My Jeep Wrangler "died" on me last night in Morristown. I called AAA, which in turn called Powder Mill Towing. They were there on the double. I'm from Maryland. My car needed a repair while I was visiting friends in New Jersey for Thanksgiving. The car was not safe to drive at all when I tried to head home on Saturday. AAA recommended them for towing and I decided to have them also do the repair on my car. They picked the car up on Monday from my friends' driveway and towed to their shop. When I called, I was told that it was an "easy fix" and I had an extremely reasonable estimate before 2 p.m. on Monday. An unscrupulous mechanic could very easily have taken advantage of the fact that I was out of state and at their mercy. These guys were polite and professional each time I called. They didn't charge me a storage fee even though they had to hold the car for several days until I could get back to NJ. I would recommend them to anyone in their area. read more

through the AAA - they had someone come out to change a flat tire on my car. Guy showed up and asked me why I couldn't change it myself, told me that he should have been off duty by now and that my flat tire was in between him being home. As he changed tire, complained further that I could have changed the tire myself. Warning: DO NOT go there. We always choose Hertz for its high quality service. Sadly, this location doesn't meet Hertz standards. We arrange a pick up which was 4 min from there. They NEVER took my call, I tried to call them for 45 min! I HAD to take a taxi. When we finally got here, they didn't even apologize for not taking my call and had to take a a taxi for a service they offered! The office is filthy, dusty, the staff so rude like they didn't care about their business with Hertz. We waited for 25 min to get our car DIRTY, I assume they took that time to fill up the tank and they didn't clean it! We could not stand it and had to stop to get a car wash! The wait time to pick up a car, the rude service, the cleanness of the car. Everything was a bad experience at this place. If I could give this -5 Stars I would My boyfriend recently got his truck towed here because it broke down. They told him getting towed by Powder Mill he would get a 10% discount. We got a call saying that they fixed the truck and it was ready to be picked up the total was close to $600. We went to pick up the truck it ran worse than it did before it got towed there and now it won't run at all we have called Powder Mill multiple times to try and speak to the owner but the workers are refusing to put the owner on the phone and said the truck ran fine when they had it. then after we looked at the receipt we noticed that we were never given our discount. So now we need to have the truck towed to another shop because it won't run to drive it and we're going to have to pay another shop to do the same thing Powder Mill was supposed to do. I will never give this place my business again or ever recommend it to anyone they do not fix your vehicle they say they do they charge you out your ass and then give you a vehicle back that runs worse then it did before you brought it there. And they will not let you speak to a manager or the owner I highly recommend not going here and it seems like a lot of other people who posted reviews have the same opinion on this place. Sadly you cant give out zero star reviews. I would break this review into two parts. The repair shop is a bunch of crooks, I have not dealt with them directly, but everyone I know who has has been ripped off. Avoid at all costs. Towing business is not as bad, which is not to say good, I have had them come out a half a dozen times over the years and results have been variable. Some of the drivers nice and courteous, others downright skeevy. If you are working through AAA they generally are a little bit more reasonable. If you don't have AAA make sure you get the pricing up front as they tend to be a little bit "creative". Whatever you do, don't get towed to their garage. Beware, this place is a total rip off. They prey on people who break down on the highway and rip them off. We were overcharged on parts by parts and labor 50% or more. A fuel pump replacement which takes about two hours was billed at 4.8 hours and this is a 2 hour job. the fuel pump is $150 and we were charged $389, filter is $39 and we were charged $149. We are suing them in small claims court. read more

DO NOT use these guys. I did not choose them! I was in the parking lot around the corner and got towed. There is a sign in parking lot which you will not see until it is empty and you can not find your car! Apparently the Morris Hills Shopping Center has a midnight curfew! I did not leave area, I met friend and got in their car, we started with food and ended on other side by movies. So McDonalds, Home Good, & Movie theater patrons be warned. Keep all your receipts and stubs because the guy who towed my car called me a liar. He did not believe that I met someone there and spent a few hours on the property eating, talking and movie theater. Is this not a typical night for friends or even dating? It is a shame that his world has gotten so crazy that he did not believe me when telling the truth. Sorry I was raised right and actually throw out my garbage in trash cans and not on the floor. Who saves their stubs? Who thinks they will need to prove their details of evening out? The last movie gets out after midnight! I was not there much after midnight, the guy even admitted they are there at 12:01 and there is no leeway! So for this scam, they tow car to their facility around back not even 2 miles and just a few minutes to steal your car and then charge almost $200 for it! read more

