to buy a baguette to use later for lunch. The baguettes were still being baked when I arrived. The very nice employee let me know they would be out in about 10 minutes, but I'm pretty sure I waited less than that before he handed me a warm, freshly-baked baguette. In addition to the baguette, I got a free mini cannelé from checking in on Yelp. The baguette was wonderful, with a great texture and flavor. I was able to use it for 2 meals. The mini cannelé was scrumptious; I'd definitely get it again. The 2nd time I stopped by, there were still a good amount of baguettes and pastries still in stock, but they appeared to be out of the honey cake. I got the envelope du fromage (a cheese-filled pastry) and a bread pudding. Both were well-made; I would recommend heating them up if you take them to go. Other pastries available included croissants, chocolate moelleux, and quiches. Both times I went the shop wasn't too busy, but I was there fairly early in the day. The store is really cozy inside and the employee who was manning the cash register both times I was there was friendly. The items were fairly priced. Let's start with how to find this place. If you see Amalfi's restaurant it is on the side street next to it. Small bakery on a side plaza strip in a more industrial area off Parklawn. This place is fabulous and now open Sundays. Get the cappuccino! It is the best I have ever had- I mean ever. So perfectly balanced. It sets the tone for the pastry feasting to follow. Order it first bc it takes a while for them to make it. Great cafe style atmosphere: small, quaint, friendly and great quality. Don't forget to check in for a free canelli. I've been here a few times and quality is consistent - wish it wasn't so out of the way. Can't go wrong. Tried an assortment and want to go back for one of their quiche (and of course a cappuccino and pastries). Canneli was nicely chewy and flavorful, chad something they called a snowflake and a pastry puff. Recommend all of them. Have had the honey cake but they were out this trip- the apple pastries also.
