I am writing an update, which I so rarely do, because I have experienced one entire full season as…read morea CSA member and will not be returning again next year for the following reasons. First and foremost, someone needs to be on their payroll (or they at least need to get a dedicated volunteer for this purpose) that helps to find them grants to make their members happy. It's shared by the community (the CS in CSA), but keeping the paying members happy needs to be made a top priority. I'm not bitchin' about the weekly yield, because they don't control that. I'm bitchin' about how they dealt with members after the hurricane. Now, they were royally dumped on because they experienced catastrophic devastation, but since the farm is located in a county that was not declared a federal disaster county, they were not eligible for emergency aid from the federal government. They were able to secure funding to purchase some top soil, but they did not really keep members informed of the process as regularly as they should have (I think I received about 3 emails in a four week time period, and I did receive a phone call from the darling Sam who was literally working probably up until she actually gave birth. She is one heckuva saving grace for that place!!). Because of the damage, they suspended distribution all together for 4 weeks.... and when they resumed it, it was as if it was business as usual. Not even a "thanks for being patient" or "as a token of our appreciation for sticking with us, please take $25 off the cost of being a member next year, which by the way is going up $50 bucks!". I actually missed a couple weeks of distribution because there were no calls made that it resumed (they called me to tell me it had stopped....why couldn't they call me to come back?) I really wanted to make this work, and tried to make believers out of my family who doubted its value throughout the summer when the yields were small, but I'm not coming back next year. I hope they get a better board of directors because I think those knuckleheads are why the bad decisions are being made.

We had a wonderfully impromptu weekend sojourn to Fable Farm this past Saturday to pick up some local cider and donuts. Little did we know that Fable is also home to a slew of chickens and goats who are packed with personality and pluck, and totally made our day with their sweet and adorable antics! We had a great time watching the animals hang out and peck around their spacious pen enclosure, safe from the masked onlookers who came to gawk at the majesty of farmland critters. Honestly, any interactions with cute barnyard characters is a high point to my day, so Fable gets five stars on that alone! We also loved the local farmer's market that sets up here, and even though it was close to closing for the day, we were able to browse around for a bit. I didn't buy anything, but the produce looked fresh and there were lots of other locally made goods like honey and soaps. We'll be back for sure next time when we have more time to look around at all the offerings! The local cider and scrumptious donuts were our initial mission, and they did not disappoint. The cider was juicy and tangy, and I couldn't stop drinking it for the rest of the evening once we got home. I was able to limit myself to one cider donut (brushed with cinnamon sugar - yum!), but that was so difficult! My boyfriend's mom was delighted with the cider donuts we brought home for her, too. I highly recommend checking out Fable Farm for a low-key autumn afternoon activity!

I opted for the bi-week pick up for $235 = 8 weeks at the actual farm in Standfordville. Not knowing what to expect as I'm a complete newbie at this, I called for more info. Dave was so helpful on the phone, explaining how things works, where to park, when to come, etc. So I decided to join to try it out! When I arrived the first time, Dave was there to greet me and show me around - basically there's a sign-in sheet at the barn entrance along with a weekly newsletter. Bring your own reusable bags and also the thin plastic bags for produce (they have it there, but you can reuse the ones you get from grocery to save the planet). There's a big blackboard showing you what the share of the week is - It's the MAX amount you can take - so get all or get what's right for you. All of the produce are lay out neatly and orderly - it's really a fool-proof system and signs everywhere telling you how many you can take. There are also info on produce profile, food storage, and recipes along the back wall. They also have a section for "PYO" - pick your own! This is for your to go out to the garden and pick from the plant itself! Usually it always comprise flowers and herbs. It's only my second week, but I just LOVE how fresh the produce taste, LOVE having fresh flowers at home, and LOVE trying new recipes with vegetables we usually don't eat. It also forces me to eat more vegetables so i can clean out my fridge for the next pickup. Although I don't have any previous experience on CSA, but I do think this is as good as it gets!!

There was a lot going on throughout, including awesome live music, hot apple cider, farm store filled with gourmet products, multiple food vendors, pumpkin cheesecake tastings, and of course the vast orchard where all the apple trees were, which were all located uphill. There were over 10 different types of apples, such as Mutsu, Evergreen, Macoun, Snapdragon, and Honeycrisp. I mostly collected the more unique kinds. I also managed to locate the Pear trees, way behind the hay riding area. I picked Asian and Bosc pears. We went on a hay ride, which was $5 and it was rustic, bumpy, giving a sweeping view of the beautiful orchard grounds. Back in the main area, we had lunch. By this time, lines were pretty long, so we divided and conquered, as well as found a place to sit. I shared Pork Ribs and Fries, which were both very tasty. The Ribs were delightfully tender and well seasoned. Fries were perfectly crispy. One draw back was that most everything at the store and most lunch items were quite expensive. Overall, there were great vibes, and I really enjoyed the views at the farm, apple / pear picking, as well as the hay ride.

We started down at the bottom of the hill with "Apple Cannons" ! Pneumatic launchers that lobbed our apples into an old truck, pumpkins, hay bales, and fun targets. So awesome! Then we headed up to the main event and wow! It was a total vibe! - A live band playing exactly the perfect country music you'd expect at an apple orchard on a cool fall day. - Vendors selling soft & hard cider, juice, various hot foods, and my personal favorite, hot fresh apple cider donuts! - Costumed characters walking around passing out trick or treat candy to the kids. - An Apple orchard! Row after row after row of apple trees, most were picked pretty clean, but we found lots of juicy and delicious fruit waiting for us on the trees. You can wander around and eat whatever you want or buy a bag and take some home... We did both! Inside there's a general store and souvenir shop as well, and everyone we let or talked to was helpful and friendly, but we had all our fun out in the open.
