Went out to celebrate. Made a reservation. At first I was disappointed to be sat at the bar near the back of the seating area, but I was in for a surprise. We had front row seats to the chef's working kitchen space! What a thrill it was to watch these artisans at work! Our food was delicious! There were no leftovers! We had a couple cocktails, but the bar got backed up or something and at one point it took a while for us to get our drinks. The staff was very apologetic about the mishap. Bottom line: don't come here- not authentic Italian food, and everything is super greasy. My friend ordered pizza and I ordered the smoked salmon pasta. My pasta was disgusting to be honest... the cream was bland and super greasy. I had an upset stomach after 5 minutes of eating it and couldn't finish half of it. My friend didn't like her pizza at all and said hers was awful too. The waiter came by and noticed we didn't finish but didn't bother to ask how our food was. They also charge 18% service charge automatically even though the service wasn't that great. This place has KILLER food! We have been waiting to find a place like this in the south end for over 4 yrs! We have been here twice now and it is now our #1 go to restaurant for date night! Their rib eye is a fantastic value, for $38 you get a top notch steak, date I say better than El Gaucho, with the most amazing fried Brussels with a balsamic reduction and sage potatoes au gratin! Super good! We also tried their pork chop and it was fantastic as well! We tried their pizza and it is the best around, by far! Not the largest mind you, but certainly enough for one person with maybe a slice or two left over. Their Caesar salad is really good and so are their deserts. Literally go ANYWHERE else! Unless, you enjoy being disrespected and having your food made with hate. There are several other restaurants that are way better than this one. My husband and I have been here a handful of times and it was good overall, until last night. There are 2 good waitresses there. One is a mature lady with cool glasses and short hair and the other one is a bit gothy with sparkly eyes. We did not get either one. We got Ashley. Ashley did not care to write our order down. I hate that. I am not impressed with wait staff trying to memorize my order. They forget something every single time! She had an attitude and when she recanted on her attempt to make the order right, because, of course, she did not give my wishes to the kitchen correctly, she sent over the owner instead. What a coward! The owner had a serious attitude as well. They did not make the order right. They did not accommodate my wishes. They did not even apologize. So good! Came here for NYE dinner and it was great! For starters I got an elderflower sour and my fiancé got a beer on tap. The elderflower sour was not too sweet but not too tart either, it was perfect! We got a classic pizza to start! The crust was crunchy but soft in the middle, the sausage they use is flavorful. The pizza does have chili flakes, so it does have a bit of a kick! For entrees we got the roasted chicken and lamb shank. The lamb was a little fattier than expected but still flavorful, it matches well with the polenta and carrots that accompany it. The roast chicken definitely takes the cake for the better entree! The roast potatoes, pancetta and broccoli that come with it we're perfectly crunchy and flavored. The portion is huge, this is definitely a meal that can be shared between two people. Lastly for dessert we got the bourbon chocolate cake and gelato. The chocolate cake is extremely rich. It was tasty but I probably will not order it again. As far as ambiance this place is a great date night spot. We came on NYE so most people were dressed up. The parking is ample on the street and on the residential side streets! This is a conflicted 4-star review, where by "conflicted," I mean, "that wasn't so good, I should just give it 2 stars," except when I mean, "well, actually, it was okay, I should give it 3 stars," but all in all, I am pretty sure that I mostly like it and therefore think, "I mostly like it, and want to give it 4 stars, but I am 100% sure that my girlfriend doesn't like it as much as I do, and would rather just give it 3 stars, or perhaps only 2 stars, because even though I liked my food, she thought hers was either very bland or way, way, way too salty." That was a run-on sentence. Drilling into some specifics, for those of you who are still reading this and haven't deleted me from your "Friends" list: I have enjoyed several things on various visits here, although the menu rotates so some of them may not be around anymore. The cauliflower appetizer (spiced/herbed cauliflower with 3 dipping sauces and yogurt) is outstanding. The spaghetti nero (squid ink spaghetti with clams) is one of the best restaurant meals I can call to mind, and certainly the best pasta dish I've had, period, done and done. (And it seems to have rotated off the menu! Dammit.) The cocktails are innovative and very well executed, and they do classics well also. The specialty cocktails have all been great (the boulevardier is my favorite), though they'll set you back $10...it's not the worst $10 you'll ever spend though. They also make thin crust pizzas in a kiln, and...well, my girlfriend got the margherita a few days ago, and she was right--that was about as flavorless as it gets. Perfectly baked, etc., but as dull as Dully Dullerson from Dullville on the dullest day of the year. Service has been uneven. We have had a couple of servers who have been fantastic and sincere, and another that seemed to totally forget that she was at work. We've had a couple of chances to sit at the back bar where we could watch the cooks prepare the food on the other side of the glass, and that's been pretty interesting...it's cool to watch a group of cooks work through a dinner rush. Place is not very big, they opened the garage style windows since it was nice and sunny out. Very calm, relaxed, environment. I had dinner reservation tonight at 5:30 and I showed up at 5:10 and they were able to seat me right away even though the other member of my party was not there yet. I thought that was great because most places will not seat you without your whole party there. When I sat down they promptly brought me two glasses of water and the menu. After two minutes of sitting the server came over and was very friendly offer me a cocktail while I wait and I got the Moroccan which was delicious. When the other person in my party arrived we order the calamari appetizer which was fantastic!!! Then we shared a Caesar salad And at this point I realized it was getting a little steamy/stuffy in the restaurant. We both then order the pork chop which was cooked to perfection and was served with yummy yam hash. After that we both got two desserts. When it came time to pay I pulled out my discover card but the serve explained that they do not take discover. I love this neighborhood eatery. Nice staff and cozy interior. The food is stellar. However, they charge an 18% service charge to your bill (I guess as a tip replacement). I like the flexibility to assign my own tip rate (typically 20% or even more for great service). We do not go to Primo very often because of the service charge. read more

