I cannot give a high enough rating for this place!! I have a very nervous, 1 year old shelter puppy with long matted fur. Natalie took such good care of him! She worked with him and calmed him down and he looks amazing!! We had a terrible experience at petCO and had to leave before the grooming even started because my dog was too nervous and they didn't think that could handle him. These groomers are so professional and so good at what they do. I was so worried about him but they treated him so well and he looks adorable!! I chose Preferred by Pet to give my dog a bath and haircut based on the context of the excellent reviews I read on Yelp, and I did not regret my decision! (I recently adopted from a rescue group an approximately 7-year-old American Eskimo/Pomeranian with a rough past, and she needed a bath and haircut. My dog, Penny, is afraid of new people and will nip at humans that try to pet her.) I first called Preferred by Pet and explained the situation to them. The woman on the phone was so nice and understanding, and she booked Penny an appointment that week. Well, when Penny and I got to their shop, Penny was very scared, and we (Preferred by Pets and I) decided the I'd see if my vet would prescribe Penny a sedative prior to grooming, so they rescheduled Penny's appointment for the following week. Preferred by Pets' staff also said that that "outing" to the shop was a good step to trying to help Penny get over her fears, which was nice to hear. Last week, a sedated Penny and I ventured back to Preferred by Pets. Penny was pretty drowsy by still alert enough to nip you if you weren't paying close attention to her teeth. Penny was groomed by Jessica, who did an excellent job my Penny's cute "arctic fox" haircut. The front desk staff told me that Jessica was wonderful with anxious dogs. When I was checking Penny out, Jessica came to the front of the shop to briefly talk to me about how Penny did, and Jessica told me that she saw some "skin problem" spots on Penny and told me where so that I can address and monitor them. Jessica was honest with me about how Penny did (she nipped at Jessica a few times), which I appreciate the honesty and her willingness to groom Penny. I've always bathed my other pets, so I've never paid for grooming services, but I thought the cost was extremely reasonable, especially for a "less-than-ideal" (e.g., nipping) dog. Excellent, attentive place. I've been looking for a new groomer since moving to OB/Point Loma. Called and got an appointment same day. They have a new service where (for short coat dogs like my boxer mix) they can go home without being dried and it's cheaper. I was totally down for this since Cooper air dries quickly anyway. NOW A GOOD WOW!!!! I can see from reading these reviews that I am not the only person left extremely upset and offended by the owners immature and disrespectful behavior. I just left PBP and was mad at myself the whole way home for not saying anything to them while I was there. Completely unacceptable! They may me "Preferred by pets" but if they treat their owners like trash--- they aren't going to get any business!!! Wise up!!! I took my dog that I just rescued 3 months ago there, (after being quoted $8 for what I was charged $10 for, less than one month ago for a nail clip, not a big deal but hey...) and was so dumfounded by the disrespect I received from the owner, that I didn't even have the time to react and let him know how rude and childish he was. I asked to watch my dog, since I have never taken any of my 3 dogs to a groomer-- because they dont need one- and because she is a quirky, energy filled pup, I asked if I could watch how she did. Partly for entertainment, and for my own benefit, so I could advise any future groomers if needed. When I asked if I could watch the lady said "No, she would do better if you didn't." I replied "Well, can I peek through the window behind the counter?" And she said ok. NOW- if pets are like your kids, shouldn't you be able to see what is going on? Is it that ridiculous to ask??? So I went behind the counter to watch (mind you there was 5 people working and no one else in the place) and was amused as I watched my girl behave like an angel. :) THEN the owner comes behind the counter to get something out of the register and bumps me instead of using his big boy words to say "excuse me." So of course I said it and scooted over next to the window. Then he goes in the back and then goes out the front door. As he left the lady said "Could you please get out from behind there, he needs to get to the register and is FUMING MAD" ...???!?!?!?!!!!!! REALLY? FUMING MAD? At your customer? For wanting to watch their pet? What did I do to have someone be fuming mad at me? Its freaking Saturday morning and I was in a great mood and very polite to these people! Why not just ask me to move like a normal person would? Further more, he never went to the register again after I moved. MUCH WORSE---- The owner decided to SHOW me he was fuming mad!! As I tried to watch through the shaded glass door, he walks back in and right by me, and damn near pushes me! HE GRAZED MY FACE as I was looking through the door, to go in the back and he doesnt even say excuse me again! So of course I said it again, in a surprised and offended way. I purposely said "excuse me?!?!!" so he could hear, but he was already half way to the back, as he was storming about. What is wrong with this guy? Does he hate his life? His business? Why in the world would you bite the hand that feeds you that way? As I was driving home (I am a homeowner a stone's throw away) I was thinking of how incredibly disrespectful he was, and how he never even made eye contact with me, but had enough nerve to treat me that way. I am a member of the community for which they serve, an animal activist, and a proud supporter of local businesses. I am exactly their target market, and they treated me like I was a problem! This groomer is not the best and doesn't reimburse you if they screw up. They would like to keep everyone on tight time frame and can be rude if you cannot pick up your dog exactly when they want you too. Anyways, for over a year I used this groomer regularly, paying 2x per month for grooming my mini Australian shepherd and they were pretty good, reasonable pricing and friendly service... However, I recently moved to Ventura so I hadn't visited this groomer until this past Friday when I was down in San Diego visiting my brother. My dog was in need of a summer shave and my brothers dogs were getting groomed there so I decided to see if I could get an appt. with them when we picked up my brothers dogs... We went in around 3pm and they were busy as usual but, said they "would do me a favor" and squeeze my dog in (they had already forgot his name) as the last dog of the day. I WAS HAPPY and left my dog with them. BIG MISTAKE. Around 4pm I received a text message from them that he was already ready and they needed me to come in ASAP because they were closing and just waiting for me. I rushed in and paid the $50.00!! for just a shave and bath, I even tipped 10 for the favor of getting us in... another big mistake as I never really looked at my dog before leaving the groomer. After we got home, I noticed my dog rubbing and licking himself all over. I turned him over to check him out and what I saw was repulsive. He was bleeding in several spots and was shaved raw in several spots, with other spots not even shaved. I contacted the groomer and met with the owner and his wife this morning where they apologized sort of... blaming it on a un sharp razor blade. They ended with saying "they thought they were doing me a favor" and recommended some cream to put on him. No refund. No credit. No nothing. IF YOUR IN SD and looking for a groomer...I would recommend you check around before settling on this groomer. They definitely are not preferred by my pet. read more

