I cannot stress it enough the gentleness, the care, the loving affection that they showed my beautiful Lexie. Fast-forward to the next love of my life, a golden doodle named Dandelion. She turned 1 in May and has only seen Jessica, and her team, for Dandelion's grooming adventure. I say adventure, because she loves going to see them. She loves being groomed by them. She loves the treats, smiles, and the affection she gets every time she goes to Preferred By Pets. She's literally dragging me to the front door cause she wants to see her friends. My three year old dog tried to bolt when I took her in for the second time. She was also shaking uncontrollably. Neither of these are normal behaviors. I had just moved here and didn't know where else to take her so I left her. Big mistake. The groomer and the owner both chewed me out when I picked her up because she had matting on ears and tail. Her tail was mostly gone, yanked out by the roots. Their rudeness to me was bad enough. The trauma to my sweet girl was way worse. I will never go back. read more

Charlie is my cocker spaniel, and Preferred by Pets is the only place I'll take him. Cockers are not an easy groom. Their ears mat if you look at them wrong, and the feathering takes real patience. Every single time, Charlie comes back looking like a show dog. His ears are clean and silky, feet are sanitary trim neat, coat soft with no nicks or razor burn. What sold me is how they treat him. Peter is the best. Charlie is calm when I drop him off and happy when I pick him up, which tells me more than the haircut does. They listen to what I actually want for him instead of defaulting to the same cut for every dog, and they're upfront about pricing and timing. Agree with the others who talked about the rude staff. Was told in a very demeaning and snarky manner that my appointment had been canceled due to non response to communication, including a text and voicemail. Found the voicemail on my wife's phone but never found the text. She is not tech savvy and ofetn misses communication due to all the spam and political BS. BUt she called the front desk and everything seemed to be fine. They refused to take us and seemed to enjoy it. We showed up on time and could have provided whatever they need then but apparently you have to pass a test to be worthy of giving them your money. Steer clear of this place read more

We have been going here for almost a year now and this is by far the best grooming location I've experienced in San Diego. The prices are really reasonable and the staff is great. Alex is the BEST!! My dog has always been very fearful of groomers and never let them touch her feet but she just loves Alex and seems to really trust her, and they tell me that she is such a good girl while she is back there. We have been going to this groomer with our 2 toy poodles for 3 years seasonally while we are in San Diego. Last Year the groomer was excellent. This year she is no longer there but we were assured they had very competent replacements. We brought our boys (2 toy poodles) there 4 weeks ago and the grooming was ok but we noticed that the reception area was not clean with a lot of fur on the floor.We made a follow up appointment for today. Please keep in mind they have very strict rules regarding appointments and cancellations. the texts from them read as follows... As a reminder: If a conflict arises please contact us ASAP. We have a 24 hour cancellation policy and there is a $50 No Show/Late Cancellation fee for each pet If you are 15 minutes or more late we may need to change your grooming package OR reschedule your appointment and the late cancellation fee could then apply at our discretion. PLEASE let us know if you're running late. And please be prepared to pick your pet(s) up within 30 minutes of completion. This is the best number to manage your appointments and communicate with the front desk person. We accept all major credit & debit cards HOWEVER there is a 3.5% processing fee. Pay with cash or Zelle to avoid this fee. Thank you very much and we look forward to seeing you! We have been going to Preferred by Pets since they opened. Jessica, Peter and the staff are lovely. All of our Pomeranians have come to them (we are on 5 and 6 now), we started at their original location and then moved with them to the new location. Ours dogs sometimes have different grooming requirements and they work with us to do exactly what each of our special fur babies has needed. They have always been amazing with our dogs and been super gentle and kind with our sick or end of life pets. We can't imagine better people or a better shop for any of our dogs. read more

I have been a loyal customer for over 10 years. I made an appointment and forgot to come. First time EVER! Instead of understanding they told me I would be charged a no show fee of $50. I understand with new customers and new policies that would be understandable. But a loyal customer who has spend a lot of money you would think a reminder for next time would be more appropriate. Some of their groomers are skilled, unfortunately some of them are not. Some can't use desheding shampoo or properly trim nails. We attempted to reach out to them to resolve, they said not all their groomers have skills for nail cutting or desheding shampoo and we should wait for manager to return in a week to see "if we have a groomer matching these skills"! Nail trim and desheding shampoo are basic skills and basic requirements of any dog grooming licensing program. read more

We have been using PbyP for our Samoyed for over five years and they do an incredible job. Lucy usually grooms our fluff bomb and she comes out so soft and fluffy, all mats gone, looking like a show dog! Our dog is super high maintenance, geriatric (15.5 yrs) and has a few health issues for which they have been so accommodating, careful, and gentle. My dog will NOT let me near her paws but Lucy works her magic and gets those nails trimmed with no issue. Frankly, I wouldn't trust any other groomer for this fluff girl. read more

Took my baby here for the first time this week. They told me that there was a waiting list and I said that's fine but I guess they had a few cancellations which helped us out and we were able to get taken quicker then I thought! Blossom had only had one other hair cut in the past with PetSmart and they did a terrible job. So I wanted to take her to an actual groomer this time and I had many people tell me to come here. They were so friendly. From booking to drop off to pick up. They are very responsive and well organized! Blossom does have separation anxiety and the groomer spoke to me after the groom and told me how she did and what she did with her. She said she was very sweet but she definitely was nervous. But Blossom came out looking and smelling fabulous! She is a terrier mix and I love her scruffy but my family kept saying she looked like a homeless dog haha so I gave in. Something changed from my first visit. It is very odd that you have to wait outside, almost like they are hiding something. The last time I took my 10 lb poodle mix I was told he was difficult and an extra charge would be added. The way I was told was the groomer yelled out the door as it opened for a split second. I have since found a new place that actually lets you in the shop, the groomer greets us and makes us both comfortable. My little boy was so happy when I picked him up instead of wanting to run from preffered by pets. I won't be coming back. read more

I had a great experience with preferred by pets. I took my 8 month old Australian shepherd here for his first grooming. His hair was getting too long and starting to frizz out everywhere. He got a silhouette trim and grooming, and a free teeth cleaning for his first visit. Everything turned out absolutely great, and I'm sure he was a handful because he can be crazy. VERY VERY VERY rude and unprofessional place I called to schedule an appointment to get my dog groomed and I was placed on hold, that wasn't the problem .. I was on hold for 11 minutes that still wasn't the problem, I decided to hang up and text the number that I had heard earlier because maybe that would be better . So I get a call back and a gentleman calls and says "hi I'm returning your call I guess you couldn't wait long enough" ... Took our Stella there a few days ago and asked for a light "Touch Up" hair cut. Instead they were heavy handed in their use of the electric trimmers and even went down to her skin in some places. (Probably a cost saving measure as it takes less time to just shave it all off). The "person" who shaved her (can't call them a Groomer) has no business being in this profession. Shame on the company's management for allowing this to happen to Stella. She is part of our family and your employees should have treated her with more care!
