Prime Smoked Meats definitely knows how to smoke a brisket. The meat was flavorful and had a smoke flavor. The sidewinder fries had good seasoning and a great crunch. Dipping in liquid gold (cheese sauce) was a nice touch. The coleslaw had a good flavor and good crunch. White bread, pickles, and onions are available on the side. Drink options are canned sodas and bottled water. There are lots of interesting sounding sandwiches available too. Service was good. The dining area is small but had a variety of seating options. Overall I liked it. My only dislikes were just personal preference. I prefer a sweeter, less vinegary bbq sauce, and I like a finer cut on my cabbage in coleslaw. read more

I really enjoyed eating here. The menu isn't as broad as some bbq places in valpo, but I think that's a good thing because what they do make is excellent and by far the best in town. They have pulled pork and brisket and both are spectacular. Their sides are so good! Sidewinder fries with 'liquid gold' cheese, and sweet potato tots are awesome. There's three house made bbq sauces to choose from and I suggest you ask to try all three. They're each unique and delicious. Make sure you try the cornbread if you like that sort of thing! It comes with salted honey butter and jalapeño jam and it's all house made and very very good! The restaurant is small, both the seating area and the kitchen. When I moved to Valparaiso, I had to search for BBQ joints. Prime Smoked Meats were highly recommended. It is very small but it is beside my university! You can smell the BBQ when you get out of your car! The owner's name is Bob and he takes your order. He also asks for your name so he can make a connection with you, as well as, not to confuse your food with anyone else's. His father was from Texas so I am guessing his dad taught him a few things about BBQ. I ordered the 3 meat and I waited for a long time. But when they brought my food, it was clear why I had a 10 minute wait. As DJ Tanner would say, Oh Mylanta! This was a 3 meat plate....not meant for one person haha I had 8 ribs, 1/2 pound of brisket, and 1/2 pound of pork. No wonder I had a long wait, but compared to what I got for $25, it was a steal. All of the meat was phenomenal! I still have some in the fridge for another meal or 2. The ribs had a glaze and were almost fall of the bone. The brisket was moist with a good mix of fat and a black pepper bark. The pulled pork was soft, tasty, and had a little mix of burntness mixed in. I chose potato salad and cornbread as my sides. The potato salad was the best kind - the sour cream conglomeration baked potato salad. The cornbread was a loaf that came with jalepeno jam, which I have never had before, and would love to have more. It also came with honey butter. There are 3 sauces - Texas Ranger, Hog, and 100. All are primarily vinegar/ketchup base. The sauces weren't bad but none really made me say wow. The Texas Ranger has a bold, almost bitter taste. Absolutely not sweet but the Hog has some sweetness to it. The 100 is the hot but it is like a 3 on a heat scale of 1 is mild and 10 is you are going to fry. My hopes were dashed thinking that a Texas style BBQ joint would have sweet tea in Indiana and nope, that's just a dream! Come on! Sweet tea is the best beverage to go with BBQ and it's simple and cheap to make. Despite my never-ending quest for sweet tea in Indiana and the sauces being adequate, the meat itself makes up for it to label Prime Smoked Meats a 5. read more

I've had plenty of Texas BBQ's and this was just odd. We were there for a Tuesday lunch, and maybe this is not normal but they reheated our brisket on a flattop after chopping the hell out of it. It looked more like pulled pork than brisket. And the raw onion, slices of bread and pickles was an odd touch. I didn't ask for to make a sandwich. This is an easy 5 stars. I have driven by this place many many times vowing to go in as it always smelled so good. It didn't disappoint. We got the pulled pork and brisket with a side of fries. We got a couple of sauces to go with it too. We also grabbed a couple of beers which happened to be 1/2 priced that day. The meat was all tender and had really good flavor even without sauce. We were checked on several times by friendly staff that made sure we were enjoying our meal. We sat by the window and watched Lincolnway traffic go by. If you haven't slipped in here to try the prime meats, do so. You'll be happy you did and maybe ask yourself why you didn't try it sooner. I took the hot sauce., But I didn't put it on my sandwich because it would've drowned out the flavor of that jalapeño sauce. AMAZING FOOD AND SERVICE!!! We were in town dropping our oldest off for his Freshman year at Valpo U and decided we would take him out to lunch for one last meal with us and we picked this joint! Absolutely delicious! Best brisket outside of Texas in the Region. They do a fatty brisket that just melts in your mouth. The ribs fell off the bone. Honestly you don't even need bbq sauce which is the mark of good bbq. You also have to give the cornbread a shot. I'm not a cornbread fan but I enjoyed this one. It's soft and with a touch of butter is just delightful. Unfortunately there restaurant is small and not too conducive for dine in especially if you have a big group. I'd kill for them to open a sit down restaurant where I could have a beer with the meal. That being said, it's not a draw back as the food is excellent. Finally got to try this establishment and was not disappointed. The staff is very friendly, definitely has a southern feel of hospitality. I ordered the pulled pork and 1 sausage link and the portions were very generous. The sausage was smoked to perfection and was everything you would want in a link. The pulled pork is probably some of the best I've ever had. No need for sauce, there were nice pieces of bark mixed in which is my favorite part. Served with a few slices of fresh white bread, pickles, and onions. I will be back when I have a chance. Bumped into this place as I was wandering through campus and smelled the BBQ. Had the brisket and the meat was excellent. I also had the potato salad and wasn't the flavor I was looking for so not something I would get again. I recent review rated it highly so it may just be a preference thing. The meat is great, the sauce is Texas style vs. KC style. I prefer KC style but this place is still quite good. As usual with BBQ, it's not a cheap place for lunch but worth a stop in.