We came for dinner and server was great, food was prepared quickly and everything tasted delicious. I got the salmon which was served with asparagus in a riviera sauce (tomato-based) with a kalamata mixture on top, a side of focaccia bread and the cauliflower appetizer to share. Hubby got the New York strip steak served with fried Brussels sprouts and gratin potatoes. The focaccia bread was excellent. Clearly homemade, amazing texture and perfectly salty, served with balsamic vinegar. The roasted cauliflower came with grilled flatbread (some of the best I've ever had!) and four dipping sauces (in order of my favorite): harissa, hummus with preserved lemon, Greek yogurt and piquillo (almond-based). My salmon was flaky, with a light crust on top, not overcooked, and the saltiness from the olives tied everything together. I took a bite of hubby's steak - and though we both prefer rib eye (they were out - I think there's a nationwide shortage), the steak was cooked rare just the way he ordered and seasoned well. No skimping on salt on any dish that we were served! Highly recommend if you're looking for a relaxed meal and okay with splurging a little bit. Plenty of street parking nearby, and located right on 6th Ave with people watching available if you are seated near the main sidewalk. read more

This place looks like it has great food. However, my party of four never got a chance to find out. We, party of four, came in with one hour and ten minutes until a concert a few blocks down. Seating was fast, there were plenty of tables open. We picked out drinks and entrees immediately. It was a very long wait before our drink orders were taken. During drink orders, we talked about specific food orders and pairing our drinks with them. We tried to order food at the same time, but our waitress just walked away as my husband was speaking. I think maybe she was just moving fast and didn't hear him? Our drinks came out, and again our waitress disappeared before we could order. So we sat and chatted. Fast forward and all four drinks are dead empty, and our show is starting in nine minutes. We were starving. There were many empty tables in the restaurant. Our waitress finally came back around, eyed our empty drinks, and told us about the specials. We had to tell her that, sorry, we had to go now. To her credit she apologized, but we went to our show starving while in a half-empty restaurant for over an hour. It was a real shame and I'll never be back. read more

I've frequented this company for ages, back when this restaurant was down the street!! Our favorites comprise of the creamy polenta and Crispy Brussel sprouts!! Oh wow. I don't find myself in Tacoma often, but I'm glad that I dined at Primo Grill. I stumbled upon Primo while searching for reservations for 7pm in Tacoma on OpenTable and Primo just happened to have room. I've always believed everything happens for a reason, and there's a reason I found Primo. The restaurant has a great vibe! Very casual but also high quality food and service. Diners tonight ranged from families with children, to groups of friends enjoying their Friday evenings. Very positive and upbeat. The restaurant is fairly large, but yet feels like a very private experience when seated. I believe they are a Mediterranean, Italian, and northwest fusion of sorts. They support local farm to table and they list their local providers on their menu. The menu is not super expansive, but depending on your diet, nutritional restrictions - it looks like there's something for everyone. My service experience was excellent. Friendly and knowledgeable and came at the right time. I never found myself needing to wave someone down, she knew what she was doing. I regret not getting her name and I typically pull the manager aside to commend my server on his/her service. I'll find myself here again in the future and will definitely follow up. For starters, ordered the following: Kamilche Mussels, chive curry cream - OMG. If you like Mussels, you know when you get high quality vs low. Every mussel served was fresh and plump...I mean huge. Mussels are filter feeders, and sometimes you bite into one and you just know it's been feeding on some rank stuff, but these were amazing. And the broth...In the words of Dave Niehaus- MY OH MY! They recommend a specific bread (it's spacing my mind), but say yes. Soak up that broth with the bread. I couldn't get enough! Spicy Moroccan shrimp - came kebab style with little baby potatoes on a bed of what I thought was a new twist on a Tzatziki sauce with a side of Naan or some type of flatbread. Another hit out of the park. (Excuse my baseball references here LOL). Grilled over open flame, quality shrimp, not frozen...just amazing. For my entree, or what they refer to as the Big Time, ordered the following: Grilled Lamb Chops, sumac, cumin, pan roasted Walla Walla onions, cous cous, and preserved lemon - If you're a hungry hungry eater, the portion is smaller, so I'm glad I ordered 2 starters. Medium rare and cooked perfectly on the bed of cous cous. I'm not a huge fan of cous cous, but I ate EVERYTHING. It was the PERFECT portion and PERFECTLY SEASONED! One of the things that I can't stand is when dishes are over seasoned and especially over salted. NOTHING that I ordered tonight was over seasoned and over salted. Typically, I'll find myself chugging water after a nice meal - but tonight...all I can think about is going back to Primo Grill. First time back since the pandemic and had booked a standard table. When we got there the very grumpy hostess told me there were no tables and we had to sit at the bar. Fine. Bartender was very personable but slammed. We were seated next to the hostess station so I was splashed a few times. We were able to scoot down a bit but I had to keep turning to avoid being bumped. Again, fine. Our drinks came and they were ok. I'd requested the gin for my Negroni but the ratios were a bit off. My dining partners drink was made with bottom shelf whiskey and not good. It took another 15 minutes for us to get asked about food. The Brussels were amazing and the best thing we had. The other food was ok. But, between being bumped, splashed, coughed on by waitstaff and the mediocre drinks, I was done. Then...thanks to the coughing...got Covid from this place. I think I'll skip next time. read more

