Spectacularly cheesy burger! This was my first time at Prime 16 and I was thourghouly surprised by the amount of good quality cheese on the burgers. I ordered "the smoker" with smoker gouda, applewood bacon, onions and mushrooms. The amount of perfectly melted cheese really brought the burger above expectations. What I found exceptional was the cheeses offered for burgers. I intend to return to try the post modern burger with muenster cheese. The burger was cooked precisely as requested and the truffle fries meet expectations. On a side note I didnt try the dipping sauces but they offer quite the variety and I'll be trying some next time. Only three for a dollar! My friend ordered the turkey burger and I heard good reviews. Also the prices are pretty good for downtown new haven. Dim atmosphere with a fair draft selection. I dined here with my sister during a visit to New Haven. The standout of the meal was definitely the truffle parmesan fries! Really crispy fries and the truffle parmesan dusting was perfect! I got the 'Smoker' burger which is a ground beef patty topped with smoked gouda, smoked applewood bacon, sautéed onions, sautéed crimini mushrooms, romaine lettuce, and sliced tomato. There was a lot more potential for flavor overall. The beef patty and the sautéed mushrooms were a bit bland. My sister got the 'Honey Truffle' Burger - ground beef patty topped with swiss cheese, smoked applewood bacon, julienned honey-truffle potato chips, butterleaf lettuce, and oven-roasted plum tomatoes. ***Food Review Only*** Even though it was across the street from my office, I hadn't been back to Prime 16 in a few years. On the way back from a school event, we decided to make a special stop and it was, sadly, decidedly average. The high point of dinner that Friday evening was buffalo fried cauliflower. The heat was just right and my kids would have consumed another portion given the chance. We all had burgers and the standard portions were smaller than I remember. To be sure, all were cooked correctly, nice buns, balance condiments and toppings. Fries were small portions and cooler than lukewarm. Like the fires had been out waiting for everything else. Service was mostly not present as we couldn't ask about getting hot fries as she didn't return until the burgers were almost done. I hope it was just a one off night. Dinner for four with one glass of wine was not cheap. We'll return, not sure when. Now I LOVE a good burger. I mean, next to a solid order of tacos? Burgers are probably my next favorite thing. For Father's Day, my beloved chose Prime 16...as he wanted burgers for his day. So it was us and our three teenagers Something we all appreciated? The burgers were cooked perfectly. Something we all didn't? The rolls (specifically the bottom bun) disintegrate and it's crazy to keep the burgers together - it's a hot mess express. Something I didn't appreciate? The cost - it's pricey. Hubs and I each had two drinks, the five of us shared two pretzel sticks (there's only ONE to an order...for $7 apiece!) And each of us had a burger - grand total of $140. And maybe I'd have felt better about the cost if it was amazeballs. But overall, it was good...not 'great.' Nice staff...though they seemed a little confused on our arrival (we'd made a reservation). My boyfriend and I came here this past weekend for dinner before a concert we were seeing that evening. I made reservations for 2 at 6:00 p.m. We arrived on time and were seated no problem. However, it took 20 minutes for anyone to even acknowledge our table or at least take our drink order. I had to flag down the hostess and ask her for someone to take our order. She ended up doing it herself (I guess they were short staffed). She was very sweet and kind and took our order right away and everything else was perfect. I've been here a couple of times now and this is a great spot to enjoy upscale bar food and a great beer selection. There is a main restaurant section on the right and a bar on the left. We were able to find bar seats easily during a weeknight and were served almost immediately. The beer menu is on screens above the bar and also on a paper menu. They have a rotating tap and a wide selection of food as well. Both times I was there, I was in the mood for a burger so that's what I got. The burgers are good, but messy (maybe not the best for a first date). They are fully loaded and the patty is top notch. Next time I will try the wings. This place is an easy 5 star for it's burgers. They are my all time favorite which speaks for itself. You can't go wrong with any option and even their non-burger items are fantastic. Every time we try a new menu item, we are blown away with the quality and tastiness. My husband always leaves saying "I think that's my new favorite"....about everything he eats at Prime 16! My dad still talks about their chili and wings. Beer menu is on point! Always a mix of local craft beers and they change pretty regularly which is cool. The reason for the 4 stars is really because the service can be hit or miss and has nothing to do with how busy they are. I HIGHLY recommend: + Pretzel bun--I don't even like pretzels but the bun version is SO good and it really adds a whole new level of flavor to your burger. + Truffle parm fries---SO GOOD. + Sweet Potatoe fries--Deliciously crispy and flavorful. + ANY of the burgers. I haven't tried them all but I gotta say my friend and I have never had a bad experience with any of the burgers we've