I'm a man who likes to give places a few shots. If you have an awful experience, it's not always the restaurant's fault. That being the case, the Schooner unfortunately still deserves a 1 star. Three separate times I have waited over an 1hr with work colleagues to get food. In one instance, after waiting 1hr 20min, we got up and left. They hadn't even remembered to refill our drinks, much less approach us and give us any sort of clue as to when we would be served. We asked when we would be served they said, "should be right out," without checking with the kitchen. It was not. The third time we went we asked if it would be much of a wait. They said "No, most everyone in here has already been served." Whether or not that information was correct, we -- for the third time in a month, mind you -- waited over an hour for our food. The staff hardly acknowledged us, our drinks were rarely refilled. The staff does not seem like one for small talk either. The coffee is pretty bad, but the food isn't bad for the price. Think cheap American diner food. It could be a lunch stop if we could only get served! I imagine this is a good bar for the locals in the neighborhood at night, a little passed dinner time - but it certainly doesn't feel welcoming to anyone else. It's hard to talk to your server, your food takes forever and it's not like you're at a 5-star restaurant. read more

Ok, if you like a greasy spoon that actually has decent food and waitresses with big hair, this is the place for you! I had a most awesome sausage omlette, the crispiest bacon ever and decent coffee. You can get mixed drinks, and even smoke in there if you so desire. Nice, out of the way place to get your grub on! read more

I eat here often because it is close to home and work. Lunch and dinner are normally pretty good. Service is just ok, dont expect to get a refill on your drink when its empty. Service this morning was better than normal because i sat next to the owner. Breakfast wasnt very good. Pancake was dry and tasteless. What kills me besides the service is they charge you for any little change and don't share with you the up charge. Peanut butter over butter $.50 when I just paid for $4.50 for a dry pancake. You would think she would wonder why I only ate 2 bites of it, but nope not interested in knowing why, and I am not in the mood to share either. Just give them a yelp review call it good. read more

35 minutes for coffee that tasted like freeze dried Tasters Choice and two hours for a very mediocre breakfast- need I say more? The staff was pretty nonchalant about getting us coffee, water, cups or even silverware. The server kept telling us that our ticket was coming up, but we watched table after table get seated, served and leave, before we even got a sniff of our food cooking in the kitchen. The only reason this place is getting two stars is because of the fact that my family and friends made this dining experience so much fun. I have lived in many states and breakfast "joints" are my favorite! From the dive to the divine, if it has good food, friendly staff, and it's clean; then I'm there.... this place lacked in every category. When they invented the term "dive," they had this place in mind. With its bar along the back wall, pool tables around a corner, and weird bi-level dining area, it gives the distinct impression of a place that hasn't been messed with in a very long time. It's not close to much of anything either, about half a mile from the Beltline. Yet it's destination dining for a large number of people. The parking lot is large and fills up on weekends. DLW and I met some friends here for dinner and drinks on a Friday, and the place was hopping with big groups and couples. Intimate this place is not, much more a hangout for middle-aged and older (too far from campus to attract college kids). The menu is pretty standard bar food, but it's well executed. Our fried appetizer platter had chicken wings, tater tots, onion rings, mozzarella sticks and mushrooms, with five dipping sauces. All were cooked well, though breading was heavy. Drink selections are better than you may expect. Our waitress was just the sort you find at places like this: elaborate hairstyle, chatty despite being very busy, handling it like she's been doing it for 40 years, because she has. TVs are inescapable, visible from every seat. You need to be in the right frame of mind to enjoy this place. Just think "dive night out." read more

This bar is not really that bad for a run down, dirty dive bar. The staff is pretty rude if you don't come here every day, but if you do, then they are great. The place is really filthy and I gave no clue how they pass any kind of health inspection. The owner is the real kicker, he is a racist drunk and will soon fall off his high horse. In the middle of a dinner rush he yelled at a veteran that was disabled and had a service dog, then told another guy that he had more respect for some gooks and ni**ers. Wow don't waste your time, energy nor money on these racist drunks. read more

