Ya know that feeling when you REALLY want to like a place but you just can't overlook a few small things? This was Prestons. Let's start with the good stuff. We sat at the bar one night and returned for breakfast the next morning. There didn't seem to be a lot of options close by, so we choose to check the bar out before calling it a night. The bartender was AMAZE balls (when he was around). I'm thinking he was tasked to do other things as well that were out of site and not behind the bar. He was great. As we sat at the bar, we watched other patrons and would be patrons consider Prestons, one couple even standing at the entrance to be seated while the hostess/wait staff chatted up another table. The couple left. Several other diners waited for service, either watching the one wait staff talk with one specific table or chatting with other wait staff. Incredibly poor service. She and her side kick seemed oblivious. When we returned the next morning and were seated with the parents, the team had turned over and service was better, not stellar, but much better than what we witnessed the night before. The food was lovely. We all enjoyed our breakfast dishes, presentation was great and the flavors were wonderful as well. We ordered two different eggs Benedict dishes and pancakes. Not a crumb left - and these plates were gorgeously presented. The space itself is also really well done. We sat in a booth located behind the main dining room, in a large space. They had a gorgeous wood table, handcrafted from the truck of a gorgeous tree in their main dining room. And bonus, we were at the bar on a Thursday where there was a fabulously talented man playing. So many thing going for Prestons. Keep the bartender and kitchen team and swap out the wait staff. Such an easy fix from the outside. read more

Was there on Friday night. Initially wanted to go to another spot across the street but they were closed for private party. Thought will give this place a try as I walked by it a million times. The menu options were fine - I ended up ordering salmon and a bowl of soup. The service though was 3 out of 10 if I can be honest. The waiter was clearly not having a good day - and came across as inpatient and irritated throughout the service. I was to skip the carb of the salmon and he initially said it cannot be done. I have never heard of this, ever, as I was basically asking you to not put something in a dish - not swapping, not upgrading, etc. He finally reluctantly agreed. But service was just bad. The food was mediocre but in considering the whole experience, and $50 for this type of service/food, I will not recommend nor will I return. read more

