That said, a few things set this spot apart: - menu variation- not all the same stuff you at every Mexican spot. Very similar, but not the same. - service may even be faster than other comparable spots, which is noteworthy. - food quality is certainly better than comparable spots. We were driving down the road and saw a shopping center so we decided to pull in and see what they had. There was a Publix so the shopping center was a little nicer. There was a Mexican restaurant a few stores down, so we decided to give it a try. We love Mexican, but we did not love this place. It's the worst Mexican I've ever eaten in my entire life. I asked if they had horchata and the lady looked confused and said they only had Pepsi products. Okay. I ordered the chimichanga with beef tips and a chili relleno with cheese. The chili relleno wasn't cooked long enough because the cheese wasn't melted. That was the best thing I ate. And it was just okay. The beef in the chimichanga was awful. So gross. It was red and I bit into something hard. Like a bone maybe. Idk. I spit it out and didnt eat anymore more. The beans were gross too, as well as the rice. Hubby got a beef quesadilla and when he opened it, it had the same nasty looking red meat but there were like four pieces of it. Most of it was the nasty refried beans. I question the reviews of anyone who gave this place four or five stars. Don't come here. It's terrible. We were also the only people here at lunch time, so obviously other people don't like it either. It was clean, so that's nice but the food sucks. read more

It's pretty standard Mexican-American fare, as food goes. They get some bonus points from things like the tacos never being soggy (when ordered for dine-in) and the white sauce being absolutely delicious. Staff is friendly and the place is clean. The restaurant is very accessible for those who need accommodation, including for larger people. The food is overall good. Not overly remarkable, but it gets the job done if you want a decent burrito, enchilada, or taco. I think they've gotten a little stingy with the guac and sour cream "salad" they include with their dishes. They've gone down to maybe a little under a tablespoon of sour cream and usually don't include any guac anymore. They've also cut down on the amount of sauteed veg and cheese in the quesadillas, which means it's basically some seasoned meat, a few sauteed onions, and that's it. I would strongly caution you to check your order if you order takeout. There seems to be some major issues in that area, as any time we've ordered takeout, there are numerous missing items or incorrect orders. read more

Probs my least favorite Mexican I've had so far in all of RVA. There isn't any significantly wrong with it, but I would never choose to eat here, especially with Potros only a mile away up the street. They said their arroz con pollo was a speciality of theirs so I ordered it to go. Super disappointed in the lack of rice they put, I've never gotten such a little amount of rice for arroz con pollo. There was plenty of pale, underseasoned, unappealing looking chicken however. Barely any cheese dip on top either. Just a bunch of chicken really. The Refried beans were pretty standard but soupy which I didn't like. The chorizo cheese dip was super good if I ever came here I'd just order that probs! read more

This is your typical Americanized Mexican food. Nothing outstanding or surprising, which is just fine -- tacos, enchiladas, burritos are all good and the service is fast and friendly. Prices are appropriate. Being in a large strip mall, it gets a good amount of foot traffic, but I have seldom had to wait more than a few minutes for a table. Watch for coupons in that mailed packet you get once a month to save a few bucks on food! read more

I called in my order for 5:30 pm pickup. I arrived at 5:35pm. Order was not ready. Wasn't even cooked yet. Usually the pickup orders are placed on the shelf. when I got there. The staff rushed to the back to prepare the food. Told me to take a seat. I wait an additional 25 minutes for my order. UPDATED: Usually we go in the restaurant to eat and it's fast, service is good and they get the order right. But the last 3 times I've done a pick up / take out order, and this was before the pandemic, they've messed it up, forgetting items, food super cold or not cooked quite right. If it had started during the pandemic, I would have been more understanding- maybe people are sick or they're low on staff. This started in November. They've gone downhill on quality and paying attention to your order. Did a take out order this week. Was there right on time and my food had been sitting. Chips were looking over cooked and seemed stale. Ordered 6 tacos; only got 2. Ordered a side of queso and side of pico de gallo; didn't get it. They did put queso on top of chips and they were soggy. The 2 tacos I did receive were totally soggy. Tamale was overcooked and dry; couldn't eat it. I would have done 2 stars but the in restaurant experience has been good. I definitely won't ever order take out or delivery again, and I'm not sure I'll bother going in again. It's a shame because I've been going there for 12 years. read more