So dissatisfied. We called in a to-go order. Two chicken fried steaks, and a stack of pancakes. Picked up our order, got home and realized we had only half our order. No eggs, no gravy, no hash browns, or biscuit. Drove 15 minutes back to the establishment to pick up the rest of the order. STILL not correct. Cold food, unseasoned hash browns, and over done eggs. Still forgetting the gravy. We spoke to the manager over the phone... she was very disrespectful and only made excuses. If you're looking for a good breakfast, I recommend going to McDonald's before this place. Yuck. read more

Owner was extremely rude and cannot hold his temper to save his life. I couldn't even ask a question without the owner chortling and acting extremely unprofessional, very drunk-like. I was treated awfully as a customer in this establishment and I will not be returning. This marks my 3rd visit and the experience was the same every time - disappointment. I ordered food and I feel like I was overcharged for how little the portion size was, and the food tastes like it came from a corner store cooler. The bar itself smells like the pits of a homeless person sleeping next to a dumpster! Looks like it may have been a good spot once, but like an old and useless dog, it needs to be taken out and shot. Do not go here if you find Fox news offensive. On constantly. Food is average bar food except their clam chowder which is exceptional. The manager cook is awesome. After ordering lunch on a Friday for the office I will say the calm chowder was good BUT the chicken gizzards were under cooked and rubber tasting. The breading just fell of and they were terrible. The wife and I swung in here on a whim. I was hungry, she claimed that they had good food. She was semi correct! I had a HUGE burger and onion rings. The burger was cooked thoroughly, yet still juicy and flavorful and the condiments and veggies were great additions to the beef! The onion rings were mediocre, nothing to write home about. The reason I give this place 2 stars is because it was a semi-seedy/dirty environment and our drinks (long island iced tea and a whiskey and coke) were both watery to taste. When I ordered a soda, after my whiskey and coke, I found out that the soda, too, tasted a bit watery. Not sure what the cause of the watered down drinks was, but I'd like to have a meal elsewhere, most days. read more

Look folks...you go to the Prairie Schooner for their broasted chicken with potatoes. And beer. Or drinks. But mainly the broasted chicken. It is the epitome of what fried chicken should be. The pressure cooking process cooks the chicken perfectly without allowing the grease to infuse into the breaded chicken. And the taters are just yummmmm. read more

Worst service ever or should I say lack or service completely. Went in on a Saturday at 6pm and sat at w bar table for ten min before even getting menus then when we went to bar and asked for menus... They never came and greeted us at our table.. The new young staff ( tall brown haired girl and short blonde girl) didn't even bus our table or even acknowledge our presence and they had seen us and been looking the entire time. They also were texting on their phones and laughing behind the bar knowing we were just waiting for service. We finally got up and left because we sat there for another 10 min and no one ever came. This neighborhood bar,restaurant is a lot like our own little Cheers. Regulars hang out at the end of the bar drinking beer. Thursday night ribs and cheap tacos keep the staff moving. prime rib on Friday is great. Like most of their homemade soups, but clam chowder on Friday is to die for. As a single women I feel welcome and never feel uncomfortable walking into the schooner by myself. I always take out of town visitors to my favorite dive. read more

Been visiting this place on and off for years. I would say the food quality has gone downhill for the most part, but it's still a good place to get a decent meal. Don't expect to get your meat cooked to order right or to get any heaping portions anymore. The lunch staff was nice and pretty on top of it. If you want a decent burger for around $10 then pop by. Honestly, you'd be better off to hit a 5-guys unless you absolutely have to have alcohol or play video poker while you eat. Don't really recommend or ward against this place. The elkburger was tasty. It took forever to get however. 3 of us ordered burgers. One had coleslaw instead of fries, one had green salad instead of fries and one had potato salad instead of fries. Yep, all three came with fries. Server didn't even notice, flopped down the food and left. Never came back to see how we were doing. So I mentioned it to her, no I'm sorry or anything. Just, "Oh". I had read the poor reviews which were older, so thought we'd give it a try. No wonder there were so few people there at 1:00PM on a Tuesday. read more