tried. Which burger you choose is really up to your taste (the menu described all the ingredients in the burger so if the ingredients sound good to you, get the burger.) Service is decent. Sometimes there is a very very long wait when you go at night. They do not take reservations so you can try calling ahead and they'll put your name on the list like 30 mins before you arrive. However, they do not wait so if your party is not there when they call you, they will skip you. Definitely plan ahead on a weekend night. Parking is kind of a pain. You can do garage parking or street parking (max 1 hour). New Haven's really strict about parking (we got a ticket when we were late 2 mins. =/) Prime 16 is my favorite burger place in New Haven! The burgers here are great. Big, juicy, not overly greasy, and full of flavor. My fiancé opted for the pretzel bun which I tried and it was amazing. I always appreciate the pretzel bun. While the food was a 4/5, the woman waiting on us was very unpleasant and ruined our experience. She was very standoffish and made condescending remarks towards us through out the service. She was very unaccommodating when we asked specific questions regarding the ingredients in their drinks and appetizers. One of us has allergies to specific products/preservatives and she refused to ask any other staff members about the ingredients. All we got was "the sangria is made with some bourbon and 'some juices.'" We were 2/3 people being served at the time in the entire restaurant, so there was no reason why she couldn't ask another staff member. This type of attitude was present during our whole meal and made us feel very unwelcomed. When coming to a restaurant in this class, a certain standard is expected that was not met. Wowie! I loved my experience at Prime 16!! We went for a late lunch around 2 so it was relatively quiet but I loved the intimate setting and decor. This sounds kind of weird but I was a big fan of the physical menu because the front cover was this soft leather/felt material and I just loved how unique the texture was. Now for the amazing food! I had the Vermont chicken wrap and the sweet potato fries but I also tried the Parmesan truffle fries and it was amazing. I wish that my stomach had more room because I could have kept eating it forever! The price was extremely reasonable for the high quality too. You can get a burger just about anywhere.. but when your signature "tap room burger" from prime 16- tap room and burger restaurant is nothing but a greasy sloppy mess.. well that says something. Wish there was more salsa verde but the meat made up for it! Tender and flavorful, definitely the star of the show. Then our mains came out.. one buffalo bourbon burger.. which was cooked perfectly and very flavorful.. and my order the taproom burger, plain old boring burger. I typically order just the plain Jane burger, it really shows what kind of restaurant I'm working with. This plate said it all.. I picked up my burger to take a bite and my bun was beyond soggy soaked in grease. Wasn't even burger juice.. it solidified on my plate as I was eating. Yuck. It seems like it's definitely the way to go though, especially during happy hour when you can get a very affordable cocktail or draft (half off). They're listed on the TV but note that not all the drinks are happy hour prices. The burgers definitely seem like the star of this restaurant. They're large with multiple special options including honey, drunken onions, aged vermont white cheddar, and crispy soppressata. -HONEY TRUFFLE BURGER: This is a very wet and messy burger. To be honest, it was a bit too wet for my tastes, especially as the meat juices and honey soaked into the buns which made it soggy. It came with regular fries, which were okay. My friends had the garlic ones and they seemed to enjoy that much better. Overall, it was a decent place for a burger, but a part of me believes it's because I picked the wrong option. I don't really eat burgers nor drink beer, the two things that make Prime 16 popular. Although they do have non-burger options on their menu, like sandwiches and salads. I like the vibe of the place, although it can get very busy and packed with people inside. I went for lunch with a small group of friends and I had the grilled cheese and pesto sandwich with cajun fries. The sandwich was very large and I only was able to eat half. It was good, but there was way too much spinach leaves in it...it was like a spinach sandwich with some cheese added. I couldn't taste much of the pesto, which was unfortunate. The goat cheese was good but mushy-ness overtook the whole sandwich. However, the cajun fries were excellent...perfectly fried and seasoned. I like that they have several options for sides...regular fries, cajun fries or a side salad. You can also upgrade to sweet potato fries, truffle parmesan fries or onion rings for an upcharge. I get why Prime 16 is so popular. I'm definitely willing to go back and try something else on the menu. read more