Another trip to Richmond, another new bite to eat, this is one of my favorite things about going down there. Jamee V. and Leah S. have a lot to do with it, but think of all those untapped restaurants just calling my name. Saturday night we went to Nuevo Mexican Restaurant to calm south of the boarder craving. We started with the standard chips and salsa and whatever that yummy ranch like hybrid dip they have. The salsa has a nice kick to it, it isn't overly spicy but has better flavor than most of the watered down gringo salsas people serve around here. Mom ordered queso and guacamole too; she thought she was feeding a small army. The queso is a white cheese which is a nice change from melted velveta I'm use too. The guacamole was good however it had chopped up tomato in it, and since I think tomatoes are the spawn of Satan, I didn't eat much of it. I ordered the Tacos Al Pastor. Basically... Al Pastor is a Central Mexican dish that uses dried chilies and pineapple to marinate and tenderize the pork. It's stewed together with some other spices and simply served in flour tortillas with raw white onion and cilantro. So simple and so delicious. The employees here are eager to help and are quick to get you anything you will need. My only complaint is the check out procedures. The servers don't take your payment; you have to stand near the register up front a la I-HOP style. The line gets pretty long, especially when the people in front of you are splitting their check, add that to the people coming in the door waiting to be seated and you have a little bit of chaos! read more

Mediocre Mexican. This place is right outside the community where Mom lives so I decided to stop in for a quick dinner. The meal started out OK with the chips and salsa - light, crisp chips and a decent chunky salsa. I didn't know you had to ask for the touted white salsa so I didn't get any. Boo. The salad and entree were terrible. First, they brought me the entire meal at once, even though I ordered the salad as a starter. The avocado and tomato salad was Ok - iceberg lettuce, white onion, tomato slices and avocado - but it had NO dressing. The tilapia and shrimp were plentiful and cooked OK but had no seasoning whatsoever. The rice was oily and again not seasoned, and the accompanying vegetables were an oily mix of zucchini, a few carrots and underdone potatoes. The waiter fever checked on me until I was well into the meal so I could not even ask for dressing for the salad. Love love love Nuevo! This is our regular Mexican restaurant that we would stop in easily once a week before the pandemic. They always have great daily specials! After being on personal lock down since March 13, I finally decided to venture out for take out. Naturally we chose Nuevo for our first treat out! I was a tad nervous ordering take out, since we always dine in but boy am I glad I went for it! The food was hot cheesy mexi perfection! The ordering over the phone process was a breeze. Was ready within 15 minutes- a large order too btw. Was met out front by their wonderful manager and seamlessly received our food! I am super OCD and not only did they make sure to bag everything according to my request but was SUPER generous with portions, chips, salsa and utensils. Can never say enough wonderful things about this spot, can't wait things are safe out in the world and we can dine in again! Also- when you can dine in their servers are always friendly, attentive and have yummy food with great prices! I would also like to add we got a variety of foods, taco, taquitos, pollo fiesta --all different textures and set ups and they all were packed well and traveled well too. I am from California and we recently moved to the Richmond area. My wife and I recently went to Nuevo Mexican Restaurant off of Staples Mill Road since it is close to where we live. What a disappointment. I was shocked when the chips and salsa arrived accompanied by some white sauce. It tasted like ranch dressing mixed with sugar. We've since gone to other "Mexican" places in Virginia and they all seem to serve this. The salsa was decent, as were the chips. We ordered a side of guac which needed some acid and salt. I ordered one of their many combination platters. The waiter didn't ask me what meat I wanted; just quickly gave an about face after I placed the order. When it arrived, it looked good, but the taste was anything but. It was all ground beef! Never in California would one even see ground beef on a menu at a decent Mexican restaurant. I should have known when my horchata or machaca wasn't on the menu. I did take a bite of each item to give it the benefit of the doubt, but it was merely confirmed. The service was decent, but nothing more than one should expect. I was surprised to read the other reviews claiming Nuevo's authenticity. Perhaps one was written by a fellow patron the night we dined. When the waiter came to remove plates, she said it was, "Excellent." Then, perhaps upon realizing for the first time that English was the second language of the server, pedantically and in a tone reserved for the severe hard of hearing said, "VERY EXCELLEN-TAY!" These are the clients they cater to, so I wouldn't expect anything more. If you're the type of person that needs ranch with Mexican food, then I pity you. The food was mediocre at best. read more

