Our first lunch at Villa Fontana was nothing short of serendipitous--my dad was reunited with a former co-worker he hadn't seen in decades! The meal was so delicious that he kept saying "oishi" (Japanese for "delicious"). It truly felt like a home-cooked meal, starting with a cream of potato soup, followed by a bountiful salad with hardboiled eggs, olives, and more. The main course featured chicken parmesan, spaghetti, perfectly prepared vegetables, and a berry pie à la mode for dessert. My dad's room is bright and cheerful, overlooking a gorgeous courtyard. It was recently remodeled with new carpet and granite countertops, making it feel fresh and inviting. To help ease his transition, Merife arranged 24/7 caregiving services from Harmony for the first three days--an unexpected but deeply appreciated gesture. Each caregiver was kind, attentive, and communicative with me, which made all the difference. Just 3 days after moving in, my dad had a small accident during the night, falling on the bathroom floor. Thankfully, he wasn't harmed, and the staff immediately provided me with pictures to reassure me that he was okay. Their attentiveness and quick response gave me so much peace of mind. Perhaps the biggest change has been in my dad's daily routine. Before moving in, he spent his days watching TV from morning until night. Now, he participates in group morning exercises, and when I asked what he liked the most about Villa Fontana, he replied, Bingo! He also loves that he can enjoy ice cream every day--a small but meaningful joy. The entire staff at Villa Fontana has been incredibly friendly and kind. In addition to Merife and Michelle, I want to give a special shoutout to Jefferson, who always greets me at the front desk with a smile, as well as Allyssa, Maryann (the activity director), Maryann (the med tech), Manny, Marycris, and Roselily. We also got to sit down with some of the original resident ambassadors, who shared their honest and positive experiences. My mom--who had been completely against leaving her home--was suddenly asking me when she could move in. Kellie introduced us to the nursing staff, who were friendly, grounded, and communicated in a way we both understood. Then came the surprises: daily happy hours with live piano music, a surround-sound movie theatre, and even a putting green (which I personally loved). Allyson (Memory Program Director) and Gilda (Director of Resident Care Services) are absolutely incredible. From day one, they made a genuine effort to learn everything about our mom's history and specific needs to help her settle in. The transformation has been unbelievable. Our mom was not willing to leave her room at another facility, but now she has genuine friends, eats in the dining room for all meals, and stays active. She loves her trips to the on-site salon, watching TV with her new friends, and going on outings like scenic drives and picnics in the Rose Garden. The nurses and PAL caregivers (Personal Assistants for Living) clearly have specialized training and truly know how to work with people with dementia. Every time I visit, the PALS always update me with heartwarming stories of what my mom has been doing. Atria is a gorgeous place with huge trees, gardens, koi pond, and creek. The person who gave us the tour was the memory care director. She was very warm and knowledgeable and genuinely interested in getting to know my mom and her current living/health situation. The dining room is clean and spacious and there was a friendly warmth from the staff and residents. I was pleased to find out in addition to three meals a day, they serve coffee and breakfast all day until 5pm. When a resident is sick or just doesn't feel like going to the dining room, they can have food delivered to their apartment. There is also the option of cooking in the small kitchen in their apartment. Atria has lots of activities and events for residents. They go to interesting places like San Francisco, Monterey, etc. There are groups to join, too, like a knitting or writing group. Garden plots are available in the community garden and there is a heated outdoor swimming pool. My mom loved the apartment she was shown. Since this was the first community she looked at, we are going to tour a few more before making a decision. It's hard to imagine a nicer place.

UPDATE ON MY DAD My…read moredad is STILL in the hospital after being discharged from The Terraces because they determined he was "sufficiently better." The reality? He couldn't even walk. We were told that Medicare requires a patient to be able to walk 21 steps before being discharged from rehab. Yet my dad was sent home when he was not even capable of walking safely. Now he is in the hospital at El Camino Hospital, one of the best hospitals in the area, and we have learned that he has E. coli--an infection he has dealt with before and that we had specifically asked The Terraces to test him for two weeks ago. I cannot understand how this happened. We trusted a skilled nursing and rehabilitation facility to care for an elderly man who was vulnerable and unable to advocate for himself. Instead, I feel that his condition was seriously underestimated, and I am extremely concerned that he was discharged before it was safe for him to leave. I am filing a formal complaint with Medicare and the appropriate regulatory agencies and will be requesting his complete medical and therapy records. This is not just about my dad. This is about how we treat our elderly and most vulnerable people. Families should not have to fight this hard to make sure their loved ones are safe, properly evaluated, and receiving the care they deserve. What has happened is absolutely heartbreaking and, in my opinion, completely unacceptable.
