We just moved here from Tampa, FL and I noticed the Premier Cakes sign across the parking lot during our shopping trip today. After we had finished shopping at a few of the nearby stores we stopped in around 5-5:30 to check out the bakery. We were greeted immediately as we came in and as soon as the staff finished with the previous customers we were told about all the flavors and about how the cake is made fresh from scratch daily. They had quite a few options available given the time of day it was and they all looked good. We decided to go with the Strawberry Puree cake slice we saw behind the display case that was being transferred from the freezer area to the display. For reference, the strawberry puree cake slice is the dark pink cake with the white icing since I was not able to get a picture of it. We were able to checkout quickly and the staff recommended we wait 10-15 minutes since the cake had just come out of the freezer. When we got home I stuck it in the fridge and we ate it later that evening. It was excellent. The cream cheese icing was sweet but not overwhelming and the perfect consistency. We had the cake with a Pinot Noir at home and it paired perfectly with the strawberry. I will be going back to try different flavors in the future but the Strawberry Puree cake slice is already one of the best I have had. 5 stars for both excellent cake and customer service. read more

My favorites were the red velvet, pound cake , and the wedding cake. I also bought the sweet potato and strawberry sliced cake. They all tasted semi homemade to me especially the strawberry cake. That's not a bad thing but most of them didn't have that from scratch taste. But if you are looking for classic cakes you grew up eating this is the place to go. I stopped by during Premier Cakes's soft opening at their new location--they will have a formal grand opening in late May or early June. I was warmly greeted by Tracey, the owner and head baker, who was pleased that I had found the bakery despite there not being full signage yet (it's # 105). Tracey showed me their whole selection--three different types of pound cake, vanilla and sweet potato cup cakes, and a whole selection of layer cakes--strawberry, vanilla, chocolate, red velvet, sweet potato, etc. Some of their cakes are kept refrigerated but best eaten at room temperatures (perfect for take-out, because my cake had de-chilled by the time I got home). This is a traditional bakery--no frills, just a focus on good, like-your-mom-would-make cake. The space looks great! It features an open kitchen, so you can see back into the bakery itself. Although a lot of restaurants have this, I've never seen a bakery with one! It was really neat. There was plenty of seating. I tried a sample of a mini sweet potato cupcake and it was wonderful! You could taste that a lot of spices were used in the baking process. I also opted for a slice of the strawberry cake--which is a vanilla cake with pureed fresh strawberries added to the batter. It definitely tasted fresh and fruity--a little dense (but that's how layer cakes are--they have to stand up tall!). I definitely enjoyed the slice (and it was plenty for two servings). Also, I'm sorry that the positive Yelp! reviews for the old location have not transferred--you can check out a lot of other reviews by looking at their old page. So I found this place randomly when I was really really craving a slice of cake, and I was not disappointed. It is truly from-scratch, homemade flavor. I came back for the strawberry cake fairly often, and it was always amazing. I decided to order my wedding cakes from there. I was not interested in a big fancy cake with a ton of icing that is more about looks than flavor, so I simply ordered several of the plain strawberry cakes, and set our cake topper on one of them. It was a great decision. The strawberry cake is moist, 3 layers, with just enough icing. I walked in on a Sunday morning 10 minutes after they opened and asked for a whole cake. They told me they could have a chocolate iced (yellow cake) ready in half an hour. I didn't have time to wait. I declined, thanked the gentleman who was helping me, and told him I'd do something else. He was very professional and courteous. As we talked he leaned close and said, You'll regret not getting this cake. I relented. Now, two months later, my coworkers and I still talk about how amazing that cake was. I visited this store based on a recommendation from a friend. The parking in this area is tight, as it is a pretty busy area. This was my first time here, so I'm always a bit leary when it comes to people's recommendations as palates do differ quite a bit in the taste department. I'm one for flavor, richness, decadents, and at times plain ole good old fashion moist deliciousness. I purchased 3 slices: birthday cake, coconut lemon, and lemon. I'm told the birthday cake was good, as it wasn't for me. The coconut lemon cake was ok; it wasn't as moist as I thought it would be, but it was well flavored. The lemon cake was DELICIOUS. I really went for the red velvet, but there wasn't any prepared. Not that it was a recommendation, but I know a good red velvet cake. I would recommend visiting if you haven't. Prices are good. Holy moly ... we have always loved this place but my husband ordered the coconut cake for my birthday and life will never be the same again! He actually picked up a cake from another bakery nearby since he wanted a variety of desserts and ordered the coconut cake from Premier Cakes. All of the guests said that once you tried the coconut cake there was no eating the other cake. I am not generally a sweets person, but have had slices of cake from Premier Cake over the years and it never disappoints. I generally ride to Maxie B's in Greensboro or Edible Art in Raleigh to get delicious cake, amply sliced, and priced right. My family was extremely disappointed in our cake from Premier Cakes. My daughter stated that her yellow cake with chocolate icing tasted like cornbread with chocolate pudding spread on it. I thought, she's being harsh, so I tasted it and she was right. Their strawberry cake with strawberry icing is my favorite I want to say, but then I may be lying because I fell hard for the Hummingbird and carrot cake as well. Their hummingbird is definitely the best "everything but the kitchen sink" cake I've ever had, with just the most fresh taste and delicious hint of banana. I thought that their cupcakes were good, but nothing tremendously great that just stood out. We had one vanilla, one chocolate, and they were just pretty basic. Their main business is in those highly balanced cakes, with just the right blend of spices and flavorings. I think you have to know what you want before you go there, because we had never been. The female Baker and male owner team were pretty stingy and reluctant with sampling. We patroned for the first time while they were just getting started in this shopping center. They seemed to reluctantly give in and let us sample literally a couple of crumbs, and from this we decided on 4 flavors to purchase. They have awesome tasting cakes, and we have been a few times since, but I think that first impression is still a little hard to shake from our memory banks to frequent there more often. read more

My mother and I were referred to Premier Cakes by my sister. First, I try to support Black-owned businesses when I am able so I am pleased to say the staff was very professional and pleasant. The gentleman who greeted us was very informative of the sliced cake in the case. Being a Culinary Chef I chose to try two kinds of cake, although I felt the price per slice was pricey. I have frequented many bakeries as I love a house-made scratch dessert. The cake was moist and tasty however the icing was way too sweet. Love this place!! Discovered it on accident. They sell the cake by the slice and all the flavors rotate based on what's fresh. The slices are priced by size so if it's bigger or smaller it costs a little more or less. Love the atmosphere and localness of this business. Don't hesitate to come in and grab a slice for a quick sweet treat. We got the old fashioned chocolate cake and I would buy a whole one if I had a party. So soft and moist. Each element was perfect. Not happy with Premier Cakes. I went there 4 the 1st time on Saturday. I told the man me n my daughter had not been there b4, We purchased 2 pieces of cake each n he chooses the highest price per slice of cake to give us without asking which piece did we want or what was our budget? The chocolate cake tasted horrible so I ended up throwing out the chocolate cake. That was a waste of money. I did like the Pineapple slice of cake I paid $6 for but the point is he should have shown us some courtesy instead of being greedy 4 a dollar. I will not be going back there anytime soon. I felt that was bad business, what if I didn't have enough money 4 the higher slices of cake he chose? I didn't like he assumed we could pay 4 the slices he chose 4 us. Wow. I received a very warm and friendly welcome as I entered the cafe just 20 mins before closing. I was craving a warm chocolate brownie and that's exactly what I received and enjoyed even more.
