Sign on the door; "We repair E-bike batteries", so I brought mine in. Explained that the battery went to zero volts and wouldn't recharge. Asked if he could give a trickle charge to regain voltage or if he had an expert trick. His response was that he didn't have a charger for my brand. I told him I have a charger. His response was he didn't know if my charger was good. I explained that I tested mine and it's good. Him; "well, I would need a second one to swap and verify". I explained I was an electronics tech and tested it, it's good. He told me to, FIX IT MYSELF THEN! Next, I inquired about the sign on the door...his reply was; "yes but only ours. We just drove up from Lincoln Park to pick up two bicycles from Prairie Path Cycles. We had been looking for several different bike models and none of them were available in the city every store quoting "supply chain issues ". Using the Trek website they were nowhere to be found except Prairie Path cycles. In fact prairie path cycle had stock for three of the three bikes that we were looking for. We ordered them over the phone so that they would be ready for us when we went to pick them up. We were told that it would probably take three or four days before they would be ready. I truly appreciate that they under promised and over delivered because they were ready the next day! The experience in the store was wonderful. Mary Lee and our sales associate ( I forgot her name I'm very sorry :-) were beyond friendly and Assisted us with purchasing accessories And testing out and adjusting our new Bikes. I have to also give a shout out to the bicycle technicians because they were also extremely friendly. Helped with some minor adjustments very quickly and also happily trained us on using the Bike computer. Having driven 40 miles we hoped against hope that both of our bicycles would fit into our small SUV. But we expected to just retrieve one bike and come back another day for the second. The amazing Chris was able to arrange both bikes snuggly into the back and saved us the second trip. I called in on a Sunday morning to Bring my just purchased used Ridley road bike in for a gear adjustment. I was told would be about 8$ as long as that was all that was needed. I rode in. Greeted by the friendly staff. They adjusted my gears while i waited. 10 mins. Also was able to chat with the tech. Recommended a chain replacement because mine was stretched. I paid 50$ for a gear adjustment and chain replacement. Fair price. Bike rode like new. Smooth on point shifting. Only thing i forgot was a tire pressure top off. I trust them to do repairs and tricky maintenance that exceed my experience or tool collection on my mid- to higher-end bikes. At any given time, they seem to employ one or two of the best bicycle repair technicians in the region. They explain everything extremely well, are very fair in pricing (I often find myself suggesting that they should charge me more for labor) and are just a pleasure to work with. So, I heard how great this place was. It's near my daughter's house, so I thought I would buy my new bicycle there. Not a good experience. I can't give a good recommednation for the following reasons: - Very little guidance in choosing a bike - Bicycle was not properly prep'ed - Didn't pay much attention to me. I didn't do a lot of homework and was depending on their guidance to choose the right bike. They offered little to none. After getting the bike home found that it was geared very low. This was closer to a mountain bike than an x-country bike. before visiting the shop I did read about this model and expected it to be decent for commuting too. For me it was not. My solution for this is that I am going to keep my old bike for commuting and riding the paths (I'll give it an overhaul.) I'll use this new one for challenging trails only. They didn't properly prep the bike. The chain was not properly lubed and the gears kept catching/slipping. There seemed to be something sticky on the chain. I cleaned the chain and gave it a wet lube. This took care of the problem. The front disk brake continues to rub. I did not own a bike with disk brakes before and don't know that much about them. It's not really bad, but the rubbing is annoying. I would like them to fix this, but its not an easy matter for me to get the bike back there. May investigate disk breaks on youtube. I'm sure it can't be too hard to take of. After I paid for the bike they pretty much ignored me and I walked out. I was trying to get information on a bike for my son. Will not return. We'll head over to the Trek dealer in Downers Grove next time. I know that this place gets good reviews, but my experience was not good. They did send out an email requesting feedback on my experience. I wrote back pretty much what I listed hear. Got a return email indicating that they would look into the matter; however, after over a week have not heard back from them. I shopped at 3 bike stores before I decided to do business with Prairie Path cycles. I went in expressing interest in the Trek FX3 and spoke with Sean. I explained to him what type of riding I expected to do along with my physical limitations. He suggested I also test ride the Trek Verve. I actually rode both bicycles TWICE before I settled on the FX3. They helped me with lighting options and a computer and mounted them on the FX3. They even swapped out the stock seat post for the suspension seat post. (It just cost me the amount of the seatpost - no labor charge.) I had a half dozen questions that Sean patiently considered and answered. I appreciate the great customer service they extended to me. I like their philosophy as well. They want you to be comfortable on your ride so that you ride more often. They will offer ideas so that your bike fits you to a "T". It's not a "this is the way the bike comes" attitude. Yesterday I unloaded my bike at the Villa Park start of the Great Western Path and realized my rear shifter could not move. I was in the smallest cog after placing a tube into my tubeless tire