I was staying at the hotel, so I went here. I thought I was taking a risk getting something with pulled pork on it while north of Nashville, but the pulled pork sourdough pancakes were good. Food: interesting but pricey, fortunately, it was a business trip. The service was great; the server left a pot of coffee and carafe of water at the table, so I was able to spend my time there more or less undisturbed. I decided to come here to surprise my girlfriend on our 2 year anniversary! We ordered the seared scallops to start. The presentation was great and the taste reflected the look! The scallops were perfectly cooked and were very tender. The flavours were perfect but not overpowering. For the main I ordered beef tenderloin. I got it medium rare and it was perfectly cooked! Presentation on the plate was very appealing. The steak was very moist and tender. We also got a side fries and they were seasoned perfectly and very crispy. Overall this place is great for a small get together or special occasion. The overall atmosphere of the restaurant is very calming and surprising the noise level was quite low disputes being surrounded by people out on a Saturday night. Better than I expected.The menu items are a bit pricey but it was very tasty. Menu: I ordered the fish and asked for it without sesame seeds. I sometimes forget that many restaurants like to encrust fish with sesame seeds but this time I remembered. The fish was served with purple sweet potato, roasted potato, grapes and bacon. The sweet potato had mascarpone in it so be aware if you are very lactose intolerant. I considered asking for a substitution but I was feeling adventurous that day. Great service, bland food. Visited here with some co workers for a lunch date. Upon arrival, we were immediately greeted and sat down by the receptionist. Our server B was friendly and helpful, making sure to check on us every so often. While the service was very good, I have to admit that the food was below average. I ordered the avocado fritters and one of my friend ordered the fish taco which I helped myself to . The fritter lacked flavour and was greasy, leaving a weird taste and sensation in my mouth. I was staying at the hotel and didn't feel like going out in the rain, so stopped here twice: once for a late dinner and once for an early dinner that coincided with happy hour. The restaurant itself is pretty standard in terms of decor. Dark tables, dim lighting, big booths along the side and one giant table in the middle that looked like it was made out of a beautiful tree. Service was ok. Some people were really friendly and others were a bit aloof. I tried the special entree one evening, which was a seafood pasta in a soya cream sauce for $25. Portion size was good and there was lots of seafood (salmon, shrimp, scallops and 2 clams). The sauce was incredible. Without it, it'd have been an average pasta - but the sauce was so good. I came back on another evening and caught the tail end of happy hour - there's a menu with half price items and cheap drinks. $3 for highballs were a great deal. I ordered the calamari ($8) upon the server's recommendation and thought it could have been crispier and seasoned better. The kale and spinach salad ($7) was delicious. A sweetness to the dressing and croissant croutons! Croutons! Made of croissants!! Buttery and flaky. So good. I also tried the Mille fuille dessert ($12) because everyone who worked there said it was the best dessert I'd ever eat. I guess I'm a traditionalist, because this was not a Mille fuille I'd recognize. Puff pastry with chocolate and fresh raspberries - though good enough, not what I was hoping it'd be. Came here for a coworker's birthday during lunch, which was empty. I wonder why... They advertised a 12 minute express lunch but we didn't order from that side of the menu so I can't comment. Food was really good; had the chicken and waffles and it was delicious! Most people loved their food, so the food is not an issue. What the issue was (and it's a big one), was the terrible lack of service! After the food was served, our server disappeared despite our request to bring out the cake we brought in! Also, there's a $25 cake fee which we thought was ridiculous for a small little restaurant. The manager was nice enough to waive it if we ordered some desserts. In total, it took the server 50 minutes to bring out our cake with candles on it because she disappeared and NO OTHER SERVERS would help us, not even the manager?!?! It's clear we are all waiting for something but nobody would approach us except tell us our server was coming (she was not). Terrible management. What kind of a restaurant manager doesn't get other servers to help out? I understand everyone gets tables but the restaurant wasn't full, it wasn't busy despite being prime lunch hour, and the manager didn't help us nor did any other servers. I don't place the blame solely on the server but I spread this lack of service to the entire way the restaurant is run; it must be a top down strategy that causes other servers not to lend our own server a hand. They need to change this. This is probably why despite the delicious food, the restaurant is empty. It also took another 40 minutes for us to get our bill. We all started putting on our jackets to show how impatient we were and even then our sever or the other servers and manager never came by!! Ridiculous. In total, I would come again but only if I have 2.5 hours to spare because that's HOW LONG LUNCH TOOK!! I would give zero stars for service but 5 stars for food, hence the averaged 3 stars in total. Preston's please change your restaurant management strategy. Servers should help one another, not focus solely on their own tables especially when we are on a lunch break and need to get back to work on a timely basis, not after 2.5 hours at lunch! After a long hard Monday (not really), most of the Vancouver dining community came out for the celebration of Prestons new menu. The drinks were good. In addition to their signature cocktail, I had a (very strong) bourbon tea sour. There were some fun drinks on the menu including lemon martinis, a Toblerone chocolate martini, and many more. Somehow, I can't ever imagine Chuck Norris drinking the drink that bears his name, a roundhouse kick of a martini no less. The food itself was fairly tasty. The short ribs were delicious. The gyōzas were scrumptious as well. I was a little disappointed, however, with the pulled pork poutine and sliders. The green tea matcha crème brûlées were pretty sweet. I really enjoyed the presentation with dim sum style containers, take out boxes, etc. It was a fun times in the intimate hotel restaurant and bar. I'd like to try it again. read more

Been here a few times now and very pleased with the food. This restaurant is part of the Coast Hotel and serves the hotel as well as the businesses around them. Had the PBL burger twice now and one of the better burgers I've had. A bit pricey at $18 and it comes with fries (small portion) or salad. We are staying at the hotel and tried Preston's 3 times. Our first experience was okay. We got to the restaurant at 9:55 pm and waited to be seated to no avail. Finally we walked to the bar and found a Server. She sat us and told us we were too late for dinner as she handed us the late night menu. She said they stopped dinner at 10 pm. It was 10:01 at that moment. I ordered the burger. It was okay. Too much bread. And the bread was somewhat cold and stale. The burger and bacon were very good. My wife ordered the crab quesadillas and liked them a lot. With 2 pepsis, our total was over $50. Yikes. Breakfast was good but expensive. We spent over $50 on 2 breakfasts with coffee. A good place for a clean modern look where you can get breakfast, lunch, and dinner. In the Coast Hotel and we had brunch here. We had the Cubano press sandwich which is pulled pork, ham, and Swiss cheese grilled and served with coleslaw and thrice fries and the grilled roast beef sandwich. Sandwiches was really good, coleslaw was pretty good, and the fries look good but are too difficult to eat. I wish they would give you regular fries and for me that really means the fries aren't worth it. The sandwiches themselves were stuffed. I liked the decor and ambiance and wit would be a good place for a business lunch or just a place to grab a drink and some appetizers after work. read more

