My 2009 Subaru Outback Wagon 3.0R suddenly started taking a long time to shift into gear. All of the warning lights came on, the car went into limp mode, and it threw a P0758 solenoid code. I wanted someone to actually investigate the cause before I made the decision to spend thousands of dollars repairing a 165,000-mile car. The first transmission shop quoted me $5,000-$7,000 to replace the transmission without checking anything. The second transmission shop wouldn't even look at it because of the car's age and mileage. I then brought it to a Subaru dealership, figuring they would be able to give me the answers I needed to decide whether to repair the car or move on. They told me it needed a valve body (approximately $3,500), but warned that I might also need a TCM and possibly a transmission, bringing the potential cost to $13,000! As a last-ditch effort, I brought the car to Pro-Built Transmissions in Holbrook, and I'm so glad I did. The very next day, Dan texted me to explain that they had taken the pan down and checked the transmission oil, wiring, and electrical system. They determined that the TCM was bad and were able to install a replacement within a couple of days. The entire repair cost me less than half of what the other places were quoting me. What impressed me most was that they actually diagnosed the problem instead of immediately telling me I needed a new transmission. Dan, Dave, and the mechanics were professional, thorough, responsive, and honest throughout the process. After dealing with three other places, Pro-Built was exactly what I had been looking for: a shop willing to investigate the problem and find the actual cause before recommending an expensive repair. I can't recommend Dan, Dave, and the entire Pro-Built team highly enough. If you have a transmission problem, especially with an older or higher-mileage vehicle, I would absolutely give them a call before agreeing to replace the transmission. He was very patient as we weighed our options, and replaced it for us when I was able to find a low milage tranny from a local used parts dealer. Running strong after 6 months. Had my CTS Cadillac towed to the shop on April 27th unfortunately It took three days for them diagnose the issue which ended up being a stripped drive shaft. I was informed it would take a week to fix however it was more like 9 days they are not open weekends. They specialize in transmissions and you will pay a premium $100 per hour rate for their services. Keep in mind this is not a large shop with many employees so don't expect 3-5 day service. read more

Take Your Business Elsewhere! These guys are scam artists! Look at the other reviews and even the reviews that are "not recommended" by Yelp, they are all true! I took my car here after some warning lights came on indicating transmission issues. It took them 3 days to diagnose the problem and another 5 days to "fix" it. (By the way, it took this long because the owner's new Camero needed more attention than his customer's cars.) I was charged $2600 for a used but "refurbished" transmission and labor. Immediately upon pulling out of their parking lot, all warning lights came back on plus several others including my check engine light. A catastrophic failure. The car would not cycle through the first two gears without hesitating and then violently shifting into gear. It was worse than when I brought it in. I took it back, but despite the lifetime warranty they have on the transmission, Dave (the owner) said it wasn't a transmission problem and I should take it elsewhere, because he wasn't responsible. Not responsible?! It won't shift! Fed up I took it to my dealership. Not only was the transmission they installed cracked and leaking, it wasn't the correct transmission for my type of car, had obvious extensive wear "as if it had been dragged across the floor" and was filled, not with transmission fluid, but engine oil. Engine oil in my transmission! On top of that, the dealership questioned whether my previous transmission was really beyond repair based upon the diagnostic codes that appeared when they ran the codes. These guys installed a non-functioning transmission, charged me for it, and then won't take it back or correct the issue. Dave and his team are either incompetent or scamming people. They supposedly rebuilt a transmission for a 2003 VW Eurovan that was being sold by Mass Car Mart. I bought the van and Mass Car Mart said it carried a 6 month warranty but any work needed to be done in house. I live in CA and had the van shipped here. The transmission died less than 100 miles after I bought it requiring a complete rebuild. The shop that did the work here told me the parts ProBuilt said they had replaced in the work order were original had not been replaced. The owner of ProBuilt denied any liability and said what happened was not possible. He refused to send a copy of the warranty paperwork to me. Yes, "et the buyer beware" applies here but any shop unwilling to stand behind their work does not deserve your business. read more

Place is excellent. Small locally owned shop, that gets a ton of business. That should tell you their reputation alone. Went in expecting a repair well north of $1K for a differential issue. Ended up being a $120 part. And Dave in the office didn't try to upsell anything or do anything shady. Was very honest about it. I'd go back in a heartbeat for whatever my needs are there. read more

Do not go here, the owner is a con-artist. He said he could do an engine swap and then after three weeks he said that the engine he bought was junk and that I need to pay for the engine repairs as well as the engine, which would cost double the original estimate. read more

These guys are the best around. I have a 03 VW Jetta Wolfburgs 1.8T Edition and its hard to find people to work on them because of how difficult they are. Not only did these guys fix my transmission a couple of months ago without having to do a full rebuild, they are also fixing major engine issues a VW specialist shop couldn't correctly diagnose. They dedicated a whole day to my car to diagnose the wiring and ECU issues on my car and are working hard to fix them.