Although the inside of the building was a little hectic, they were able to get me in and out with no wait time. I felt save and comfortable leaving my babies there. If you have a cat this place is for you! We took our maine coon mix Tessa, who's been having intestinal problems and can get kinda messy. It's an absolute pain to try and keep her clean on my own. We stopped in after a vet visit to see what could be done with our kitty. The groomer was busy with another animal but she took the time to give Tessa a look over. We told her we were short on time and she apologized profusely on not being able to do it that day. We came back in Sunday with Tessa and in no more than 5 minutes she had a hygienic cut done and her nails clipped. I was speechless. Tip included we only paid $20 and you don't need any vet records for shots like you do for some groomers. I couldn't love this place more. read more

We live on the East Coast and needed a groomer while out here for a few months. Preferred by Pets was recommended by the dog wash we usually go to. We have a Flat Coat Retriever that needs a good puppy cut to keep her cool and happy in the warmer weather. Peter was so warm and welcoming from the first call I made just to set up the appointment. When we arrived this morning we met Olivia and she took the time to talk to us about Sushi ( the dog) and see what type of haircut we wanted. The cut came out absolutely perfect and Sushi was so so happy. Unfortunately Sushi barked ALOT while she was in their care today but we worked out a plan for future grooming that would keep her from barking so much and possibly disrupting other dogs. I am very very happy with their service and professionalism and how great my dog looks. I would highly recommend Preffered By Pets!! read more

