The maitre d' greeted us warmly and seated us smoothly, no fuss despite the busy scene. I noticed a change in the decor since our last visit--more open seating, giving the space a fresh, airy feel. Our waitress was on point, greeting us with a smile and taking our orders with ease. The meal was everything you'd want from Cajun cooking--plenty of it and bursting with flavor. My wife and I went here on our way back from New Orleans. I saw the restaurant was recommended on Reddit and also it was also praised by our NOLA family. We arrived for lunch and were immediately greeted by our waiter. We ordered the crispy Cajun sprouts as an appetizer. The Brussels sprouts were delicious. Nice and crunchy with a sauce and jalapeños that added just the right amount of heat to the dish. We both ordered a bowl of gumbo. I got the chicken and andouille sausage gumbo. The chicken and sausage were so fresh and the roux was hearty and flavor-filled with just a little kick. The dish came with a tasty roll and rice to add to the gumbo. The ambiance was relaxed and our waiter was great. The restaurant is just a little off I-10 and well worth the stop for those traveling across Louisiana. Just stopping by on our way home and found this place on Yelp. Everything was pretty good, the only that that knocked them down a star is the wait time. We were seated right away but it was more about the wait time for appetizers and food. I ordered the Crawfish Enchiladas, those were pretty tasty. I'm not a huge fan of enchiladas with a flour tortilla because they get mushy, that was the case here but it was still good. My fiancé recommends the Soft Shell Crab BLT.. he said it was great. Great experience here! I had the gumbo & salad lunch special and added a side of dirty grits. The gumbo was good and the grits were okay but the surprise winner of the day was the salad! The chicken was really well seasoned and not dry at all, and the parmesan vinaigrette was delicious. Service was super friendly. My wife seared out this place as we were traveling to Lafayette for a wedding. We had been on the road all morning and we were hungry. We arrived and were seated without waiting. We had these special chargrilled oysters as an appetizer and they were very very good. I would suggest if you live in this area to stop on and try these. I has fried catfish and red beans. This was our second visit to Prejean's. We ordered bowls of the duck gumbo, chicken andouille gumbo and gator tails to go and take back to our campsite. The gator held up surprisingly well for the 15-20 min drive and exceeded expectations both in flavor and texture. The duck gumbo was also a standout, however the chicken gumbo was good but not outstanding. While we didn't dine inside, I took a look around briefly and noted that the place was cleaned up, compared to our first visit several years ago. Not sure if the Guilbeau's actively manage Prejean's anymore, but the food has definitely gone downhill from what I remember in my younger days, or as having a more refined palate. Or I have had so much better creole/Cajun in the years since, this is a case of don't return to your heroes. I had waxed poetic about this place to my wife for years. Finally we made it and the long and short, she nor I were impressed anymore. Crab and corn bisque. Ok. REALLY thick like wallpaper paste. Like an over thickened chowder. Not bad. Just not coat the back of a spoon velvety like I want in a bisque. 3/5. Seafood stuffed mushrooms. Rock solid meh. Very little mushroom and seafood. Seemed to be mostly some breading and no really distinguishable "seafood". Super rich though. 2/5. Fried. Skrimps. Ahhhhh the staple dish of any Cajun restaurant. Not at ALL what I remember from my childhood. Decent flavor but the breading fell off every shrimp. Not as flavorful or well spiced. I dare say Capn' Benny's in Texas or Steamboat Bill's in Lake Charles are far superior. 2/5. Staff. 5/5. Great service and attentiveness. But our server did not know what was in some of the dishes. Menu exams exist for a reason. Still they were super nice so 5/5. Drink special. BOGO house wines and house drafts are excellent to drown out the sadly subpar food. Sadly. Prejean's is a case of never go back to your childhood hero's. Like most things from this era in my life, I am constantly disappointed by them. Live with the happy memories and let the past be. I want to start off by saying this: The restaurant itself is open and nice. My wife and I were greeted and immediately seated. The waitress was very friendly, nice and took great care of us during our meal. I gave it only one star because the food just isn't prepared for me. I can't do spicy and this was VERY spicy food...for me at least. We started with the FRIED GREEN TOMATOES. They come topped with crawfish etoufee, green onions and topped with smoked tomato butter. They started off great but by the second one my sinuses were wide open! My nose was running like water. Spicey spicey spicey. It was plated very nice. My wife had the EGGPLANT ANGELLE for her meal. It was plated very nice. I tried it and didn't care for it. She liked it but it was the same as the FRIED GREEN TOMATOES...spicy. I had FRIED SHRIMP and CATFISH FILLETS for my meal. Again, it was served very nicely. The shrimp had a very good taste and weren't overly battered. The fish fillets were nice and meaty but must have been coated in red pepper flakes because they were really spicey. The fries and hushpuppies were great. Another thing I didn't care for was the tempature of the food itself. I certainly don't want my food just warm but it was just steaming hot when they brought it out and it stayed that way. I just don't like eating food that's so hot I can't taste it. I know this is a go-to place there but it's just not for me. For me it was also a little pricey. We went on a Saturday, taking a late lunch/ early dinner around 5. To start we had gator bites, which was delicious. We squeezed a little lemon juice on them, added a little salt, and it took it to the next level. If you don't do this with your fried seafood, try it next time. For our meal, I had the Raging Cayenne Sammy & my mom had the Inez Crawfish Pasta (I can't remember the exact name, but it