We found it hard to communicate with the staff, phone wasnt answered, emails didnt get a response. Showed up in person and was promised a call, but never got it. On the second visit we finally found the notary, but he was very unhelpful. Couldnt answer the most basic general questions about notarizing a document. I once had a mailbox here, but the people that work here were stealing my mail I was even getting most of my mail five and six months late. I'm glad I got away from this nasty filthy junkie place. The place is very junky on the inside they seem to have packages scattered everywhere there's barely room to walk into the place that looks like a" little hole in the wall "with barely any light to see. My package's always had bug spots and blood stains on them when I would pick them up from this place which seems to be very dirty and dusty on the inside. I see one of the workers a "Asian male with big gray hair "seems to be a big marijuana weed smoker. He always looks like he was high and he could never find your packages, cause the place was always so junky . No wonder why this place always smells like marijuana and dust. He always Hangs out in front of the place smoking weed, with other guys like he's some big gangsta when in reality he looks like a nerd. Even when you walk by the place you're either smelling marijuana or something that stinks very rotten. Well I'm glad I got my mail away from this dusty place, (little hole in the wall. Just straight up not open at 9:15am on a Thursday. Lights on, no one inside, people waiting since 8:30am. No signs or anything....

It's not uncommon for the owner (or they/their staff) to withhold my mail or packages until later in the day. I usually try and drop in over my lunch hour every day, but I am always told to come back after 2:30 pm pst. All the while I see the staff outside taking smoke breaks. I have opened a complaint with the Better Business Bureau and the City of Oakland Public Ethics Commission so this does not happen to other consumers and small business owners. I come here weekly and you could not find better customer service from a small business. They offer the best solution for your budget and are incredibly honest. Also, the packing is very high quality and I have had them ship multiple computers for me and the care if making sure they are ok are A+. Great service, good folks, straightforward. Many times I've found myself skipping right over the post office (literally next door) and going straight to Private Mailbox and General Store for shipping (both FedEx AND UPS!), envelopes, shipping prep (like packaging boxes, frames, etc.) and even stamps (there's an added cost to those, but with that ridiculous line at the post office, if I need 10 stamps and I have to pay 20 cents extra, I'm not going to cry about it. They also have a fun selection of birthday cards and local Oakland and Lake Merritt greeting cards which are great to send off with packages. A little Oakland flavor -- love that. They also do notary services, have priviate mailboxes (like a PO box, but there's always someone there to sign for packages), sell lottery tickets, batteries (which has saved my butt on more than one occasion) and even have a copy machine. At first, I was told there was nothing I could do to return and ship my item, but I was lucky that the man working there caught me at the door and asked questions and offered solutions on how I could ship my item. If you find yourself in the Lakeshore district of Oakland and needing to get a package out quickly, this is the way to go. Next door sits the US Post Office but it hasn't been updated sicne the 70s and the line usually spills out the door and nearly halfway around the lake. Ok, that's an exageration but only slightly. The Private Mailbox guy was friendly enough and let me run out to check on my car that was illegally parked while he readied my shipment. Try that at the PO. read more

I love this place. When I first moved into the area, I rented a mailbox for privacy purposes. Have to avoid nosy roommates snooping through my mail! Every day when I came in, the staff remembered me by name, were extremely helpful and I never had an issue with my mailbox, UPS/FED EX services, mail, etc. The reason for this review? I have not had a box in this place for well over a year. When I went in today to drop off a return via UPS, I was again acknowledged with the same friendly greeting from a neighborhood place. When I got home, I realized I forgot to write two numbers on my package. I called and asked if UPS had picked up yet. The person on the phone said they had not. I was grateful to have the chance to fix my mistake. He found my box, pulled it, and took the information right over the phone and fixed my problem without me having to go up there and do it myself. Excellent service, friendly staff, all around great place in the neighborhood. read more

My Box: I have had a box here for just about 2 years, and I love it! Laura is the best, and always has a treat for my dog Bindi. Lee and the other guys in the outgoing area (sorry I don't know everyone's name) are also friendly, give great honest service, and are extremely helpful. I am always calling to see if a package is in. They receive packages unlike the USPS, and in my estimation are affordable, especially considering UPS doesn't even attempt to deliver my packages at my home, and always just puts the slip on my door. I live around 20 minutes from the pickup location, so Private Mailbox was the only practical solution. I actually save money, considering the extensive shopping i do online. A shipping story: I did some research and found that my package was 1 inch above a cutoff point, and subsequently cost an extra 80 dollars to ship. Lee put in the measurements just under the cutoff and saved me an incredible amount of money. Real people, real service. read more

This is one of those places where you go in and when you ask if you could mail a box out, the cashier says "no" and then pauses and laughs and says she was being sarcastic. I can't stand this kind of patronizing, insulting and rude humor. She said some other sarcastic thing meaning to be funny, but it came off as an unnecessary comment considering the context: I was a polite and modestly dressed citizen simply mailing a box out, trying to get by in trump's america. Prices are WILDLY overpriced here. It sadly SMELLS HORRIBLE and musty in there, too; maybe they can get an air filter or something. Leo hooked me up by cutting a custom sized box, gave me some mail labels for free and sealed the whole thing w packing tape. A custom job. Very effcient. I've been here twice and both times received superior service. The first time they didn't have the right size box for my package so the dude just made me one out of a bigger one, free of charge. There's never a line, they provide you with a sharpie for addressing your package if you forget yours, and it's cheaper for big packages than the post office next door (which always has long lines, rude customer service, and poor air circulation). They also sell stamps---at a higher price than the post office---but sometimes the extra 8 cents is worth being treated like a human and not waiting in line for 20 minutes. This place rules and I will definitely be returning for all my postal needs. read more

I had to return some rental textbooks. I've done this at least four times before, but I've always dropped off at the UPS store on Piedmont. I did the same thing as I always do: packed up the books, printed the label, and taped the label to the outside of the box. I dropped them off on Wednesday, December 19th. They SHIPPED one of the boxes on December 28th, and as of today (the 29th) the other one is still not out for shipment. What the hell? I've now been charged an overdue cost for the lateness of the books. All of the other times when I dropped boxes off at the UPS store on Piedmont, the packages went out within 24 hours (which is what matters in terms of the due dates, not when the company actually receives them). I will go back to using the Piedmont store from now on. Two stars only because the guy behind the counter was smiling and friendly. read more

I stopped by to mail a small box after the USPS closed next door. The workers were nice, but lacked some common sense.. After weighing the box, I asked what would be the cheapest way to mail it. He said, "well it's pretty light, what's in here? Maybe it can fit in a padded envelope." I didn't feel comfortable revealing the true contents (expensive & fragile electronics that I thought might get crushed in an envelope). But before I could even respond, he starts vigorously shaking my box! DUDE WHY ARE YOU SHAKING MY BOX!?! This isn't your christmas present.
