3 meat platw with ribs, brisket, and pulled pork with potato salad and cornbread
    Rhett B.

When I moved to Valparaiso, I had to search for BBQ joints. Prime Smoked Meats were highly recommended. It is very small but it is beside my university! You can smell the BBQ when you get out of your car! The owner's name is Bob and he takes your order. He also asks for your name so he can make a connection with you, as well as, not to confuse your food with anyone else's. His father was from Texas so I am guessing his dad taught him a few things about BBQ. I ordered the 3 meat and I waited for a long time. But when they brought my food, it was clear why I had a 10 minute wait. As DJ Tanner would say, Oh Mylanta! This was a 3 meat plate....not meant for one person haha I had 8 ribs, 1/2 pound of brisket, and 1/2 pound of pork. No wonder I had a long wait, but compared to what I got for $25, it was a steal. All of the meat was phenomenal! I still have some in the fridge for another meal or 2. The ribs had a glaze and were almost fall of the bone. The brisket was moist with a good mix of fat and a black pepper bark. The pulled pork was soft, tasty, and had a little mix of burntness mixed in. I chose potato salad and cornbread as my sides. The potato salad was the best kind - the sour cream conglomeration baked potato salad. The cornbread was a loaf that came with jalepeno jam, which I have never had before, and would love to have more. It also came with honey butter. There are 3 sauces - Texas Ranger, Hog, and 100. All are primarily vinegar/ketchup base. The sauces weren't bad but none really made me say wow. The Texas Ranger has a bold, almost bitter taste. Absolutely not sweet but the Hog has some sweetness to it. The 100 is the hot but it is like a 3 on a heat scale of 1 is mild and 10 is you are going to fry. My hopes were dashed thinking that a Texas style BBQ joint would have sweet tea in Indiana and nope, that's just a dream! Come on! Sweet tea is the best beverage to go with BBQ and it's simple and cheap to make. Despite my never-ending quest for sweet tea in Indiana and the sauces being adequate, the meat itself makes up for it to label Prime Smoked Meats a 5.

We ordered the 2 meat plate with brisket, pulled pork, w/ the hog-warsh sauce, sides of sweet potato tots and cole slaw. The portions were perfect size for two people. The meats were both tender and flavorful. The sweet potato tots were AMAZING. The coleslaw was decent, but didn't have too much flavor. The hog warsh sauce was very sweet but had a nice vinegar taste as well. The place was clean and staff were very friendly and personable. Would definitely recommend this restaurant if you like BBQ.

    Sooooo good!

This is an easy 5 stars. I have driven by this place many many times vowing to go in as it always smelled so good. It didn't disappoint. We got the pulled pork and brisket with a side of fries. We got a couple of sauces to go with it too. We also grabbed a couple of beers which happened to be 1/2 priced that day. The meat was all tender and had really good flavor even without sauce. We were checked on several times by friendly staff that made sure we were enjoying our meal. We sat by the window and watched Lincolnway traffic go by. If you haven't slipped in here to try the prime meats, do so. You'll be happy you did and maybe ask yourself why you didn't try it sooner. My only disappointment was that I had not tried this sooner.

My husband already started into his, along with his coleslaw.

I highly recommend this for a stop. I ordered a pork sandwich that had jalapeño jelly on it and was offered a side of hot sauce. I took the hot sauce., But I didn't put it on my sandwich because it would've drowned out the flavor of that jalapeño sauce. My husband had a brisket sandwich and he devoured it with along with the coleslaw. It was a blue velvet with blue cheese. I opted for the potato salad and that was outstanding. I doubt I'll ever come back here again because I'll probably never be in this part of the country again.

De-licious ! . Bought 2, 3 meat platters and tried a bit of everything. Not one bit disappointed. Best corn bread ive had in years. Brisket was great, my wife's favorite. I'm at a toss up between the shrimp or the sausage. Coleslaw has a touch of kick. The pepper jelly and sweet butter was a great addition to the cornbread. Great experience, great service. I understand the chef, Jason, has a strong culinary background, and his father is the friendliest counter man I have met in town. I can't say enough about how much my wife and I enjoyed our meal, and plan on coming back often to work our way thru the entire menu.

