My discovery of Princes' Pastry Delight was one of Oak Park's saving graces when I moved from the uber diverse Chicago to a much more bland suburb (yikes, a suburb) of Detroit. I was completely and utterly unfamiliar with Chaldean food & Chaldean bakeries before moving here, but I have become quite a fan! I've especially fallen in love with the pastries at Princes'! You'll find lots of phyllo dough and pistachios in Princes' sweets, but there is one pastry that looks and tastes much like one that I buy at the Indian sweet shops on Devon in Chicago. The Indian version is made from chick peas; I have been told. Yet, the sweet maker at Princes' says that his version is made from flour. What kind of flour? I have no idea! The crispy yet syrupy sweet is, nevertheless, delectable! The last time I was in, the sweet maker was especially polite and helpful as he introduced my friend from out of town to the flavors of the Chaldean culture. He kept offering her samples of this and that, and he told her stories about the photographs on the wall of the shop. It was a special and memorable experience. I stopped by here last Thursday for the first time, and long story short, will be going back again and again, for sure. Not only is their selection very extensive, but everything we tried (and we did try A LOT) was excellent! We didn't know what most of it was, but that's pretty inconsequential. You can't go wrong with any number of combinations involving honey and/or pistachios. The lady behind the counter was also very pleasant and welcoming, and utterly understanding after finding out it was our first time there. Their hours are pretty forgiving too - open until 10 PM most days of the week. The only drawback is that their minimum for credit/debit purchases is $15, and if you bought enough to get to that price point, you'd be eating Middle Eastern pastries for the next couple of weeks - not that it's a bad thing. read more

Yeah the pastries here are pretty perfect. Not too sweet and not too greasy. It's super affordable as well. I got a nice little tray with a few types of baklava type desserts and some cookies for $6.50. Nothing is really labeled but the service is good and they'll tell you about everything in the case. I have a feeling that they make savory stuff here too because the guy ahead of me got something that looked to be specially made for him while he waited. I'll have to investigate that a little more next time. read more

This was my aunt's go to place for Baklava. It is fantastic. Hard to find little store in a mini-strip mall. Had to call my cousins several times after my aunt passed trying to get the name and address. Now I wouldn't go anywhere else. It's a hike for me, but well worth it. read more

I just had a little piece of heaven enter my mouth and go down, oh so fabulously with my coffee... A little after lunch treat for me on this Friday (PAYDAY!!) - I'm happy I stopped. I hadn't even seen previous reviews! I'm not sure what that tasty morsel was, but it tasted similar to a baklavah, but it had some kind of cheese in the middle. Very light flavors, nothing too sweet, or oily, it was just perfect. I also got some kind of pastry roll...it has coconut on it, and has walnuts on the inside, it too is very tasty. I was looking at the cakes, and the guys said NO! They're no good, I'm not going to give you any.. Thanks! :) The service wasn't the friendliest, but he wasn't rude or anything. Like another reviewer said, nothing is labeled, but that's what I kind of like about this type of place. I want to eat what the natives eat....and not be persuaded by a name I already know. Selection is decent but I don't like everything sitting out on countertops and not in displays where they can't get stale !!! Which brings me to my next compliant, everything I ordered was stale. All tasted like it was at least 2 weeks old. Lady wasn't helpful just stood there didn't greet me and didn't ask if I needed help. Will never go here again. I love this place! Nothing's labeled, so be prepared to do a lot of "uh, i'll take one of those? and two of those? and just a whole pile of those over there" but don't worry--it will all be delicious. On my last trip there he insisted my boyfriend and I try a whole bunch of interesting stuff, but he also insisted I not buy one of the things I wanted to try because it was "too sweet for me" which I'll assume was not commentary on my character! Really good, and inexpensive to boot. Did I mention really good? Like, OMG, eyes rolling back in my head yummy. I didn't know there were as many different ways to combine phyllo pastry, crushed and/or whole nuts, and honey as they have on display and all of them -- okay, the ones I tried so far -- are oh my stars delicious. i bought an assortment of their cookies n bakhlava..also bought chocolate pastried for my kids..i luved their bakhlavas..each n every1 of them r unique n yum,yum,yummy...i swear,i ate arnd 7 pieces of bakhlava in 1 sitting :P the chocolate pastried were moist n tasty..the cookies r tasty 2..i'm definitely going bak for more of those yummy bakhlavaz..they r 1000 tyms better than shatila 4 sure.. read more