was one of the weekly specials). Both were very big servings, and we needed to go boxes after. The Sammy is spicy, so if you can't take heat, stay away. I thought it was delicious, and the ranch sauce helps level it out a little if so enjoy a good spice. I got a side of fries, and they were nicely salted. Another little tip, they have sweet and spicy Tabasco on the table- add it to the fries! I drizzled some ranch and the hot sauce on there, and it was mouth watering. As for the Inez Pasta, my mom loved it. It was cheesy, had fried crawfish on top, and was seasoned wonderfully. She isn't a fan of too much spice, and she thought it great. Her sides were the green beans, along with the garlic mashed potatoes. I'm not a huge fan of green beans in general, but my mom loved them! They were seasoned very well, with bits of bacon in there. As for the mashed potatoes, ORDER THEM. I kept stealing bits because they were some of the best potatoes I've ever eaten. The atmosphere of the place, was wonderful. The wait staff was great. Cooking time was like 15-20 minutes for the meals, after we received the appetizer. Our whole visit being about 45 minutes to an hour. Was in Lafayette for a few days and wanted to try some Crawfish Etouffee. I ate at a few restaurants and was disappointed with their Etouffee. It had decent flavor but was very greasy and did not have full crawfish tails, it was like they were chopped into small pieces. Service was good though. read more

For the past 40 years I have been an ambassador for Prejean's. I have recommended them to everyone that I have known to drive through Louisiana, I live in Dallas and drive to Florida at minimum of 3 to 4 time a year. Planning my trips around being able to stop and enjoy their food. I have visited with Mom an Dad, watched them hand the reigns over to family members, and finally being sold to Tim Metcalf, who I had the pleasure of meeting and discussing his plans for the restaurants future menu. He told me that the Chicken / sausage gumbo and the duck / sausage gumbo were going to not be changed. That was music to my ears, since they were my favorite. Every time I stop there to eat I have always left with four to six tubs of the award winning gumbo for my customers and friends, That equates to about $150.00 each visit. Which the manager would always give me 10% off on. Well times have definitely changed. On my last visit, on 10/03, , The only thing that stayed true to my past experiences was Jonathan, my server. He was excellent. Very attentive. Shared stories of the past years at Prejean's. It wen down hill from there. The award winning gumbo, while still good, was changed. Just averaged. When I ask Jonathan if I was still getting 10% off on the 6 tubs I was buying for my customers and friends in Florida, he told me he had to check with the manager. He came back and said she told him "no". I asked to speak with her. She came over. I told her of my years of being a loyal customer and spreading the word about the restaurant and she repeated "No". It was now becoming "a point" to me. I asked her to call the owner or her supervisor, which she supposedly did. When she came back from the "supposed" call, the answer was still "No". I have owned my own business for years and since when does a "manager" not have the authority to make a simple management decision like this for a good customer or for a customer dissatisfied with their food or service. With the quality of food going down and the poor management skills experienced on this visit, I hate to say "Its just another restaurant" on the highway that is not worth going out of the way for. Most of what we had was really great. The service was above and beyond. I did not care for the Crawfish Nachos appetizer as much as the rest of the meal. Blackened Catfish was primo. My wife's dish the Zydeco shrimp was not as good but still great. I feel like what you get for a $100 meal is a little lacking, but it is in no way bad food nor a bad experience. The restaurant is located a little outside Lafayette. We went for an early Saturday dinner around 6pm. And we had to wait about 15-20min for a party of two. While waiting we sat at the bar for a drink. The bartender's were very attentive but they couldn't transfer the bill so we had to close out when our table was ready. We were seated at a decent table. There are booths available as well. Our waiter introduced himself and mentioned popular items. We still wasn't ready to order so he took our drink orders and gave us time to look over the menu. For an appetizer we ordered the crab fingers. The caption alone had me confused I was thinking something exclusive but it was simply crab claws with a light sweet but tangy sauce to dip. The fingers took a while to arrive, so I'm assuming they are made to order. They were flavorful and cooked just right. For an entree we got the half shrimp and half gator wing platter with fries. The gator was very tender and fearful, so was the shrimp. The fries seemed old as they were greasy and cold. Our other entree was the crab vermilion which came with a corn and tomato maux, green beans and your choice of a side. We chose the rice dressing. The crab cakes were fresh and full of crabmeat. The green beans were seasoned along with the rice dressing. The rice dressing was a bit mushy as the rice was slightly over cooked but hince the word "dressing." The service at the end started to go downhills see had to wait quite a while for our server. We could see him waiting a numerous of tables. Considering the world situation and shortage of workers we waited patiently. Great service and great Cajun food, we will be back. read more

The sauce was a typical creamed sauce, and one of the better things on the plate. The plate claimed to have crab and crawfish in the eggplant as well, though I didn't seem to note any on my plate. The eggplant also looked a little odd, but it was fried, so had a typical fried vegetable taste. HUSHPUPPIES these had your typical hush puppy taste. Not the best I've had, also not the worst. SEAFOOD GUMBO The original rice was very bland. Even when brought into the soup, it had a strange texture. The gumbo itself was ok, pretty smoky flavor with a potent taste.