We also had our first date here and ate dinner here with our family right after we got engaged... so it was only natural we returned for dinner on our first anniversary. Bf was craving a burger, and I was not about to enter Five Guys in New Haven again. Our first time here was back in July for drinks and snack, and I enjoyed all the drinks options they offered. Now it was time to try the real FOOD!! ORDER - Kale falafel bites: only come in 3 for ~$5. Super spicy with the sriracha aoli, but I wish there was more bc it's pricey as it is. - Buffalo cauliflower bites: turns out it's just breaded and fried cauliflower with ranch sauce. Didn't taste or see any buffalo sauce. Maybe the tanginess of buffalo sauce didn't come out enough due to the frying process - Bbq chicken street tacos: a bit too oily for me. Shredded bbq chicken was good though. - Modern burger: bf ordered the burger medium-rare and it came out well-done. Nothing too special and pretty underwhelming. Maybe needs needs more spice blend. Bf wants to create his own if there's a next time. Service is great. The waitress checked in on us and filled up our waters. Wish there were more veggie apps/happy hour dishes. Came here on this past Friday night (6/23). Made reservations earlier in the day for 7pm. Due to crazy New Haven Parking and that darn Arts & Ideas Festival, we didn't get to the restaurant until at least 7:15. We were seated at a table on an interesting angle, kind of thrown in there in the front with a clear view of the outside. Also it wobbled, always an annoyance. Our waitress was nice. My husband and I each ordered a Captain Lawrence draft from the iPad that we viewed the list from. We then started with the mac and cheese as well as the buffalo cauliflower bites. The Mac and cheese was $6.95. I guess an accurate price for the portion. Tasted good, but it did have a grainy texture to it. Also we were told that the ceramic it was in was boiling hot. Which only tells me that it was made ahead of time and then reheated, maybe hence the graininess. The buffalo cauliflower bites were $4.95. Now I did look at reviews prior to coming and saw that someone had just posted about these the day before. That they looked like they were the "leftover bits in the fry basket," or something along those lines. I thought it was a fluke and we ordered them anyway. Shouldn't have. Our order could have been described like that as well. Honestly, I think our waitress was a little embarrassed putting it down in front of us, or at least, I felt embarrassed receiving it. Take a look at the picture attached to this review, that exactly how we received it, we didn't sample any until after the picture. They tasted good (they came with what seemed to be watered down Ranch), just wished there were actual florets. Well that, as well as someone was getting arrested right in front of the restaurant for drinking a pint of Popov vodka in the street plain as day. It was like dinner and a free show! Despite, the burgers were taking a little long... After another round of beers, our waitress says the burgers will be out shortly. Before they have a chance to arrive, the manager comes to our table to apologize that the ticket for our burgers was thrown out and they weren't being made until they just realized it...and that he took off 2 beers from our total for the delay. Sweet. He was really nice. Not long after our burgers arrived. My truffle fries were totally awesome and I got some dipping sauces for them too. I loved the maple bacon one and the honey truffle one. My burger was just alright. It had pickled mustard seed on it, but there was like a shitload of it on there and kind of overwhelmed the whole thing. I ended up eating half and then scraped them off of the other half and didn't eat the bread as a lot of them stuck to that too. It was cooked well though. Best place to get gourmet burgers in New Haven! I ordered the wild mushroom + garlic burger, and wow, it was an explosion of flavor. To my surprise, the hoisin sauce added a nice flair and the truffle aioli added great undertones to the overall taste of the burger. A friend ordered the truffle-Parmesan fries and they-were-to-die-for. 10/10 would recommend. You get to choose 3 dipping sauces from a wide variety (how fun!). She also ordered buffalo skewers from the Happy Hour menu, which turned out to be pretty standard. Another friend ordered the honey truffle burger and she enjoyed it! I ordered take out from here (Uber Eats) and it was pretty okay. They were able to make vegan substitutions for the Impossible burger they serve here (used a pretzel bun). The burger was...fine? It wasn't anything to write home about and if anything had a weird film of grease on it that didn't taste that great. Fries weren't hot but they had promise, I could tell they were crispy even though they were slightly warm by the time I received them. I came with my grandfather and my 9 year old cousin who are both picky eaters, and our waitress was able to provide samples of 4 different beers so my grandfather can find one similar to a Bud Light and was able to give my cousin a custom order off the kid's menu. I got the Cowboy burger with a side salad and IPA and all were delicious! Didn't need sauces or anything to supplement the flavors. My wife and I came here for burgers and beer. That is exactly what we got, and they were both superb. Goal set; goal achieved. 5-stars. Simple as that. My wife had the patty melt, I had the Hawaiian burger, and we both got two of the darkest beers on tap. Everything was excellent, including the service, and we left very satisfied. The lighting is kind of dim, which we really dig. It made for a nice and comfortable environment. My only complaint was that the booths in the bar were not particularly sturdy. Any movements the people in the booth behind you make end up pushing on your booth-back. I won't sweat this though, we would just sit somewhere else next time.
