My father and law has been coming her for many years. For the first time ever he invited me to join him to meet his long time friend for lunch. The Prairie Schooner Tavern has a very down to earth feel, as you walk in you walk right into the main seating area on the ground level, you will also find a few slot machines and the bar top. The building has an elevated seating area in an L shape that overlooks the lower seating area, at one time the main floor was a dance floor. The walls are covered with amazing retro pictures, you are taken back to the 70's including the wood grain walls. We were greeted right away, by a very friendly staff member, we sat in his usual spot. They have a huge menu to choose from, you will find many burgers, sandwiches, broasted chicken, pork, steaks and seafood. If your in the mood for breakfast they have some great choices. We ordered the Smokey meat,bacon cheeseburger and steak fries. A great tasting patty, perfectly cooked, with lots of pickles and lettuce, the steak fries are huge and amazing. My father in law had the chicken strip basket with a salad, the strips were huge as well as a nice size salad. We enjoyed the food so much we returned for breakfast the next day. I ordered the bacon, two eggs, hashbrown and two huge pancakes. I only had one pancake, I took the other one home. The price of the food was very reasonable. It may not look like much from the outside of the tavern but, its a diamond in the ruff. read more

The location and atmosphere are so- so BUT if you want good food, Large portions at a great price. This place is for You! I ordered off of the breakfast menu. I had two eggs over easy, hash brown potatoes and chicken fried steak with two slices of a very good sourdough toasted bread. Ate corned beef and cabbage here in 2024 on St. Pats day. Was excellent. So went back last night (2025). Not good. Thick slice of corned beef had been on grill, one small cabbage leaf ( I'm not kidding) raw, uncooked diced red potatoes and carrots, no horseradish, which showed up end of meal, There were 3 of us and each plate was different. No portion control. There was one harried waitress covering way too many tops to give good service. I give her credit. She was doing a hell of a good job. Was not a good experience. They need a cook who can handle dinners or at least knows how to do St.Pats. Will find another place next year. read more

Picked up my daughter from the airport and we decided to grab a bite to eat before heading back to our town. We found This is a little "hole in the wall" place by searching for something nearby. I am so impressed. The food was AMAZING, fresh and plentiful. Our server Jen B, was really attentive and friendly and equally as amazing as our food. Had 2 hours while beloved bride was in the beauty parlour. I've had a craving for sawmill gravy, and room for a single biscuit. I've got friends in the neighborhood, and thought I'd check this place out. Got there before the lunch rush (darn lucky -- it fills up) and got to chat with both waitstaff and later with the cook. I knew EXACTLY what I wanted and ordered without really perusing the menu. Coffee came quickly, was hot and very good. (NB- I had to ask for cream - which came out cold in a 2oz pitcher). Thoughout my visit I kept getting refilled without looking for it. That's a sign of a place to not miss - inobtrusive but attendant service. The biscuit showed up with the usual trimmings covered with HOT and FLAVORFUL gravy. Biscuits were fluffy without a sign on lumps or being overfloured. The waitstaff showed up to make sure I was happy and made me feel like I was welcome. The bill came AFTER I asked for it, and I watched the place fill up. I will be returning to sample MORE of the menu, and will present a 5th star after I've seen how consistient they are. It was well worth a random drop in visit. read more