I was staying at the Coast Coal Hotel and ordered in-room dining from Prestons. I had the PLR Burger. Half way through my burger, I realized it was raw in the middle. Following this experience, I was up in the night vomiting with severe stomach cramps. I'm not sure why the restaurant doesn't check their meat products with an instant read thermometer to ensure they are cooking to safe temperatures. The manager was prompt to call me in my room to offer another burger to be made and delivered but I was completely turned off their service. Apparently they will be refunding my money on my credit card but I have yet to see this appear on my account. I will not be returning nor recommending this restaurant. read more

We saw the bartender/server a few times but he didn't acknowledge us. We sat ourselves and waited while one of our friends went to get menus. We came back for brunch and Preston's has very consistent service, atmosphere and food. Why is this important? There are quite a few restaurants that come with alot of hype.....many of them are hit and miss. There is a little hotel restaurant that stands out as one of my favourite Brunch Spots in the entire city. The service is pretty good....sometimes you might get a really hung over server that cant see straight....sometimes you get one is the best server you ever had. This hit or miss is kind of adventure like. The restaurant is beautiful....not much of a view, though. I will be back for a Rustic Caesar (my favourite caesar in the entire world) very soon. read more

Recently I stayed at the Coast Coal Harbour Hotel on my visit to Vancouver. I noticed that the hotel was connected to this restaurant and their advertised happy hour drink specials, including $3 gin and tonics, caught my eye. On my second day in Vancouver, my colleague and I decided to try out this place. I ordered the avocado grilled cheese with a side salad and she had the calamari which was half priced during the happy hour. The food came relatively quickly and I have to say...it was the best grilled cheese I've ever had. The sandwich was a multigrain bread with avocado and goat chèvre as well as some veggies. It was phenomenal and I even went online to their website to screenshot the ingredients so I can make it at home. My colleague's calamari was superb. The textures were perfect and the calamari was crispy but tender. If you are staying in Downtown Vancouver and have a chance to visit this restaurant, I highly recommend that you do! You will not be disappointed with the food or drinks! Easily one of the best happy hours in the city. I subtracted one star for the attitudes of the hostess and server. Now I must admit that my colleague and I were probably slightly underdressed for the restaurant as we were in jeans and plain tops while the other people around us were dressed business casual. But we are archaeologists and ultimately just tourists staying at the hotel attached. Anyways, the hostess seemed a bit disdainful when we walked in and the server was not attentive. He rarely refilled our water and was preoccupied with the other customers. No worries though, sometimes we, as customers, believe that everything is all about us and that we are being treated poorly when in realty we can be misconstruing a situation. The best part about the place is the fantastic service! I swear, we had three different people coming to check on us and take our order. The entire staff's concern was making sure we are being taken care of. I ordered a $13 cocktail. It was delicious and it sets the price point for the restaurant. Food wise, everything was delicious with gorgeous plating. However, most portions are very tiny. I ordered fried cauliflower and octopus. Being from Calgary, I don't get to enjoy octopus often so it was a treat. My experience was pleasant one. I would absolutely return to this restaurant - especially for the service. read more

