We had purchased a date night experience on Giftory for 2 people. We booked the 8pm class on a Friday evening. When we arrived the instructors were very welcoming and had us look at some of the pieces on the wall and social media for inspiration purposes. The place is small so it was us and another couple and we each got a private instructor. It's also BYOB. The reason for knocking off two stars: we were not told at the beginning of the class when we were deciding on what to make that painting our pieces would be an extra $100/person. Without painting the pieces, they are not food safe. I was disappointed to learn all of this information halfway through the class after sculpting my bowl on the wheel. I wouldn't have decided to make a serving bowl or a mug that I can't eat/drink out of; I would have picked something else. The date night experience that I purchase did not mention anything about this in the fine print, so we just felt deceived. While the experience was fun and we are happy we did it, just make sure to ask questions as to what is included BEFORE you decide what you're going to make. read more

Am I hooked on pottery now? Had a great time with Nina and Riley today! I've never taken a pottery class, so I was very nervous and excited to attend my first class. Riley and Nina were very encouraging the entire time and made me feel super comfortable. Riley was very good at explaining all of the steps and guiding us throughout the process. This was my first time doing something like this and Pottery Studio 1 is the place to be. The booking process was very easy. Once we arrived we were greeted by our expert Harper who was knowledgeable, friendly and attentive. Harper made this experience so fun and informative for beginners, I was very excited to jump right in. Even on a rainy day it was fun to over look Fidi while molding my clay. My partner and I enjoyed this experience so much, I am excited to pick up my master piece and even come back another time with a larger group! read more

I want to specify that this is for the Financial District location... my friends and I did a pottery class the first weekend of October. Our instructors were great. No complaints there and they are the only reason I'm giving 3 stars otherwise it'd be zero. While we worked, a woman (living in NJ) came in to pick up her pieces only to be told they had since been THROWN AWAY with no one contacting her for pickup prior to doing so. The two instructors did their best to apologize and try to explain the situation. We thought it was the woman to blame because she took a while to come back, but either way, her pieces should not have been thrown away without some kind of notice. We checked on IG to see when our pieces would be ready (because there is NO communication from anyone at this company). I called the first weekend of November to come in and was told I could come in before 8pm. I did, no one was there. I let it slide. Like the other woman, this location isn't somewhere I frequent often/live close to, so the next time, this past Tuesday, I went out of my way to pick up our pieces. Called in advance, was told yes, came ahead of time and still NO ONE there. There was a girl in the lobby who said the same thing happened to her. Every number to contact them leads to an operator who clearly isn't located directly at the location (and possibly not in the US from the way it sounds) and you cannot message them on IG either. Horrible customer service. read more

I came here for a birthday date with my boyfriend and we had the best experience. We had the entire place to ourselves for 2 hrs. This included our clay, painting and Kiln oven use. Out instructor was the best. Her name was Star. She was patient, helpful and graceful. She answered every question we had even as far as paints and mixing and different techniques to design our pottery. she was so amazing. She even sat through my boyfriend's questions about creating his own Studio because he loves to be an entrepreneur. she answered every business question he had on top of every Pottery question. She set up the studio so beautifully for us and had a lot of LED lights around our tables. she brought his glasses for hours wine. BYOB!!! She tools pictures of us, video. She was amazing. At the end of our session I realized that I could put additional items on my mugs and she stood with me an extra 30 minutes past my time to add details to my mug. I paid $300 for a couples package and I thought it was well worth the experience. Although she did tell inform me for $50 more I could have did four classes. Hello to whomever chooses to read this I had a grand time with the instructors heaven and Ezra. They are both nonchalant and very much welcoming people. I came in as someone who doesn't what to even do to someone that made a bowl! It was an amazing experience and the only true downside is if there was more time but honestly I would come back another day. The classes are small ranging from 1-3 people per class. It gives a great setting to learn and understand the basics needed to bring home a friend. Anyways it was a great time and highly recommend anyone who is interested and willing to get there hands dirty! read more

I loved this pottery class, and I was told at the end of it that they would put the art in the kiln and then I could pick it up soon. I called and visited the pottery studio multiple times over the course of five months and never received my pottery. I was told each time that despite having my name listed, despite having the date of when I took the class, and despite having pictures of the art I made that they could not return it without the number they provide you. I tried every way I could, but even with all this information I was turned away again and again. I tried one last time and was told I did not come with in the 30 day window so they destroyed it. I was heartbroken and hurt as I had been trying for 5 MONTHS! to get my art. I responded to that by saying how hurt I felt and that I would be sure to add a review of the studio based on this. Two minutes later I received an email saying they found my art, which was extremely suspicious since not 10 minutes earlier I was told it was destroyed. So either they lied or didn't do their job in looking around the very small studio for art I had sent pictures of. Regardless this was extremely weird and so now I will shout from the rooftops: do not go here as they may lie to you, ignore you, or tell you they've destroyed your work rather than spend two minutes searching for it. read more

Brought my husband here for a birthday surprise. We love art activities and have done hand made pottery before. Honestly didn't realize this was wheel throwing until we arrived. Perhaps the website wasn't updated. Excited about the opportunity to learn a new skill! Unfortunately, I would not recommend this experience to first timers. I was first turned off when looking at instructors pottery examples and without prompting, one of the instructors looked at me and told me to stop looking that direction and check out the beginner examples for inspiration. It's true, I suppose.. but it was unfortunate to be discouraged so immediately, and without her knowing anything about me. Once we got into the actual class, the other instructor was our guide. There was a sense of rushing, urgency. As beginners, there was no explanation of objectives or the process or basic tools. We were told to do something by verbally explaining and were expected to do it. And then when it went awry, the instructor would say, "What happened?" in a shaming way. And obviously we won't have answers because...we didn't understand what we were doing. We would dig, or we would pull out, but we didn't know for how long or what step connected to the piece that we were trying to make. The repetitious "what happened?" throughout the class was very unhelpful. Witnessing conversations with the other participants of the class, the instructor would tell them that they cannot do more to their piece because of fear of it breaking, it being too thin, etc. and then asking "Are you happy with your piece?" when obviously they weren't. It was disappointing that we didn't get the opportunity for a fair shot at nailing our pieces because of poor instruction. About 70 minutes into our class, my instructor took over building my piece and while they did, it collapsed. Then proceeded to name the ways I messed up but in a passive way. "Why did you pinch it so much?" Again, makes sense, but it was all very awkward. Then, as a beginner, I had to start from scratch and rebuild the piece I was making. Managed to do it in 20 minutes but because of a poor time management of the group class, I didn't start painting my piece until there was only about 10 minutes left of class. It was a very chaotic, awkward, and oddly shameful experience. It was disappointing to be planning a fun, creative birthday celebration, and for it to be more stressful than not. read more