Fantastic service, and a simple, comfortable atmosphere. Feels like what it is - a neighborhood bar. There a secret, though... The food is AMAZING. The steak fingers are tender and moist and so tasty. The potato soup is a meal unto itself, and the vanilla bean cheesecake is killer. Friendly, efficient service is the cherry on top. THIS place is one of my husband's and my favorite places to go when we want outstanding prime rib! Wed and Fri eve are when it's served. The cut of meat is absolutely the best! You have three choices for size and lately we've been getting the large because it's fabulous when the waitress brings it over to you - overwhelming presentation! It comes with baked potato (or mashed), salad (or homemade soup) vegetables (which are really garnish) and garlic bread. If you like prime rib cooked to perfection, this is the place. Also, the wait staff are always friendly and efficient. Regarding ambiance - it looks like a neighborhood hangout, and this is where the locals come. No frills, but great. I was in here about a month ago with my mom while her car was being worked on next door. It came highly recommended by the guys at Prairie Road Automotive, including the owner, Bill. It's a very short walk, next door. So we figured we'd try it out. It doesn't look like anything special on the outside. It looks like a dive bar that was in its prime in 1985 and hasn't been touched since. Had it not been so highly recommended, I wouldn't have given it a second thought. The first thing I noticed when walking in was it was actually fairly clean inside. I didn't have high expectations given the exterior appearance, so it wasn't exactly hard to exceed them. Lol. But I didn't thing I was going to pick up any horrible diseases just from sitting down in here. The booths need to be redone, as there's a few tears in them, but that was the worst I found. We walked in and saw menus, so we grabbed two and sat down to start browsing. Our waitress came by a moment later, she wasn't far behind us. Took our drink orders and told us about the specials. She was older and clearly worked in bars for much of her adult life, but wasn't harsh or abrasive. She wasn't overly social, but nothing bad to say about her either. We both ordered the prime rib special and a salad to go with it. The salad was nothing special. Bagged lettuce and dressing. No croutons, tomatoes, added anything. The prime rib was huge though! There's nothing about small portions here. This came with mashed potatoes and gravy and mixed veggies. Veggies were likely a frozen mix, as they had that kind of mushy quality to them. Not impressed by that part. The potatoes were real, and the gravy was legit. I'm very critical of any restaurant gravy, and this was good. Prime rib was cooked perfectly, medium rare. All in all, it was a good experience. I enjoyed my meal. It's big portions, but no frills. It was served in a clean environment with good service. I'm planning on going back and trying the broasted chicken in the future. If you're looking for a good, hearty meal (think meat and potatoes meal) and can get past the dive bar setting, you'll enjoy the food here. read more

I'm new to the Eugene area and it seems that majority of the places I try to eat at give terrible service , but absolutely not the case here today . Amanda immediately greeted me and was very pleasant and personable even with her being a little busy she made me feel important and took my order and within 12 minutes I had my hot breakfast! From the outside it does look like a hole in the wall but the inside you feel like you're in a palace :)!!! Great food and fantastic service . Menu looks good for me to try other meals . The locals all seem happy and enjoy the service they receive from their favorite bartender , Amanda ... I actually tried to eat at 2 other places today and both places I waited 15 minutes before I walked out and never got a "hello "or "may I take your order ! Met a friend here for beer, burger, & to play some pool. It was my first time stopping in this established blue collar bar. I walked into a dated, yet clean & pleasant bar & was kindly greeted by one of the bartenders. The ladies working the bar & tables were all super friendly to everyone that came in. Not fake forced kindness, but honest to goodness sincerity. The staff seem to enjoy their jobs and care about the customers and I greatly appreciated seeing/receiving that kind of service. I have been back since writing my last review. Have not tried dinner again, but I have had the chicken fried steak. I will boost my star up. The chicken fried steak was actually really good. It was made with real steak, full of flavor, and lightly breaded. The gravy is also really good because it tastes home made, and doesn't taste like out of the can, or packet stuff. I hate to say it but this divey bar has one of the better chicken fried steaks I have had. Now I hope that is something that is a continual thing. Because in the past I have grown to love certain rib eye steaks from here only for them to go on a downward spiral. The service is always really good. I really want to give more stars, but will have to visit a few more times, and have my food turn out all gravy baby all of the time to keep moving them up. read more

My Patty melt was great! I ordered my food without salt and it was prepared perfectly! My server\bartender Tasha was wonderful, she refilled my Diet Coke multiple times and my food arrived in a timely manner. We have ordered take out here twice during this current state wide freeze. The first time we ordered cheeseburgers. Had a 35-40 min wait. Inside to pay & wait for order off the side door. Took a few minutes, then we got the food home. Buns unfortunately got soggy in the car and were mushy. Cheese had slid off completely. Fries were good. Overall the food was good. Second time around we ordered burger & fettuccine Alfredo. Was told 20-25 min wait. Arrived to pick up to be told there was not pasta ready so it would be a few minutes. Understandable so I patiently waited... 40 minutes of waiting... finally the food was ready. Once home the bun was soggy, the cheese slid off, and the boxes steamy. To no fault other than take out isn't the best option, but the only option at the moment. Pasta was good and you got soup(butternut squash), veggies (peas & Pearl onions), and garlic toast. Very filling all in all. Love supporting local. Hoping we are able to go in and experience the food hot and fresh instead of having to take it home. Prairie Schooner is in a rough area of town and unfortunately the staff has been ill trained to deal. I used to feel safe going in for food, drink and to play machines. Unfortunately, men are allowed to stand way too close even after being asked and told to go away. There were several homeless people that wanted to talk or ask for money. I'm sure it's fine for a group of guys. Women wanting a evening out should avoid this place. read more