Crooks! They utilize illegal "predatory towing" practices. Towed my car less than 1 mile - then charged $250 for me to get it back less than 12 hours later. This needs to be two separate reviews- the towing, and then the repairs. The towing was efficient, and quick. They showed up in half the time AAA told me it would take him. And that was on a Sunday late afternoon, so that's great. The repairs on the other hand.....they were done in half a day, which with an old car, finding parts, etc. well, ok. But the heater hose that needed repair ranged between 12 and 24 dollars(my mechanic later told me about $20) and they charged me $49 for the part. Labor took about the amount of time I expected. Given that I was stuck several states away from home I didn't really have alot of choice, but wouldn't it be refreshing to just get charged what you are SUPPOSED to be charged???? so towing-GOOD. repairs, MAYBE NOT. read more

3.5 stars, but I'll round up. My 2 year old Honda went dead. I called Honda Assistance, and they dispatched Powder Mill. They got to me under 30 minutes, and per agreement with Honda decided to tow me to the dealer. Because the car was "stuck" in brake, and all these new cars are electronic, I was kind of concerned. But eventually I signed the waiver, and the driver Kenny shows me a trick where you can manually shift the car into neutral (I wish he would have said he knew how to do this earlier instead of me worrying , etc.) with a screwdriver . Anyway, Kenny was pretty gentle with the car as he got it on the tow truck. I hitched a ride with him to the dealer, and he was pretty personable. As we got to the dealer, he got the car down...no scratches, no bumps, etc. I appreciated how careful he was. Not sure if all of Powder Mill's drivers are like that, but certainly the tower left a good impression where I would certainly call them for a tow if need be. read more

Recently, my car needed new front tires and an alignment, I felt it would be better going to a tire place in my area, which I did. The manager of tire place called me to let me know my brake fluid was BROWN.. I said, "how can that be, I just had new brakes put on", the manager said "I know you did, I can tell, they just never flushed the fluids". Now, you're wondering what this has to do with Powder Mill. The problem is, I had my brakes done at powder mill and they never touched the brake fluid. I paid almost 600 HUNDRED DOLLARS for a brake job and they left the old fluids. IN ADDITION, the grease that was all over the steering wheel and on the hood of my car, not to mention, turned my car on to drive home and was DEAFENED by the volume. It seems the mechanics at Powder Mill enjoyed the sound system in my car so much they had the volume ALL THE WAY UP.. Now, I'm not so much of a scrooge that I am annoyed at them using my stereo, what I'm annoyed about is what if they blew the speakers out? What if I had a child or a senior citizen in the car when I started it, should they get their ears blasted? I may be female, but I'm not car-stupid. I've been a long time customer at Powder Mill, its shame I now need to go somewhere else. read more

AAA sent a driver from Powder Mill Towing to assist with a blown tire as we weren't able to get the lug nuts off. The driver was very friendly and truly cared about helping us out. He threw the donut on but since we had a long drive ahead of us he offered to call his shop to see if they had a full size tire. They did not have the tire in stock but the fact that he even offered and took time to make the call to his office was very professional. read more

Worst Company Ever! Don't know why AAA endorses this company. Felt like I was dealing with thugs!