This place is perfect! Most pet grooming places charge an arm and a leg but not this place - thank goodness! This place is affordable, reliable, has great customer service and is conveniently located across the street from my puppy's vet. This establishment is owned by a lovely couple, who knows what they're doing. For months, I would bring my puppy in just to get a trim around the eyes without an appointment or anything. They gave me free advice and encouraged me to stop by whenever so that my puppy can get familiarized with the place. The other day, my maltipoo was finally ready for her first cut, but with work and everything else going on in my busy, chaotic life, I was late to pick her up. They worked around my schedule and basically puppy sat my dog for a little bit until I arrived from work. The owners are so sweet and understanding. Most importantly, though, my puppy looks even more adorable now, which I thought was pretty impossible to accomplish, and I have Preferred by Pets to thank for that. PbP not only provides natural products, but does so with gentle and professional skill. I have a pure breed Siberian Husky who loves to lick and howl (like a true husky). The whole PbP team is extremely knowledgeable and they understand the different demeanors and mannerisms of each breed and each individual dog. The friendly attitude of the team really impressed me and they made it a point to remember every furball's name that walked in there. Laura groomed my dog and did a fantastic job. My husky, Aden, got shampooed, conditioned, blow-dry, brushing, nail trim, facial, and paw fur trim. He came out looking brand spanking new! The best part: He was so happy and you would have thought he'd been at the park all day with his friends! I took my little Morkie here a few times and the groomers did a decent job, but I had to tell them to cut her hair more and file her nails afterwards. The owner was very helpful and educated me on grooming techniques and Morkie health. I don't like that they blow dry the animals hair while they are in a kennel...but my little baby doesn't like to be confined so I can picture her being very sad in there :( They charge extra if you use a credit card...I think it was $5. My cat was so stressed after I brought her here for a grooming that she stopped eating. The owner's husband could not tell the difference between a small Silver Persian and a huge,bright orange cat and asked me 3-4 times if my cat was the orange one. I was told there would be no dogs there that day and when I went to pick up my cat he came out of the back with five small barking dogs. They never called me so after a few hours I just went there as it was getting towards their closing time and found out then that they had booked two other Persians and groomed mine last not first at the time I made the appointment for. Had I known I would have walked right back out with my kitty. The groomer was rude to me and she told me my cat had fleas. She did not according to my vet who nursed her back to health. Also the groomer got angry when I took out my credit card and informed me rudely they only take cash. In all it was a horrible day for both myself and my poor cat and I would NEVER recommend this place! read more

Peter and Jessica are the best! I have been taking my golden retriever to them for 12 years. I go every two weeks and she comes out fresh, sanitary, nails trimmed and looking good. I always enjoy the seasonal themed bows they add to her long golden locks. They have also given a bath to our older Ragdoll cat who needed a sanitary trim because he was unable to get himself clean as he aged. They were gentle and careful with him and he looked fabulous! My wife and I just moved to San Diego and were searching for a new groomer for our 40 lb, 3 year old collie mix. We chose Preferred by Pets due to the reviews and location, and will certainly return! I swung by one afternoon to meet them and ask about pricing. All super friendly, looks like a husband / wife ownership team. They all swooned over my dog because he's pretty much the cutest pup on the planet. They quoted me a fair price and we made the appointment for a few days later. I ended up having to cancel the appointment last minute because of rain (yesterday), they were totally understanding and rescheduled for the next day. We had our appointment this morning and Chase looks great! Bath, hair cut, nailed clipped, ears trimmed, etc. They even brushed his teeth from free, since it was our first visit. It only took about 90 minutes and they even charged me less than they had quoted since it was an "easy cut!" Sunny was my groomer and I was very satisfied with the job she did. Based on the customer service, quality, and price, I will absolutely return in a few months when Chase is due for another clean-up! read more

I had been coming here for years until today. This 1 star is purely due to the human experience here. My cat always left here looking well groomed, with the price tag being $150 after the last visit. My experience with whomever does the text messaging left me feeling a certain way. I had to wait to bring my cat in due to Covid closures, any time I have made an appt something happens & I am asked to reschedule, which is an inconvenience in itself & happened again today. Of course my cat was overdue for a groom when they first reopened so I anticipated some spike in cost but not double the regular price, and that was after I said I would immediately come get him if his grooming fee was going to be over $250 which is what they texted me. I by no means had $250 to spend on my own grooming let alone my cats while enduring a pandemic & did not appreciate the way the text messenger was pet shaming me as a result of my cat's condition. We are all just hanging on by a thread through these turbulent times and no consideration was given to me or my human tribe or what we were experiencing, just straight to me being a bad cat owner for not brushing my cat everyday. This place is not affordable, not human customer service friendly and I recommend you spend your hard earn dollars at another groomer. read more

