I've buzzed my head since the 90's pretty regularly, but as a woman I have found that you can NOT get female hairdressers to truly give a woman a man's cut. Now that I have cancer, I figured it was the perfect time. I'm not from LA, so I just walked into the first handy barbershop I could find. I explained to them what I wanted and then at the last minute I threw in that I wanted a design cut into my hair too. The whole place got involved, it was a hearty group discussion and some pictures had to be scrolled thru and then once we all decided what was best, they began. I moved to LA 6 years go, I take a lot of pride in my hair so I was very nervous trying to find a new barber. Prestige Barber Shop was the closest to my house so I figured I'd try it out. I was extremely nervous letting someone new cut my hair for the first time. When I walked in I was welcomed by the owner and he said he had an opening so I went to him. I showed him a few pics of how I wanted it. He listened, did not cut too much off and let me decide if I wanted more cut off and I did so he went ahead and cut more. I'd been coming here for years, but after what happened this year I'll never return. The owner stormed in during my haircut and screamed at me to move my car--even though it wasn't in his spot. Instead of addressing it respectfully, he came in guns blazing, then refused to apologize. A little far from my house but worth it. Also guided me with the right products. Hard to know what to put in you're hair as there are so many chemicals. The most expensive haircut I've ever had and turned out to be one of the worst haircuts of my life. Didn't get the guys name but he charged me $60 which is insane considering the terrible haircut. He told me $40 when I called in and ended up charging me $20 for the "face." Towards the end of the cut I asked if he could get rid of all my stubble around my chin and mouth. Mind you I can't grow a beard to save my life, so there was very little to trim off. Something I could've done myself but I never get charged for this so I thought it would be the same. He says nothing about charging me and goes ahead and trims it off. He waits until he's done to tell me it will be $20 extra. The lack of transparency left a sour taste in my mouth, if you were gonna charge me half the price of the haircut for that little stubble you should've told me. On top of that the haircut itself is terrible. Fade is way too high, line up is crooked, and the top of my hair looks like a mountain range with different size mountains. Scheduled an appointment. The barber asked 0 questions after what I first initially wanted. Didn't even ask if I wanted my neckline tapered or squared. Basically gave me a military cut. I asked for my neckline to to be shaved by a razor didn't get it. Ordered food in the middle of my haircut and when they said it would ready in 20 minutes and then HURRIED to finish my haircut. I first decided to check this shop out back in July after my girlfriend suggested it, and let's just say I won't be going anywhere else anytime soon. Mr. B is an excellent barber who pays incredible attention to detail. I've never once felt like my haircut was rushed and the price-point is reasonable for my hairstyle ($25 for haircut with a fade and line up). Street parking is metered but plentiful. They definitely get the job done. Quickly and efficiently. And yet, they left me yearning for more of the basics. For example, all of my life whenever I get a haircut, there is a line up that follows. When i sat in the chair there, i got my cut, and then my barber gave me the mirror to make sure I was satisfied. Only thing is that he gave me the mirror before giving me a line up, which let me know that he thought he was finished with my cut. He was about to undo my cape and little neck paper when i said something to effect of, "Can you line me up?" To which he replied something to effect of ,"Oh you want me to line you up?" Now...he wasnt malicious or anything, and maybe he forgot. Who knows. But it made me realize that the cut was too fast, and there were details that were missing, and in this case, the basics were missing. I left my review almost two months ago. However, today the owner Mr. B decided to contact and insult me through text (PICTURES ATTACHED). All potential or current clients should know the type of business owner and person he really is. Not surprisingly, his conduct has turned even uglier than before. He was upset I told the truth in my review below. The fact he thinks I don't have a right to complain as a black customer (just because he is also black) is incredibly offensive. He then calls me an insecure piece of shit, and goes on to talk about my black gay identity. Completely abhorrent. He certainly confirmed I made the right decision a few months ago. Be wary of some of the "too good to be true" reviews responding directly to (consistent) complaints in the low reviews. read more

Wilfred did an okay job on the fade, but spent a lot of time going over the same spots. I later noticed he did a terrible job on the top. He barely used the scissors when trimming the top and it ended up being uneven and opposite what I wanted. Might be lack of experience working with Asian hair. I recommend Jay, the woman barber who was there the last time, but I'm not coming back because the results are inconsistent among barbers. read more