Well, I went to this towing company to get the tire fixed for my car. The air was leaking and I had to put air every other day. It was a cold night and the guy X behind the counter told mechanic to check the tire. There was a nail in the tire so he said he'll fix it and put a patch on the tire. Me and my wife went inside in the waiting area and after a while the guy X behind counter started smoking in there, it was RUDE. We couldnt go out because of the cold. The mechanic took his sweet time and when it's fixed i was paying and asked if theres any guranty for the work he did. The guy laughed and rudely said there's no gurantee for this work. I went home parked the car and the next morning as I suspected the tire was flat.. I had to call my roadside assistance and the guy from another towing compnay came and changed the tire with the Donut. He said If you would have called us we would have fixed the tire last night with 3 months gurantee and you didnt have to be late for work. Ironicaly the Donut tire got flat while I was going to work.. and the same guy form other company came and fixed the old tire and put a patch with 3 months gurantee. I called Powdre mill next day and asked them to componsate me what hapened and atleast if I buy a new tire form them give me a break of the cost of tire fixture they did the other day.. but the guy rudely said No and gave me some higher price for an unkown tire. I had my car towed recently. They charged me $45 cash to go less than a mile as a favor to their"buddy" from a local gas station who saw me stranded and called them to help me out. They took the cash and towed my car. They showed up a month later at my door with a tow truck telling me I owed them $45. ???? I told them I paid already and referred them back to their "buddy" who had incidentally charged my roadside assistance company $125. for the tow which they promptly paid directly to him. Powder Mill Towing tried stealing my truck from a parking lot claiming it was illegally parked. When I came out of my residence he was dragging the truck sideways by the front end towards his truck!. He said that since he had a chain on it that it was going to cost me $150 cash only to unhook the chain. He asked how much cash I had in my pocket. When I said I only had $20 cash on me he refused to help me out. He told me to go walk to an ATM( miles away) and get him cash or he was taking the truck and it would cost hundreds more to get out of an impound. I tried explaining that I am a volunteer EMT who needs his truck to respond to emergencies in town and he said "other people can respond". Avoid at all costs!!! INCREDIBLY DISHONEST. My alternator gave out and i got towed here by AAA on my way to Pittsburgh. I have worked as a mechanic for 5 years, so i know when i'm being cheated. The manager quoted me $600 for the job ($300 for parts, $300 for labor)!!! I knew this was way too high so I called a NAPA a mile down the road and asked for a price on a rebuilt alternator, they told me $120. I called 4 other shops in the area and asked what they would charge for labor, all said between 1 and 1.5 hours (ALLDATA says 1.2hrs for the job). At $90/hr this is $135. I called them back and asked why they were overcharging. They said that they use ALLDATA too and it said 3.5hrs. This was a blatant lie. I requested a rebuilt alternator and the manager said he would drop the price down to $350 (which was still too high). I said fine because I already spent one night in a hotel and needed to be in pittsburgh that night. When i came to pick up the car, they gave me a bill for $550 dollars and basically told me pay it or we put your bad alternator back in. They also ordered me a new dealer alternator instead of a rebuilt like i asked (they make more off the mark-up). I called AAA to report this. They had someone investigate and refunded me the difference in labor cost (about $150), but couldn't get me $200 dollar difference between a new and rebuilt alternator. They pulled this on me because I was stuck between destinations, and had very few option. Shame on them. read more

Powder Mill Towing is a crooked operation, buyer beware! My wife's car did not start. She contacted triple a. Powder Mill Towing arrived. My wife stated the car need a jump start and would not require a tow. The driver pretended to connect the jumper cables and stated the car would not start. He then stated "if you take it to our repair shop there is no extra charge." My wife unsure what to do agreed. I arrived home and proceeded to the shop. I knew the " change battery" light went on the day before but had not had the opportunity to fix it. I opened my vehicles hood and clearly noticed that no one attempted to connect battery cable to the battery. An air cleaner attachment has to be removed to get access to the battery. The attachment was in place and had never been touched. I proceeded to jump start the car and was on my way. This company has numerous bad reviews. It clearly was taking advantage and a person who does not know about vehicles. The employees were rude when I arrived at the location. It was obvious that the were surprised when a man showed up and remedied the issue so quickly. I was glad I got my vehicle out of there before they could have "looked at it" the next morning as they told my wife. read more

We had a very bad experience with this towing company last week. My husband had a road accident when he was riding his motor bike and the bike was moved to a shop close by as he had hurt his knee. We asked AAA to tow the motor bike for us. As AAA insisted someone should be present on the spot I was there with my husband. AAA informed us the towing vehicle will be reaching the place at 3 PM. Even after 4 PM there was no sign of the vehicle and the AAA on calling informed us that the towing company will be calling us. After 20 mins someone from the company called us(I later realized that the person was driving the truck himself) saying that his man will be there in another 30 mins. When my husband told him that we had been waiting for more than 2 hrs now, he rudely answered that people wait for him for more than 3 hrs on the roads. When I made my husband sit on the car when he was loading the bike on his vehicle he went in an argument with me asking me to sit on the bike to clamp it to the vehicle or else he will leave it there. The whole time he was talking rudely and had a very bad attitude. I will never use AAA if they are going to send the same towing company again. read more