When I walked in on a rainy evening, the restaurant was fairly busy and I thought to myself..."Yes! Those Yelpers are right!" The mexican waiters definitely added a star for authenticity. We sat down and I looked around...hmm...the only Hispanics were the people working there...I guess that's okay. I ordered my favorite...carnitas soft tacos. The wait staff was really attentive and I was really getting into the music they had blaring over the speakers. And then the food came. It smelled so good. Okay...that was about it. I piled my soft taco with carnitas, refried beans, spanish rice and salsa and took a big bite of it. OMG! WTH? All I tasted was salt. Are you kidding me? I put my taco down and I tasted the carnitas first. Salty. I tried the refried beans. Salty. Spanish rice...more salt. Please..tell me the salsa isn't salty too...no it wasn't. Thank goodness. It's only saving grace was tomatoes and cilantro? Seriously, who the heck was cooking that day? I tried my best to eat it...but I found myself downing more water than food that meal. The entire I'm thinking...these people must have hypertension. The waiter came by looked at my plate and was shocked there wasn't even a dent in the food. "Did you want a box?" "Uhhhh...I guess so." I've been here twice, and it's a solid choice for Mexican, especially if you live nearby. (Please note, they have a few other locations in the Richmond area that I've heard are good too, but I haven't been to them hence I'm not going to review them...) The arroz con pollo is a bit heavy (particularly because they use a lot of cheese sauce, and their sauce is very rich), but the spinach enchiladas are AMAZING- they are filled with spinach and cheese that is flavorful and not too heavy, covered in lettuce with tomato, sour cream and guacamole on top, and served with beans and rice. I'm not much for vegetarian options when I go out, but I'd definitely order this again. And again. And again. Besides that, the white sauce that comes along with the salsa and chips is pretty good. I personally think that white sauces at mexican restaurants tend to taste like a bad version of ranch dressing, but this one is pretty alright even for me... AND, Wednesdays are $2.75 margarita nights. My sister got a strawberry margarita last night and I drank half of it, because it was DELICIOUS. read more

Two words: Special Mexico. Order that dish and you will not be disappointed. I've been to this restaurant several times as my parents live in the neighborhood behind the shopping center. They have excellent service, always delivering the food to your table insanely fast. It's as if somehow they're cooking what I want before I even order it. The food is pretty damn tasty, especially for suburban Glen Allen. While it's not anywhere near authentic, it's delicious. Who cares about authentic when the food is good? My only complaint is that they don't have Bohemia beer, my favorite brew from our neighbors down south. read more

Only the third best ethnic restaurant in the generic shopping center (behind Tokyo Sushi and Little Sezchuan), but it's slightly above average Mexican fare. This is your standard Richmond mexican joint with chips and salsa and the strange ranchy white sauce everyone has these days. The salsa here is quite flavorful and not run of the mill. I had the chori pollo which for the first time here, and it was quite good. Huge portions as you would expect. Service is always pretty good here. Prices are slightly higher than average for a mexican restaurant here. I think El Caporal beats Nuevo in food quality and it's also cheaper so I tend to go there unless I'm super close by. read more

Husband and I ordered a beer and a Pina Colada. Appetizer cheese dip and the beer came. Our entree came. Finally the Pina Colada came and was virgin. Didn't order a virgin drink and at that point I was half way through my entree. Told waitress I didn't want a virgin drink and she could cancel my drink order since it was so late in the meal. Never saw her again until she dropped the check and left. She did take our credit card at the register but as soon as she gave us the ticket to sign she left. I probably eat here more often than any other restaurant in Richmond. If a 5-star rating means I am always pleased with the food and service and prices, then I could award that. (I tend to think of 5-star dining as something unique and very expensive!) Anyway, I suppose they consider me a "regular". They know one of my favorite dishes is "Arroz con Mariscos" (Grilled shrimp and scallops served over a bed of Mexican white rice and covered with melted cheese and ranchero sauce. Served with guacamole salad and sour cream). The wait-staff is friendly, a very likeable group of guys. Management is hands-on. Josh particularly is personable and welcoming. I suggest you remove the word carnitas from the menu. Carnitas are cooked in lard. You boil your pork cubes then sauté them in butter or oil to pretend they are carnitas. Please stop and by the way, the rice is quite the disappointment. You can name it boiled pork cubes or boiled pork pieces with strange rice. read more

I live in the city, but a friend mentioned how delicious this place was, so I decided to drive out to Glen Allen to try it. They have complimentary "white sauce" no, not queso dip, that mysterious spicy-ish white sauce, ya know what I'm talking about?? They also have complimentary salsa & chips. The white sauce is to die for!! It's hard to find a restaurant that has it, because everyone offers salsa, but that white sauce, YUM!! Everything on the menu looked amazing, I ended up getting the fajita burrito, loved it. I need to go back and try the entire menu :) read more