before leaving because I had no time to add the sealant for the first time. I rode to Prairie Path Cycles in Winfield and right as I pulled up a woman at the store greeted me and asked how I could be helped. I explained to her the issue and she walked my bike to the shop and explained to the mechanic what was wrong. The mechanic placed my bike on the stand and showed me that the cable became disconnected under the shifter hood. He replaced the cable and made additional adjustments including on my front derailer and showed me that that cable also had early fraying. He told me his suggestions and I asked that he write them down so I could bring his suggestions to my LBS. He gladly did so so I could be on my way and continue my loop with my patient riding partner. Outstanding service right when you walk in the door, quick and thorough service, and very reasonable. Disappointed. Called to get a quote for help with assembling the breaks on my already assembled new bike; they said it was $40. When I got there bumped it up to $80. This is a NEW bike and was already assembled by the manufacturer. All I needed was help on assembling the breaks. I will gladly pay for any service well done but the way the lady bumped it up on me out of nowhere and blamed it on it needing a "tune-up" seemed shady to me. She wouldn't even discuss it without getting annoyed by my why questions. Decided to go get my bike back. Still charged me $10 for tightening the pedals even though they said they wouldn't be finished with it until a week later. Winfield is an awfully long way to go for a bicycle, especially when the Fox Valley corridor has more bike shops than you can shake a stick at. But after I made the decision to invest in a solid introductory road bike, I researched everything from Batavia to Oak Park and Mundelein for the prime store. Prairie Path came up golden. I narrowed down my shopping decision to a Trek frame, and I was stuck between a prior year's model discounted at the Downers Grove Trek store and the newer model sold at Prairie Path. In part, the Trek store's callous disinterest in me as a fairly new cyclist sealed my choice to look elsewhere. In exchange for my willingness to part with upwards of $1,600 on a quality bike and accessories, I needed some help. I had a list of reasonable questions and probably a number of foolish ones to a dedicated pedal-head, a tidy list of specifications I needed to meet, and gear I wanted to buy. The salesperson at Prairie Path heard me out on my choices, looked over my list, and asked if I wanted to walk around the store to feel out what they had or if I wanted assistance the whole way. Quoi? Real, full service care in this day in age? I think I stared at him like he grew cat ears and started singing the Soviet national anthem. Putting myself in Prairie Path's expert hands was one of the best buying decisions I ever made. With the no pressure techniques, the manager himself came out and walked with me to see the bikes in my budget. He started off by actually watching me walk to get a sense of my gait and balance. After being measured for a frame, we found I was between two (at 5'11", this isn't a surprise) and he pulled out a variety of options for me to sit until we found just the right height. Never mind other customers were coming in on a gorgeous afternoon, he was determined I would walk out with something that fit me perfectly. I appreciated that as we bounced between 1.3s and 1.5s, and he gently corrected my form even while stationary to assure the best overall fit. All the while, he reviewed my questions one by one, educating me on the differences between derailleur sets and cushy seats or streamlined seats. He was patient and enthusiastic. Staff didn't try to upsell me or push something on me I didn't need. I wasn't sure on storage space (basket, saddle bags, rat trap?) and we came up with an expandable solution to meet my needs. I saved $80 not getting saddle bags off the bat -- a good thing, as a change of jobs makes bike commuting impossible. Once I purchased me shiny new Trek bike, I cycled a bit awkwardly around the parking lot while another associate checked my posture, made the necessary adjustments, and decided the cycling shoes I had weren't clipping in properly. A few more swaps and fiddling gave me the smoothest ride this side of a waterpark. Cycling felt natural and comfortable, minus the penchant to look up every few seconds instead of stare at the ground. That's something which comes with time. Like Jennifer P notes, Prairie Path shows you basic assembly and disassembly, transportation, and equipment use. I wish I had signed up for a class on basic maintenance like fixing a flat, an area I feel insufficiently educated in. But they made certain I wasn't riding away without a good understanding for my investment, a comfortable ride, and most of all, a bike that fit my lifestyle and skills. They told me to come back if anything felt amiss when I was riding -- well, I'm happy to say it's all smooth riding (minus my own physical limits, as I'm not the most graceful sylph ever). I have been to them all, I have price checked them all, I have met many of the people in the business around the area, and none of them have come close to treating me the way that Prairie Path does. Probably not the shop if you are looking for a bike in the $100 range, but if you have $200 then this is the place to start. Remember, you aren't getting a Schwinn, Huffy, or NEXT from this place. You are getting a bike that is manufactured by the #1 manufacturer in the world, Trek. You are getting a bike that is just right for you, at a really good price for the quality of the bike. The owners, Mike and Mary Lee, are two of the best people I have ever met in my life. They are so much fun and they won't rip you off. They are great people. Their techs are bar none some of the best I have had the privilege of using. Rob is top notch, not many better than him in the world! Their sales staff is professional yet fun. They know their product, and