I have a pure bred Siberian Husky who's a spoiled little brat. I have taken him to a couple other groomers and have had them return my dog still soaking wet and then ask me not to bring him back because he screams like a banshee and gets all the other dogs going too. He really REALLY hates being blow dried. Getting my dog groomed can be a nightmare and really expensive. I started taking him to Preferred by Pets and they are great!!!! We schedule him to be the first or last dog of the day and they are absolutely amazing with him. Sometimes they even sing with him when he decides to scream his husky scream. He always comes home smelling lovely, coat nice and soft, and he even prances as we're leaving because he knows he looks good. I totally give this place 5 stars and if you have a pet that needs grooming I suggest you check this place out. Not only are the girls here knowledgeable but they are friendly as well. In response to the owners review, I initially contacted the store, and sent them the same complaint I posted on yelp, CC: my sister on the text, so that he could apologize to her directly. While I was promised a response from the owner, I received NOTHING, I let nearly an entire week pass before I posted on yelp. I am in awe that he is using his "apology" as a platform to continue to insult me by telling me to "stop reading" and then go on and promote his business. What an ass. If you would like the public to know exactly what an ass you were too my sister, I'd be happy to write the details in an updated. The truth is, you treat people terribly when you are stressed out. It's a good thing you work with dogs. As for you making it seem I was not a regular customer, I was. I have3 dogs, 2 of which I get shaved 2ce a year. Because I've only lived in San Diego for a year, this was my go to place, up until now. You're response and lack of ownership of the situation is pretty crappy. You give a back-handed apology. You had the opportunity to speak with me privately about my concerns and you chose not too. Don't blame my sister for your rudeness, and lack of ability to provide customer service under "stressful" situations, like passover, easter, spring break or whatever it is for you. If you have underlying logistical issues in your shop; like dogs being able to see their owners during their grooming, deal with the issue- like put up a curtain- restaurants do it to block the wind, DO NOT take it out on your customers. And how can you be annoyed if someone is talking on the phone when they come in? Customers walk into businesses all the time and front desk personal are on the phone or take a phone call. How is it different? Regardless of your personal feelings or issues, you deal with the public, who is paying a lot of money for your services. In response, you should provide a meaningful positive front desk experience. And yes, everyone has a bad day but How rude of you to supposedly apologize and yet at the same time call my sister a "difficult human" when you were the one who was struggling. Maybe you should take a look in the mirror, especially before you write a public response. You've certainly made yourself look like a dick. read more

My grandfather always told me, "if you do what you love, you never work a day in your life." This is the feeling I get about the owner, Jessica. It's an infectious feeling that permeates all the staff and can't help but comfort you when dropping off your little one. The facts: I've taken my 6-year old cocker spaniel to PBP since she was 6 mos old. She goes in 1-2 times per month (spoiled? yes). They know her by name, know what I like, and are very reasonably priced. Need more? I moved to North County for 16 mos and after several failed attempts to find a decent alternative, I conceded that the 40-minute commute was worth it to keep her at PBP! Tip: Make an appointment in advance, especially if you want to take your little one in on the weekend. read more

I walked in here on a Saturday with my Dogo Argentino after playing at the beach she was a dirty mess. With no appointment and a new client she was done and bright white in less then 2 hours for under 50 bucks!!! This is hands down the best groomer I have taken her to! She was so happy normally she bolts back to me and she was so happy she would have stayed there all day. We LOVE PBP! My little pom pom loves going to spend time with Laura and always comes home squeaky clean and looking/smelling wonderful! We like to keep our Pomeranian's hair short(its waaaayy to warm in SD for that huge coat!) and Laura does a stellar job! Our dog has a short cut, but the little soft wisps are left longer around her face to keep her Pomeranian cuteness intact! Consistently, the best cuts shes ever gotten! This was my first time going to any pet groomer. We just adopted a miniature schnauzer/poodle mix about two months ago. PBP was super friendly, and even gave me a courteous reminder prior to the appointment. They made the process super easy, and everyone was really friendly. My dog is also a very anxious one, so I'm happy they were able to handle her. I'm also happy that they skipped on brushing her teeth. They told me that she was just too nervous about it and I'm glad they didn't her force to do something she absolutely refused. She can get pretty scared, and that just tells me they prioritize the animals wellbeing and really do try to make it as comfortable experience as possible for them. I was pretty nervous since this was my first time, but it was a pleasant experience, and my pup feels so clean and so soft, and looks beautiful!