You can smell it even before you enter the place, greeted with the most hospitable folks, their passion for food reflects in every dish! Jammin wings, spicy and delicious, brisket was to die for. There is a secret spice in the dry rub wings, it's absolute Magic!

AMAZING FOOD AND SERVICE!!! We were in town dropping our oldest off for his Freshman year at Valpo U and decided we would take him out to lunch for one last meal with us and we picked this joint! We all loved every dish we had: brisket; ribs and more! Meat was perfectly tender, sidewinders were the best potato side dish we've ever had. The leftovers we had a few days later and were just as delicious as the first day. The staff were amazingly helpful and demonstrated great hospitality for non-locals. Thank you for being so welcoming and we will definitely make it a point to do lunch there every time we are at the university!

It meet many of my requirement for BBQ, including I can smell BBQ from outside. Disappointed did not get to try brisket but wings were good, potatoes salad, & scotch eggs were yummy. They were nice to make one of my favorites, fried pickles! Will be back!

I love a great wood fire pizza and this place is excellent. Small with a few tables, but filled with so many choices for both pizza, other items, and drinks. Love that they have a great spot to sell out of a window to those visiting the park area for events (SMART). The choices for pizzas had me wanting all of them, but I finally settled on the Sticky Finger and the Joker. I was so impressed with the Sticky Finger that I still think about those flavors all together. It was a perfect fit for my palate and I loved it. The Joker was also great and the hubby loved it. We had a peach old fashioned to share (needed that before busting our butts on the ice rink, liquid courage) and the staff was excellent with keeping our waters filled and making sure we were well taken care of. PROS: Great spot downtown, next to event center areas Wonderful choices to fit all tastebuds in pizza choices Cocktail choices that are fun CONS: Parking, at the center near the ice rink (you can walk there though)

Huge stone pizza oven that they make so many delicious menu items in. We ordered the mixed greens salad with dried apricots, goat cheese & almonds. It came with a balsamic & oil dressing. The container was too small for the salad. It was difficult to add dressing without losing half the salad. I shook up the dressing, but the balsamic vinegar was stuck to the container. They gladly gave me another dressing. Pizza was great & so was the crispy crust. We got the roasted corn pizza. So delicious. Fresh cilantro & jalapeños. It tasted like the herbs & veggies were just picked. It's small, so sized for 1 unless you get more to eat. The key lime triffle was so good. Homemade whipped cream. Pound cake, & key lime filling was rich, but refreshing. Triple X root beer hit the spot too. We didn't have any cocktails, but the menu had many different kinds that sounded amazing.

We had to occasionally wait to ask for items such as plates for the appetizers. DRINKS- Old, sour, flat beer. Maybe the keg lines need to get cleaned out? Maybe the beer is just old? I don't know what it is but it just didn't taste right on tap or even in the can. Had a pungent with no carbonation taste to it. At least my mom liked her red wine. FOOD- Overall just alright and average. Seems to be a hit or miss. Calamari- Rubbery and hard to chew. I think it was over cooked Oysters Rockefeller- Tasted like a puke ball. There was only 5 of them. I couldn't even taste the Oysters as it was overwhelmed by other flavors. Tasted like buttery breadcrumbs. Chicken Noodle soup- Was told it is the "best" in Porter County. I got a cup. It was good but only half way filled. I think it needed more chicken. Chicken Parmesan- Sauce could have been better. Pasta was good Sausage and Mushroom Pizza- Thick raw crust on the bottom! Doughy and frozen pizza quality. The pizza looked good on the top but the crust on the bottom tasted raw and mushy. My brother said it was worse the a veggie lasagna from Gordon Food Service which we never even finished eating all of it. PRICE- Over priced for a "fancy" higher class restaurant. The bill was $95 for 2 appetizers, 2 entries and 4 beers and 2 glass of wine. How can this be a scratch kitchen with such a wide and diversified menu?