if it isn't on the floor, they have a shop in Batavia that just might have it. If they do, they will bring it over if you don't want to drive 10 miles down Geneva Rd. And if neither shop doesn't have it, no worries, they can order it and in most cases have it the following week. If you are looking for a bike to cruise around on or head down the Prairie Path, or looking for a bike that will get you in shape, or a bike you can race the mean streets of Chicago on, or a mountain bike to take off road and get dirty on, they have it, and they have a very good range of bikes starting from entry level all the way up to the extreme pro level. Soooooo my son and I were on a mission to purchase a bike with eyes set on a Trek. After a disappointing interaction at the Trek store in Naperville, I did a quick research to see who else might carry Trek bikes in the area. Winfield wasn't on my radar but - duh - why would t a bike shop be right off of a bike path?! When we entered Prairie Path, my son told me we could trust this place because "the Grateful Dead is playing." It definitely didn't hurt my first impression of them! Haha A kind young man gave us some general information about the bikes we were looking at and then had the in house expert assist us. They had my son ride the bike he was interested in and it was an immediate fit. They fitted the seat for him and were wonderful at assisting us with putting it into the car. Prairie Path is a local, family-owned business with that small store customer service and friendly feel. They sell mostly new Trek bikes here, but they also have some used ones and are really good at helping you figure out what to get. We gotten a bike for a kid, a tagalong bike (the kind that hooks to the back of your bike and the kid pedals) and a grownup bike. They really take their time with you and don't make you feel pressured. The repair center is NOT at this location, it's about 10 doors down in the same strip mall. They have a sign in front of the shop telling you that. This is not far from the prairie path crossing at Geneva and Winfield Road, so if you are on the path and need some bike help you can go here! read more

First ride after having bike maintenance tune up and new chains and cables on the tandem. We made a reservation a week in advance to take it in to Prarie Path Cycles while we were in Tampa for the week. We told them we wanted new chains and cables but did they bother it order the longer chains and cables for a tandem? Hell no!! We leave it with the and call them up a week later after we return from Tampa. Only to find out the bike sat there the entire week never being touched. Their excuse of course was "We're waiting for the tandem chain and cables to com in from our other store!" What a bunch of BS!! The never even ordered it until I called! Then they had to hurry and get it done and of course they can't do it right! They can't even get the pedals in sync!! So now we have to take it back for re-work! Just seems that pre-ordering materials yo need ahead of time and taking time to do the job right the first time would really help your overworked mechanics from all the backlog! I have bought multiple bikes from this shop and have been a customer since they were known for selling Schwinn bikes. I have never had a bad experience with the shop and would recommend anyone to go there if they are in need of a bike or just some help. New bikes are put together professionally and come with two free tune-ups for that next year. Service on the bikes is great and have brought in my bike more than a few times to get tuned up and new parts put on. The workers know what they are talking about and are very passionate about their work, which helps out a lot when finding a bike. The location of the shop is perfect for Prairie Path riders and they have a great selection for road and hybrid bikes. I was looking for a new bike while at home for the stay at home orders. I used the Prairie Path Cycles website to pick and pay for my bike but I was called and told that the bike was no longer available due to the increase in demand due to COVID-19. That was completely understandable to me but they went above and beyond by offering me a loaner bike until mine became available later in the year. While reviewing the loaner bikes they found that my bike was available in another location so they brought it to Winfield and it was available to me the very next day! I was very happy that they went above and beyond to make me happy during a tough situation. Picking up the bike was very easy and everyone was extremely friendly. I purchased a used bike from Prairie Path Cycles in the summer of 2016, and I am not impressed by the experience or the work I have had to put into the bike since this time. With any used bike there are inherent risks that coincide with purchasing the bike, but what I found is inexcusable. Since my purchase I have moved to Washington, DC and brought my bike with me. I recently brought the bike into my LBS for a spring cleaning, maintenance and new brake pads. The new brake pads are fairly standard, and I saw they were worn down when I purchased the bike. However, I found out that the bike was sold to me with a chain that was too short, and the derailleur was the wrong size. The combination of the two could lead to the rear derailleur shifting into the spokes of the wheel, and cause serious injury or death. I expect much better from a store staffed by professionals. These flaws suggest that the mechanics at Prairie Path Cycles lack the expertise to recognize these major flaws, or they do not have enough concern for the safety of a customer. I would not recommend giving business to this store and would encourage others to visit other stores in this area. read more

I was very impressed with our first visit to local bike shop. We came in just a few minutes before closing on a Sunday to get a couple of wheels repaired. Even though they were closing in just a few minutes they happily took them and offered to do them while we waited.