Friends of us invited us for dinner at Prestons. My 1st impression on the look and feel of the restaurant was very positive and we were not disappointed with the food. A fusion of West Coast & Asian Mediterranean cuisine made up the menu. We tried the Prawn Gyoza, Chicken and Brie Sandwich with Cranberry Bread and the Soft Tuna Tacos. All very good and the Argentinean Malbec was delightful with all of this. For dessert we shared the 5 Layer Chocolate Cake which was fresh, moist and delicious. We started with poutine, and I also had a small caesar salad. The fries of the poutine were nice, but I don't think they used traditional curd, and the gravy was a little too salty. The caesar tasted nice, but there was a bit too much dressing. As an entree, I had the grilled lamb. The lamb itself was cooked a nice medium rare, but the demi glace was a little overpowering and too sweet, and the vegetables accompanying the lamb were not overcooked, but lacked a depth of flavor. I usually don't consider fries a meal and the healthier among us would warn against it but when they come glazed they are elevated to main course status! Mmm! Nice ambiance, great potential, disappointing food. Four of us visited Prestons last night. I'd been curious about the restaurant since I watched it being built over the past couple of years. The restaurant itself is comfortable, with a nice ambiance and good service. I ordered the Prix Fixe, with Prawn Gyoza with Seared Scallops, Wild Mushroom Ravioli, and for dessert Chocolate Lychee Sundae. The Gyoza and Chocolate Lychee Sundae were very good, the Mushroom Ravioli is not a dish I would order again - overpowering and conflicting flavors not to my liking. Two others at our table who ordered the Prix Fixe with salmon enjoyed their meal, one who ordered a steak was unimpressed as his steak was overcooked and tough. Overall the food was nothing memorable. On a side note, I really dislike websites that pop up music in the background. I'm there for their menu and location information. This place has a split personality: the staff, the decor, and the menu scream "this is gonna be good!" while the food itself is hit or miss. I appreciate that they can veganize their pad thai. When it's good, it's really, really good! But when it's bad, it's bland, kind of dry, and flavourless. I have been here 3 times and had heard the veganized pad thai could be hit or miss but didn't quite grasp the meaning of this until today's lunch. Speaking of flavour, our fries tasted kind of off- like the deep fryer could use a change of oil. My conclusion? This is still an okay place to cozy up for lunch, and the customer service is lovely enough to make me come back. But I wouldn't set Prestons aside for any great foodie expectations. The price point is off the mark if the food is only going to live up to it two thirds of the time. Really liked the food. Ordered the Dineout menu deal (appetizer of either bocco salad or the fried chicken japanese mcnugget thing karaararaa kamakazi or whatever its' called), salmon and chocolate sundae. Chicken was quite nice (my date had that) and the coleslaw on the side and spicy sauce was tasty although a bit red peppery than expected (not a bad thing). I have to say i agree with one of the other reviewers that their menu leaves out some key details - like I kinda knew that bocconcini were those little mozzarella balls (but these were probably like one sliced up). And that the chocolate sundae included a brownie (I thought it was just a classic ice cream sundae). But at least in these cases, the outcome was happy. The brownie sundae was nearly as good as mine (it was dark chocolate yum!) However, it could have used some nuts. Same with the banana bread dessert that my date had. Salad could have used some more pesto but that's ' probably because I love love fresh pesto. Especially if it's done well (which it was). Had the Toblerone cocktail. Again, the description included the ingredients but could have mentioned that they tried to emulate the WHITE CHOCOLATE toblerone. I liked it but was hoping for more darker chocolate. BC salmon was prefect. Would not have changed a thing except there's rice on the side... which is fine but there's not much sauce to mix with the rice. I like to squish my rice with sauce from the meat. Still it was grilled perfectly and tasted and presented well. Date had the veggie mushroom Pasta. Not bad but not completely filling for pasta as an entree. I think they could have thrown some more ravioli in there for the price. Not sure if the portion size was smaller due to the dineout menu....? Desserts were great... just could have used some walnuts to add some texture. Maybe the chef has a nut allergy. Pity him/her. Oh yeah, service was pretty good and attentive. We got there late for dinner but the place was pretty full and for a Sat night there was a decent waiter to table ratio. Finally, after reading Prestons tweets every day, I got to go there! Yay! We showed up late night (around 9:30pm), the place was pretty quiet, we were seated right away. They are open till 11pm. I liked the atmosphere, very trendy, intimate, nice decoration. They have a nice wall that changes color, I thought that was kinda cool!. The service was good, we were acknowledged right away. We started the night with the non-alcohol minty drinks (designated driver!), kinda virgin mojitos, they were alright. I liked their menus, simple, descriptive and not too many items but enough choices for everyone. I ordered the wild mushroom ravioli which I loved!. Great textures, good flavours, good quality parmigiano, good portion, I really enjoyed the sweet twist. The raviolis were perfectly cooked. My friend ordered the gnocchis with the spicy tomato sauce, I guess they were really good since her plate was pretty clean!. We told the waitress that we follow them on twitter and got one dessert on the house. The home made brownie was good, it came with vainilla bean ice cream (yum). We also ordered the cheesecake which was ok. I was tempted to order the matcha creme brulee which seemed pretty original (next time!). We had a great time, our server always checked on us but she was not pushy at all. I would definitely go back! You know what this place isn't bad. My GF and I have been there twice due to the groupon now deals giving you $40 worth for $25 on most weekdays whcih is great when your low on funds. So for $25 she had salmon and I had the ribs and all we had to do was tip on the whole amount. (i pull it up on Iphoenmakingit really easy to save. On a sunny Wednesday night I decided to hit the joints in my 'hood and catch up with a friend over wine and dinner. Upon arrival the server was very friendly and gave me the best table by the window. He also brought me water without me asking for it while I waited for my friend to arrive. The decor is west coast chic and the fuchsia colour and white lighting in the background gives the place a nice ambience. I ordered a glass of the Malbec and was delightfully surprised by my choice. It's hard to find good quality yet reasonably priced wines in Vancouver and think this place has a good selection. As for food we shared Mussels with Thai curry sauce which was accompanied by greek pita breads for dipping in the sauce. The sauce was more on the sweeter side but still very nicely done. The risottos balls with Marinara sauce were cooked to perfection too but the portion size was a little too small. Surprising for a hotel restaurant. I've become a regular here now with favourites on every seasonal menu so far. Also a great spot for breakfast. read more