I don't know I have never review this restaurant before because I've eaten here a number of times and never had a bad bite. Went for a Friday night dinner and couple of drinks. We had Caesar salads, my husband had the swordfish and I had the capellini with mushrooms. Everything was literally perfect. Pace of service, drinks pretty and well balanced(Primo Sour and Blood Orange Cosmo), the salads-- so simple, right level of dressing, fresh, and of course the entrees were delicious, perfect portions and pretty on the plate. The cappellini with mushrooms was unbelievably good. The mushrooms were so chewy and woody kind of meaty without meat, flavors were mixed--tart, garlicky, buttery...mmmm. The swordfish dish was beautiful, deliciously grilled piece of fish and served with broccolini and a few roasted vegetables/aïoli. Our server was super nice, and the whole thing had service fee included so it was just easy breezy. The place is always busy so I definitely would recommend a reservation. If you're looking for a nice dinner out in Tacoma, this is definitely in my top five suggestions, you will not be disappointed. read more

How can you define consistent culinary excellence, repeated over many years? Two words, actually. Primo Grill.

This was my first time visiting Primo Grill at its current location. My previous experience at the original location was underwhelming: a chunk of overcooked salmon on a bed of bland lettuce. Whilst Primo Grill is still a far cry from fine dining, the menu offers some culinary creativity that does not disappoint. A starter of beets with goat cheese was a simple but very tasty delight: cold baby beets with goat cheese and a zesty beet and champagne vinegar reduction. To follow was tagliatelle with an elegant pork ragu. This was some of the tastiest pasta I have ever had. I don't know if they make it in house, but it tasted as if it might have been. I am British, and we Brits are passionate about sticky toffee pudding. This is a divine dish, but one that can become over sweet, heavy and downright cloying on the palate. Primo's proved to be almost fluffy in texture and not oversweet--well done Primo. The ambiance and decor are inviting and the general feeling is welcoming. First time eating at this place. Parking is a pain, especially on a weekend evening. We ordered mussels, calamari, beets, and brussel sprouts for our starters. The mussels tasted fresh, the beet salad with feta was pretty solid. The brussel sprouts were OK. They were cooked with bacon and the main issue is that you didn't get enough of the bacon taste into the brussel sprouts but that may be just the inherent issue with brussel sprouts. The calamari was OK. For mains: we had a pizza, taglietelle with pork ragu, Niman Ranch prime New York steak, muscovy duck, and a penne with vodka sauce. The taglietelle was excellent. The duck was OK, slightly overcooked. I've had duck before where the meat isn't blood-red and it's still very tender. This wasn't it. It was slightly chewy. Same with the steak, pretty good but just on the other side of slightly overcooked with the steak not quite as tender as it could be. For dessert, we had the panna cotta, the apple hand pie, the hazelnut brownie with ice cream, bourbon chocolate cake, and a olive oil cake. The desserts were very good although I have to admit a little disappointment in the hand pie. I think I was expecting something similar to a Hostess fruit pie. Not like I was expecting a bunch of artificial chemicals and preservatives with no natural ingredients and no real fruit like the Hostess pies, but that I was disappointed that there was no sweetness at all in the pie. Not in the apples used in the filling nor in the crust. It was just sort kind sour and the "crust" outer layer mushy and bland. Overall, a pretty decent meal. I really wanted to love this place, but it just fell a bit short. I got a short rib dish that I felt I could produce at home without much effort. My husband's pasta was...terrible. The sauce was incredibly watery and lacked flavor. However, the appetizer of calamari was delicious and the sauce that it was cooked in was delicious.