This place used to be really good, now its really bad. I know, I have eaten there way too many times to count. I've been going in there for 30 years. Cal (the owner) needs to hire a real cook. My Girlfriend's French fries were white and limp like a noodle. I didn't know you could do that to a potato. She sent them back and got more of the same. My steak, mashed potatoes, and Brussel sprouts were barely warm. The taters almost melted the butter. We went there a couple months ago the food was poor then too. We complained to the server, and she was all apologies. When she left the people next us said they agreed with what we told the server, about needing to hire a real cook. They also had bad experiences with the food We won't be back for food anytime soon, and will tell our friends to eat elsewhere. read more

We stopped by here recently because my mom used to take us here before she passed away. (Even though when she took us it was almost 14 years ago) Well to make a long story short the last two years when I would come into town she would ask prior to here passing if I had eaten there again. First of all, after walking in with our party of 5 it seemed literally like the music stopped. The dungeon of a bar definitely knows when a out of towner comes in. We waited a few minutes and a waitress took us to our table. Looking to see that nothing changed on the menu or atmosphere we decided to go with the old usual a chef salad, chicken tenders, fries, and a burger. I mean how can you go wrong with that? After waiting for almost 40 minutes our food was finally served. Let's just say we should of took the 40 minute wait to get up and run for the hills. The food was absolutely horrific. It was literally fried and then refried, maybe the cook or waitress had to take a smoke break. Who knows! The chef salad was just cheap iceberg salad with a couple extra toppings. I won't go on about the service because the waitress tried to charge us for five meals when we only had three plus a salad and her customer service skills were lacking to say the least and the price was outrageous for what was served. So take my advice if you want to go somewhere to get below mediocre food, have people stare at you constantly, and basically serve yourself, save your money and go to Hometown Buffet. read more

We ordered Prime Rib and Broasted Chicken. The menu said the Chicken came with fries, when my plate arrived with only chicken the waitress told the kitchen three times I needed fries after 30 min I said we were done no need for fries-apparently they ignored her. The prime rib was like eating leather, not sure how you make that happen with a prime rib. We have always ordered Chicken quesadillas to go from here, I guess we will stick with that. I've been here a bunch, out on Prairie Road, serving the mills. A friend of mine from Country Fair said it had his favorite Reuben in Eugene. He had good taste in dresses, so I thought I'd trust him on this too. And he was right. Good crispy bread, nice proportions of kraut and corned beef, noticeably flavorful cheese and Reuben sauce, with very good steak fries. Last time I was here the meat portion seemed a little skimpy (say it ain't so, Joe!), but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. Reading the reviews, breakfast & Taco Tuesdays sound interesting. I haven't had anything here that hasn't been awesome... yet. I've been every Thursday night, for their taco special (must have! = $1.50 each), for 6 months now. I've also been for many other dinners & breakfasts (sitting there now). The draft beer always tastes good, the food is great, and the prices are average. The crowd here tends to lean towards the John Wayne generation--which keeps it nice & mellow. What a strange place! I'd been here before, since one of my in-laws is a trucker who goes here a lot for breakfast. But this time, when my fellow Yelp friend and I walked in, we found this place practically PACKED. For lunch no less! At a tavern! A sight to behold, I tell you. The place seems popular with men, there were few (any?) women in there, and the men were a mix between truckers, retired guys, and men in their 40s who looked like contractors or something. However, we'd gotten some "inside information" (ok, well, an email from my mother in law with a picture of the shrimp louie), which told us to try this place for lunch. The shrimp looked amazing, I'll try to get her to upload the picture! We went for a double fries combo: The fries with bacon and cheese, and the shrimp with fries. I get now why, when I ordered a side salad, the waitress asked if I wanted to sub it for the shrimp''s fries. There were sooo many fries. SO. MANY. HUGE. FRIES. The fries are thick cut steak fries. They looked beautiful, fresh and perfectly fried. Unfortunately, both of us prefer thin fries, so we didn't even end up eating that many. Plenty of bacon on our fries, which was good, but there wasn't as much cheese as I would've liked. The shrimp were good, but there were only FOUR. Sorry, but for a "shrimp basket" there -really- need to be more than four shrimp. Unacceptable. The service was... well... good, I guess? The waitress checked on us regularly, refilled our drinks, asked us repeatedly if we needed anything else. But she wasn't terribly friendly. No smile, and she kept looking at us a little strangely. I'd almost say with a look of "Why are a woman and a gay man sitting here in a big group of male truckers"? I wasn't super comfortable. Anyway, this place is definitely a lot better than expected, but perhaps we didn't order the right things (should've gone for those fresh shrimp!).
